Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan is to be placed on the Exit Control List [Post Updated #367]

Is this possible? Has the country literally gone to the dogs?

Is Shehbaz Sharif's gov this incompetent?

Punjab Inspector General Dr Usman Anwar told the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday that there was no trace of anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan — whose whereabouts remain unknown since his arrest at Sialkot airport on May 11 — at any police department across the country.

The senior official made the remarks as the LHC heard a plea seeking Imran’s recovery. At the previous hearing, the LHC had again directed Punjab police to recover and present the anchorperson. However, police failed to present Imran before the court during today’s hearing.

Imran was among the individuals apprehended in the wake of the protests that erupted following the arrest of the PTI chairman.

Later, his lawyer told Dawn.com that a writ petition was filed on May 12 over the anchorperson’s arrest and the LHC directed the attorney general to present him before the court the same day. But, after its orders were not followed, Sialkot police were given a 48-hour deadline to recover Imran.

PML-N thuggery reaching new heights now.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice on Monday warned authorities that the court would not "spare anyone" should any harm be caused to missing anchor person Imran Riaz Khan.

The remarks came as the judge expressed his dismay over Punjab Inspector General Dr Usman Anwar's admission before CJ Muhammad Ameer Bhatti's court that he was "clueless" of the whereabouts of the anchorperson.

The IG appeared before the LHC today after the 48-hour deadline granted by the court to present Khan expired.

The journalist, who is a staunch and vocal supporter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his policies, was arrested by the police on May 11 from Sialkot Airport.

The government had swung into action and initiated a crackdown against PTI supporters after the former premier's arrest from the premises of the Islamabad High Court on May 9 sparked widespread protests and rioting.

The anchor was reportedly arrested for allegedly inciting violence during clashes between security forces and PTI supporters.

On May 12, the LHC ordered the IG prisons to present the journalist in court on the same day. The IG, however, told the court that the jail authorities had already released Khan.

The LHC, frustrated with the lack of answers from Sialkot’s district police officer (DPO) in locating Khan, had summoned the IGP to help locate him.

PTI chief suspects anchorperson Imran Riaz ‘tortured’

PTI chief Imran Khan has suspected that anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan was tortured in custody.

“I fear that he has been tortured so much that they are waiting for his injuries to heal so he can be presented in court.”

No journalists harmed under PDM govt, claims minister as anchorperson Imran Riaz remains missing

Ene*rgy Minister Khurram Dastgir, while speaking to the foreign press, claimed that no journalists had been harmed since the current government took over.

“I am delighted to note that during this government’s term, which began in April 2022, no journalist has been shot at in Islamabad like they did a while ago, no one has been picked up, no one has been beaten in their houses,” stated Dastgir.

The minister made the claim despite anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan’s whereabouts being unknown almost two weeks after his arrest.

Dastagir also justified the government’s mass arrests in the wake of May 9 riots, saying that the way to deal with a large scale insurrection was to cast a large net and the innocent people will then eventually be let go.

“While it is difficult to identify the perpetrators from the onlookers, we expect that this process of filtering the criminals from the onlookers will be swiftly made and they will be let go,” stated the minister.

Imran Riaz’s case ‘an enforced disappearance’: Amnesty

Amnesty International has called for the immediate recovery of anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan, whose whereabouts have remained unknown since May 11.

In a statement issued today, the human rights watchdog said: “Alarmingly, Imran Riaz Khan, a prominent journalist known for his support of the PTI was arrested at the Sialkot airport on 11 May and has not been heard from since.

“Despite court orders, police have failed to produce him and his fate and whereabouts remain unknown. On 22 May, the police told the Lahore High Court that there is no trace of him in any police department in the province.”

It stated these events constitute “an enforced disappearance” under international human rights law.

“Punishing dissenting voices using enforced disappearance has been a worrying trend in Pakistan for many years and must be ended.”

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed “all the agencies” to work together to find anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan — whose whereabouts remain unknown since his arrest at the Sialkot airport on May 11 — and produce him in the court by Tuesday (May 30).

