ISLAMABAD: The government has introduced significant changes to the rules controlling citizens’ exit from the country in an attempt to end the practice of keeping people on the no-fly list for years and even for over a decade.

In his first press conference on Friday after assuming charge as the interior minister, Rana Sanaullah said a person’s name put on the ECL would automatically be removed after 120 days. However, the duration can be extended for another 90 days if there is concrete evidence.

Besides, people involved in Ponzi schemes and cheating the public at large involving hundreds of affectees can also be placed on the ECL from now on.

The facility of automatic omission from ECL will not apply to cases of terrorism, heinous crimes and threat to national security, cases forwarded by registrars of the Supreme Court, high courts and banking courts, drug trafficking, Ponzi schemes and cheating public at large.

The changes have been made to Rule 2 of Exit from Pakistan (Control) Rules, which define grounds to prohibit a person from going abroad.

A new rule (4-A) has been added under which a representation seeking review will be decided within 30 days.

The interior minister said the federal cabinet has already approved amendments to the ECL rules.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, soon after taking office, paid attention to the grave issue and set up a committee to come up with the amendments to the ECL rules within three days.

A committee comprising Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Azam Nazir Tarar, Syed Naveed Qamar and Maulana Asad Mehmood completed the task within the stipulated time, he added.

Rana Sanaullah said that in the past, people were put unnecessarily on the ECL, and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was also used to victimise political opponents.

The minister said that currently names of 4,863 people were on the ECL and the amendments would benefit around 3,000 of them.

He said that initially the name of a person could be put on the ECL for 120 days. However, the duration could be extended for 90 days if there are solid grounds.

The ECL rules were amended on merit and would be for all the citizens, he said.

Moreover, the black list, which currently had names of over 30,000 people, would also be reviewed, the minister said, expressing hope that the task would be done within weeks. He said that on the directives of PM Sharif, fool-proof security was being provided to former prime minister Imran Khan. “The security, as approved by the former PM’s principal secretary Azam Khan, is being provided to Imran Khan,” he said.

Mr Sanaullah said the former premier had written to the government seeking fool-proof security in the wake of threats to his life.

Replying to a question, he said no case would be registered against anyone on political grounds. A case would be filed only after a thorough inquiry and based on solid evidence, he added.

To another question, he said a detailed discussion was held in the meeting of the National Security Committee on a telegram received from the Pakistan embassy in Washington, and no evidence of any conspiracy was found in it.

As per details, the names of more than 100 political personalities including PM Shehbaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Faryal Talpur, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Saad Rafique, Khawaja Asif and others have been removed from the ECL.

Unmute
The names were placed on the ECL on the recommendations of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Sources said that the names which were placed on ECL on the orders of courts and security institute will not be removed from the list.

Sources said that the names which were placed for 4 months on the ECL will be removed from the list.

Earlier, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led coalition government decided to stop unnecessary use of the Exit Control List (ECL).

The Exit Control List (ECL) committee formed during the first cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday has recommended amending the rules.

As per new rules, people would be placed at the ECL only when it is necessary. The committee had also recommended fixing the time period for the pleas seeking removal of the names from the ECL.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said Tuesday the government did not have a first information report (FIR) registered against PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

The interior minister's comments came after around 150 people, including former prime minister Khan, were named in a case relating to hooliganism at Masjid-e-Nabawi last week.

The case was registered against the suspects at the Madina Town Police Station in Faisalabad on the complaint of a citizen named Muhammad Naeem.

On Monday, the Islamabad High Court restrained government authorities from taking any further action against the PTI leadership in the Masjid-e-Nabawi sanctity violation case.

However, in his press conference today, the interior minister said he supported the reasoning of taking action against people if they hurt the religious sentiments of others.

Sanaullah warned that similar complaints were recorded at different police stations across the country, and the police were investigating the cases.

Chiding the PTI leadership, the interior minister said the party had issued "fatwas" against the PML-N, which resulted in the interior minister and now planning minister Ahsan Iqbal getting shot in 2018.

"They [the PTI] were happy at that time and labelled these incidents as good," the interior minister said, noting that now, when the tables had turned, they were upset over it.

Sanaullah asks PTI to condemn Masjid-e-Nabawi incident

Sanaullah asked the PTI leadership to condemn the hooliganism that took place when alleged party supporters had hurled abuses and engaged in physical attacks on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's delegation at the Masjid-e-Nabawi last week.

He claimed that MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafique — the nephew of former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed — had taken people from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia for the hooliganism, while Sahibzada Jahangir was also involved in it.

Khan had last week termed the hooliganism incident as a "public reaction" and said it was a "consequence" of the government's deeds.

Election in 12-14 months: Rana Sanaullah
Moving on, the interior minister said Pakistan was facing tough times as an "incompetent group" had left the economy in a shambles. "An anarchist was leading the country [before us]".

Sanaullah slammed the PTI for holding rallies across the country on the call of their party chairman and claimed that never in the history of the sub-continent had people held rallies on the eve of Eidul Fitr.

The interior minister added that due to PTI's attitude toward other parties, their allies had parted ways with them. He said an election would take place in the next 12-14 months.

ISLAMABAD: PTI leader Shireen Mazari has written a letter to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on the government’s decision to appoint Rana Sanaullah as the interior minister.

Mazari, who was the human rights minister in the last government, has claimed that the Shehbaz Sharif-led government has appointed an “ally of terrorist groups” and an alleged killer as the interior minister.

The PTI leader has also claimed that Sanaullah, who is an “accused” in the Model Town case, is using the “religion card” against his political rivals.

State Minister for Petroleum Dr Musadik Malik, while commenting on the issue, said that Mazari had not written a letter but has sent an “appeal” to the UN to “save” the PTI.

“US is conspiring and a request has been sent to the United Nations. Wow, what a conspiracy,” said the minister. He also questioned on what basis the PTI leaders were “appealing” to the UN.

PM Shehbaz Sharif was sworn in last month after Imran Khan was removed from office via a no-confidence motion.

Following his oath, PM Shehbaz had inducted 33 people in his cabinet, among them was Rana Sanaullah.

After Sanaullah had taken oath, he was made the minister for interior.

