Russia invades Ukraine

It’s rightly being pointed out in India that Visa,Mastercard pullout in Russia should had made the world wary of them.

Glad India made alternatives to Visa,Mastercard, Gpay,Apple pay.
Apple Pay has been suspended in Russia.

And stop thinking that what’s happening to Russia will happen to india. We have no intentions even under the current hegemonic modi government to invade and occupy a democratic neighboring state.

Major general of Russian army 'liquidated', says Ukraine

A senior Russian army commander has been killed in fighting near Kharkiv, according to Ukraine's ministry of defence.

It says in a statement that Major General Vitaly Gerasimov died alongside a number of other army officers, with others wounded.

He is said to have taken part in previous Russian operations in Chechnya and Syria.

Russia has not commented on the claims.

It comes after Western officials said on Friday that three Russian commanders had so far been killed; including another major general, Andrei Sukhovetsky, apparently shot by a sniper.

Ukraine also claimed on Monday that more than 11,000 Russian personnel had so far died in the war - with 110 aircraft destroyed.

11k dead is too far fetched for even science fiction

Russia has said it may close its main gas pipeline to Germany if the West goes ahead with a ban on Russian oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said a "rejection of Russian oil would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market", causing prices to more than double to $300 a barrel.

$300 a barrel? Ouch!

A US delegation met with Venezuelan government officials in Caracus at the weekend for talks that included a discussion of energy supplies, the White House said Monday as Washington looks for ways to reduce its imports of Russian oil.

Well well, USA have no problem negotiating with 'Communists' and to think Russian oil exports to USA are miniscule.

Russia warns on oil import ban as little progress is made at Ukraine talks

Fears of an energy war between Russia and the West grew on Tuesday after the United States pushed its allies to ban Russian oil imports as punishment for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, where talks on humanitarian corridors made little progress.

Russia warned it could stop the flow of gas through pipelines from Russia to Germany in response to Berlin's decision last month to halt the opening of the controversial new Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Russia supplies 40 per cent of Europe's gas.

"We have every right to take a matching decision and impose an embargo on gas pumping through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline," Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Monday.

Novak also warned that oil prices could more than double to $300 a barrel if the United States and its allies banned imports of Russian oil, a crucial source of revenue after the country was effectively frozen out of Western financial markets.

Analysts at Bank of America however said that if most of Russia's oil exports were cut off there could be a shortfall of five million barrels per day (bpd) or more, pushing prices as high as $200.

Oil prices see-sawed near 14-year highs on Tuesday, with Brent crude futures up $1.06, or 0.9pc, at $124.27 a barrel at 0223 GMT, after trading as high as $125.19.

US President Joe Biden held a video conference call with the leaders of France, Germany and Britain on Monday as he pushed for their support to ban Russian oil imports.

But if need be, the United States was willing to move ahead without allies in Europe, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Many countries on the continent are heavily reliant on Russian energy.

Russia's invasion, the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two, has created 1.7 million refugees, a raft of sanctions on Moscow, and fears of wider conflict as the West pours military aid into Ukraine.

Ukraine claims Russian general killed near Kharkiv
Ukraine's military intelligence said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces killed a Russian general near the besieged city of Kharkiv, the second Russian senior commander to die in the invasion.

Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, first deputy commander of Russia's 41st army, was killed on Monday, the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine's defence ministry said in a statement.

Russia's defence ministry could not be immediately reached for comment and Reuters could not verify the report.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special operation" that it says is not designed to occupy territory but to destroy its southern neighbour's military capabilities and capture what it regards as dangerous nationalists.

Japan tightened its sanctions on Tuesday, freezing the assets of an additional 32 Russian and Belarusian officials and executives of companies with close ties to the government.

Estee Lauder Companies Inc joined a long list of firms exiting Russia, suspending all commercial activities and closing all its stores in the country.

Humanitarian corridors
Sieges and the bombing continued as Kyiv rejected possible humanitarian corridors to Russia and Belarus, but said some limited progress had been made on agreeing to logistics for the evacuation of civilians.

In the city of Irpin, on the northwest edge of Kyiv, fleeing residents ran with their young children in strollers, or cradling babies in arms, while others carried pet carriers, and plastic bags and suitcases.

"It's like a disaster, the city is almost ruined, and the district where I'm living, it's like there are no houses which were not bombed," said one young mother, holding a baby beneath a blanket, while her daughter stood by her side.

"Yesterday was the hardest bombing, and the lights and sound are so scary, and the whole building is shaking."

Besides corridors to Russia, Moscow has proposed giving the residents of the Ukrainian cities of Sumy and Mariupol the choice of moving elsewhere in Ukraine on Tuesday, setting a deadline in the early hours for Kyiv to agree, Russian news agencies reported.

