Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman faces possible punishment after he reportedly assaulted a fan during a first-class match in Rajshahi last week. The incident is said to have taken place on the second day of Rajshahi Division’s National Cricket League game against Dhaka Metropolis.

According to reports, after a supporter made a noise directed at Sabbir during one of the innings breaks, Sabbir took permission from the on-field umpires to leave the ground and then went behind the sight screen to physically abuse the young boy, who had apparently been brought into the playing area by an acquaintance of Sabbir’s.

The incident was supposedly first seen by the reserve umpire who reported it to the match referee, who in turn reported it to the BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan, who then forwarded it to the board’s disciplinary committee. This was as per procedure, since Sabbir is being investigated for a level-4 offence. According to sources, Sabbir was also quite “aggressive” with match referee Showkatur Rahman, when he called him in on the third day of the game to investigate the incident.

Sheikh Sohel, vice-chairman of the disciplinary committee, said that Sabbir would be subjected to heavy punishment if found guilty. In the case of level-4 offences, penalties include multiple-match bans in addition to a fine of Tk 5 lakh (US$6,000 approx).

Sohel told the Prothom Alo newspaper: “The moment I get the report, we will call him. But after seeing the report if we feel we don’t need to talk to him, we will quickly mete out the punishment.”

Sabbir has faced disciplinary action a number of times in the past, the most severe case of which was in 2016 when the BCB fined him Tk 12 lakh (US$14,000 approx) for “serious off-field disciplinary breaches” during the Bangladesh Premier League.

Should know better than to hit fans. I personally think violence (from a sportsmen point of view) to fans is only justifiable if they are also using violence. If a fan is just heckling you, simply ignore it.

Bangladesh revokes Sabbir Rahman’s contract over assault

DHAKA: Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman has had his central contract revoked for assaulting a young cricket fan who taunted him during a match last month. The 26-year-old was also slapped with a six-month ban from the domestic game and a fine of two million taka ($24,000) over the incident, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan said. The national contract for Bangladesh players was due to go into effect on January 1, 2018.

The decision came after Rahman was found to have assaulted a young fan, believed to be aged 12, who had taunted him during a first-class National Cricket League match in Rahman’s home town of Rajshahi on December 21. During an innings break, the middle-order batsman went behind the sightscreen and beat the boy.

He was also under fire for arguing with the match referee when he was called for a hearing.

“We would like to send a strong message to all players on the first day of New Year. No matter how big a player one might be, he must maintain discipline,” Hassan told reporters. “He (Rahman) was called for a hearing earlier and we also received the report from the match referee. He’ll no longer be a contracted player,” he said.

Rahman, who has played 10 Tests, 46 one-day internationals and 33 Twenty20 internationals since his international debut in 2014, has a history of disciplinary problems. In 2016 the BCB fined him 30 percent of his contract money in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament when he allegedly took a female guest to his hotel room during the tournament.

The board also fined star batsman Tamim Iqbal half-a-million taka ($6,000) after he spoke publicly against the BCB’s pitch preparations during the recent edition of the BPL.

12-year-old kid...

Come on, for goodness sakes.

You're being paid x-amount to not only perform on-field by off it too. That's just not right, no matter what some fans do/say you never lay hands on them. Report him and get it sorted, no need for the theatrics.

On a side note, whomever created this thread deserves to be banned for a day.

"A Virat Kohli in the making?" :))

Beating a 12 year old? Simply not on. Should be banned for a year to be honest.

Having said that, some fans can be annoying and especially when you are out on the field in the heat, any bad comment might sound 100 times worse than it is.

Mumbai, Jan 4: Bangladesh middle order batsman Sabbir Rahman, whose central contract has been revoked as punishment for assaulting a fan during a first-class match in Dhaka is still "eligible" to play the international cricket, according to Sheikh Sohel, the vice chairman of the committee, who now is an official in the marketing committee.

"We have barred him for playing only the domestic cricket for six months, but he can still play the international cricket. The incident happened in the domestic match and therefore he is penalized for the domestic matches. If the selectors chose him for the national team he still can play", Shekh Sohel, speaking exclusively from Dhaka, said.

He has also been fined Tk 20 lakh.

Sabbir is the first cricketer from Bangladesh who has been punished for assaulting a fan in the match.