Since his elevation to the office the PTI has claimed that the incumbent government would launch a campaign against them. However, PML-N, which is leading the coalition government, has denied that it would do so.

Watch it.

ISLAMABAD: Former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Thursday vowed to file a reference in the Supreme Court against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah for his alleged involvement in “criminal activities, including murders”.

Talking to journalists, Mr Ahmed said that in a video clip, a former Station House Officer, who mostly served in Faisalabad, the hometown of the interior minister, had accused Mr Sanaullah of having been involved in the murder of his friend. The SHO said Mr Sanaullah had also tried to kill him.

“I will present the SHO’s video statement before the Supreme Court,” Sheikh Rashid said.

Mr Ahmed said that a leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Abid Sher Ali, and his father had also previously claimed that Mr Sanaullah was involved in the targeted killing of at least 18 people.

Mr Ahmed, who is president of Awami Muslim League (AML), said he wanted to offer court arrest during the PTI’s forthcoming public meeting in Faisalabad on May 15, but PTI Chairman Imran Khan had stopped him from doing so.

The former minister did not elaborate as to why he wanted himself to be arrested.

The AML leader said Mr Sanaullah was also involved in the illicit drug business in Faisalabad.

In reply to a question, Mr Ahmed claimed that Imran Khan had become more popular since his ouster from the government.

He said the PTI had planned several public meetings in different parts of the country and the main rally would be held in Islamabad at the end of May.

He said PML-N-led coalition government could collapse anytime if its allied parties decided to leave the government.

Mr Ahmed said he was trying to remove “misunderstanding” between Imran Khan and the establishment.

About the arrest of his nephew, Rashid Shafique, on charges of provoking the people in Madina against PM Shehbaz Sharif’s delegation, Mr Ahmed asserted that Mr Shafique had not been involved in the incident, as he was not present at the holy mosque of Madina when the incident took place.

Soon after the incident, Mr Shafique released a video statement from the mosque that went viral. In that video, he elaborated what happened to some federal ministers when they had been taunted and thrashed by an unruly crowd.

“When Saudi authorities allowed my nephew to fly to Pakistan after finding him innocent, he was arrested when he had arrived in Pakistan,” he added.

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has ordered a crackdown against netizens spreading obscene videos on social media to defame people and said that they would be arrested after being identified.

In a statement, Rana Sanaullah said that he has been directed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif not to tolerate such content. “We will not allow anyone to defame people through social media,” the interior minister said, adding that it is important to stop such acts that are being used for blackmailing.

He further shared that FIA and other concerned institutions have been directed to take action against those sharing obscene videos and photos on social media.

Earlier in the day, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took notice of fake videos being spread on social media and announced that it had launched a probe into it.

The FIA warned that it would take strict action against all those involved in sharing such content and asked netizens to refrain from becoming part of any such campaign.

It is pertinent to mention here that former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Fawad Chaudhry claimed on Monday that a campaign for character assassination of the former prime minister Imran Khan is about to be launched through fake videos and audios.

In a video message on social networking site Twitter, Fawad Chaudhry said that the imported government tried to use blasphemy cases against political opponents.

He said that the government will also start a major campaign for character assassination of Imran Khan, adding that these are the last weeks of the dummy government and the real freedom movement is not going to stop because of these issues.

Drugs case

Earlier in the day, the court resumed hearing the drug case filed against the interior minister by the ANF.

At the outset of the hearing, the prosecutor said that possessing drugs was illegal and that the case challan had been prepared. "We have the chemical examination report, 15 witnesses and forensic evidence against the accused persons. They should now be indicted," he demanded.

Meanwhile, Sanaullah's lawyer, Syed Farhad Ali Shah, submitted an application requesting that his client be granted permanent exemption from appearing in the court as he had several engagements after assuming responsibilities as a federal minister.

Subsequently, the court issued a notice to the ANF and sought further arguments from the lawyers of the three co-accused. The hearing was later adjourned till May 21.

On July 1, 2019, Sanaullah was arrested by the ANF Lahore team while he was travelling from Faisalabad to Lahore near the Ravi Toll Plaza on the motorway, claiming to have seized 15kg of heroin from his vehicle. A special team of the force had also arrested five others, including the driver and security guards of the PML-N leader.

The FIR was lodged under Section 9(C) of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act 1997, which carries death penalty or life imprisonment or a jail term that may extend to 14 years, along with a fine up to Rs1 million.

Mass murderer and drug dealer , fits well for Interior minister's job and, part of a cabinet with majority being the convict criminals on bail.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the drug case, filed against him by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) during PTI’s government, was nothing but a tactic to subject him to “political victimisation”.

The federal minister in a statement on Sunday charged that former prime minister Imran Khan and his adviser on interior and accountability Shahzad Akbar worked "hand-in-glove" with the authorities to open a case drug case against him.Sanaullah was reacting to his predecessor Sheikh Rashid’s address at PTI’s Abbottabad rally where the latter had blasted him for being a “murderer” and a “drug dealer”.

“The ANF has produced 15 witnesses and forensic evidence [before the court] against this man,” Rashid told the public gathering.Hitting back at the ANP leader, Sanaullah claimed he had been tipped off by a police officer in Islamabad who was approached by Shahzad Akbar to register a case against him.

“The PTI government pushed ANF to launch the same case against me after officer refused,” he added.

Federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Monday asked Punjab Governor Omer Sarfraz Cheema to resign respectfully and warned him as well as President Arif Alvi against taking any "adverse step".

"A governor of a few hours should go home willingly and not cause disrespect for himself," the minister said in a statement, Express News reported.

He warned the governor as well as the president to not do anything to be scorned by the history and the people.

Sanaullah, stalwart of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), also reminded President Alvi that he is bound to accept the advice put forth by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

"To not do so would be unconstitutional," he said, adding, "They should follow the Constitution and the directives of the Supreme Court and avoid a step that violates them."

According to the interior minister, the top court has ruled that President Alvi doesn't have any 'inherent' or 'residual' powers.

He observed that in a parliamentary democracy, the role of president is symbolic and he does not have veto powers.

Sanaullah went on to say that the president should not become a "slave to the PTI secretariat" and Imran Khan but should instead follow the path of the Constitution.