Russia's defence ministry said it would open the “humanitarian corridors” from 0700 GMT on Tuesday, subject to Ukraine's approval, listing routes from the capital Kyiv as well as the cities of Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy.

Ukraine did not initially respond to the offer.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of reneging on previous escape route agreements and trying to stop people such as by planting explosives on roads.

“There was an agreement on humanitarian corridors. Did that work? Russian tanks worked in its place, Russian Grads (multiple rocket launchers), Russian mines,” Zelensky said in a video posted on Telegram.

Accusing Moscow of “cynicism”, Zelensky also said Russian troops destroyed buses that were due to evacuate civilians from the combat zones.

“They ensure that a small corridor to the occupied territory is open for a few dozen people. Not so much towards Russia as towards the propagandists, directly towards the television cameras,” he said.

More than 1.7m Ukrainians have fled to Central Europe since the conflict began on February 24, the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday.

After the third attempt to ease the bloodshed at talks in Belarus, a Ukrainian negotiator said that although small progress on agreeing to logistics for the evacuation of civilians had been made, things remained largely unchanged.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters that Moscow would halt operations if Ukraine ceased fighting, amended its constitution to declare neutrality, and recognised Russia's annexation of Crimea and the independence of regions held by Russian-backed separatists.

A Russian strike on a bread factory killed 13 in the town of Makariv in the Kyiv region, Ukrainian officials said. Reuters could not verify the details. Russia denies targeting civilians.

In the encircled southern port city of Mariupol, hundreds of thousands of people remained trapped without food and water under regular bombardments.

In the eastern city of Kharkiv, police said the death toll from the Russian bombardment was 143 since the start of the invasion. It was not possible to verify the toll.

Ukraine said on Monday its forces had retaken control of the town of Chuhuiv in the northeast after heavy fighting and of the strategic Mykolayiv airport in the south. Neither could immediately be verified.

A senior US defence official said Putin had now deployed into Ukraine nearly 100pc of the more than 150,000 forces that he had pre-staged outside the country before the invasion.

One unexpected outcome of the turmoil in the energy market has been the significant price competitiveness edge that has been handed to electric vehicles, personal and public, mass transit, and distributed energy generations such as rooftop solar. While those advantages can only be exploited by single family home owners and those with the means, the less fortunate are likely to be hit with high gas prices.

Hopefully the fluctuations subside but I also hope the governments take notice and invest more in public transport.

Ukraine is trying to become a puppet of the vest and USA.

They should have tried to become a close ally of Russia. Huge cultural heritage and neighbor. Instead this unnecessary war has killed thousands and displayed millions.

Security and defence analyst Michael Clarke, former director general of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), told Sky News: "The main thing as far as NATO is concerned is to get some aircraft into Ukraine that they can use. "NATO has been giving arms openly to Ukraine - this is just another type of weapon."

He said that with Poland handing the jets to the US, it is like Poland saying to Russia "if you want an argument about this, have it with Washington, don't have it with us".

And he added: "The main thing is for Ukrainian pilots to find a safe way to take the aircraft into Ukraine."

Poland has agreed to hand over all of its MIG-29 fighter jets to a US airbase "immediately and free of charge" as part of a plan to provide aircraft to the Ukrainians.

In a statement, Poland's foreign ministry said: "The authorities of the Republic of Poland, after consultations between the president and the government, are ready to deploy - immediately and free of charge - all their MIG-29 jets to the Rammstein Air Base and place them at the disposal of the government of the United States of America.

"At the same time, Poland requests the United States to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities. Poland is ready to immediately establish the conditions of purchase of the planes.

"The Polish government also requests other NATO Allies - owners of MIG-29 jets - to act in the same vein."

(Reuters) - Palladium shot up to an all-time high as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and resultant sanctions stoked fear of scarcity, while gold tested the psychological $2,000 mark in response to demand for safe-haven assets.

Spot palladium soared 11.8% to $3,357.68 per ounce, by 1058 GMT, on course for its biggest daily percentage rise since March 2020, after hitting an all-time high of $3,440.76 earlier.

I dont think is it FOC. It is expecting US to replace these with F16s. Good deal IMO.

What has happened in the last 24 hours?

Today is the 14th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an unprecedented address to British MPs, saying: "We will not give up, we will not lose."

If you're just joining us now, here's the latest:

Russia says it will stop firing in five Ukrainian cities at 7am GMT to facilitate humanitarian corridors. These will be in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol;
At least 5,000 people managed to flee the northeastern city of Sumy on Tuesday, including 1,700 foreign students;
However, Ukraine says evacuation efforts failed in the southern port city of Mariupol because Russian shelling continued. Moscow denies this is the case;
President Zelenskyy delivered a powerful speech in the House of Commons, and repeated his desperate appeal for a no-fly zone over Ukraine;
Later, his wife Olena Zelenska shared an emotive letter about the situation in Ukraine. She said: "There are several dozen children who have never known peace in their lives";
Poland's military offered its jets to the US Air Force is "not-teneable" according to the Pentagon, amid worries over a no-fly zone
The UK announced it will phase out Russian oil imports by the end of 2022;
US President Joe Biden confirmed a similar move, saying a complete ban on Russian oil and gas imports will deal a "powerful blow" to Moscow;
McDonald's closes 850 restaurants in Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, while Starbucks and the Coca-Cola Company halt operations.