However, there are instances of cricketers involved in fight with the spectators at the international level.

Inzamam ul Haq had a fight with the spectator (1997, Pakistan-India match, Toronto) when a spectator repeatedly called him potoato on a megaphone.

Windies player Sylvester Clarke threw a brick back into the crowd that had been thrown at him in Pakistan.

John Snow in 1970-71 was manhandled by a spectator rather than 'had a fight'.

Heavy fine

During the third Test of Pakistan's 1988 tour of the West Indies, a spectator was constantly harassing Abdul Qadir at Bridgetown, Barbados. Irritated, Qadir crossed the fence and threw a punch at the man in question. Qadir was later taken to the police station and had to apologize.

When informed him about the recent incident involving Bangladeshi player, Qadir, speaking exclusively from Pakistan said, "there is no guideline in the ICC rule book on punishment. The players involved in fight with the spectators should not be banned but only be heavily fined. Only those players, who fix the matches should be life-banned".

"Spectators come to see the players and not the players play for the spectators. I fail to understand why the player should be barred. They should be taught to behave properly", he added.

So he is banned from domestic cricket but allowed to play international cricket? :danish

Genius BCB let Sabbir play test match because he can't play anything else.

Do they even realize the importance of test matches? Is it a joke?

People will do anything to wear the test jersey. And a child beater like Sabbir gets into the test side on the basis of child beating credentials

Did Sabbir threaten a fan again?

Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman may have landed himself in disciplinary trouble yet again after screenshots emerged of abusive language used and threats issued towards a fan from a Facebook account bearing his name and one he used in conversation with media personnel in the past.

It is known upon good authority that the account 'Shabbir Rahaman Roman' was Sabbir's personal account as he often interacted with the media through the account, which also boasted more than 90,000 followers.

“Players, especially national players, are given definitive guidelines on how to behave with fans and on social media,” Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told The Daily Star yesterday. “They have been told that they must be very careful when interacting with the public on social media. Since it is out in the public and when it has come to the board's knowledge, if such a breach has occurred it will be referred to the disciplinary committee and appropriate action taken.”

A Facebook user, professing himself to be a Bangladesh fan and a Sabbir admirer, posted a sarcastic message about the batsman after he was dismissed for 12 in the penultimate over of Bangladesh's loss against West Indies in the second ODI in Guyana on Wednesday, or Thursday morning Bangladesh time.

The user, a Dhaka University student, poked fun at Sabbir saying that the improvement of 'Sir Donald Sabbir Rahman Bradman' was quite mysterious. Sabbir's account was not mentioned in that remark, but another user replying to his post mentioned the aforementioned account, which is presumably how 'Shabbir Rahaman Roman' came to know about it.

About three hours later, both users got identical private messages from the unverified account, filled with expletives and ending with a threat about how they would regret their words once he, presumably Sabbir, returned to the country. And then both users were blocked.

“I can't understand why he would block me,” the user who prefers to remain anonymous told The Daily Star on Friday night.

The Daily Star also verified that the screenshot was authentic by seeing it first-hand on the user's phone. “I am a fan of his and if he plays well in the next match, we will all be chanting his name. Also, I never used a bad word when I posted that message on my Facebook, but he abused me in unspeakable language. I am sorry if I offended him but it was not right to threaten me; he could have just pointed out my mistake instead.”

It may also be mentioned here that the account of 'Shabbir Rahaman Roman' was either deactivated or deleted around eight or nine hours after the offensive message was sent and about an hour or two after some media outlets, including The Daily Star, attempted to get Sabbir's side of the story through the team manager in West Indies.

As mentioned, it is fairly well known that this account is Sabbir's personal account. It is common practice for players to have a verified Facebook page to interact with fans and a personal account for friends and family. If true, it is all the more damning because while verified pages are usually left to an appointed social media manager, personal accounts are normally maintained by the players themselves -- which means that it is unlikely that someone other than Sabbir penned the threat.

When asked if there are provisions for harsher sanctions against a repeat offender like Sabbir, Chowdhury said that was an internal matter and not to be discussed with the media.