Concluding, he said that Omer Cheema, before leaving the office, should refrain from resorting to an act of malice. "Those who take a path contrary to the Constitution will have to be ready to face the wrath of the Constitution, courts and the masses."

Earlier this month, the premier sent a second summary to President Alvi for the removal of the Punjab governor. According to sources, legally, 10 days after the summary is sent, Cheema would automatically be dismissed from his post.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has lashed out at former prime minister Imran Khan and his predecessor Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, warning both the “devils against mischievous actions”.

In a statement on Sunday, Sanaullah called PTI Chairman Imran a “Double Shah” of Pakistan’s politics who he said doubled his wealth through plundering the people of the country.

“While his peon [Rashid] following in the footsteps of his boss [Imran] also amassed ill-gotten wealth,” he added.

Sanaullah said both Rashid and Imran are fooling the masses by spreading lies.

A day earlier, the PTI chief dropped a bombshell, claiming an “assassination attempt” was being hatched against him – video evidence of which was kept in a “secure place”.

The former prime minister, who is poised to take the great leap to the federal capital, made the startling claims while addressing a charged public gathering in Sialkot on Saturday.

In what was a prelude to his ‘Azadi March’ as the country braces for another acrimonious chapter in the political landscape, Imran told his supporters a plot was being orchestrated against his life, saying: “I have named all those elements involved in the conspiracy in the video. I knew about it and I got full knowledge of it a few days ago.”

Separately, Sanaullah said the PML-N government would put the country back on track and improve the current economic situation with the help of allied parties.

Talking to a private news channel, the minister expressed regret over “incompetent coterie” of the previous government which destroyed the economy badly.

Responding to a question about his party plans to contest joint elections with allied parties or would they field their own candidates, Sanaullah said that no such decision has been made by the party leadership yet.

ISLAMABAD: Indirectly referring to the suo motu notice related to "perceived interference" by "persons in authority" in the investigation and prosecution of criminal matters against government officials, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Saturday said that the government's "hands and feet were being tied."

Speaking on Geo News programme "Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath", Sanaullah said problems are being created for them amid talks with the IMF, then those who are interested in the matter of transfers and postings should decide.

“But if our hands and feet are tied, then the responsibility will fall upon those who imposed that group [PTI] on the nation,” he added.

Responding to another question, Sanaullah said that the country’s economic situation could be improved if the IMF doubles its loan for Pakistan and the friendly countries extend financial support to Islamabad.

He added that the government was ready to complete its constitutional term and overhaul the fragile economy.

The interior minister said that the government’s delegations will negotiate with the IMF’s team on May 24 and 25, adding that the situation will be cleared about the economy after the talks with the IMF.

'Talks with IMF going forward in a positive manner'

A day earlier, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Minister Miftah Ismail had said the much-anticipated talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were going forward in a "positive" manner, hoping that the economic situation in the country would improve soon.

Taking to his Twitter handle, the finance minister wrote: “With positive IMF talks underway, we expect a turnaround in the economic situation very soon.”

Miftah also shared the current account data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) last night, terming the decline a “good sign for external stability”.

“The current account deficit for April came in at $623 million, less than half the average for the first [nine] months of the fiscal year. This is a very good sign for external stability,” he wrote.

Imran could be detained, says Sana

LAHORE:
Federal Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah on Saturday said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s politics would be ended if he was sent to jail even for three days.

Talking to the media at Model Town, he wished that Imran Khan should be detained in the same jail cell where he (Rana Sanaullah) was detained, and said that such decisions could not be made without the consultation with allies as it was a coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sanaullah said that Imran Khan may be arrested if the coalition government would decide to do so, adding that national institutions should stand with Pakistan.

Sanaullah warns PTI of action if marchers head to Islamabad with 'intent to cause anarchy'

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Sunday warned the PTI of action if its protesters were to march towards Islamabad with the "intent to cause anarchy", but also said that the final decision in this regard will be taken jointly with the help of coalition partners.

Addressing a press conference in Bahawalpur, Sanaullah said the government and its allies were mandated to decide about the line of action against the PTI's planned long march to Islamabad.

"I don't know what decision the leaders of the coalition government will take, but if they decide [to go for] action, then we will not allow protesters to even come out of their homes," the minister told media representatives.

The interior minister was dismissive of the PTI's march, saying that it would not be much of a bother for the government.

He lashed out at former prime minister Imran Khan for asking his supporters to dub his rivals "thieves and traitors", accusing him of proliferating "shamelessness and obscenity" in the country.

He also accused Imran of misleading youth for the sake of gaining political mileage.

"Thirty years ago, Hakim Sayed had written in his book that a lobby is preparing Imran Khan and he will destroy Pakistan in future," the PML-N leader claimed.

Sanaullah also commented on the arrest of PTI leader Shireen Mazari on Saturday, saying that if her arrest was "inappropriate" then the arrest of Maryam Nawaz in front of her father should also not have taken place.

He also questioned the effectiveness of the cybercrime law in the country. " A person arrested under the law gets a bail within an hour. Attempts were made to make it stronger, but all such endeavours were based on dishonesty."

He suggested that the government, opposition and media should decide the matter in a way that it does not gag freedom of speech but also prevents the misuse of the law.

Later in another media interaction, the minister said the PML-N will hold a rally in Bahawalpur on May 28, which, according to him, will "shatter all records of PTI rallies".

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Monday warned former prime minister Imran Khan against creating a law and order problem in the federal capital during the planned long march, saying the law will take its course against those doing so.

"Law will take its course against Imran Niazi if he attempts to be the gravedigger of democracy during the march," Sanaullah said.

Mocking the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, the federal minister said he who destroyed the country's economy is now taking to the streets to put a halt to its recovery, Express News reported.

Sanaullah, who is also a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N, vowed to not let such "efforts" succeed, saying that no mob acts or hooliganism would be tolerated during the planned political activity.

"Imran Niazi is a liar, and chaos and unrest are embedded in him and in what he says," the interior minister said. "No one trusts U-turn Niazi anymore."

A day earlier, deposed premier Imran Khan announced that his party would kick off its much-hyped long march against the “imported government” to the federal capital on May 25.