Russia and US could return to Cold War 'peaceful co-existence', says Russia
The Russian foreign ministry has said it is open to honest and mutually respectful dialogue with the US, according to Russian news agency Interfax.

In a message to America, it said the two countries should return to the principle of "peaceful co-existence" like during the Cold War.

It also said hope remained that normal relations between the two countries could be restored.

The US has imposed some of the harshest sanctions on Russia following the war in Ukraine.

So.... Who will be forfeited earlier in the process? Russia or west? Who can sustain the loses more?

West is trying to bring in Venezuela and Iran back into the oil market to soften the blow to oil. But neither can pump out 10mn barrels a day. So oil will stay high.

Who will replace nickle and palladium production? No idea. Prices of electronics will go up.

Everything depends on whether countries in Asia, Africa, south america follow these sanctions.

China has set up a yuan mechanism with Russia. India is setting up a rupee one. Expect a Dinar/Dirham mechanism. This will be an alternative to Euro and USD. Its success will depend on how these countries accept these currencies.

They didn’t invade Russia though.. It’s like dictating to Afghanistan what they can or cannot do by Pakistan due to cultural similarities.

You know what NATO is, right? Its an anti Russian collusion. Why would Russia tolerate its neighbor joining a hostile block.

What is important to note is the BRICS are moving away from the dollar. This means that there will be a knock on effect as countries that trade with BRICS will also probably start moving away or keeping other currencies. I think we are seeing the beginning of the end of American dominance in the financial sphere. Doesn't mean the end of them as a big power just that the monopoly will be broken..

Ukraine didn’t have a dictator , people were voting for these people(corrupt yeah), but people were actually making these decisions, protests etc all happen, so not sure why Russia thinks they can override that?

Can people be without Western nation tech?

What has happened so far today?

Today marks the 14th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Another 12-hour ceasefire was agreed by Moscow late last night, to allow civilians to flee some of the worst hit regions in Ukraine: Sumy, Mariupol, Kyiv, Enerhodar and Kharkiv.

Agreed ceasefires have "largely failed" in the worst-affected parts of Ukraine. Officials say civilians were able to flee Sumy, Enerhodar and parts of the Kyiv region through humanitarian corridors. Evacuations from Kharkiv and Mariupol were impossible;

In the southern port city of Mariupol, a children's hospital and maternity ward were destroyed in a Russian air strike. President Zelenskyy says children are still trapped under the rubble;

The death toll in the besieged city is estimated at 1,200, while the situation there has been described as "apocalyptic";

Russia has acknowledged for the first time using conscripts in its invasion of Ukraine;

Ukraine says it does not know the radiation levels at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control. The plant has been disconnected from the country's power grid;

The UN says almost 2.2 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February;
Fewer than 1,000 family visas have been granted in UK so far - as refugees in Poland told they'll have to wait two weeks for UK visa appointment.

This means that there will be a knock on effect as countries that trade with BRICS will also probably start moving away or keeping other currencies. Dream on pal. America is so far ahead of the rest of the world in tech that it would take others decades to catch up to United States. Future is for nations that innovate. America is the land of innovation.

Western officials have warned of their "serious concern" that Vladimir Putin could order chemical weapons to be used on Ukraine's capital.

In an assessment, they say an "utterly horrific" attack on Kyiv could be unleashed as Russian forces attempt to overcome the logistical issues that have apparently plagued the convoy heading for the city.

In a briefing to journalists, one official said: "I think we've got good reason to be concerned about possible use of non-conventional weapons, partly because of what we've seen has happened in other theatres.

"As I've mentioned before, for example, what we've seen in Syria, partly because we've seen a bit of setting the scene for that in the false flag claims that are coming out, and other indications as well.

"So it's a serious concern for us."

The officials also said there is hope that China will push for an end to the violence but that there is disappointment that Beijing has so far not been clearer on the "unwarranted invasion" being unacceptable.

Key developments:

• No-fly zone is needed to avert humanitarian catastrophe, says Ukraine's leader
• UK will not escalate the conflict 'in a way that would be unacceptable' to the world, transport minister says
• Chernobyl radiation fears as minister calls for Russia to allow for urgent repairs
• First Lady Olena Zelenska writes open letter condemning Putin and 'mass murder of civilians'

It comes after Downing Street said the Prime Minister, who met with his Polish counterpart in London Mateusz Morawiecki yesterday, believed it "wouldn't be tenable for Nato pilots and Nato-badged jets to be shooting down Russian aircraft".