The LHC’s directive was issued in a written order following yesterday’s hearing during which Lahore police Deputy Inspector General (Investigation) Kamran Adil told the high court that both the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI) had said that Khan was not in their custody.

In the order issued today, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the court observed that a report was submitted to it on behalf of the interior ministry secretary that “stipulates denial of arrest/detention of the missing person by the proceedings on behalf of the Ministry of Defence”.

The order further stated that no one had attended court proceedings on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and “no report pertaining to steps taken by the agencies working under their control” sought by the court in an order dated May 22, 2023 was found among documents submitted to it by police.

Imran calls for contempt against police officials not following court orders

PTI Chairman Imran Khan has called for contempt proceedings against police officials who are not following court orders such as producing anchorperson Imran Riaz.

“So we know there is some law in the country. Will the powerful not be punished if they don’t follow the law because they are part of the government?”

Journalist Sami Abraham returns home after 6 days

Senior journalist Sami Abraham, who had gone missing on May 24, has returned.

Dawn News TV reporter Shakeel Qarrar also confirmed the development.

Abraham was reportedly taken away by unidentified men in Islamabad last week, according to family, who claimed that there was no information about his whereabouts.

Ali Raza, the brother of Abraham, had subsequently filed a complaint of abduction at Aabpara Police Station.

In a tweet, Abraham expressed gratitude to God.

Really concerned about Imran Riaz. Any news?

They are now claiming he has been taken to Afghanistan. RSF the free journalist organisation claim he has been murdered according to their sources. Adil raja claims he was alive on the 19th of May but after that he thinks he may have passed away. Either way I don't hhink we will ever see him again

The liberals will forget him and go back to their aurat marches while praising Bilawal. And some posters on here wil say he deserved it and laugh.

That is actually very depressing!

Unfortunately I agree. I think he died in custody so they are using the Afghanistan angle maybe to pin it on the Taliban. Usually the people abducted are released by now so this is not looking good.

I think we will probably hear in two years time that he was killed in Afghanistan and the world would have already moved on.

ISLAMABAD -- Several prominent public figures in Britain have urged Pakistan to release the brother of a human rights lawyer who served as an adviser to ousted former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The appeal from former U.K. Cabinet ministers, senior law officers, renowned journalists and legal rights organizations was made on Wednesday evening. It comes after this week's arrest of Murad Akbar, the brother of attorney Shahzad Akbar.

The lawyer, who is currently not in Pakistan, days ago tweeted that his brother was taken by security forces who raided his house. Pakistani authorities have neither confirmed nor denied that Murad Akbar was in their custody.

“We call on Pakistani authorities to immediately release Murad Akbar, who we believe is arbitrarily detained and at risk of torture, disappearance and death,” said the joint statement from Britain.

They said Murad Akbar has not been charged with any crime and “is a very vulnerable individual, who was under his family’s care after undergoing mental health issues for which he is receiving psychiatric treatment.”

His brother, Shahzad Akbar, is a renowned human rights defender and served as an adviser to Khan before the former cricket star turned Islamist politician was ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament last year.

Khan himself was detained last month, sparking violent protests. Since then, police have detained thousands of Khan's followers for alleged involvement in the deadly turmoil. However, it was unclear on what charges the lawyer's brother was detained.

On Thursday, a court in the eastern city of Lahore ordered the release of an unspecified number of Khan's supporters taken into custody under a law in Pakistan that allows police to detain anyone for a month without an explanation. The ruling followed petition from several detainees, including senior leaders from Khan’s opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

It was unclear how many detainees would be affected by the decision or when they would be freed.

LHC directs working group to utilise all available resources to find anchorperson Imran Riaz

The Lahore High Court has directed a working group, constituted on its orders to find anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan — whose whereabouts remain unknown since his arrest on May 11 — to utilise all available resources to “effect the recovery of the missing person, namely Muhammad Imran Riaz”.

In its written order, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the court also mentions it is “not satisfied with the performance” of the working group.

The court has fixed the next hearing of the case on June 6.

There is growing noise in western media now on Imran Riaz Khan's disappearance however Pakistan establishment unfortunately have quite a thick skin so no sort of words of wisdom will lead to any introspection.

