Shadab Khan deserves a Test debut in Jamaica

He is not just a limited over bowler to save runs, he is a wicket taker and will be a nightmare for West Indian batsmen in test where he will be even more aggressive. Deserves a debut at Jamaica test.
 
He can only debut if he's played at 7 and is part of a 3-man spin attack.

Going with 2 leggies and 2 pacers in a 4-man attack is risky.

Amir, Wahab, Asghar, Yasir, Shadab is what I'd go far.
 
Depends on the pitch in Jamaica and how he fares for the remaining T20s and ODIs.
 
The guy has only ever taken 24 First Class wickets.

Do we know that he knows how to get people out when they don't have to score fast?

And if he plays, it's instead of Yasir Shah. Ask Wasim Akram what it's like being in a two man pace attack in the West Indies. By the time of the second Test in Port of Spain in 1988 Wasim was literally bowling off a 3 step run up.
 
2 leg spinners is an over-kill.


Shadab only plays if Shah isn't playing. Shah will have to be on top of his game in the first couple of matches otherwise he might find himself benched for Shadab.


I have full faith in Shah to rip through the Windies though.

He's only played 4 first class games that's why he has 24 wickets.

I thought you would be advocating for his selection. As he has the potential to meet your requirements for a spin bowler. So i expected you to say put him instead of Yasir.

He could average 35 with the bat and about 25 or under with the ball and his age is under 30. This is perfect for a team you would like to build. :)

Shah has been ordinary since Mushi has left the team management. He's also gained quite a bit of weight.

I agree, selectors should wait few more days and if he continued his good form in coming matches, he should be in test team.

Yasir and Shadab are both leggies but different kind of leggie, both can be included at the same time. Hope Misbah takes bold step and will go by 5 batsmen, Saf and three spinners and 2 fastmen. There is no need for 6 batsmen against WI.

1-Azhar 2-Sami 3-Babar 4-Misbah 5-YK 6-Saf 7-Shadab 8-Shah 9-Wahab 10-Amir 11- Asghar ( or Imad at 7 for Asghar ). If Shafiq cannot be dropped then go with 4 bowlers , Amir, Wahab, Shadab and Yasir.

I'm afraid of Misbah destroying him, to be honest. His captaincy of Yasir in Australia was the worst that I have seen in 42 years of watching cricket.

If he's good enough, pick him - but instead of Yasir Shah.

I agree with your point though. I would only tolerate two players over 30 in the team. Even without Misbah and Younis, you already have five in Azhar, Shafiq, Yasir, Sarfraz and Wahab.
 
Asghar also deserves a chance. We have suddenly got a lot of good spinners on the books. Amazing what a few months can do in cricket.

I would go with 3 man pace attack with 1 spinner and 1 AR.

It is with between Imad and Shadab for the AR spot. Asghar can't bat but should play in ODIs.

Whoever does better between Imad and Shadad in the ODI series.
 
Leggies do better in Tests ( Imran Tahir is an exception ) where they enjoy more aggressive field and not worried about run rate.

Shadab is ahead of Imad as test spinner. Shadad can play as bowling allrounder at 7. Misbah seems to be misfit here as we cannot drop Shafiq in tests after his good performance down under.

There is a massive difference between Test cricket in Asia and outside Asia. Especially on modern flat wickets which don't crack up outside Asia.

In Asia, you basically need two spinners of whom one is a real international-class spinner (Ashwin, Swann et al) and the other is just relentlessly accurate (Jadeja, Panesar).

But outside Asia in the first three innings out of four in the match a spinner is just a batsman who rolls his arm over to give the four fast bowlers a rest. Worse, it you pick two spinners your fast bowlers get a shorter rest between overs, which is why 2 quicks + 2 spinners is a disaster outside Asia.

I would think that for the future in Tests outside Asia, Pakistan should look at Shadab Khan as a guy to be the sole spinner outside Asia, batting at Number 8, with Sarfraz Ahmed at Number 6, a fast bowling all-rounder at Number 7 and Mohammad Amir as the third seamer batting as a bowling all-rounder at Number 9. (I think Mohammad Amir is too short to be a specialist bowler in modern Test cricket).

6. Sarfraz Ahmed (c/wk)
7. Hammad Azam (or Aamer Yamin) (fourth quick)
8. Shadab Khan
9. Mohammad Amir (third quick)
10. Genuine quick faster than 145, no shorter than 6 foot 2.
11. Genuinely tall quick, minimum height 6 foot 5, minimum speed 135.

That's a balanced team.

On what basis should Wahab play? He leaks runs and releases all the pressure Amir creates up front. I'd be in favor of recalling Junaid to partner with Amir. We saw against the Aussies, these two had a nice chemistry and it will only get better.

Yeah play him all the formats to ruin his career. None of the players should not play more than 2 formats

Fully agree, and I'd go for the same.

Not interested in what India did before or that we can have one leggies too many etc.

Yasir, Shadab, and Asghar will rip WI apart. Our pacers won't have to bowl more than 25 overs each (at most) per Test.

Three spinners turning the ball in the same direction is a recipe for disaster though.

And two of them would be debutants on top of that.

Misbah will most likely want to recreate the "Shah + Babar" duo by bringing in Asghar.

