The Senate Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) on Wednesday summoned Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ehsan Mani over the dismal performance of the national cricket team against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan ended earlier this month with the guests completing a 3-0 clean-sweep in the Twenty20 series in Lahore. Pakistan had claimed the ODI series in Karachi with 2-0.

The committee members expressed concerns over the lackluster performance of the green shirts in the matches.

"Had we [committee members] been in the place of the cricket team, Pakistan would have won," remarked Committee Chairman Senator Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasar.

PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan criticised the PCB chairman for not attending the meetings and asked the committee chairman to make it mandatory for the chief of the cricket body to attend all meetings of the Senate committee.

He alleged that Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad were included in the team "as a favour", adding that Misbahul Haq was pressured to take the decision.

PTI Senator Faisal Javed said that he was unable to digest the defeat of green shirts on home ground. The senator termed the performance as "shameful". He also raised questions over the appointment of the same person as chief selector and coach.

Last month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a first, had appointed former skipper Misbahul Haq to the joint position of head coach and chief selector for the men's team.

Javed said he wanted to know the reasons behind the team's defeat, asking why all the members of the "number one Twenty20" team were changed.

The senator said that former head coach Mickey Arthur had leveled several accusations against Umar Akmal, inquiring as to why the sportsman was included in the team soon after Arthur's departure.

He added that all these issues should be addressed before the upcoming "important tour" of Australia.

I detest when politician try to meddle in sporting affairs - however, it's hard to muster any kind of sympathy for the current PCB setup. The Mani and W.Khan combo is off to a poor start and I don't mind a bit of grilling or public humiliation such as this.

wasim didnt play the matches...the majority of the players would have been selected either way in that T20 team..they have had a reasonably good start to their reign..we should give them more time..these politicians just want things to go back to the way it was so they can profit from it..

Both Mani and Wasim need to sack first even before Misbah so the MD will not choose another rubbish to loose his own job.

Wasim Khan was instrumental in restructuring the coaching setup which we all know was a farce. Under this coaching setup, the #1 ranked T20 team got whitewashed by a side consisting of nobodies at home!

They've already received a lot of flak on the coaching appointments, so I am not sure how they are off to a "reasonably good start".

As I said, I am not in favor of politician meddling in sporting affairs but this setup doesn't deserve any kind of sympathy in the wake of the horrible decisions they've made till now.

Assigning Misbah to any role which he has zero experience in was always a clown move, and looks like circus was in town vs SL.

The T20 results are meaningless and have no long term impact. The T20 should be a development team with a few regulars and it's only the T20 WC that matters. Misbah should be criticised but for the lack of young players, not the results.

With the way the set up is. Expect to see more public humiliation in the future.

Well, nothing really has long term impact. However, the selection process, even for the T20s has been nothing short of shambolic. The way AS and UA were brought in and then left out defies all logic. We can underrate T20s all we want, but there still should be a process and forward-thinking when it comes to selection.

Misbah has be to criticized for the results because he's the CS, Head coach and batting coach. With those responsibilities, there's nothing that is not his domain.

What's Mani going to say?

I mean what a futile exercise this is.

I agree that they shouldn't have been a recall but the reality is that PK media and fans would have been baying for his blood and if they hadn't won and those guys weren't recalled. The current system will take a few years to bed in but it will start the process of developing better players. I don't care about T20 internationals, they are forgotten quicker than they are played, they should be used to bring in young players like most countries do and only the T20 WC matters and you play your strongest team.

Would you rather win with Hafeez and Malik, or lose with the young players in these matches?

LOL Misbah clown played Shehzad, Akmal, 36 year old Wahab, Ifti chacha which youngsters you are talking about?

This is the problem- they lose these games and they will go for guys even older than the ones they picked. He needs to bite the bullet and play the younger players and not worry about results. T20 games are not remembered for more than a few days but using them to discover a gem will leave a long term legacy.

This will happen regardless. We are rotten from top to bottom, when people are not in charge they will sit in front of the tv and give suggestions and cry about the state of pak cricket, same people will become in charge and do absolutely nothing and become part of the problem.

PCB is basically a recycle bin all you need is a solid connection to get into the team. Merit doesn't work here, now with this genius in charge we will regress more. Aus will give the punch of their life to this team, now wait for Shehzad getting another chance ... based on his match winning 100 in domestic T20 cup :jk

ISLAMABAD: Senator Mushahidullah Khan on Wednesday alleged that national team’s head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq was pressurised by high office to accommodate Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal in the playing eleven against Sri Lanka in recently-concluded T20 series at home.

The Senate Standing Committee on Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC), which met here at Parliament House with Senator Yaqoob Khan Nasir in the chair, criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board over the dismal performance of cricket team against the fourth-tier Sri Lankan team, which outclassed Pakistan, the top-ranked T20 team of the world, in all three matches.

