What's new

Scotland [371/5] beat England [365] by 6 runs in the one-off ODI

Match panning out as I thought - Scotland don't have the bowlers to defend this.

Scotland should have gone for Sharif, Evans and Sole to finish the innings rather than giving pies to Ali and Plunkett at this stage of the match. Thats called inexperience

I knew Moen will go after Watt as the bowl coming into him, turns out the gamble paid off

Ah well it was fun while it lasted..... Moeen looks like he's going to win it for England..... shame would've been funny if we beat them at their own sport!

Well you've practically won the game now, Adil Rashid is at the crease goodness me  what a terrible terrible cricketer

Plunkett has played one hell of a knock here under pressure

Markhor All he had to do was get his bat in the damn crease!!!! my god, all them ramazan kebabs have slowed him down:dw

SCENES! they've done it :))) Shame on you Adil Rashid all your fault

Congratulations Scotland!

Great for Scottish cricket and for cricket in general.

The Heavyweights of cricket have been beaten by the Featherweights of Scotland, EMBARRASSING for England and shame on the ICC, SHAME ON YOU!

Sharif channelling those Pakistani genes with a beautiful inswinging yorker that would've made Waqar proud.

Great win for Scotland. Fearless cricket. Humiliation for England a real jolt but perhaps in the long run it will work out for them

Good reality check for England bowling. Conceded too much runs today that allowed Scotland to comeback. They need to sort it out .

Cant believe Scotland nearly put up 400.

Congrats...shows England are a beatable side. My prediction: Poms won't be winning the world cup next year although they will have more 400+ totals than any other team.

They play a tri series with Ireland and the Netherlands.

Yes but unfortunately it wont be that high profile series which everyone will see and appreciate some really good players in all these teams and that is if it is televised. These 3 teams deserve and have been deserving for the last 3-4 years regular matches against top sides (Feasibility is there as we have see wonderful crowd in Ireland and now in Scotland and it will increase) as they have some players who have potential to be stars. Ryan ten Doeschate is also one such wasted commodity.

Thanks mate. TBH I was expecting it to be a big loss for us today so still in shock! ICC needs to take note. We achieved this despite getting little to no support from them. If they truly want to develop the game they must back the associate nations more.

Wow what a win.

Good thing we picked a full strength squad :srt

Tbf, you add buttler and stokes to this team, and it completely changes it. Goes from a 5/10 ODI side to a 8/10 IMO.

Couldn't agree more with you, how ICC have treated the associates is just criminal; hope this win sets a few alarm bells at the HQ

Incredible scenes, Scotland beat England in an ODI for the first time ever! I was going to say Scotland was going the glorious failure route straight from their football team, but not today.

Thanks man - phenomenal game!!

What a game! Unfortunately, I couldn't watch the last 10 overs but what a game! Scotland has really proved that they can compete with the big boys.

The 10 teams WC is a joke.

Imagine if Ireland and Scotland could play in a cricket WC which is being held next door.

They would have had great support.

Such a shame.

Scotland is a very improved team. This is the strongest they have been since I followed associate cricket for the last 10 years.

And today win was amazing. To score 370+ against the nr. 1 side was an great effort. Great win after the start they got. Total flat wicket and it looked like England would cruise, but Scotland showed great caracter. Well done Scotland.

Scotland have beaten 2 full member teams, one being the #1 ODI team, yet still aren't in the world Cup...

If they don't go back to the 14 or 16 team format for 2023 I'll be pretty annoyed

Another slap in the face of the ICC and everyone who thinks there is no cricket outside of top 8. Shame on the ICC once again for trimming the WC to 10 teams so that people can watch Ind-Eng-Aus play each other for a zillionth time.

Fantastic Scotland... Congratulations.

The Associates are all much stronger than they were even 5-6 years back. The ICC has pumped millions of dollars into the Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League over the last 15 or so years and that is reaping rich dividends. Afghanistan, Scotland, Nepal, Ireland perhaps even the Netherlands all have talented players and can all knock over most of the top sides in limited overs cricket.