Allies fear that such a move would risk provoking a wider conflict, and the Western official said the difference between the weapons is that the existing support is "defensive".

A second official warned of more repression of the people in Russia to come as the Russian president faces an extended campaign that he did not prepare his citizens or troops for.

They said: "This will end because of a combination of factors, one of them is the impact of sanctions, but it's only one of them.

"I think unfortunately the state's response will not be to think about the best interests of ordinary Russians the state's response will be to double down, to control information, to blame other people and try and see what they can do by the partnership they can do with China and a few other countries to offset the worst of it."

In long term F16s will be better for Poland. It is a big win for them.

It will be totally lols if Ukraine gets Polish Migs and Russia captures them in transport 😂

You know what NATO is, right? Its an anti Russian collusion. Why would Russia tolerate its neighbor joining a hostile block.

They have tolerated both Estonia and Latvia with nato bases right on its border and one just about 50 km away from st. petersburg, many circled around russia with turkey and lithuania too, dont buy into putin ** about nato bases, this is about russia gaining territory, putins wet dream of recreating soviet union that broke down infront of his eyes as a kgb officer.

IF you have been alive for long enough you would have heard this rhetoric many times over the last 50 years

Before it was the soviets that were going to end the american empire, then india and china, now this guy brings in the brics.

US is actually so far ahead then the rest, every new technology, every new innovation is still coming out of america.

ITs not just the petro dollar that keeps america alive, because when oil finishes, what are people going to trade on? its going to be an digital landscape a digital planet, everything will be controled by an american company, facebook, google, apple, microsoft, now one comes close, even europe is light years behind.

Serious question, can you please elaborate?

IMHO Innovation and Tech , While it will not take decades but US has many tech cities that are obsessed with innovation and have the capital and world talent(immigration) for the same that it’s remarkable.

Also the entrepreneurs here think big and work with big picture in mind(personal lives are not really a priority) where they are able to tap the potential of Eastern Europeans, East Asians, South Asians who are great at being scientific minds(individually) but have such a hard time thinking of big picture.

If USA closes off immigration right now to scientific minds around the world then maybe USA can lag..but until then West and USA is way ahead barring Japan and South Korea.(who support USA)

Where are they going to fly these from? All runways, airfields in Ukraine are destroyed.

If they fly off from Poland with Ukranian pilots, Russia will bomb the airbases in Poland. Triggering Nato article 5.

I doubt the Yanks are stupid enough to allow such a scenario.

Russians were using conscripts for this. Russia will lose this war in their own home if they are not careful whom they are deploying, young mothers and wives will be super mad!

NATO did expand east while Russia was redeeming and recuperating. Putin has been asking NATO to stop repeatedly since as early as 2007. It seems Ukraine was his red line.

Countries have been joining Nato since the 90's. Russia was told this wouldnt happen.

Ukraine is the red line. Its embarrasing to read some lunatics defending missiles on Russia's borders but would insist no missiles on USA borders. The world doesn run according to such nonsense.

Russia has made a total mess of this desperate attempt to recreate the Tsarist fantasies of Putin. The best of it is that Russia offered peace terms which included annexation of Crimea and "independence" for the 2 regions but what was confusing was that there was no mention of de Nazifying Ukraine. I suppose it worked to get the useful idiots that believed it. The more I see the bone head killing innocent people the more my blood boils. Don't we have enough killing in the World and this loser wants to kill more.

"Ukraine has biological research facilities, which in fact we are now quite concerned Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to gain control of," senior State Department official Victoria Nuland told US lawmakers at a hearing when asked directly whether Ukraine has bioweapons.

"So we are working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach."

https://english.alaraby.co.uk/news/us-concerned-russia-wants-seize-ukraine-bio-research

Now the Yanks have admitted they are aware/control of these biological warfare labs.

Not much on the BBC about this?

Those suggesting Putin is crazy, idiot etc are as deluded as one can become. He knew Ukraine was being used to launch all sorts of disgusting attacks against Russia inc biological warfare.

Hopefully Russia will end this soon and not let it drag out too long.

Too much BBC pal.

Russia could obliterate Ukraine in days but is being cautious unlike Nato which bombed tens of thousands of civilians in Iraq in the first days of their shock and awe. If Russia employed same tactics, you would be crying they are too aggressive. So accept Russia taking things slowly or better still write to your MP demanding peace talks.,

Or rather Ukraine was Putins gold pot, which could greatly increase supply of agriculture produce to russia and bring down inflation there, give him easy access to europe and continue to block any oil/gas pipelines from black sea and ME, and give him his dream of expansion.

