According to NYTimes,
I think most of us have received a call or two from these scumbags in India, so we know what we are talking about here.
We have a land line registered to my mother's name for about 21 years now.
My mother passed away about 11 years ago (may Allah bless her soul in peace. Ameen). Her name was one of those names that is common for both males and females of Pakistani origin.
Usually, when these stinky scammers from India call (takes less than a second to identify them), I extend them a few extremely hard core maa bhen type expletives, and hang up before giving them a chance to cuss back. This is how sick I have gotten from this nuance.
Sometimes I do receive a marketing call or two from Pakistan (very rarely), trying to sell an online Quran learning class for kids or trying to sell some other product (tv package/phone package etc). This is understandable and I can live with it, so I politely turn them down, and they don't persist.
But this one was different.
I saw Pakistan's country code on the caller's ID and picked up the phone.
The guy on the other end, asked for my mother's name to see if this person was available?
This was a classical sign of a scammer who didn't know that the person he is trying to reach has passed away more than a decade ago.
But since the call was from Pakistan, I got a lil curious and thought to verify what I expected.
So he asked me if I was the person he was trying to reach?
I said, Yes.
So he goes on with a scripted story about his mother having a cancer and being treated at a local hospital. And he had sold his rikshaw to pay off some of the bills; however a huge medical expense is in the works and he desperately needed money and wanted me to help him.
So I decided to give him a chance based on his face value.
I said, what's the name of the hospital your mother is admitted at?
He said, "Rehman complex".
And I wasn't aware of any hospital by this name in Peshawar, but still thought, perhaps it's a new hospital.
I said, gimme the ward # and bed # and I will have someone visit and see what can we do about it?
He slightly changed his story and said, "oh no, actually I took my mother home and we will visit the hospital again in a few days".
I said OK, where is this hospital located at?
He said, across from Nishtar Hospital. Again, another surprise for me.
I asked, where is Nishtar Hospital.
He goes, "Here in Multan".
Now, I know that I have never been to Multan, and neither do we have any family or friends in Multan, so this was another red flag.
So I asked him, OK and who gave you my #?
He said: Mr. Khalid.
I go, "Who is Khalid?"
He goes, "I was crying in the hospital when Khalid walked up to me gave me your #".
I said, get me Khalid's # so that I can call him and find out who is he, and verify your story?
He said, Sir, I don't know how to find Khalid.
I said OK, I will call the hospital and verify your mother's detail. And to his credit, he DID give the doctor's name who was treating his mother. And he didn't object to my quest when I said, OK I will speak with the Dr. at the hospital. (Perhaps the doctors is also involved ? lol)
To me, this was a 99% scammer call, a first one, that I received from Pakistan.
I think I gots to appreciate the scammers in Pakistan who have gone one level up, and got access to those list of Tel #'s in USA that Indian scammers use. I think these lists are available to all for a little money.
However, I am posting this OP for two reasons.
First, to see of any PPers are located in Multan and can meet this person at the hospital to verify his story, and if true, I will happily help him within my means. (I have his # saved from the caller's ID).
Second, if it WAS a scammer, then just wanting to give folks a heads up that this has started from Pakistan too.
