Sam Curran - Discussion Thread

Impressive young player. Should be utilised well by England. He is still young and will have his flaws but needs to be backed.

India makes all debutants look good nothing special here. If you want a stellar start to your career debut against India.

You clearly havent seen him bowl and are just seeing the scorecard. The kid can swing both ways and is a left hander bowling at 83-85 mph. He can bat against pace and spin and hardly has a weakness. If he doesnt suceed then no-one will..
He swings the duke ball in England both ways which even Pandya is doing. But that doesn't mean that he will be able to do that with SG ball in India or with Kookaburra in Australia.Even Anderson and Broad were not able to repeat their heroics outside England.
To me, he is too short and too slow to succeed outside England.

I love his attitude
In test cricket Sam Curran will be 3rd choice allrounder for now due to presence of stokes & woakes.
In English conditions he gets in the team even as a bowler if Anderson or broad gets injured due to left arm variation he brings in the bowling attack.
But In overseas tours specially in subcontinent it will not be easy for him to make playing 11. England bowling attack struggling to take 20 wickets on flat wickets and are in desperate need for young reliable quicks. Even woakes's place is not guaranteed while playing in subcontinent so I think Sam Curran will have to deal with similar situation.

On the other hand addition of sam Curran will make one day & t20 squad even more stronger. Infact I believe in t20i he can beat both stokes & woakes to be a 1st choice allrounder in playing 11.

What a fighter he is! Great attitude this lad, really good signs.

Takes the prize wicket of Virat Kohli.

A season in IPL beckons and possibly end of his dream run for England.

If England wins, Sam Curran is Man of the Series. He has won 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 2/3 matches.

He has been excellent, his batting alone is so valuable to England.

Excellent player he is. Already played a match winning knock in first game and now this.

This kid will become the no 1 all rounder in the world. Dosent look to fazed by the spotlight.

Impressive start to his career. He has shown character having stepped up at key moments in this series.

He also brings variety in their pace attack - England played four 82-85mph right arm seamers in the last Ashes and got exposed as a one dimensional attack.

Bowling wise he can learn from someone like Chaminda Vaas who was able to be effective in Asian conditions on flat tracks despite not possessing a great deal of pace.

Sam Curran yet again amongst the runs, scored 64 off 119 taking England from 171/7 to a respectable total of 285/10. His late order contributions have proven to be the difference in almost every test match that England has won this year. what a find for England. Can make a team on his batting alone at the moment.

Technically correct as a batsmen and a fighter. He will fill out bodywise and add a yard of pace over next few years and become a very good bowler as well.

He is emense for England. Root was very right, it’s like playing with two Stroke !!

I wish we had that luxury☹️☹️

I wonder has The New Botham come at last.

Star in the making!!!!!! another year or so and he 'll come to the top. This kid have Nerve of steal along with his talent which is a plus in International cricket. :salute

He was the difference between India and England series which England won.

Everytime England were in trouble, he comes out with the bat and bails them out. He will take them to a score which India cannot win.

Even with the ball, he got many crucial breakthroughs. I think he got Kohli out 3 times in that Test series.

Well said.

Also tormented Pakistan iirc.

Guy's a beast.

What an impressive young cricketer. Tremendous ability and has bailed England out of difficult situations several times already in his short international career. I don't recall seeing a 20 year old cricketer with such mental strength for quite some time.

England all-rounder Sam Curran was bought for £800,000 by Kings XI Punjab in the auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League.

The 20-year-old attracted the third-highest bid of 72m rupees, having entered with a base price of 20m.

Hyderabad Sunrisers signed England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow for £250,000, but Eoin Morgan and Chris Woakes went unsold in Jaipur.

The 12th season of the IPL will run from 29 March to 19 May.

The venue for the tournament has yet to be decided.

Players involved in England's 2019 World Cup squad must return from India by 25 April.

Rising star Curran in demand
Left-arm seamer Curran has enjoyed a remarkable six months after making his Test debut in June.

He was named England's man of the series in their 4-1 victory over India and was part of the Surrey team that won the County Championship.

He was also part of England's 3-0 triumph in Sri Lanka this winter, although he missed the final Test with a side strain.

Curran has played two one-day internationals but no Twenty20s for England.