I don't mind a 10 or 12 team WC (but I'd be singing a differnt song if my team was cut out), but the ODI league needs to be expanded to 15 teams. And then have the top 6-8 sides qualify automatically for the World Cup with the rest combining with the teams ranked 9th to 18th or so in the Qualifiers.

Fantastic celebration and very richly deserved. Really pleased to see the Scotts perform so well. Congratulations to all the scottish cricketing faternity. Amazing performance.

Must have been a great game to watch but can we please stop with the pancake pitches? England should start the finger-pointing from their curators.

Shame on the ICC ... This is proof that these associates have the potential to compete. The likes of Scotland, Zimbabwe, and Ireland are competitive teams and could definitely take down Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, while they can absolutely compete with other teams on their day.

Just think of the missed opportunity, they could have added Scotland and Ireland as co-hosts for the world cup and given them a few games. It would have done wonders for promoting cricket in both countries.

Woo hoo! Eid se pehle Eidhi! :afridi1 Great performance by the lads scoring so heavily when we batted. One time England seemed to be coasting before our famous pacers joined the action:saslam Scotland has a bright future in the game I feel. We are far better then an associate side for goodness sake, give us proper status like Ireland. Congrats!

Brilliant win for Scotland. Shows how the gap has decreased between associate nations and full member nations. ICC reducing number of teams in the world cup looks stupid by each passing day.

You are a Scotland supporter? Never knew.

it was interesting to see the number of Asian supporters running on the pitch in jubilation at the end of the match!

never seen that South of the border for an England win.

maybe I'm reading too much into it! but it did catch me by surprise somewhat

Scotland beating England 'boosts Test-playing hopes' - Cricket Scotland chairman

Sunday's stunning victory over England is a real boost for Scotland's Test-playing aspirations, says Cricket Scotland chairman Tony Brian.

The Scots posted a record score of 371-5 to beat England for the first time by six runs in Edinburgh.

"We've done something that's the equivalent of the football team winning at Wembley in 1967 and the rugby Grand Slam of 1990," Brian told BBC Scotland.

"We're so close to our goal of full member status now."

The International Cricket Council currently has 12 full members, with Scotland an associate nation.

Ireland and Afghanistan were the last sides to make the step up in the summer of 2017, while Bangladesh were elevated in 2000.

"I can see us getting there in the next couple of years," said Brian. "That would be a huge step forward."

Scotland had not beaten full member opposition until last year's one-day international success against Zimbabwe in Edinburgh.

They also beat Sri Lanka weeks before in a series that was not given full ODI status.

'Probably the best day Scotland has ever had'

Victory over Afghanistan followed in the World Cup Qualifier in March, along with a draw against hosts Zimbabwe.

"That's the fourth Test side we've beaten inside the last year," added Brian, when reflecting on the performance against England at The Grange.

"It was truly special. It's fair to we were all pretty emotional.

"We were the better team on the day and that's very pleasing. Probably the best day Scotland has ever had.

"The reason this is the biggest is the profile it gets, particularly in Scotland, and the impact it will have as we grow grassroots cricket and getting kids inspired.

"The ICC set strict criteria for us to meet for full member status and we're only two away.

"We probably need one more win against a top nation and our women's team, who are also rapidly improving, need to do well at a World Cup qualifier. They are playing in the Netherlands in July, so that gives them a great opportunity to tick that box."

Brian added his voice to the widespread criticism of the decision to reduce next year's World Cup to 10 teams from 14, revealing that he is "pushing for 16" for the 2023 edition.

He also made the case for improved funding from the ICC.

"We need more games for our men and women," he said. "It's not too difficult to attract teams to come to Scotland. Our problem is the money it takes to stage the games.

"We don't make any profit to speak of from these types of games since they cost an awful lot to put on.

"We need more money and that comes principally from the ICC, who are pretty generous but we'd like them to be even more generous, particularly as we're doing so well right now.

"We've been in discussions with them for some time. In the next four or five months I would hope a new package would become available and we can move forward with more cricket.

"This victory is hugely helpful. No one can pretend that we're not capable of playing at this level."

Scotland are now preparing for two T20 matches against Pakistan in Edinburgh, on Tuesday, 12 June, and Wednesday, 13 June.