Addressing a presser, he had listed immediate dissolution of assemblies and announcement of a date for the next general election as the main demands of his party.

The PTI chief was ousted from power last month by Parliament following a no-trust voting against him. Ever since his ouster, Imran claims that the voting was a result of a foreign plot hatched against him for pursuing an independent foreign policy.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday said the Punjab police arrested at least 1,700 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in “4,414 raids across the province” in a bid to scuttle the ‘bloody’ long march by the former ruling party.

The minister made these remarks while addressing a press conference alongside Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in Islamabad.

According to Sanaullah, the police were told by the government not to adopt an “aggressive stance” during the raids. It may be noted here that the police had come under intense criticism following a spate of raids on the houses of PTI leaders.

Sana told journalists that at least 1700 arrests were made during these raids. “Out of these 1700, 250 people signed affidavits that they were not part of this ‘fitna’ and were allowed to go home while the rest of them had been detained under MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) 16,” the minister added.

In response to a question, Rana Sana said if arrests made by the Sindh police were added to the number of detention in Punjab then the number could have been “1720 or 1724”.

In his presser, Sana claimed that people refused to join the ‘anarchic’ protest of the PTI and chose to stay at home. He claimed out of 200 million residents of Lahore, only “250-300 came out to express their support for the former ruling party”.

He said the public wanted to see Pakistan grow in a democratic way instead of becoming part of a plan to derail its progress.

Speaking about the protesters coming from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa led by Imran Khan, the interior minister, in a sarcastic tone, said that the government was ready to extend its ‘welcome’ to them.

He said a strategy had already been in place to ‘thin marchers out’ before reaching Islamabad.

Speaking about the hearing of a petition in the Supreme Court, the minister said the SC was the “supreme protector” of the Constitution of Pakistan. He added that the government would comply with the order of the top court as per the instructions of the prime minister. “It is our responsibility and legal and constitutional duty as well,” he added.

According to Sana, the three-member bench had proposed a negotiation team to break the impasse over the protest. He added that the four-member team of the PTI was being led by Babar Awan whereas the prime minister would have announced the government team by this time as well.

He said if anyone was willing to talk then the government would negotiate but it would not let anyone take the law into their own hands. “We have not stopped anyone from exercising their constitutional rights,” Sana said, adding that violence, however, would not be tolerated. He added that the government had allowed Imran to hold at least “33 political gatherings” since the ouster of his government in April this year.

The minister also requested the court to keep the events of the 2014 sit-in, such as the attack on the PTV building and broken promises by Imran regarding the protest venue, in mind while taking its decision on the petition filed by the PTI.

Furthermore, the minister reiterated that no agreement had been reached with the PTI over the sit-in, however.

Rana Sanaullah to be indicted in drugs case on June 25

LAHORE:
A special narcotics court fixed on Tuesday June 25 as the date to frame charges on federal interior minister Rana Sanaullah in the drugs peddling case, registered against him by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF).

The judge of the Special Court for Control of Narcotics Substances (CNS) also directed the concerned quarters to submit replies on Sanaullah’s plea seeking his bank accounts and properties to be unfrozen.

During the proceedings, the court asked the counsel whether the accused were prepared as the court intended to frame charges against them.

The defense counsel argued for the charges to be framed on the next date of hearing as the interior minister would have to travel from Islamabad to reach Lahore.

The prosecution initially resisted the plea, but later agreed to the court passing an appropriate order.

Earlier, the interior minister, also the Punjab president for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), had filed a plea seeking directions to the authorities concerned for unfreezing his four back accounts frozen by the ANF on May 17.

The application had contended that the petitioner was being subjected to political victimisation as he had been raising his voice on several issues.

He maintained that he had been appearing before the ANF and any other forums where his appearance was required but his accounts had been frozen without any logic. He further argued that he had been granted bail by the Lahore High Court and had been appearing before the trial court.

He also informed the court that the freezing of his bank accounts had disturbed his life, requesting the court to issue directives to the quarters concerned to restore his bank accounts.

Case details

On July 1, 2019, Sanaullah was arrested by the ANF Lahore team while he was travelling from Faisalabad to Lahore near the Ravi Toll Plaza on the motorway, claiming to have seized 15kg of heroin from his vehicle. A special team of the force had also arrested five others, including the driver and security guards of the PML-N leader.

According to the FIR registered by the ANF deputy director operations - under sections 186,189 and 353 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), while sections 15, 17 of 9C of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act (CNSA) 1997 - the ANF had received information that Rana Sanaullah was involved in drug smuggling and now was now taking heroin to Lahore.

It is pertinent to note that Section 9(C) of the CNSA 1997 carries death penalty or life imprisonment or a jail term that may extend to 14 years, along with a fine of up to Rs1 million.

For a start this case will go nowhere because a corrupt system allows these thugs to dictate terms and as we saw with the SS and ***** laudering cases, they threaten people and the SC sits by and just talks the talk but no real action. But we now have everyone at the top in govt facing very serious charges that could lead to long prison sentences. Just imagine if IK did even 0.001 of what these mafia guys are and have done.

This guy is a great politician contrary to what people think. He is adored in his hometown Faisalabad because he visits common people's houses and asks them about the issues they are facing and what they think needs fixing.

This is exactly how a politician should be like.

Where is the cheap gesture now

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday warned the PTI against announcing another long march, giving a strong indication that its workers and supporters will not be allowed to enter Islamabad again.

In a tweet, hours after a cabinet meeting, he said that in case the PTI were to embark on another march, "I’ll see how they cross the barriers this time."

Sanaullah's warning came after the PTI staged its "Haqeeqi Azadi March" last week when its supporters dislodged containers placed to impede their advances and braved tear-gas shelling to somehow reach the D-Chowk in the capital, only to see party chairman Imran Khan call off plans to convert the march into a sit-in.

The PTI lashed out at the interior minister's message, saying he was "threatening peaceful protesters". It said the nation would always exhibit its bravery and would not be stopped by "slaves".

Earlier in the day while addressing a press conference in Islamabad after the cabinet meeting, the interior minister came down hard on the PTI. State resources were used to further the political agenda of Imran Khan, he alleged, adding that armed police officials from KP were illegally added to the army of the "criminal gang".

