At the height of Sanatan Dharma, the mightiest warriors and gurus through their years of devotion attained the powers to conjure celestial weapons of immeasurable strength. However such yugas are now gone and in the Kalyuga we humans have become weak, greedy, dishonest and hence not even the best of us have the same abilities anymore.
However, to lose access to such substantial power is not just a loss to Sanatanis but the world itself as in the right hands such cosmic weapons could help protect earth from unfriendly
interstellar powers or during our own voyages in the future.
At the peak of their scientific advancements even the Nazis, Americans, Russians read Hindu scriptures to unravel the mystery of the cosmic weapons. This is what ultimately lead to the vision and creation of the atomic bomb as admitted by its developer Oppenheimer in his famous speech where he quotes Bhagwad Geeta - “ Now i have become death, the destroyer of worlds.”
In Hindu mythology, celestial weapons, known as Astras, were divine, powerful weapons wielded by gods, demigods, and legendary heroes. Each weapon is associated with a deity and often carries immense destructive power. Here are some of the greatest celestial weapons in Hinduism:
1. Brahmastra
- Associated Deity: Brahma
- Description: The Brahmastra is one of the most powerful weapons, capable of destroying entire civilizations. It is said to never fail and is often used as a last resort due to its devastating effects.
2. Pashupatastra
- Associated Deity: Shiva
- Description: This is Shiva’s most powerful weapon and is capable of destroying the entire universe. It can be used in various ways—through the mind, eyes, words, or a bow.
3. Vajra
- Associated Deity: Indra
- Description: The Vajra, made from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, is a thunderbolt weapon wielded by Indra, the king of gods. It is known for its ability to strike with immense force, symbolizing both indestructibility and power.
4. Sudarshana Chakra
- Associated Deity: Vishnu
- Description: This divine spinning disk, wielded by Vishnu, is known for its ability to slice through anything. It always returns to its owner after being thrown and is considered a symbol of dharma.
5. Trishula
- Associated Deity: Shiva
- Description: Shiva’s trident represents the three fundamental aspects of existence: creation, preservation, and destruction. It is a powerful weapon that can obliterate evil forces.
6. Narayanastra
- Associated Deity: Vishnu
- Description: This weapon fires a volley of millions of missiles at the enemy. The more the opponent resists, the stronger the weapon’s power grows. It can only be stopped by complete surrender.
7. Agneyastra
- Associated Deity: Agni (the god of fire)
- Description: This weapon releases a torrent of fire, engulfing everything in its path. It is capable of burning entire armies and cities.
8. Varunastra
- Associated Deity: Varuna (the god of water)
- Description: This water-based weapon can release massive floods, capable of drowning enemies and submerging landscapes.
9. Brahmashira
- Associated Deity: Brahma
- Description: A more powerful version of the Brahmastra, the Brahmashira is said to be four times more potent. It can destroy entire planets and was used only in extreme cases.
10. Shakti
- Associated Deity: Durga
- Description: Shakti is a spear-like weapon often associated with goddess Durga. It is known for its unstoppable power and was used by legendary warriors like Karna.
These celestial weapons are not just tools of war; they often symbolize deeper aspects of divine power, dharma (righteousness), and cosmic order.