Kings XI won the bidding for him despite interest from Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

What about the other English players?
Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali were among the England players retained by their franchises last month.

However, only five of the 19 England-qualified players who entered their names into the auction attracted bids.

As well as Curran and Bairstow, England batsman Joe Denly was bought for £110,000 by Kolkata Knight Riders, who also signed ex-England seamer Harry Gurney for £85,000, while Rajasthan Royals recruited Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone for £55,000.

England limited-overs captain Morgan, all-rounder Woakes, batsman Alex Hales and pace bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Jordan went unsold.

Highly-rated Sussex all-rounder Jofra Archer, who qualifies to play for England in January after the England and Wales Cricket Board changed its regulations, was retained by Rajasthan.

Pat Brown, the 20-year-old Worcestershire seamer who was the leading wicket-taker in their triumphant T20 Blast campaign this summer, was overlooked despite a base price of £45,000.

Chennai Super Kings: Sam Billings (retained), David Willey (retained)

Delhi Capitals: None

Kings XI Punjab: Sam Curran (£800,000)

Kolkata Knight Riders: Joe Denly (£110,000), Harry Gurney (£85,000)

Mumbai Indians: None

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Jonny Bairstow (£250,000)

Rajasthan Royals: Jos Buttler (retained), Ben Stokes (retained), Jofra Archer (retained), Liam Livingstone (£55,000)

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Moeen Ali (retained)

Who were the most expensive buys?
Varun Chakravarthy, an Indian mystery spinner who has played only one first-class match, attracted the joint highest bid of £940,000 from Kings XI.

Rajasthan paid the same amount for India left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat.

£940,000 - Varun Chakravarthy (Ind), Kings XI Punjab
£940,000 - Jaydev Unadkat (Ind), Rajasthan Royals
£800,000 - Sam Curran (Eng), Kings XI Punjab
£715,000 - Colin Ingram (SA), Delhi Capitals
£560,000 - Carlos Brathwaite (WI), Kolkata Knight Riders

What about the other stars?
India legend and three-time IPL winner MS Dhoni will again line up for defending champions Chennai Super Kings, while West Indies' Chris Gayle remains part of the Kings XI squad.

Steve Smith and David Warner, who missed this year's IPL after being banned for their part in Australia's ball-tampering scandal, have been retained by Rajasthan and Hyderabad respectively.

However, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum - a veteran of every IPL since its inaugural edition in 2008 - was not bought at the auction after being released by Bangalore.

South Africa's Dale Steyn and former team-mate and pace bowler Morne Morkel did not attract buyers, while Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was released by Delhi.

Well deserved but thought he would carry on playing first class cricket to develop his skills. Don't see him playing at the WC, SO a little surprised that he made himself avaliable for the IPL.

But he deserves this after the year he has had. Performing against India certainly helped his case .

His stats don’t look to great in domestic T20 cricket. Credit to him for performing against India in the Test series which impressed Kohli I am sure. But I think his bowling is not as suited to T20 cricket. He doesn’t have enough pace to trouble batsmen you feel. He is young and impressed in the tests so is somebody who performs under pressure. His batting is explosive though as he did hit some great shots in the tests. Wish him luck.

Bowled absolute tripe in the 1st Test v WI. If you're going to bowl 80mph then you need relentless accuracy and control.

WI batsmen however were able to easily plunder runs from Curran meaning Anderson and Stokes were brought back for longer spells.

Broad must replace him in the 2nd Test.

What is “mental strength”? It is not a term used by Britons.

England all-rounder Sam Curran said that it’s a dream to represent his country at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, but is content to be playing in the 2019 Indian Premier League for now.

Curran, who had a breakout Test season last year, is currently engaged with Kings XI Punjab in the Indian league’s 12th season. He was the most expensive overseas purchase, at INR 7.2 crore (1 million USD approx.), thanks to a bidding war between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab. It was reward for a terrific rookie year in Test cricket, where he was named England’s Player of the Series in the Test matches against India at home.

“It’s a dream for every player to represent his country in the World Cup,” Curran told The Times of India. “I also want to represent my country in the mega tournament. For now, I am focusing on the IPL. I want to give my best.”