He went on to say that in order to further the "criminal political agenda", polarise the nation and mislead the youth, this armed gang attacked the centre and headed towards Islamabad.

"When they were stopped at Attock, Mianwali and within Islamabad city limits, they opened fire at police officials," he said, adding that the protesters also removed obstacles placed to deter them.

The minister went on to say that the party misled the Supreme Court and obtained a favourable order, which allowed them to stage a protest at Islamabad's H-9 park.

"[The order] was implemented and we made arrangement for them to stage the protest but then that was not their objective. Their objective was not to carry out any political activity. Their objective was to enter Islamabad and spread chaos and anarchy. Their objective was to seize the capital city and make the government dysfunctional," he said.

He alleged that all the protesters that gathered at D-Chowk belonged to "the same province" and had arrived in Islamabad a day before.

"We have marked all the buildings and hotels [where they stayed], we are noting in our report the details of where these people came from and where they stayed," he said, adding that some also stayed at Parliament Lodges and KP House.

Sana claimed that police had only used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters, asserting that they did not fire a single shot.

The minister said that he had proposed to the federal cabinet that permission be given for cases against PTI leaders.

He said the federal government would have to grant permission for this as it was the competent authority, adding that the cabinet had proposed a sub-committee to analyse the facts.

"If my stance has any weight, then the committee will inform the cabinet of its decision," he said, reiterating that there was evidence to support the PTI's true intentions. "I am hopeful that the case will be registered and this group will be prosecuted."

Committee to deal with anti-state activities
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday constituted a five-member committee to chalk out a plan of action to deal with anti-state activities as the federal cabinet expressed concerns over recent statements by PTI leaders regarding the party's Azadi March.

Sanaullah and Adviser on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira are among the members of the committee.

During the meeting, the cabinet expressed grave concerns over the recent statement of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan. A day earlier, Khan had said that he would use the full force of KP when PTI chief Imran Khan gives the next call for protest.

The meeting also took notice of Imran’s remarks in the buildup to his party's recent march as well as his admission that some of the protestors were armed.

Future anti-state marches to be dealt with 'iron hand'
The federal cabinet was assured that any anti-state long march in the future would be dealt with an iron hand. The interior minister also informed the meeting's participants that the PTI's Azadi March was an "anti-state conspiracy" and not a political activity.

He alleged that it was an "armed attack on the state" under the guise of political activity, and claimed that no law enforcement official was carrying a weapon at the site of the march.

PM Shehbaz said that he had also directed the interior ministry and law enforcement agencies to not carry weapons at the march venue.

The cabinet felicitated the nation on "rejecting" Imran's Azadi March and lauded law enforcement agencies for "performing their duties efficiently".

During the meeting, it was highlighted that the PTI utilised the resources of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government by assembling armed groups at KP House a day before the march, while the Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister attacked police personnel.

Won’t Allow Riot March To Enter Islamabad Under Any Circumstances: Rana Sanaullah

Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday that the riot march will not be allowed to enter Islamabad under any circumstances as the country cannot be left at the mercy of riot groups and miscreants.

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Interior Minister regarding enhancement of operational capacity of Islamabad Police and Frontier Constabulary. Home Secretary Yousuf Naseem Khokhar along with Commandant Frontier Constabulary Salahuddin Mehsud, IG Police Islamabad, Chief Commissioner Islamabad and others participated in the meeting.

Rana Sanaullah said that for maintaining law and order, it has been decided to provide more financial, technical resources and legal support to Islamabad Police and Frontier Constabulary while salaries and allowances of police will be made equal to those of Punjab Police.

He said the government has decided to immediately pay the arrears of Rs 1 billion of the Police Martyrs Package while the Frontier Constabulary will also be provided necessary training to use it as an anti-riot force.

He went on to say that for the foolproof security of the federal capital the government intends to modernize Islamabad Safe City in the style of Lahore, and to ensure law and order as well as street crime the coverage of cameras in Islamabad are being increased to 100 percent.

Court orders police to lodge case against Rana Sana, senior Lahore police officers

LAHORE: A sessions court on Wednesday ordered Station House Officer (SHO) Bhati Gate to lodge an first information report (FIR) against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, the Capital City Police officer, DIG operations and six other police officials for allegedly assaulting and torturing lawyers to prevent them from participating in the long march of the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf on May 25.

An additional sessions judge Mian Mudassar Umar Bodla issued this order on the petition of advocate Haider Majeed, who contended that the Lahore police on the direction of Rana Sanaullah made the assault, tortured, humiliated and damaged their vehicle when they were heading towards Islamabad to participate in the PTI long march.

In its written order, the judge maintained that criminal procedure code empowers the police to use force to avoid a disturbance of the peace or to disperse an assembly which threatens such peace but exercise of this power is not unbridled. It is subject to the condition imposed by Article 14 & 16 of the Constitution as well as Article 6 &7 of international covenant on civil and political rights and Article 3 of universal declaration of human rights.

The object of use of force is to quell a disturbance. The judge further said the Lahore High Court had in a case had also held that the use of force is to be exercised as a preventive measure and not for launching an attack.

In the instant case the lawyers were boarding their vehicles but the police stopped them and they came out of the vehicle peacefully. Despite the fact they were cooperating with police, they were baton charged, humiliated, disgraced and their vehicles were badly damaged by policemen. The video of the occurrence was played in the courtroom which showed that it was not lawful use of force but vandalism.

It is required by law that the justice of peace should act judiciously. Therefore, SHO Bhati gate is directed to lodge FIR against Rana Sanaullah and others under Section 352 (assault or use of criminal force) PPC, 427 (mischief causing damage) PPC and other provisions of police order. SHO was further directed to proceed strictly in accordance with law after lodging the FIR, the order concluded.

ISLAMABAD:
Federal Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan on Wednesday said that the country could not be left at the mercy of “riotous groups and mischievous elements” without naming any political party.

"Any riots and chaos would not be allowed to take place in the capital under any circumstances," he said while chairing a meeting with regards to enhancing the operational capacity of Islamabad Police and Frontier Constabulary in Islamabad.

"Riot March and evil elements would be dealt as per law," the interior minister warned, in an apparent reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) upcoming but not finalised long march to Islamabad.