The only factor that can stop this madness is when general public and external consumers start boycotting the monetary business channels of wider establishment locally and internationally. Once the establishment suffers a dent in their business model they will retreat quite swiftly as they are in this power game mainly for money so it will hurt where it matters the most for them.

‘Hang me, I taught my children to speak the truth,’ says Imran Riaz’s father

In a video shared on PTI’s official Twitter account, anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan’s father said, “It is my fault … I taught my children to always speak the truth … hang me.”

The remarks come as the whereabouts of the journalist remain unknown since his arrest on May 11.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) was informed on Tuesday by the Punjab government that efforts to find anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan, whose whereabouts remain unknown since his arrest on May 11, were under way as his lawyer contended that their patience was “wearing thin”.

The remarks came as the LHC resumed hearing a plea seeking to find the anchorperson, who was among the individuals apprehended in the wake of protests that erupted in the country after the arrest of PTI chairman Imran Khan.

Police had admitted to having arrested the anchorperson from Sialkot airport and shifting him to prison. They added that he was released after the government withdrew his detention orders and since then, his whereabouts remain unknown.

A first information report (FIR) was registered with Civil Lines police on May 16 on the complaint of the anchorperson’s father, Muhammad Riaz.

The FIR was registered against “unidentified persons” and police officials for allegedly kidnapping Imran, invoking Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

At the previous hearing, Punjab Inspector General Dr Usman Anwar had told the LHC that phone numbers which had been traced back to Afghanistan were involved in the case.

Meanwhile, a special working group of the Punjab police on Monday held a meeting to review the progress of all the police units, including the Counter Terrorism Department, for the recovery of the missing anchorperson.

An official was also quoted as saying that the working group was also in contact with the Ministry of Defence to exchange the information on Riaz.

At the outset of today’s hearing, Punjab Advocate General Shan Gul told the court that efforts were under way to locate the missing anchorperson.

He said that the Punjab police chief had asked him to assist in the case. He told the court that Imran’s father had been asked to become a part of the special working group that had been formed.

“There is no doubt that Imran Riaz is a renowned journalist,” he said. Gul also said that the defence ministry had information regarding the case and sought permission from the court to share it.

Meanwhile, the anchorperson’s lawyer told the court that his side’s patience was “wearing thin”.

“I fear no one except God […] You may say what you wish to say, don’t worry about me,” the LHC CJ told the lawyer.

He subsequently directed Imran’s father to contact the Punjab police working group regarding his concerns and adjourned the hearing till next week.

Law enforcement agencies and Punjab Inspector General Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar failed to produce missing journalist Imran Riaz Khan before the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday.

LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti adjourned the proceedings till next week and directed Khan’s father to express his concerns before the working committee.

During today’s proceedings, IGP Anwar informed the court that all efforts were being made in collaboration with law enforcement agencies on the case. He further said that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was contacted for identifying those who took Khan away.

The Lahore High Court on Monday adjourned a petition for the recovery of “missing” anchorperson Imran Riaz as a counsel for his father expressed hope for a “positive development” within days.

Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti resumed hearing of the petition. Advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq appeared on behalf of petitioner Muhammad Riaz.

Asked about the progress in the case, the counsel said there had been some positive development in the case during the last few days and it is being expected that the anchorperson would be safely recovered within the next few days.

At this, the chief justice adjourned further hearing till July 5.

During a previous hearing, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar had told the court that all the law enforcement agencies had been working jointly and the special working group of the Punjab police held its meetings to review the progress of all police units, including the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), for the recovery of the missing anchorperson, known for his pro-PTI stance.

The police admitted to have arrested Riaz on May 11 from Sialkot airport and shifting him to jail.

They claimed that the whereabouts of the anchorperson were unknown since his release from the jail following the withdrawal of his detention order by the government.

Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar on Wednesday told a court hearing a plea to locate anchorperson Imran Riaz that police would deliver “good news” in the next few days, following which his request for more time to find the journalist was accepted.

The journalist’s father also filed a plea in the Lahore High Court for his recovery.

LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti took up the plea today and was informed by the Punjab IG that “positive progress” had been made in the case.