Curran also sounded optimistic of England’s chances at the tournament. England have never lifted the World Cup, but are heavy favourites to do so this time. They are playing at home and are a formidable one-day unit, ranked No.1 in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings.

“There is amazing one-day cricket being played by England,” Curran said. “The way England are playing in ODIs, the chances are bright. England playing at home are a strong side, and hope they have better luck at the World Cup.

“They have a bunch of talented cricketers, and I wish they carry on the same show at the World Cup. It will be amazing if they win the title in front of the home crowd.”

Sam Curran announced himself to the world with some strong performances in Test cricket Sam Curran announced himself to the world with some strong performances in Test cricket
As he prepares to be a part of that pursuit, Curran is getting to share the dressing room with some of the world’s top international cricketers, and is getting valuable game time and experience in a highly competitive league such as the IPL.

Curran was nine years old when the IPL came into existence, in 2008. Since then, he has come a long way to now being team-mates with the likes of Chris Gayle, KL Rahul and R Ashwin.

“I was playing cricket with my father in the backyard of my house when the IPL started,” he said. “I was learning the game at that point. I was watching big stars hitting the ball, taking wickets, and doing some great fielding on the television screen.

It’s a dream for every player to represent his country in the World Cup. I also want to represent my country in the mega tournament. For now, I am focusing on the IPL. I want to give my best.
Sam Curran

“I am really excited to be a part of the IPL. I really look forward to playing some good cricket and sharing the dressing room with the best players in the world.

“Punjab have a talented bunch of boys. It is a well-balanced side. I have shared net sessions with these players. I am sure I will learn a lot from players around the world. We have a great captain in Ashwin. He is a good leader. He did well for Punjab last year and I am sure he will guide Punjab to the title this year.”

Ben Curran brother of Sam & Tom Curran set to play first class competition in Zimbabwe (Logan Cup) for Southern Rocks From December 15th.

Coming in at number 8 and batting like this with the team of 168/6.

Superb.

A very good all-rounder. If there is some swing upfront, he can be very handy with bowl.

With bat, he has learnt to perform in pressure situations. Credit to IPL for shaping career of Sam Curran and teaching him how to keep it cool under pressure :inti

A quality player. He does need to improve with the ball, but impressed with his batting.

India badly needs some good plan against this boy. Has occasionally been the difference between the two teams for the last few series.

England are actually planning to make him the leader of Englands bowling in the far future for all formats.
Which is odd considering his bowling has been sub par especially in the test format. He's very young and showing signs of improvement.

Has huge potential, I doubt he will be in the test team for 1-2 years, will probably focus on the white ball for now.

How many times was he dropped today? There are some players who need some help from the opposition fielders to play innings like these. It's happening quite frequently these days. :inti

No they are not planning on making him the leader of the bowling attack. That is clearly Jofra Archer who is being groomed for that role in all formats.

One of the great innings you will ever see. Should have trusted Mark Wood and scores a few singles. That cost them the game at the end probably

Meh

Someone like Razzaq would have finished he match off but I'm sure you dont rate him

Razzaq was a terrific LOI all-rounder and it is Stokes and Pandya who should be compared with him, not a young Sam Curran.

He's not the most talented but he has a never say die attitude and that winning mentality.

Few cricketers have that mindset.

Meh

Someone like Razzaq would have finished he match off but I'm sure you dont rate him

Peak Razzaq (1999-2002) was one of the greatest ODI all-rounders of all time. He was on par with Stokes of today and a much better bowler than Pandya. He was far superior than Sam Curran as well.

Unfortunately, Razzaq was a massive age cheat as well. He was 5-6 years older than his official age.

His bowling nosedived from 2003 onwards when he was officially 24-25 but around 30 in reality.

He lost his pace and went from a genuine fast bowler capable of bowling at 90 mph to a trundler.

2003 onwards, his bowling became like Pandya and Sam Curran, and that greatly diminished his utility for the Pakistan side because he was hardly an all-rounder anymore.

As he grew older, his batting also declined and between 2005-2009, he barely did anything of note with the bat especially in ODI cricket.