During the course of the meeting, PML-N Senator Mushahidullah raised questions over the selection of discarded batsmen Shehzad and Umar, both of whom could not perform in both T20 matches they played.

The senator alleged that these players were made part of the playing eleven on “sifarish”. After the committee meeting, while explaining his allegations, Senator Mushahidullah said that he came to know that head coach Misbah was not willing to consider the duo for selection but he was pressurised by “upper circles” high office that resulted in the defeat of national team against a depleted Sri Lanka.

He said that Misbah should not have entertained the ‘sifarish’ but the head coach had no other option but to resign. “Misbah preferred to save his job but the team lost,” he lamented and, in an obvious reference to PM Imran Khan, said that a man who claimed he is Ph.D in cricket is responsible for the national team’s poor performance.

To query about unemployment among the cricketers [because of the closure of department cricket], Mushahidullah said: “What to talk about unemployment of cricketers here, there’s unemployment all around.”

He added that Misbah is otherwise an honest person and his selection as coach was justified.

Earlier, the Standing Committee deferred discussion on matters relating to the Pakistan Cricket Board due to absence of PCB chairman at the forum and decided that a comprehensive briefing will soon be taken from Ehsan Mani regarding the shocking defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the T20 series.

The matters of poor quality broadcasting of local and international matches by PTV will also come under discussion in the next meeting among other related issues.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Senator Yaqoob Khan Nasir here at the Parliament House and was attended, among others, by Senators Abida Muhammad Azim, Azam Khan Swati, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Faisal Javed, Mushahidullah Khan, Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Secretary Inter-Provincial Coordination Akhter Durrani, Director Domestic cricket PCB Haroon Rasheed and officials from ministry and relevant government departments.

Senate Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination has expressed its displeasure over the absence of chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and decided to take a comprehensive briefing from him in the next meeting regarding the shocking defeat of Pakistan by Sri Lanka in the T20 series and why certain players who did not fulfill any criterion were all of a sudden made part of the team.

The committee met with Senator Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Nasar in the chair at the Parliament House on Wednesday. The meeting has a scheduled briefing by PCB regarding the new domestic cricket structure and after little discussion it was also deferred till the next meeting with directions of including statistics of any and all players being unemployed due to the change in structure. The matters of quality broadcasting of local and international matches by Pakistan Television (PTV) will also come under discussion in the next meeting among other related issues.

The committee while discussing a calling attention notice regarding the formation and functioning of a separate secretariat of CCI recommended to the federal government that there should be a permanent secretariat of CCI, working in consultation with the ministry to be able to have efficient coordination with the provinces. The committee also called for empowering the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination for the purpose.

The matter related to problems being faced in implementation of some of the devolved subjects by the provinces also came under discussion in the meeting. The secretary inter-provincial coordination presented to the committee the compliance report of the committee's recommendations given in the previous meeting.

The meeting was attended among others by Senators Abida Muhammad Azim, Azam Khan Swati, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Faisal Javed, Mushahidullah Khan, Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Dr Fehmida Mirza, Secretary for Inter-Provincial Coordination Akhter Durrani, Director Domestic Cricket PCB Haroon-ur-Rasheed, and officials from ministry and relevant government departments.

Thanks for using the right terminology here.

How is wasim responsible for a team playing with the same players not showing up? he didnt ask babar to get out and haris and co to just give up did he? These are just excuses..

The players win matches and a coach hasnt even had a chance yet and its all his fault too..nonsensical garbage..some of you fans are so off point it beggars belief..

Former senator calls for overhaul of PCB

LAHORE: Agitated by the national cricket team’s pathetic performance in international contests, former member of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports Enver Baig on Saturday urged the government to completely overhaul the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“The PCB needs complete overhauling and its top management including chairman should be removed as it has proved [itself] a worse set-up as compared to the previous one,” Enver said while talking to Dawn on Saturday.

“A tweet from Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant Naeem-ul-Haq against the PCB should be enough to indicate the worse situation prevailing in the cricketing affairs of the country,” Enver added.

“Pakistanis, especially diehard cricket fans, are disappointed by national team’s [poor] performance in Australia and prior to that, by the embarrassing show by our T20 team, ranked No.1 in the world, in the three-match home series against Sri Lanka,” Enver said.

“The Pakistan team in Australia is looking like a bunch which has no head or foot as the PCB is running on trial after trial. For how much more time will you go on trials [like these],” he asked.

Enver said PCB chairman Ehsan Mani might be a good chartered accountant but he had proved himself a worst cricket administrator.