He added that the federal cabinet strongly condemned the rioters’ violent attacks at police, Rangers and FC personnel.

Sanaullah said that the cabinet paid rich tributes to the police, Rangers and FC personnel for handling riots in a professional manner and for ensuring law and order.

The minister said it was decided to provide more financial, technical resources and legal support to Islamabad Police and FC for maintaining law and order, he was quoted as saying in a statement.

Rana Sanaullah, on the occasion, announced that salaries, allowances and ‘Shuhada Package’ of Islamabad Police and FC would be made at par with Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Police in next financial year.

Interior Secretary Yousuf Naseem Khokhar and Commandant FC Salahuddin Mehsud, IG Police Islamabad Dr Akbar Nasir, Chief Commissioner Islamabad Amir Ahmad Ali and other senior officials also attended the meeting.

It was also decided to pay Rs1 billion arrears of Shuhada Package to Islamabad Police immediately and to provide necessary anti-riot training to FC for being used as anti-riot force.

The meeting also decided to ensure 100 per cent coverage of all security cameras installed under Safe City Project for maintaining law and order and eliminate street crimes.

Earlier today, former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan backtracked from the six-day ultimatum he had given to the unity government for the announcement of the fresh elections.

After reaching Islamabad on May 25, Khan had surprised many by announcing to call off the much-hyped long march to the capital. However, he had given a six-day deadline to the government for announcing the election date — an ultimatum which expired on Tuesday.

A sessions court in Lahore on Wednesday directed authorities concerned to register a case against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah for allegedly torturing lawyers in the federal capital on May 25 — the day of the PTI's "Azadi March".

Additional Sessions Judge Mian Mudassar Umar Bodla gave the verdict after hearing all the arguments of the parties' lawyers.

Dawn.com reported that the order was on the petition filed by the Advocate Haider Majeed, who also accused the police of not registering a case as sought.

Barrister Hassan Niazi and other lawyers represented the petitioner, while a video of the incident was also played in the courtroom.

According to the court order, the petitioner and his colleagues were boarding their vehicle when they were pulled over by the police.

It went on to say that the petitioners were "baton-charged, humiliated, disgraced and their vehicle was damaged badly" even though they were cooperating with law enforcers, the publication reported.

It mentioned that the court subsequently asked the petitioner to approach the relevant SHO with a copy of the court order to proceed with the matter.

Last week, PTI Chairman Imran Khan took to his Twitter handle to share videos of alleged police brutality and termed it “condemnable and unacceptable”.

Imran had posted on Twitter a video montage of the alleged police brutality and termed it "condemnable and unacceptable".

“Flouting the Constitution [and] SC orders, this criminal imported government unleashed police brutality on our peaceful Azadi March protestors,”

He had also said that the party would be petitioning high courts to seek registration of cases against those responsible for using force against his party workers during their march.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah's indictment in a drugs case was delayed on Saturday as he failed to appear before a special court for the control of narcotic substances in Lahore, owing to the ongoing budget session in Islamabad. The court has now summoned him on July 23.

Sanaullah was arrested in the case in July 2019 under the previous government by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) which claimed to have recovered 15kg of heroin from his vehicle.

At the last hearing, the court had stated that charges against the interior minister would be framed on June 25 (today).

However, Sanauallah did not attend the hearing today, with his lawyers stating that the interior minister was busy with the annual budget session in the National Assembly.

The court, therefore, gave a day's exemption to Sanaullah from attending the hearing and summoned him at the next one on July 23.

Other suspects in the case were present at today's hearing.

Charges against Sanaullah

Sanaullah was arrested on July 1, 2019 by the ANF Lahore team while he was travelling from Faisalabad to Lahore near the Ravi Toll Plaza on the motorway. He was accused of carrying 15kg of heroin in his vehicle. Five others, including the driver and security guards of the PML-N leader, were also arrested.

A first information report was lodged under Section 9(C) of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act 1997, which carries death penalty or life imprisonment or a jail term that may extend to 14 years, along with a fine up to Rs1 million.

He was twice denied bail by the trial court but the Lahore High Court released him on December 24, 2019.

'Imran Khan behind drugs case against me'

Meanwhile, responding to Imran's video speech last night, Sanaullah said that the PTI chief "should be ashamed of himself" for making claims that he was being harassed and isolated.

"Have you not been doing this with your opponents for 3.5 years? No such thing is being done with you," he said. "Is asking you about your assets and corruption harassing you?"

In a message yesterday, Imran had threatened to "reveal everything" about the characters involved in the alleged conspiracy to oust his government if harassment of him and his party did not cease. "If we are pushed against the wall and harassed then I will be forced to speak up and will lay bare everything before the nation about what happened," he said.

In a rebuttal today, the interior minister stated that if the former premier had to reveal everything then he should tell the public about the "real reasons and factors" behind the 2014 sit-in.

"Tell them how you falsely implicated me in the drugs case. I was locked up in jail for 15 months ...

"The reality is that the case against me was made by Imran Khan himself and Shahzad Akbar proved to be instrumental in this," he alleged, demanding that the Supreme Court should initiate a suo motu case on the matter and find out who the "real perpetrators" were.

"If I am proven to be guilty, I am ready to be sentenced to capital punishment. But if the reality is something else then all of them should be sent to jail for life," he demanded.

Former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry said that the alleged narcotics case pursued against incumbent interior minister Rana Sanaullah was "rubbish".

During an interview with a private news channel on Thursday, the PTI leader said, “when this case was brought before the cabinet and I spoke up about it, the concerned officer left”.

In response to who the “concerned officer” was, Chaudhry’s response was vague. However, he stated that he never believed the case had merit, “when I asked questions regarding the case, I knew the case was just rubbish.”

Referring to former state minister for narcotics control Shehryar Afridi’s oath which had taken regarding the case's veracity, Chaudhry remarked, “what he did was wrong”.

Sanaullah was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) on July 1, 2019, from the Islamabad-Lahore motorway. The ANF claimed to have recovered 15 kilogrammes of heroin and other drugs from his possession during the operation conducted on a tip-off.

The PML-N leader insisted he had been implicated in a false case and was being politically victimised.

