Scoring 500 a 'realistic target' for England, says Mark Wood

England can become the first team to post a total of 500 in one-day cricket, says fast bowler Mark Wood.

England have the two highest scores of all time - 481 and 444 - both at Trent Bridge, where they meet Pakistan in the third game of the series on Friday.

"That is a realistic target for our one-day team," Wood told BBC Sport.

"It's almost normal to get 350; 400 is easily gettable. We truly believe that we can chase down high scores, no matter what the opposition get."

England will wrap up the series with victory in Nottingham, having taken a 2-0 lead with two matches to play by winning in Bristol on Tuesday.

On that occasion, Jonny Bairstow's century set the home side on course to overhaul Pakistan's 358-9, England's second-highest run-chase and the joint-fifth highest of all time.

With England naming their squad for the World Cup next Tuesday, they will continue to rotate their team for the fourth match of the series and could make as many as five changes.

Captain Eoin Morgan is suspended after England's slow over-rate in Bristol and will be replaced as skipper by Jos Buttler, who was rested for the third game.

Opener Bairstow, seamer Chris Woakes and pace bowler Liam Plunkett, all of whom missed training on Thursday, will play no part, while left-arm seamer David Willey could also be rested.

James Vince will come in to open the batting, with leg-spinner Adil Rashid and pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Wood making up the bowling attack.

For Wood, who has a history of ankle injuries, it will be his first competitive cricket since England's Twenty20 series against West Indies in March.

"I feel in good rhythm," he said. "In terms of being 100%, I've not played any matches lately, so I'm still missing a little bit of match fitness.

"I feel fit and strong and in good rhythm in practice, but there's nothing like a game when you are under pressure and you need that extra adrenaline. I can't wait to get out there and try to win the series."

Competition for a place in the World Cup squad is keenest among the fast bowlers.

Barbados-born Archer, who qualified to play for England in March, has played only two ODIs but looks set to be included alongside Woakes, meaning one of Wood, Plunkett, Willey or Tom Curran is likely to miss out.

"Everyone wants to make the World Cup squad, so you're desperate to push your case," said Wood.

"Jofra is world class and I would fully expect him to be in World Cup squad. That leaves four or five of us trying to fight it out for the other places.

"Everyone has done well -it's hard to say what will happen. It means that tomorrow I will have step up and put in a good performance.

God that would be embarrasing
Best hope is to bat first and not give them a chance to score 500.

Yeah they can do it against sides like Afghanistan:uakmal No chance of Eng scoring 500 in the WC or the two remaining one day matches. Forget it, talk his cheap lets see them doing it.

They scored 481 against Australia so they can easily do it against weaker teams

All this arrogance will come to naught if they fail to win the WC

It is very very tough. That is 10 run an over for 50 overs. Every batsman in the line up has to click.

Lets not over hype them, England have always known to crumble under pressure. They were suppossed to massacre us in the 2017 CT semi final but were horribly underwhelming in that crunch game

If we can continue to have these rubbish pitches, 45 metres boundaries and two new balls then 500 will be on the cards.

I hate ODI cricket of today.

And then blamed the ICC for a "bad" pitch, ignoring the fact that our batsmen had no issues whatsoever.

Oh no, the day of judgement is upon us, God forbid

I just hope the bowlers maintain their line and length and don’t get overawed by the muscle, might and coolness of Morgan and co

Hopefully hasan ali, Babar Azam and Asaf Ali are wise enough to bowl to a plan

Anything other than a fault wicket and they will lose the match.

Not just against Pakistan - but against most oppositions.

If they can dictate the pitches in the world cup, the home ground advantage may play a massive role for England this time around.

I wish it backfires on them big time against one of the times like they post a total of 390 and someone like Finch goes nuts and chases that total with ease.

Absolute joke, odis will be dead in a few years with these kind of pitches.
Look at the 99 world cup par score 275 with the odd 300 & you got the 2 classic aus v Sa & pak v aus (the one pak won) matches.

When pak scores 360 in consecutive matches you know pitches aint right.

Ideal pitch should be something for the batters and bowlers. 280 to 300 tops. Don't like 350 plus games at all. Feel sorry for the bowlers.

Arrogancy has caused many downfall throughout history. England is getting way ahead of themselves here with comments like this. Could literally be a banana peel match if they can't back their comment up here.

England has become Wasseypur for bowlers. Bichara ek haath se bowling karega dusre se izzat bachayega.

Come in the world cup, i expect SA to beat them in the first match itself and feel they might qualify or miss the semifinals by a close margin.

Yeah England can become the first team to score 500 in ODI. There is no doubt about it but England can also become the first team to lose a match after scoring 500. They have such a terrible bowling attack. Teams with good spinners can limit their total to less than 300 but who will take wickets for England? :inti

Kings of JAMODIS. What have they actually achieved in white ball cricket/ ICC tourneys?

Watch them crumble in the SEMIS.

I'm well versed with most of the terminology used on PP, but what are JAMODIs? I can figure out the last three letters but what is the JAM?

Won't be possible today cos Pakistan are batting first

And ICC seem to be well prepared for it in the World Cup!

England's best chance to smash 500 on 3rd June 2019

They will not get easier opponents or conditions than this in the WC19. Pakistan are extremely low on confidence & showing absolutely no passion or unity. On the other hand, England's batters in form of their life. Everyone is smashing anything delivered at them. According to media reports, pitch is as flat as it can get at trent bridge.
Pakistan will definitely bowl first if they win toss, England should opt to bat & go for it.

Just like they were suppose to put up 500 against at Trent Bridge last time we played them? Oh wait what happened there they barely chased down 340 against us didn't they and that too was only because of :jk

They were 216-5.

A proper captain with cricketing acumen would not have ever let England get so close to 340.

True but their batting is proper deep as well.
Also the missed run out helped them.

Also the missed run out helped them.

I am not even going to name the culprit in that.

He took the bail off himself and he said he thought the bails were already off.

Doesn't get anymore incompetent than that.