Sabbir is no stranger to disciplinary breaches and abusive behaviour. In November last year, during a National Cricket League match for Rajshahi in Rajshahi, Sabbir had physically assaulted a young fan during a break in play because the fan allegedly made cat noises as a humorous allusion to Sabbir's cat-like eyes. He had also threatened the match officials with dire consequences if they reported the incident.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan had announced on the first day of 2018 that Sabbir would be banned from domestic cricket for six months, and levied a hefty fine. However, he was allowed to continue playing for the national team -- which to many eyes drastically reduced the punitive effect of the ban as national appearances are the main currency for young cricketers. The six-month ban would also not have affected Sabbir's participation in the most lucrative domestic competition, the Bangladesh Premier League, which was then slated for November 2018.

Bd players are lazy, money and fame gets to them real quick. Nasir Hossain and Sabbir are good exmple of that.

Only real good Bd players who at least works hard is Tamim, Shakib, Mushy, and Mahmudullah.

He must be kicked out from the team.

You should see his "mushki hashi" or smirk after hitting two fours in a row.

He then got out next ball, haha. I used to think he would be at least as good as Maxwell, but lets see how he goes about in the future.

That stupid has only attitude but no technique. Don't care to improve. Must be kicked out these types of all bd players (like nasir, sabbir, soumya etc.)

Nasir should be brought back instead of Sabbir, Shanto should be given chance in place of Enamul.

Sabbir Rahman banned for six months for multiple disciplinary breaches

Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday recommended a six-month ban for batsman Sabbir Rahman from international cricket for multiple disciplinary breaches but spared Nasir Hossain for the time being.

‘We recommended six-month suspension for Sabbir from international cricket. We will now send the recommendation to our president. Subject to his approval the ban will be effective from tomorrow (Sunday), BCB director Ismail Haider told reporters after disciplinary hearing of the batsman in Dhaka.

Sabbir, who was axed from Bangladesh squad for Asia Cup this month, completed his six-month ban from domestic cricket in June for assaulting a minor boy during a domestic first-class match.

While serving his domestic ban Sabbir hit the headline for hitting team-mate Mehedi Hasan during a Twenty20 series against Afghanistan in June and abusing a fan in Facebook last month.

On Saturday, the BCB also called batsman Mosaddek Hossain and Nasir Hossain for a hearing.

BCB director Haider said Nasir they spared Nasir from attending the hearing the batsman was already out of the national team for injury.

BCB warned Mosaddek to be careful of his behaviour after his wife his filed a lawsuit against him for seeking Tk 10 lakh as dowry.

‘He was asked to be cautious about his behaviour in future. His case is a family matter. We have to wait until court gives a decision,’ he said.

It was difficult enough to be w/o the original Kohli, now the Bangladeshi Kohli is absent too :(

Probably a blessing in disguise for Bangladesh. Well maybe, you never know he was probably the best they had to offer.

Shehzad's celebrity mindset+ Stokes rubbish behaviour- their batting ability= Sabbir.I am very disappointed that he is banned for only 6 months. But it's ok if he is not considered for national team for extra 1 year. His batting has also become proportional to his off field behaviour. Those players who are engaged themselves to off field scandals should be given tough punishment, if they repeat it then they should be banned for life. There is very much little margin of error when you put on your national jersey.

He might have played his last game in BD colors - unofficially, this ban is not for 6 months only.

Why you think that he is a superstar in BD? Don't post rubbish that exposes you.

Well if you look his off field antics, social media followings, some of the commercial shoots he did....all suggest that he is being treated as a celebrity in BD. Not a high bar mind you.

Glad that an eve teaser like him got banned.

Ki moja ;-)

He is indeed a celebrity - if someone plays for National team in 3 formats among 170 million people, in what is the major sports now days, any one should be. For a sanity check, you can track back to see the reaction among their fans when Ashosk Dinda or Shardul Thakur were selected for IND (No disrespect to any one here). You said superstar - I hope you understand the difference between celebrity & superstar.

I thought you actually had to do something to have the ego of a Stokes or even a Shehzad. This guy has gone past 70 once in his international career.

Hope the players like nasir, shabbir is out of bd team forever. There are many alternatives of them in BD, even better. Hope bcb give chances to the new bunch instead of these rubbish nasir, shabbir.

I said minus their batting ability, only got ego and that looks weird