Afridi during a national assembly session stated, “If you [Sanaullah] are speaking the truth then you must face the trial and do not use the delaying tactics.”

Furthermore, the ANF had accused Sanaullah of drug trafficking, stating that the minister admitted to being involved in practice for the last few years.

"Rana Sanaullah used to take drugs from Afghans in Faisalabad and supply them abroad. He said his vehicle was not checked so he used to smuggle drugs in his personal vehicle," the challan said.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Saturday blamed former prime minister Imran Khan for the "spurious and mala fide" drugs case against him and said that he had spoken to Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa about the Anti-Narcotics Force's (ANF) role in this regard.

Sanaullah was arrested in the case in July 2019 under the previous PTI government by the ANF which claimed to have recovered 15kg of heroin from his vehicle. He was later granted bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC).

A special court for the control of narcotic substances in Lahore has summoned the interior minister on July 23 for the framing of charges against him.

The PML-N has previously alleged that the then-prime minister was behind the case.

The matter returned to the political discourse after PTI's Fawad Chaudhry, in an interview on Express News on Thursday, conceded that the case against Sanaullah was "rubbish".

Speaking to the broadcaster's Javed Chaudhry, Fawad stated he never believed the case had merit and it "should never have been filed against him".

In a series of tweets today, Sanaullah iterated the PML-N's claims, alleging that Imran was the "mastermind of the bogus case" while former adviser on accountability and interior Mirza Shahzad Akbar and former DG ANF were "complicit".

"Shahzad Akbar impelled the capital police to place a bag of 15-kilo heroin in my lodge which [they] refused to do so. All the proceedings were undertaken on the directives of the former premier who wanted me behind the bars due to his personal enmity," he said.

Sanaullah added that he had written and spoken to the army chief about the ANF's role in the case against him.

Responding to Sanaullah's claim, Akbar said that several cabinet members, including Chaudhry and him, had expressed concerns over the case in a meeting.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has approached the Supreme Court, requesting to initiate contempt proceedings against Interior Minister Rana Sansullah for allegedly issuing threatening statements to influence PTI MPAs ahead of the chief minister election on July 22.

Elahi, who is a leader of the PML-Q, filed the contempt petition on Tuesday through Chaudhary Faisal Hussain advocate.

The petition stated that by-elections on the 20 vacant seats were held accordingly and the PML-Q’s allied party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has secured the requisite majority according to the unofficial results of the polls held on last Sunday.

The petitioner and his allies are in a comfortable position to form the government in Punjab “as decided by the sovereigns of the state the public at large,” read the petition.

"In pursuant to the order of this august court the preparation for the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab is underway without any hurdle and the petitioner is determined to hold elections and business of assembly in the peaceful, just, the transparent manner in accordance with the Constitution and the law strictly as well as in accordance with letter and spirit of this Hon’ble Court.”

The respondents [PML-N leaders] after losing the majority in the house have become unnerved and showing extreme anger and frustration, the petitioner said.

“The respondent No.2 [CM Hamza Shehbaz] acting in the reckless and unconstitutional and unlawful manner threatened to remove members belonging to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its allies. He blatantly flouted the directions by appearing in a press conference on 18.07.2022 along with the Minister of Information and Broadcasting/Respondent No.3.”

The petition claimed that the statement of Rana Sanaullah abuses, interferes with and obstructs the process of the apex court as the same is to be considered as an obstruction to the implementation of its order.

“And it amounts to creating constitutional vaccum, anomaly or complication, and would keep the citizens of Punjab deprived of due representation and governance. And the court has also directed the state functionaries (in para-v) to refrain from any interference, inducement or influence in the affairs to any person (natural as well as legal) in the process of by-election.”

The threatening statements by the incumbent interior minister has caused great fear and hostility towards members of the allied parties.

"The respondent No.2/ incumbent Chief Minister [Hamza Shehbaz] who is also the contender for the slot of Chief Minister Ship categorically assured this august court for the peaceful election of the Chief Minister Ship on behalf of his party as well, therefore, he is fully responsible for any disregard of the order passed by this august court in letter as well as in spirit and being the head of the Provincial Administration he is responsible to provide fair free and just conditions to hold elections strictly in accordance with direction passed by this august court.”

The petition prayed the alleged contemnor may kindly be summoned, prosecuted and awarded punishment for violating the order dated 01.07.2022 passed by the Supreme Court.

“It is further humbly prayed that alleged contemnor may be directed to comply with the SC direction.”

Fawad says PTI may ban Sanaullah, Tarar's entry to Punjab after regaining province

  • PTI doubles down on demands of CEC and CM Hamza Shahbaz’s resignation.
  • CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja should resign as he has “little time left”, says Chaudhry.
  • Fawad Chaudhry wants immediate ban on Rana Sana’s entry to Punjab.

ISLAMABAD: PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said Tuesday that the PTI — once it forms its government in Punjab — may impose a ban on Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Punjab Home Minister Attaullah Tarar’s entry into the province next week.

The PTI leader’s comments came during a press conference in the federal capital after the interior minister made a statement last night, claiming that five PTI MPs could “disappear” during the voting for Punjab's chief minister.

Voting will take place on July 22 and it is expected that PTI candidate Pervez Elahi may win after the party's landslide victory in Sunday's Punjab by-polls which placed it as the largest party in the provincial assembly.

The PTI leader said that the CM election session's presiding officer, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari, should ban Sanaullah immediately after the statement he made last night.

Fawad said that if Mazari doesn't do so, the PTI may ban Sanaullah and Tarar from entering Punjab a day after the party’s government is formed in the province on July 22.

The former information minister also berated the government for making “false cases” against the PTI leadership — during the events leading up to the “Azadi March” on May 25 and during the Punjab by-polls.

“...it (government) made a false sectarian case against Zulfi Bukhari and tried to arrest him; attempted to arrest a decent man, Shibli Faraz; also arrested Shahbaz Gill, where he was not even given water for over four hours,” he said.

Doubling down on CEC resignation, early poll
Moving on, Fawad said that Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja should resign as he has “little time left” — or he will be kicked out eventually.

The former federal minister said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be reconstituted and new officials, who have the support of all political parties, should be brought in.