Also point to note here, is that it wasnt nato that was desperate for ukraine to join them, it was ukraine them selves begging nato, nato were literally delaying them, as well as EU.

AS the historian Yuval Noah put it:

"Putin’s defenders blame the war on “NATO expansion”. How can anyone blame NATO when it is Russian bombs that are falling on Kyiv? NATO never expands by force. Countries join NATO because it is their own wish. And countries wish to join NATO not because they want to conquer their neighbors, but because they are afraid of one particular neighbor. And when you see the images from Ukraine, can you blame countries like Estonia or Poland for fearing Russia?

Putin’s defenders say Russia feared it would be invaded. By who exactly? The last time anyone invaded Russia was when Hitler did it 80 years ago, and who is crazy enough to want to do it again? Was the German army secretly massing on the border in preparation for Blitzkrieg? Did Napoleon rise from his grave to lead a French army to Moscow? Can you name a single country that was preparing to invade Russia in 2022?"

What a clown. There was an agreement no ex soviet nations would join Nato in the 90's. Since then one after another are joining with no threats from Russia forcing them to join them.

This same clown would cry like a little b if Russia sends missiles to be deployed from Cuba or Mexico.

Nobody but Nato lapdogs take Yanks seriously over this conflict.

The BBC is reporting the following……

A maternity ward and a children's ward have been destroyed in a Russian air strike on a hospital in the southern city of Mariupol, officials there say.

"The destruction is colossal," the city council says. There are reports of many dead and injured, with children buried under rubble.

The UN called the attack "shocking" while the UK said it was "abhorrent".

Yuval is a respected historian and writes some interesting books but I don't agree with him on this and his argument is incredibly naive. In fact his opinion should be immediately discounted from this debate.

Firstly, if he is willing to accept the existence of Israel based on historical ownership then he should be ok with Russia claiming historical ownership over areas of Ukraine.

Secondly, he is presenting a black and white and scenario. Surely a country that has seen images of Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq would want NATO nowhere on their door step. Especially when NATO has directly threatened Russia. In fact the whole existence of NATO is a historically anti-soviet and in modern terms its objective is to defeat Russia.

Yuval needs to learn his audience aren't dummies that are stitched up at the back.

I dont think he accepts the existence of Israel.

As for eastern european states, the case is if not NATO who will protect them from Putin turning them into another Belarus.

He is a charlatan mate.

He changed the text in the Russian version of his book to be anti-trump, instead of anti-putin which was in the books for the western audience.

I know people say play the ball and not the man, but hypocrites and opportunists must be called out at every opportunity.

Yes very sound statement there: three currencies whose exchange rate is artificially manipulated by their sovereign government will replace euro and dollar as the global currencies.

Good luck with this deck of cards you are building a castle with.

NATO did expand east while Russia was redeeming and recuperating. Putin has been asking NATO to stop repeatedly since as early as 2007. It seems Ukraine was his red line.
Or could it just be that there are no oil and gas pipelines through Latvia abs Estonia but one through Ukraine. And they there have been significant offshore oil reserves off of the coast of Ukraine and crimea offers Russia a rare warm water sea port?

NATO expansion is just the smoke screen but not completely irrelevant. It’s the whole resource fight that is the rationale for this war.

LOL! The Euro and USD are also artificially manipulated by their respective governments.

Honestly the born of today.

Oh yeah and Nato is only concerned about democracy and world peace.

Ukraine's president has told Sky News that his country cannot stop the war against Russia on its own and said nations must act now before it is "too late".

Speaking to Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford inside the leader's office in Ukraine's capital city, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his call for the West to impose a no-fly zone.

He accused countries of being indecisive on the issue of "closing" the skies against what he called "the Nazis" - and said of Western nations: "You can't decide to close or not to close... you can't decide.

"If you are united against the Nazis and this terror, you have to close. Don't wait for me ask you several times, a million times. Close the sky.

"Close the sky and stop the bombing," he said, appealing for the world to act faster.

Asked about Western concerns around the potential of a no-fly zone escalating the conflict, and bringing about a direct confrontation with Russia making it worse, he said: "Worse for whom? For our families? No... For them..? Who knows? Nobody knows. But we know that exactly that now is very bad. And in future it will be too late.

"Believe me, if it's prolonged this way, you will see... they will close the sky but we will lose millions of people."

He added: "The third world war will start and only then you will make a no-fly zone - but it will be too late."

Key developments:
• Chernobyl radiation fears as minister calls for Russia to allow for urgent repairs
• Children buried under rubble after Russian airstrike hit Mariupol maternity hospital, Zelenskyy says
• West has 'serious concern' Putin could unleash chemical weapons on Kyiv
• Moscow's claims of biological weapons programme in war-hit country are 'absurd propaganda', says US
• Home Office confirm new UK visa centre in Lille will not accept walk-in applications from Ukrainian refugees

He said that Russian forces "can occupy us but you definitely can't win", saying Russian President Vladimir Putin was "going directly to hell".