“We will give good news in the next 10 to 15 days,” he said, urging the court to give them more time to find Riaz.

“You want more time?” asked Justice Bhatti.

“Give us 10 more days, and we will deliver good news,” replied IG Anwar.

At that, the judge remarked, “There should be some progress as well.”

The court eventually granted police time till September 13 to find Riaz.

The LHC also requested the request by the petitioner’s lawyer for a meeting with the Punjab IG and directed the official to meet Riaz’s father and legal team at 5pm today.

“The level of my patience has reached to the brim, it is contempt of the court order,” Chief Justice LHC said.

“Our patience has also ended”, petitioner’s lawyer told the court. “If you are giving them time, give them only 24 hours,” he said.

“Give me time for compliance of the court order,” IGP pleaded. “Mr. IG, we have given you as much time as five months,” chief justice said.

Punjab police chief had given 13 days for recovery of Imran Riaz in the previous hearing, and he had promised, “Good news in next 10 to 15 days.”

TV anchor Imran Riaz Khan ‘safe at home’ after missing for over 4 months
Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan — who had been missing for more than four months — is now “safe at home”, Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar confirmed to Dawn.com on Monday.

Sialkot District Police Officer (DPO) Hassan Iqbal and Riaz’s lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq, also confirmed the development to Dawn.com.

Riaz — a YouTuber and television anchor — was arrested two days after violent protests broke out across the country following PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9.

He was last known to be taken to Cantt police station after his arrest and later to the Sialkot prison. On May 15, a law officer told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that the anchorperson was released from jail after taking an undertaking in writing.

On September 20, the LHC had given the Punjab police chief a “last opportunity” to recover Riaz by September 26. Subsequently, the adjourned hearing will take place tomorrow.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, the Sialkot police said, “Journalist/anchor Mr Imran Riaz Khan has been safely recovered. He is now with his family.”

Meanwhile, his lawyer Ashfaq, also in a post on X said, “By God’s special blessing, grace, and mercy, I have brought back my prince.
It took a lot of time due to the pile of difficulties, the last limit of understanding of the matter, a weak judiciary, and the current ineffective public constitution and legal helplessness,” he said.

The lawyer added, “Despite the unspeakable circumstances, Allah Almighty showed us this best day. Only limitless gratitude right now.”

IRK looks in a very poor way after his kidnapping by thugs that masquerade as our army Generals. These criminals will pay a price for the murders of Arshad Sharif, Zille Shah and this brutality towards IRK and PTI workers. PK was going along nicely with the economy growing, currency stable and then the coup by criminals by the Generals and the mafia. ‘I was a living corpse’: Journalist Imran Riaz Khan on his disappearance

“I thought it was the end. I was a living corpse when I first met you. I had been in far worst condition,” said journalist Imran Riaz Khan on Sunday as he appeared for a first-ever interview on lawyer Mian Ali Ashfaq’s YouTube channel Cross Examination.

Khan reached home in September after he went missing for four months. He was arrested from Sialkot airport on May 11 as he tried to leave the country

Responding to a question regarding his arrest and prolonged disappearance, he said that he had no idea that his disappearance will prolong as he surrendered at the Sialkot airport on May 11.

“I thought it is a normal routine. I had no idea that it will prolong,” he said as he apologised for stammering during the interview.

“What I was saying could be taken as a difference of opinion. Anyone can do that. It does not mean I should be treated as an enemy of this country,” he stated.

He expressed remorse for believing that the “missing persons” were mostly terrorists and their disappearance was justified.

“A perception was made about missing persons and on occasions, I felt that it was justified. I regret for thinking that it was in the interest of the state. I apologise for that,” he added.

On judiciary’s role in his case, Khan said that he was surprised by the role of lower courts that continuously followed his case.

“My perception of the lower courts was different before this. These courts passed verdicts on difficult cases in a couple of days,” he added.

Talking about the current political environment, he said that the multiple arrests of women party workers were setting a pattern in the country.

“It is being done for the first time that women are being booked in multiple cases and kept in jails for long terms. When something like this happen to PPP and PML-N in future, no one will bother,” Khan added.

