Media reports are circulating that Saqlain is the favorite and Mohammad Rizwan has expressed his support for him.

Where is omnipresent Misbah-Ul-Haq? He can take any role any time. If needed he has skills to do 3-4 roles at the same time.

Doesn’t get any better! Unless Intikhab Alam is still available?

Might as well make Misbah the coach. Let him work with his successor Rizwan.

Let this be the end.

Let the sky fall

Good opportunity to read Major's Misbah glazing threads and have a good laugh. I agree. Win win for him and everyone else who wants free entrance for a visit in the circus.

Aaqib, Saqlain in fray to replace Kirsten for Pakistan white ball coach’s job

As an interim management, PCB has asked read ball coach Jason Gillispie to manage the team for white ball series in Australia from Nov 4

Current senior selector Aaqib Javed and former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq are in fray to replace Gary Kirsten as Pakistan’s new white ball coach after the former Proteas batter stepped down due to his differences with country’s cricket board.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Monday, officially confirmed that Kirsten had resigned and as an interim arrangement it has asked the red ball coach, Jason Gillispie to manage the team for the white ball series in Australia from November 4. But Gillespie has intimated that he would look at it as a one-off arrangement.

“The problem is both Kirsten and Gillispie were not happy with their sudden demotion in powers with the selectors given powers to call all the shots,” one source said.

He said since Gillispie was in the middle of the England series he reluctantly accepted the changes but has publicly made it clear he is no happy at not being involved in the selection process.

“The situation now is that PCB has to appoint a new white ball coach given the number of white ball commitments of the national team coming up and leading up to the Champions Trophy early next year,” the source said.

“One option is to let assistant coach Azhar Mahmood continue as interim head coach but Aaqib or Saqlain could also land the job.”

Saqlain has remained head coach of the Pakistan team before but was replaced by Mickey Arthur early last year when Najam Sethi was in power in the board.

The source did say they are some other candidates under consideration and the board chairman, Mohsin Naqvi would soon have talks with shortlisted candidates.

PCB has made no official comment on why Kirsten resigned nor has the former South African player said anything but board insiders say the dispute arose over several issues between Kirsten and PCB.

“Look we had high hopes from Kirsten when we entered into a two-year contract with him. The idea was he could help PCB to revolutionise the white ball team,” one source aware of the happenings said.

He said PCB got the feeling that Kirsten never seemed fully committed to his job.

“He did not have a single camp in Pakistan for any of the white ball teams. He was not present at the white ball camps of the Shaheens throughout the summer. And it all culminated with him missing the majority of the Champions Cup.”

Another complaint against Kirsten is that although his contract stated clearly he would just take 30 day-vacation in a year, he didn’t even spend 30 days in Pakistan after joining.

PCB was also put off with Kirsten’s insistence on having more foreign coaches on his team and the dispute between them blew up once the board decided to strip the coaches of selection powers.

PCB had also sidelined and pushed foreign coaches, Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, etc. to resign after last year’s World Cup.

Comments: It is important to get the PCB's version and point of view. The complaint about Kirsten not having a single white ball camp or spending time in the domestic circuit is justified. Kirsten obviously took advantage of PCB's desperation of hiring high profile coaches and thought he could dictate to them on everything.

PCB obviously let him go for a reason. He was not being fully committed to his role.

Rather give it to Gillespie let him take the full helm and role of coach of all 3 formats

Gillespie is not interested in an all format role. He has only agreed to step in temporarily. I suspect he himself might leave soon should he get a better offer. The PCB unfortunately cannot pay enough to entice someone to treat the Pakistani coaching assignment as a proper full time job and the PCB at the same time probably have not been impressed by Gillespie, Kirsten's selections and strategies.

It’s amusing how you present the PCB as an organisation on par with NASA and its high profile talent as aerospace engineers

Obviously the conjecture will pin the blame on Gary Kirsten.
He’s one of the best coaches going around and clearly knows what he’s doing to have the global credibility. Also he was in Pakistan during the champions cup, so it’s not true that he wasn’t interested in spending time in Pakistan. I don’t believe the PCB and their paid media goons!