He said that NATO allies should not have to tell people in Ukraine who lost their children "sorry we didn't do it yesterday, one week ago. We didn't push Putin, we didn't speak with him a lot, we didn't find the dialogue with him. We did nothing and it's true, yesterday the world did nothing… I'm sorry, but it's true".

It comes amid reports Russian strikes destroyed a maternity hospital in one of the worst-hit cities, Mariupol.

The Ukrainian government said 1,170 civilians have been killed in Mariupol since Russia began its invasion two weeks ago, citing the city's deputy mayor.

Dmytro Gurin, a Ukrainian MP, challenged NATO and European countries on which line Russia had to cross before they got more involved.

He asked: "Is the blood of the Ukrainian people red enough?

"Putin won't stop with Ukraine, and the West could end up with a war on its territory too. You now have to choose.

"You will ask in two years when they are bombing infrastructure in the middle of Europe - why didn't you close the sky?"

Evelyn Farkas, former US deputy assistant secretary of defence, said a military no-fly zone would be too risky.

However, she added: "A humanitarian no-fly zone does not require taking anything out on the ground or in the air unless it intrudes.

"So, some of us have called for a humanitarian no-fly zone in order to enforce humanitarian corridors."

Ms Farkas admitted NATO jets would have to attack Russian forces that broke such a rule - but that it could be possible as Mr Putin is not keen on a war with the bloc.

On the suggestion of Poland handing over jets to give to Ukraine to use, she added: "If one option is providing fighter aircraft to Ukraine then that's also a potential means to achieve that objective.

"I don't regard that as being escalatory. Although every time we have these public debates, Vladimir Putin comes out and makes a statement saying this would be tantamount to war.

"When indeed he's already said our economic sanctions are the equivalent of waging war on Russia.

"So we should really keep our own council and have these conversations in private - government to government."

Asked if he was prepared to make a deal with Mr Putin, he said that dialogue is always a compromise.

Ukraine alone cannot end the war, he said. "It's the decision of two countries and two peoples and the decision of two presidents - and one of them is Putin, so we'll see."

And speaking about whether he thinks staying in his role and remaining in the country was the right decision, he said he thinks it would be difficult for Ukraine to remain united in the face of the Russian onslaught.

"I think my decision was right," he said. "Who knows. We will see in future."

Speaking after days of siege in the southern city of Mariupol, Mr Zelenskyy said Russia is treating Ukrainians like animals by blocking access to basic necessities.

"They want us to feel like animals because they blocked our cities. The biggest cities in Ukraine and they blocked (them) and because they don't want our people to get some food, water."

Two more hospitals have been damaged in Russian airstrikes on the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr, its mayor has said.

Mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn said one of them was a children's hospital and no one was wounded.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed there have been 18 attacks on medical facilities since the Russian invasion began.

Apparently the UA forces and the Azov battalion are using these buildings to launch weapons.

No one is coming Zalensky

It is better to be the bigger man and save humanity by throwing in the towel. No one will see you as a coward especially considering how US and UK have abandoned Ukrain

You do realise we will still be living in the real world right? Or are we going to be digitised so we can eat, sleep and pass waste in a new virtual world run by Microsoft? Maybe instead of eating a Big Mac you'll be uploading e-proteins?

1,207 'bodies collected on the streets' of Mariupol
Sergei Orlov, the deputy mayor of the southern port city, says he doesn't know exactly how many people have been killed since Russian shelling began.

However, he told the BBC that 1,207 bodies have been "collected on the street".

The port city on the Black Sea has faced days of heavy airstrikes and shelling by Russian troops, with a maternity hospital destroyed yesterday afternoon, killing two adults and a child.

But Mr Orlov says it has been impossible to identify all of the dead.

He added that 47 people were buried in a mass grave when it became impossible to reach burial sites.

Damn. You were right. Nailed it.

Damn. You were right. Nailed it.

Ukrainian PM has been paid very well, some say a billion,given a big mansion in USA. He is being handled by CIA/MI5, told what to say, told what to do, told to continue this war for as long as possible. Liz Trus clearly said UK citizens will have to suffer economic hardships for Ukraine. She knew Ukraine wouldnd accept any peace deal because it has been told not to.

There is only one good scenario for this now, Russia to end this as quickly as possible.

The hospital bombing , the video images of destruction for years will keep the Ukrainians hatred towards Russians alive.

Ukraine’s expat community is very strong, Russia would need all the intelligence to deal with this.

Without help from China, Israel: Russia is going to have a real hard time facing Ukrainian wrath around the world.

If so of course its disgusting.

But Russia has a different view.