That T20 against England in 2010 and that outrageous innings against South Africa in Abu Dhabi were his final contributions with the bat and a reminder of what he was capable of in his prime.

https://www.cricketcountry.com/news/jos-buttler-sees-shades-of-legendary-ms-dhoni-in-england-allrounder-sam-curran-975708

With England 200/7 in chase of 330 on Sunday, the match was heavily titled in the favour of Indian team before Sam Curran led an stunning revival with a knock he will remember for some time to come. While the end result may not have gone in favour of his team, Curran must be proud of his never-say-die attitude that nearly took England over the line in the series-deciding final ODI in Pune.

Curran belted an unbeaten 95 off 83, an innings that featured nine fours and three sixes. England finished on 322/9 but the left-hander’s heroics have led to comparisons with the legendary MS Dhoni with whom he shares the dressing room for his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

Dhoni was known for his finishing skills and is often counted among the best finishers of the game. And England stand-in captain Jos Buttler reckons Curran’s latest innings made him think of the former India captain.

“I’m sure Sam would want to talk to MS about tonight’s innings,” Buttler said after the match. “I’m sure there were shades of the way that he (Dhoni) would have liked to take the game down if he was in that situation. He’s a great person for Sam to have a conversation with when he meets up MS (in IPL).”

Not only Curran, another England allrounder Moeen Ali will also rub shoulders with Dhoni after being picked by CSK at the IPL auction in February this year and Buttler feels it’s a golden opportunity for them to learn from the two-time world cup winning captain.

“We know what an amazing cricketer, finisher MS Dhoni is. A brilliant learning curve for all our players to share dressing rooms with guys like MS’ stature in the game. I’m very excited for them,” Buttler said.

Speaking of England’s chase, Buttler said losing wickets regularly meant they failed to get a big partnership going but the target wasn’t daunting at any stage. “We were happy to chase that score. We thought that was a manageable score, but we lost wickets at regular intervals and never got those partnerships together. Never thought run-rate would be a big issue but we lost wickets,” Buttler said.

“Small, small things could have done better. I think with the ball we were not quite as disciplined as we have been early on. We gave them a few too many easy boundary balls. They didn’t have to work too hard for those boundaries, but then we pegged back pretty well with spinners picking up those wickets,” he added.

Showing signs of the ability that leads some commentators to suggest that he is a potential test match #6 and successor to Stokes.

Still needs another yard of pace but that will come as he fills out.

He has a very simple batting tecnnique almost like Washing ton Sundar's. Hits the ball in the arc with a vertical bat. His bowling is getting ineefective due to a lack of swing in most pitches. He will end up being like Stokes, a proper batsman who bowls 3rd change

Yes, I feel he buckled a bit at the end after playing a great innings.

Yes, I feel he buckled a bit at the end after playing a great innings.

Doesn't have the experience yet to finish games effectively. However he is a good player but someone England dot really need in LOI cricket. The have abundance of tallent and they mostly played and experimental side in last ODI series.

The like of woakes, Archer etc will make a com back and he wont be required.

That was more than a decent innings from someone with great future potential

If curran was pakistani a certain someone wouldve written him off Called his innings a fluke and derided him for the fact he couldnt win the game for his team

Massively impressed. I have seen Sam curran bat before but this was a revelation.
What is he doing batting so far down? Too bad that he couldn't finish. Those 23 runs of 3 overs was very gettable.

Disappointed with the finish: Sam Curran

PUNE: England all-rounder Sam Curran, who almost won the match and series for England with his unbeaten 95 (off 83 balls) said he was disappointed with the finish as his side lost the third and final
ODI by just seven runs.

"We didn't win the game, but happy with the way I played. I haven't done something like that for a while especially for England.

Disappointed with the finish. I had a few messages from the dug-out as well. [They said] try to bat deep and try to take most of the strike," said the left-hander after the match.

England were struggling at 168 for six when Curran walked in and soon his side found itself at 200 for seven. But the left-arm pace bowler, who was the difference between India and England in the Test series at home in 2018, looked to become the difference once again.

He took 18 runs off Shardul Thakur's last over to bring England back, spotting the slower deliveries of his Chennai Super Kings teammate Shardul Thakur who had picked four wickets and deceived the earlier English batsmen.

Needing 14 off the last over, Curran found left-arm pacer T Natarajan hard to score boundaries of. "Natarajan bowled really well in the end. He had six deliveries there and showed why he's a good bowler," added Curran.