The timing of this resignation clearly overlaps with the sudden induction of Aqib Javed and changes in selection/coaching power balance.

Pakistan should just forget about hiring foreign coaches and go with former players. There’s just no other option, as this is likely the nail in the coffin to ever entice a foreign coach to come to Pakistan.

How about allowing all three of them to rotate between the positions of head coach, chief selector, and even CEO of the PCB whenever Naqvi is occupied with his duties as Interior Minister of Pakistan?

Basit Ali speaking on his Youtube Channel:

"Don't become the head coach. This is the best piece of advice I can give you. You're doing well; keep it up."

"But one thing I will say is that Fakhar is facing injustice. If you address the issue, it will be resolved. A hero should not be treated like this."

Saqlain (Qudrat Ka nizam) shouldn't come again. He has failed to create single spinner under him, he will be good for nothing

Why does a foreign coach even take up Pakistan job .

There is toxic media and ex players , unmotivated and back stabbing current cricketers who are deluded they are some kind of superstars. We don’t play attractive brand of cricket like we use to back in the days and there is no exceptional youth level talent on top of that it’s a conservative boring country to live that comes with security risks there is not one attractive factor in a Pakistan coach job for a middle to high profile foreign coach

A Pakistani coach would be much better. They have the experience of dealing with unprofessional players like Younis Khan match fixers like Aamir.

“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”, Andy Warhol may have said that.

On those lines maybe they should consider making everyone coach of Pakistan team for 15 minutes? That way everyone gets a go, blame gets shared, no one has to accept responsibility.

Did you mean yes man for Aqib
Yes. Aqib is the new guy of Pakistan cricket and whether he becomes white ball coach or not, he will remain the de facto chief selector.

Having a puppet coach like Saqlain works in his favor because it allows him to run the show without taking all the blame.

We all know that Aqib will be sacked within a year if he becomes the actual coach.

Saqlain will be a disaster.

Not only will he ruin the team, don’t forget what will happen to SHADAB Khan. A mockery of our bowling on display again.

Anyone but Saqlain for me.

I would say that he is just filling in his resume towards another job. Perhaps a CA or IPL gig. Kirsten doesn't need anything like that, which is why he told the PCB to take hike.

The fact that he'll be lobbying to bring Shadab back alone is enough to oppose him as head coach

Yup, in this phase of the drama, it appears rizwan is also expected to be a yes man. But rizwan “50% cramp, 50% acting” knows when to put on a show. He also wants a foot in the door and gradually snatch power.

Board needs to pick a white ball coach, not pick someone players are recommending (thats putting cart before the horse), Saqlain's was a motivational chahcu with zero tactical nous. Aaqib will qalandar this team. Give the role to Dizzy or go and get hesson, but oh well who would want to work with a clown board?

It's only a matter of time before Jason Gillespie gives in his resignation. Aaqib & Saqi seems to be the likely outcome but the end of the year.

it can only happen in Pakistan where we remove the qualified coach to hire some local senseless coaches.

Shaba Saqi Shaba Saqie..........

PCB has no professionalism and competence

Saqlain is the best Pakistan can think of , that clearly shows the mindset , when you bring in mediocre people , you will continue to get mediocre results.

Pakistan need to appoint the best foreign coach they can find. This will be tricky given how Kirsten and Gillespie were unceremoniously booted out by the PCB.

Best Pakistani option would be Younis Khan but I don't know if he has all the coaching qualifications.

Younis Khan has not completed his Level 2 like Misbah :yk

Afghanistan won’t let go of Jonathon Trott anytime soon but he would be on my radar at some point when he becomes available.

This would be an excellent appointment. Good spot bro

Ah it would be, can you imagine what Trott would do in reaction to pansy talk like ‘I’ve been playing for many many years.’