On future plans, he said that he is not thinking specific about anything for now. “When I start working, I will talk on the story of that day.”

His crime was to speak up against criminals ruling PK. Pakistans media is totally state controlled, all the channels are totally reliant on govt for funding.

Verdict reserved on anchorperson’s plea

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday told the Lahore High Court that the name of anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan had been placed in the Passport Control List (PCL) by the directorate of immigration and passports, Islamabad.

A report filed by the FIA director legal further stated that the name of the anchorperson had been included in the PCL on the recommendation of the agency’s cybercrime wing following registration of an FIR.

It said there was a strong apprehension that the petitioner would flee the country in order to avoid prosecution in the case registered against him.

The report said the petitioner filed the petition without availing the first remedy available in the law by filing an appeal before a review committee.

The FIA said previously the name of the petitioner was put on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL), however, later his name was removed.

After going through the agency’s report, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan reserved his verdict on the petition of the anchorperson challenging the prohibition on his travel abroad.

Petitioner’s counsel Azhar Siddique argued that there was no case registered against his client but the government unlawfully included his name in the stop list.

He said the government’s action violated the fundamental rights of the petitioner.

He said the government could not restrict citizens’ free movement without a legal justification.

The lawyer requested the court to order removal of the petitioner’s name from the stop list and permit him to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.

Pakistan is not a democracy let's not kid ourselves. Regardless of the type of rule, the standards have fallen below almost every country in the world including Afghanistan. I pray to Allah the Almighty sincerely to provide protection and safety to Honourable Justice Faez Isa. Ya Allah protect this man who had the courage to stand up for the justice of a weak and helpless person!

Speechless. This country is getting worse to live in day by day. Never have I ever thought of leaving this country for once but the situation is getting worse here. Judicial system to blame for all this mess.

Would you still be speechless if the CSJ is killed by some random religious fanatic on Blasphemy charges? Who would have blood on their hands if that’s the case?

the only thing I will say is this, you stepped up and arrested this guy which is deserved

Now step up and arrest Maulana Fazl ul Rehman and Muhammad Ali Khan

Sick and tired of Ahmadis continuously being made a punching bag for no reason in your political wars!

Firstly it's not an arrestation, it's more like kidnapping. Secondly why was this deserved? What has he done to be caught?

It was not an abduction. There was an FIR registered against him yesterday morning before he was arrested in his home.

You should read up on the case and understand why he has been arrested correctly for his highly irresponsible actions on Twitter, spreading misinformation that could put the life of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in danger. This isn’t about politics, this is playing with fire.

Well, what I have heard is that he only posted a video from Geo News and a picture from Jang news. So they should have been arrested first lol? And please share the posts from IRK where he is spreading misinformation.

Excellent developments.

Continue to peddle around fake news, create lies about the state and endanger minorities? Well than consequences must be faced. Should have learned his lesson the first two times he was behind bars. Let's hope threes a charm

Request to PTI supporters:

If you want to malign the CJ of the Supreme Court for the troubles he has caused you, by all means do so whilst remaining in the realm of politics. Go ahead and expose him for his political affiliations, properties, off shore accounts or whatever…

But DO NOT accuse him of Blasphemy and put his life in serious danger in this pursuit of bringing him down! DO NOT misuse the emotional power of the religious fanatics of Pakistan to put his life in danger, especially for something that he has not even done! He has not committed any kind of blasphemy! He has followed the law of Pakistan when providing bail to a minority member who had already served more time in custody than the actual punishment for the supposed crime he had committed! He has NOT allowed Ahmadis to spread and preach their religion! He has NOT disrespected the Prophet s.a, in fact he paid homage to him by declaring him as a ‘Mercy upon Mankind’, not just Muslims!

I beg you all to please look at this case by putting aside your political hatred for this man, do not repeat the mistake made in the Salman Taseer case!

Because the authorities are well aware of what he is up to. He isn’t as innocent as ‘just retweeting something’. Why have PTI senior officials gone along and accused the CJ of blasphemy indirectly?? For God’s sake man, try and understand that his actions are highly irresponsible!