Brilliant by Sam Curran 4/41 so far - albeit against a weak SL batting.

Sam Curran has taken more wickets today than what Tom Curran has managed in his last ten ODIs across the last two years.

Credit to IPL for bringing out the best from a lot of players and that includes Sam Curran too. His ability to deliver game changing performance is a consequence of playing with and against other big international superstars in a top notch platform like IPL.

Blessing in disguise

He was offering nothing to England

WaSam Akurran needs another yard of pace for tests. Capable of replacing Stokes as #6. But not currently good enough in either department.

Sensible.

Time for Curran to step up. He has the makings of a test match #6 and second change bowler.

Player of the Match, Sam Curran

The England all-rounder contributed 35 from 18 balls before dismissing David Miller for 12 in South Africa's run chase...

"Whenever I go out to bat, I like to have a batter's mindset. I had a lot of time to reflect when I was injured and it was an area of my game I wanted to be more consistent in but in this batting order, I am happy to chip in down the order. With the ball, I want to be adaptable and give Jos different options throughout the overs."

Gets the first 5fer for England in T20 internationals!

5-10 off 3.4 overs — wow.

England all-rounder Sam Curran re-wrote the record books with a brilliant five-wicket haul against Afghanistan in Perth on Saturday night and now looms as a pivotal member of Jos Buttler’s side as they attempt to win a second ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in Australia.

Curran showed his likening for Australian conditions when he ripped through Afghanistan’s brittle batting line-up and picked up the astonishing figures of 5/10 from 3.4 overs during England's easy victory.

It was the first T20I five-wicket haul by any England men's player and just the eighth time the feat had been achieved at a T20 World Cup and it all happened in what was the 24-year-old's first appearance at a T20 World Cup.

Curran missed out on last year's edition due to a stress fracture in his lower back, but is now a crucial member of the England squad given his ability to perform well during any stage of an innings.

But it’s his ability to find the right spot at the death that stood out against Afghanistan, with four of his five wickets coming in the final three overs of the innings when keeping the runs down is of upmost importance.

"I think anytime you play and you take on those tough situations, that's when you want to be involved," a modest Curran said after his five-wicket haul.

"Just trying to be as adaptable as possible, giving the bowling group loads of different options, and there will be some days where it doesn't come off, which I'm very, very aware of.

"Hopefully I can keep taking confidence, and all the other bowlers around me, we can all take confidence on that performance today, and we'll keep working hard for the rest of the tournament."

A month ago there were questions marks surrounding whether Curran was actually in England's best XI, but the all-rounder has proven in recent times just how valuable he is.

Curran picked up seven scalps during England's seven-match series in Pakistan to be the side's equal leading wicket taker and a pair of impressive performances with the ball against Australia prior to the T20 World Cup only strengthened his credentials.

"I am always trying to improve. Always just trying to get better each day,” Curran noted.

"I guess I feel having had a consistent run in the side has really given me confidence, as well, going into game by game, and like I said, it's a great bowling group to be a part of.

"We're all very different, and yeah, just really enjoying the atmosphere in the group.

The five-wicket triumph over Afghanistan provides England the perfect start to the tournament and another key fixture against tournament hosts Australia at the MCG looms at the end of this week.

But first of all is a clash against Ireland at the MCG on Wednesday, in what could be a tricky match-up to decipher given the form shown by England’s European neighbours during the First Round of the tournament.

Ireland sent the West Indies packing out of the tournament with a crushing nine-wicket triumph over the Caribbean side in Hobart on Friday and Curran expects them to a difficult team to defeat.

“Ireland is obviously going to be another very tricky game. We've seen the way they played in the qualifiers. They're obviously a very dangerous team; got some match winners in there, as well,” Curran said.

"We'll focus probably just on Wednesday's game, but...there's no hiding that Friday is going to be a pretty epic game against Australia at the MCG, which I'm sure will be an incredible experience for all of us, and hopefully we can go into that game having won on Wednesday."

I’d like to see him play more tests but I don’t think his bowling improve much so his batting will have to.

The opposition will always look to target him in the death overs. It's quite bewildering how well he has bowled in this wt20.