The last Pakistan player who was being cheeky towards Trott:

‘I smashed my pads across his face — they made a great sound — and grabbed him by the throat.’

Would be lovely if this happened to Rizwan, slap the make-up off his face @Rana

Exactly what we need. Looks like he tore a new one into Wahab.

No self respecting foreign coach will want to be employed (read abused) by PCB. In an ideal world I'd like a meticulous taskmaster like Andy Flower but that ain't happening.

Most likely we'll go back to the armchair philosopher Saqlain or Waqar (who can become the reverse Booker T - five times failed coach).

With all due respect to you as a great poster here,

No thanks. We have seen how this guy couldn’t change a basic issue at Multan Sultans with Rizwan opening every game, whilst every bonafide T20 opener they had was being shifted around. So this guy clearly has no power or sway over a guy who has NO UNDERSTANDING of the game.

Thank you but we don’t want guys who have been complicit in crimes towards Pakistan cricket!

Going back to another TTF Saqlain. Keep doing the same thing again and again and expect different results, Pakistan Cricket in a nutshell for you when it comes to selecting Pakistani players and Pakistani coaches.

I haven't watched PSL in years so can't speak to the selection decisions there. However when coaching the national team you've a bigger pool of players to pick from compared to a franchise so it could be a different scenario ?

Regardless of who it is, we need someone who prepares for each opponent meticulously (not relying on natural talent and qudrat ka nizam) and understands requirements of modern game.

That automatically rules out our ex-pros who are still stuck in 80s/90s era.

Afghanistan has improved a lot under Jonathan Trott. You don't need big names for coaching, PCB should look for low profile coach from domestics of Eng & Aus. They should ideally continue with Aqib for 1 more year and give full authority but please no more Saqlain, Waqar, Misbah

Think the mods can start a new thread now, “Aqib Javid set to replace Saqlain Mushtaq after a disastrous Asia Cup performance.”

Coaching is overrated in cricket. You need strong captains to become a champion team. In absence of such a captain, you can hand over power to the coach who makes strategy and playing XIs. Such an arrangement rarely works. India had Kumble, Shastri and now Gambhir. All three are not sought after coaches globally.

Saqlain wasn't too bad. Babar's captaincy was an issue. Under Saqlain, I saw Pakistan use floaters (Nawaz and Shadab) after a long time. That arrangement of M Wasim as chief selector and Saqlain Mushtaq as head coach was the best one we had for a long time (Mickey and Inzi comes close). They were let down by all powerful captain in Babar Azam who was timid to step out of his comfort zone. Had he done that we may have won 3 trophies; WC21, WC22 and Asia cup !

Yes. Pakistan were quite competitive in World T20 2021 and World T20 2022.

Afghans are willing to learn , Pakistan is not in the same mindset.

The issue is the mediocre system. Otherwise Lawson , Pybus , Kirsten , Rixon were all quality coaches.

In India they need man management people , rest is done by the system.

So if the Saqi thing is true then my theory of the coaches making no difference was right all along. This then leads to a simple question, why waste money on these guys. At this rate Mohsin Khan and his brew will soon make a comeback. We urgently need a director of cricket that is the focal point for all decisions. But he can't magic talent that the broken system isn't developing or nurturing

I humbly disagree as under Saqlain's coaching Pakistan was relying totally on Qudrat ka Nizam type things.

Saqlain failed to produce single quality spinner during his tenure. Those who were spinners, they actually forgot the art of spin bowling like Shadab, Nawaz. Under Saqlain's coaching guys like Babar, Rizwan & Shaheen started getting VIP treatment, players like Iftikhar & Shadab got free ride and someone like Asif Ali was never allowed to play up in the order and in the end discarded. Under his coaching team lost 7 match T20 series against Eng at home by a margin of 5-2 and the coach was saying "qudrat ka nizam".

There shouldn't be a place for anyone in the team or management who cannot give straight forward answer in his native language