Today, 12:45 pm

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claims that a hospital that was attacked in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol had been serving as a military base for nationalists.

“This maternity hospital has long been occupied by the Azov Battalion and other radicals. They drove out the women in labor, nurses and general staff. It was the base of the ultra-radical Azov Battalion,” Lavrov says, following talks in Turkey with his Ukrainian counterpart.

Since the Russians exposed the bio weapons labs in Ukraine, the US and UK are bringing out a new story.

Ukraine war: Boris Johnson tells Sky News he fears Vladimir Putin may use chemical weapons as it is 'straight out of Russia's playbook'

https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-...-is-straight-out-of-russias-playbook-12562547

Now that Russia has made these claims, she added, “We should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them.”

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/3/10/us-denies-russian-claims-of-biowarfare-labs-in-ukraine

Term 'False Flag' used to be laughed at, conspiracy theory but now western leaders are using this openly.

ITs more likey Nato will conduct some sort of false flag attack with bio weapons. Firstly it will change the story of them trying to hide these labs and secondly cause more uproar against Russia.

USA destroyed Iraq murdering so many inc women and children on the lie of WMD. Surely they should understand Russia's concern of these WMDs in Ukraine?

You are quoting Israel media for obvious reasons. Irrespective everyone uses this excuse and shield, as you said just hope no patients/staff died.

You think too much.

I picked the first official source which showed up.

Azov are terrorists, Neo-Nazis, they are hell bent on violence & war, it wouldnt surprise me esp since Russians have attempted to keep civilian deaths to a minium. Russia could have done shock & awe as Yanks did in Iraq, the war would be over by now but of course huge death toll.

Are you saying entire Ukraine is filled with Neo Nazis? Maybe Russians should had just attacked and killed Azov in silent missions instead of displacing the entire population of Ukraine!

Americans were wrong to attack Iraq and so are Russians!

Neo Nazis have taken up high ranking posts in most regiments and also in the government. The issue here is they are now using human shields.

You cannot compare Iraq to Urkraine in terms of destruction and killings of innocents.

My grandfather and 2 of my uncles were in the military. One of my uncles died during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka. My grandfather even has some training from the USSR. My grandfather refuses to believe this is the Russian main military. He believes they are setting logistics and trying to use up ammunition of the Ukrainians on the lesser skilled soldiers and weaker/older equipment first. Once they set up logistics closer to Kiev and capture a nearby airport they will fly in and bring in their skilled soldiers. He also believes the soviet tactic is to decimate the city and then go in. My grandfather is one of the smartest men in i've come across. He barely gets things wrong.

BBC News - War in Ukraine: Facebook to allow calls for violence against Putin

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-60702619

The owner of Facebook and Instagram will allow users in some countries to call for violence against Vladimir Putin and Russian soldiers.

Meta says it has "temporarily" made allowances for some violent speech, like "death to the Russian invaders," that would usually break its rules.

--------

Further hypocrisy of the West exposed. Meta now making exceptions to its policy to promote violence.

Despicable.

What has happened in the last 24 hours?

Today marks the 16th day of warfare in Ukraine.

In the last 24 hours, Russia said humanitarian corridors will open every day at 7am GMT to allow for the evacuation of civilians from certain parts of Ukraine. This is despite the failure of several agreed ceasefires.

Boris Johnson tells Sky's Beth Rigby he fears Vladimir Putin may use chemical weapons as it is "straight out of Russia's playbook";

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that he is worried about allegations of chemical warfare, after Russian accusations that US is developing biological weapons in Ukraine;

Russia says it will open humanitarian corridors at 10am Moscow time (7am GMT) every day to allow for the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians. Ukraine has yet to comment, and details are scarce;

Ukraine says 80,000 people were evacuated from the war-torn Sumy and Kyiv regions in the last 48 hours. The country's interior minister claims 400,000 have fled conflict zones in total;

The International Committee of the Red Cross says people in the besieged city of Mariupol are "attacking each other for food" as supplies run low;

Ukrainian officials say 1,207 bodies have been collected from the streets of the southern port city in recent days. Meanwhile, three people were killed in an attack on a children's hospital yesterday;

No progress was made on a ceasefire after talks between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Russia in Turkey earlier today;

Russian planes 'bomb institute that contains experimental nuclear reactor'

The Ukrainian parliament has said that Russian forces have attacked an institute in the city of Kharkiv that contains an experimental nuclear reactor.

A neighbouring hostel was on fire, it added.

In a tweet, the parliament's official website said that fighting close to the Institute of Physics and Technology was continuing.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the minister of internal affairs, said the institute contained "sources of radiation used for scientific purposes".

Later, the Interfax Ukraine news agency said firefighters were in the process of extinguishing the flames at the hostel, which covers about 100 square metres.