“The nation expected a completely transformed PCB under Prime Minister Imran Khan but unfortunately this kind of cricket administration has only made the situation worse,” the ex-Senator lamented.

He reckoned the PCB high-ups were more interested in their perks, and were not ready to take their responsibilities.

“The PCB chairman hired the most expensive chief executive officer [Wasim Khan] to call the shots. He [the CEO] then hired Misbah-ul-Haq [as chief selector-cum-head coach] on a lucrative package in order to use his [Misbah’s] shoulder in case of poor performance by the Pakistan team,” Enver alleged.

ISLAMABAD: A senate panel on Wednesday showed its displeasure over Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani for constantly ignoring calls for a meeting.

The Senate Standing Committee on Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) headed by Senator Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan was supposed to get “comprehensive briefing from the PCB chairman regarding the new domestic cricket structure.”

However, Mani, who did not attend the last three meetings, did not turn up once again for Wednesday’s meeting held briefly here at the Parliament House.

At the onset of meeting, an official of PCB told the committee that Mani was unable to attend due to engagements related to Bangladesh cricket team’s visit to Pakistan.

The committee members showed their displeasure that neither IPC minister Dr. Fehmida Mirza, nor Mani and PCB director domestic cricket Haroon Rasheed turned up for the meeting.

The committee chairman decided not to take briefing from the PCB officials present in meeting, adding that the committee will take up the matter with Chairman Senate.

“Chairman PCB did not turn up in the three previous meetings and now has skipped under the pretext of Bangladesh team’s arrival, which will in fact reach Pakistan tonight,” a press release issued by the Senate Secretariat quoted the committee’s chairman as saying.

The committee chairman warned that the case will be referred to the privileges committee, if Mani fails to attend the next meeting as well. The panel decided to defer the proceedings in protest.

Besides, cricketing affairs, the committee was also supposed to get briefing on “Restructuring of Pakistan Sports Board” but entire agenda was postponed.

A parliamentary panel on Monday, while expressing serious displeasure over the absence of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairperson Ahsan Mani, said if the chairperson did not attend the next meeting the committee would issue him a show cause notice.

The Senate Functional Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas held here under the chairmanship of Senator Usman Khan Kakar to discuss different sports facilities in far flung and less developed areas of the country, directed the PCB chairperson to ensure presence in the next meeting.

The panel also expressed serious reservations over non-inclusion of local players in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams, saying the management of the PSL must ensure 51 percent representation of local players in regional teams to help find and explore new talent.

Domestic Cricket Director Haroonur Rasheed told the committee that domestic cricket was restructured and now 16 regional cricket associations would be replaced with six cricket associations.

He added that under the new structure city cricket associations had been made independent.

Rasheed said that as per the new structure Balochistan Cricket Association would be represented by 13 cities.

Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) secretary while briefing the panel said that after the passage of 18th constitutional amendment sports were now a provincial subject, and prior to the amendment, the ministry was looking into the matters but now the ministry just provided suitable atmosphere to the provincial sports bodies for the fine tuning of raw talent in any sports.

Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Fahmeeda Mirza while briefing the panel said that improving the standards of various sports was need of the hour; saying to compete on the global level, Pakistan needed to bring drastic improvements in all the departments from infrastructure to coaching.

She said that every aspect must be considered, while uplifting the sports in the less developed areas but unfortunately in the post 18th amendment-era provinces were not spending the mandatory 10 percent of the National Finance Commission (NFC) award on the uplift of the less-developed areas.

Mirza maintained that sports federations had become independent organizations, which had been occupied by “mafias" and in the post-18 amendment era those “mafias" had caused serious damage to every sport.

She said that concerned provincial departments must be made accountable and held answerable as over the past decade as to what they had done for the improvement of sports in their jurisdictions with regard to the less development areas.

Senator Usman Kakar said the panel had recommended to the provincial governments to establish sports academies in Peshawar and Quetta but as yet no progress had been made in that regard.

The IPC Minister said that as a result of “incompetence" of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) the country's football team failed to participate in the SAAF games as well as the national games.

The committee chairperson directed the relevant officials of the Pakistan Football Association to provide full record of the past five years' of monetary funding from the FIFA.

The panel was informed by the officials of the IPC that the Football Association over the past five years even did not share the financial records with auditors, therefore financial and performance audit of the association had not yet been completed.

The officials said that now the football association was facing serious problems in getting fresh funding from the FIFA.

The committee was informed by the PCB officials that Akbar Bugti Cricket Stadium, Quetta and Arabab Niaz Cricket Stadium, Peshawar were in the process of renovation; both the stadiums would host the PSL matches.

The committee also directed the IPC ministry and other concerned quarters related to sports to strictly follow in selection of the teams, saying observing merit was the only option to compete at the global level in all the sports.