He also mentioned that the PTI is ready to speak to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, but only once he announces the date for the new general election.

“We will talk to him. The framework will be worked out by political parties and the most important thing in that will be the reconstitution of the election commission,” he said.

Fawad demanded that an early election be held in the country, doubling down on his party and PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s call.

In a scathing attack on Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz, the ex-information minister demanded the province’s top official resign from office in line with political traditions.

“He [Hamza Shahbaz] should be ashamed. His party suffered a humiliating defeat, even Maryam Nawaz and Malik Ahmad accepted it. He should have tendered his resignation immediately after it,” he said.

Fascist governments qatil ex law (lol) and current interior minister is threatening to derail democracy and to kidnap PTI MPAs to prevent them from voting for the Punjab CM.

PTI MPAs are also getting threatening phone calls and voice messages from Punjab police asking them to provide their whereabouts so they can be kidnapped, said audios have been leaked as well.

This is the level of the imported government, lets see if SC does its job.

The PTI lawyers on Wednesday submitted before the Supreme Court the transcript of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s statement from his presser on July 18 wherein he had allegedly spoken about making the former ruling party’s lawmakers disappear ahead of the Punjab chief minister’s election, and requested that the hearing of the case be fixed for Thursday (today).

The apex court had called for the newspaper report, the original transcript of the conversation held in the news conference and the television talk show which had the interior minister’s statement.

During a press conference on Monday, Sanaullah alongside Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had said: “We will not let Elahi become the CM easily.

"If five to seven PTI lawmakers don’t come to the assembly on the voting day (July 22), how will the PTI have its chief minister?” he had asked.

On Tuesday, Elahi had filed a petition in the apex court requesting it to initiate contempt proceedings against Hamza, Sanaullah, and Marriyum.

Elahi maintained that after the PTI’s victory in the Punjab by-elections, the petitioner and his allies had secured the requisite majority to form the next government in Punjab as decided by the sovereigns of the state the public at large.

He urged the top court to summon the alleged contemnor and award punishment to them for violating the court directions.

In pursuant to the apex court’s July 1 order, Elahi claimed, preparations for the Punjab CM polls were underway without any hindrance and he was determined to hold the election and business of assembly in a peaceful, just, transparent manner in accordance with the constitution and the law strictly as well as in accordance with letter and spirit of the court order.

Meanwhile, the PTI will submit the affidavits of its three MPAs before the Supreme Court on Thursday (today) stating that they had been offered millions of rupees to change their loyalties.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan has already sought the apex court’s intervention on the matter.

The affidavits will be submitted by Chaudhary Faisal Hussain.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday warned of imposing governor’s rule in Punjab if he was restricted from entering the province.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said he had already begun drafting a summary for the imposition of governor’s rule, which is moved by the interior ministry, because of the kind of statements opposition political leaders had been making.

“If my entry is restricted, it will be grounds for governor’s rule,” he asserted.

The interior minister’s presser comes hours after PML-Q’s Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was sworn in as the Punjab chief minister following the Supreme Court verdict which declared Hamza Shehbaz’s victory in the July 22 run-off election as void.

President Dr Arif Alvi administered the oath to Elahi at Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad. Elahi had to rush from Lahore to the federal capital after Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman refused to carry out the job.

Elahi’s swearing-in capped a months-long saga over the provincial chief executive that began with Usman Buzdar’s resignation.

During today’s press conference, the minister said the SC’s decision had “created complications and destabilised the political situation” because of which the rupee was tanking and the stock market was falling.

Even a second-grader would interpret Article 63-A — which is related to the disqualification of lawmakers over defection — as saying that the votes of dissident lawmakers would be counted in the election, he claimed.

He further stated that the SC’s recent verdict contradicted the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to de-seat 25 dissident PTI lawmakers who had voted for Hamza in the April 16 election, which was, in turn, based on an order of the apex court.

The ECP’s verdict had been based on MPAs not following the instructions of the party head whereas the SC had stated the parliamentary party head’s instructions should be followed, he stated.

He went on to say that Hamza should have remained the chief minister since the votes of those 25 dissident lawmakers would not be subtracted from his tally in the April election.

“It is my opinion that the interpretation of Article 63-A will not sustain. Any lawyer will say it amounts to rewriting the Constitution. It is not the SC’s authority to rewrite the Constitution and we will defend the parliament’s authority,” Sanaullah said.

“This situation is unfortunate and we want to restrict our words […] An independent, uncontroversial and impartial judiciary is any country’s basic need. No country can progress without it.”

The interior minister said that the incumbent government did not seek to curb the judiciary’s authority but wanted to “regulate” it.

If the chief justice took suo motu notice and formed benches in consensus with the advice of fellow jurists, then letters like the one circulating since yesterday would not happen, he said, while referring to the one written by Justice Qazi Faez Isa to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan.

In response to a question about whether the PML-N-led coalition government in the Centre would find it difficult to rule now that they no longer had control of Punjab, Sanaullah said: “The federal government has its own role. It is present everywhere. It has so many departments and their resources and budgets are bigger than provincial departments. This kind of conversation is being done by people who neither have intelligence nor knowledge.

“The federal government is a coalition government and it is present everywhere,” he emphasised.

Separately, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz also criticised the court’s decision and termed it “judicial murder”.

“How will you justify this blatant injustice? This is judicial murder but the victim this time is justice. What have you done, chief justice?” she said in a tweet.

Hailing the judgment of the Election Commission of Pakistan in the prohibited funding case against the PTI, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday said that the government can declare the political party as a “foreign-funded party” on the basis of irrefutable evidence.

Speaking to Geo News, Rana Sanaullah said that PTI would be dissolved if the Supreme Court upholds the declaration of the government.

“ECP has made 100% correct decision,” the interior minister said, adding that the judgment proved PTI is a foreign-funded party. He accused the party of hiding its accounts and tempering its financial record.

The PML-N leader, citing the ECP verdict, said the PTI accepted funds from 34 foreigners and 351 companies in violation of the Political Party Act and the Election Act.

ECP’s ruling proved Khan a “lawyer and forger”, the interior minister said, adding that the ruling alliance has devised its future plan after the verdict. He maintained that they would show the real face of Imran Khan to the people.