Ukraine's nuclear regulator said that "once again" Russia had "committed an act of nuclear terrorism".

It has also attacked the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility.

The blind support that so many Pakistanis have for Russia is baffling. Russia is not fighting for Muslims, nor is it fighting against Nazism. It is a political fight in which both countries have blame but the Russians started the actual violence.
If India invades Pakistan in the name of Pakistan having pro China policies and close cooperation with Chinese govt, how many of you will say it is ok to do so ?

The United Nations Security Council will meet later today to talk about Russia's claims that the US and Ukraine are developing biological weapons.

The allegations have been made a number of times, most recently on Wednesday by Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, and Dmitry Chumakov, a Russian deputy UN ambassador.

Mr Chumakov urged Western news outlets to investigate the "secret biological laboratories in Ukraine" and Ms Zakharova said Russian troops had found documents in Ukraine showing an "emergency attempt to erase evidence of military biological programmes".

Russia's defence ministry published a "briefing" about the US Defence Threat Reduction Agency's "leading role" in "financing and conducting military biological research on the territory of Ukraine".

The ministry said some of the research - which it described as "reckless and irresponsible" - was examining animals such as bats as "potential biological weapons agents".

The US has dismissed the claims as "laughable" and White House press secretary Jen Psaki described them as "preposterous", adding: "This is all an obvious ploy by Russia to try to justify its further pre-meditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine."

Olivia Dalton, spokesperson for the US Mission to the United Nations, said: "This is exactly the kind of false flag effort we have warned Russia might initiate to justify a biological or chemical weapons attack.

"We're not going to let Russia gaslight the world or use the UN Security Council as a venue for promoting their disinformation."

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby called the Russian allegations "a bunch of malarkey".

Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia's claims "make me really really worried because we've been repeatedly convinced: if you want to know Russia's plans, look at what Russia accuses others of".

Like many other countries, Ukraine has public health laboratories researching how to fight dangerous diseases affecting both animals and humans.

This research has received support from the US, Europe, and the World Health Organisation.

Mr Zelenskyy insisted these centres were engaged only in "ordinary science - not military technology".

He added: "We are decent people.

"I am the president of a decent country, a decent nation, and the father of two children.

"And no chemical or any other weapons of mass destruction were developed on my land.

"The whole world knows that.

"You [Russia] know that, and if you do something like that against us, you will get the most severe sanctions response."

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the WHO said it was "unaware" of any Ukrainian government activity which is "inconsistent with its international treaty obligations, including on chemical weapons or biological weapons".

Ukraine warned to destroy high-threat pathogens

Meanwhile, the WHO has urged Ukraine to destroy any high-threat pathogens in its public health labs to prevent "any potential spills" that could spread disease.

The organisation told Reuters news agency it had worked with Ukraine's public health officials for several years to prevent "accidental or deliberate release of pathogens".

It added: "As part of this work, WHO has strongly recommended to the Ministry of Health in Ukraine and other responsible bodies to destroy high-threat pathogens to prevent any potential spills".

There were no details given on what kinds of pathogens might be housed in Ukraine's labs.

A ridiculous comparison if I ever read one.

It’s not just Pakistanis siding with Russia, half the world is, and its got nothing to do with religion, but everything to do with Russia standing up to a Western bully, NATO. Russia didn’t start the violence, USA did by engineering a coup in Ukraine 8 years ago. Putin didn’t wake up one morning and decided to invade Ukraine, this is years in the making, and you beloved NATO dare not to wage war against Russia, cos that’s what bullies do, they run away when faced with someone who is strong unlike the countries NATO/USA have bombed beyond recognition.

Putin says Russia to welcome volunteers from Middle East to fight Ukraine

LONDON:
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the green light on Friday to bring in thousands of fighters from the Middle East to fight against Ukraine.

At a meeting of Russia's Security Council, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers in the Middle East who were ready to come to fight with Russian-backed forces in the breakaway Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

"If you see that there are these people who want of their own accord, not for money, to come to help the people living in Donbass, then we need to give them what they want and help them get to the conflict zone," Putin said.

Shoigu also proposed that Western-made Javelin and Stinger missiles that were captured by the Russian army in Ukraine should be handed over to Donbass forces.

"As to the delivery of arms, especially Western-made ones which have fallen into the hands of the Russian army - of course, I support the possibility of giving these to the military units of the Lugansk and Donetsk people's republics," Putin said.

"Please do this," he told Shoigu.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 soon after Putin recognised the breakaway territories as independent states, in an action condemned internationally as illegal.

Russia says its "special military operation" in Ukraine was a forced response to what it calls genocide by Ukraine against Russian speakers in the east of the country - a pretext rejected by Kyiv and the West as baseless war propaganda.

Shoigu said the Russian military planned to strengthen its Western border after what he said was an increase in Western military units on Russia's border.