So a t20 debut vs a team who are historically garbage at playing spin and only 4 first class games = get him in the test team asap!

Guyana is spin friendly and I think it's the ground where Bishoo did us. So yea as a 2nd option he wouldn't be bad. BUT I would rather have a different type of spinner if Yasir Shah is playing.

Knowing Misbah Hafeez will open the batting for his off-spin (third spinner) and Yasir will play. So it's either another leggie (Shadab) or a different spinner in Asgher Ali.

In my opinion Asghar has proven more and will be fatal on this spin ground. I would only fit in Shadab if Babar Azam opens the batting and everyone moves a spot up. Then you would have Shadab at 7 and a third decent spinner.

It's possible, but then BABAR AZAM needs to open the batting alongside Azhar Ali. Misbah is a conservative guy and won't change Babar's spot just to include Shadab.

OP please stop over-hyping Shadab.

We saw what has happened with Umar Akmal.

He was supposedly- "a mix between Sachin Tendulkar and Javed Miandad." And was well on his way to being Pakistan's best batsman of all time. Well too bad. That wasn't true and didn't happen and it 99% won't ever happen.

Shadab is a good player and a great talent; But he is really young especially for a spinner. Needs to keep his head and feet on the ground. He definitely has world class potential, but he should continue to work hard on his game.
 
I wouldn't debut him as yet. There's no need to rush him into the team. He is a gem. We have history of ruining very good talents. First play him in LOIs. Let him find his feet first at the international level. Personally I would debut him after both Misbah and Younis retire and he has played 25+ LOIs.

Would like to have this team in BD and SL:.

1 Azhar.
2 Sami.
3 Babar.
4 Sohail.
5 Shafiq.
6 Sarfaraz*.
7 Shadab.
8 Agha Salman.
9 Asghar/ Yasir.
10 Amir.
11 Some new fast bowler.
 
Looks a bit like Imran Tahir, both overuse the googly sometimes making it way too obvious. That's why Tahir isn't the same bowler in tests that he is in the shorter format. Shadab has time to learn to be more patient and stick to probing the batsmen with his stock delivery.

A little premature for a test call up considering the team's current ace match-winner would have to be benched in his place. Shadab should be played in all the Loi matches and if he can show that he can be a more than decent bat, of which we saw glimpses of in the PSL, he should be played at the bowling all-rounder position in tests.

Ideally we need a fast-bowling all-rounder but there is a dearth of quality one's in Pakistan. Hammad, Yamin, and the rest of the lot are over-hyped while Amad Butt is yet to prove himself. Instead of playing a fast-bowling all-rounder we can play 3 frontline pacers, along with a front-line spinner and a spinning all-rounder.

Imad could have taken this role but he just can't spin the ball, and that is just not good enough for test quality. They tried out Nawaz last year in the 3 tests against the West Indies but he didn't really show himself to be a long-term prospect in the format. No innings of worth by him in the series, and no real contribution with the ball either. I hope Nawaz can get better and he can compete with Shadab for the all-rounders spot in tests. But, Shadab looks the real deal, just needs to a bit more patient and not overuse the googly.

This is the best possible eleven for test but knowing Misbah, he will not make the bold decision to have Babar open and play with 5 batsmen. Atlough against WI, this will be more than enough batting.

Misbah won't be around for a large part of Shadabs potential test career.

Yes those 5 are the experienced players, than the rest of the team is made up of younger players . Ideally under the age of 30.

On the basis of previous performance. He was our best bowler in AUS.

Pak fans get too much hyped after one match... pls leave shadab khan for LOIs... he will be the trump card for the CT and 2019CWC if he continues to bowl like this...Tests will be an overkill for him, either he will get injured or will lose his effectiveness to take wickets in LOIs... When they expose him too much like playing him in tests then it will become easy for the top teams to analyse his bowling and decode the googly or wrong-un or whatever u call them...

The real test for shadab will come soon, as top teams will find a way to decode his googly and try to pick it from his hand if they can...

Its a good start by Shadab and his age is only 1 T20. Let him play other matches and ODI's then check his fitness level. Can he exert test match pressure is the question. Fair enough two leg spinners in a match looks odd but if he proves himself a match winner then no problem on my side. We had also played with all left arm bowling attack. Remember please.
 
you see how people set him up to 'fail' now ?

he can take 2-10 off 4 next game and they'll say oh he's going backwards

take 1-15 off 4 in the next game and oh it was just a flash in the pan

take 0-20 in the last T20 and obvious he should go back to Domestic

always excuses to keep talent out in favour of TTFs

I'd prefer Asghar over him,honestly.He's a leggie and we already have one in Yasir.A spin combo of Yasir-Asghar would be better.If Asghar doesn't play I expect Zulfi Baba to get back into the team.
 
No just one good performance and people made him Maseeha. Let him play for at least a year or two then talk about test call. We already have one leggie also

Should Shadab Khan be fast tracked into the Test team or is it too early?

Shadab looking like a million dollars out there looks like taking a wicket every time he bowls.

Yasir will be a big threat on WI Pitches but he hasnt really had a quality second spinner to help him like Ajmal had Rehman in 2011-2012. Yasir and Shadab will cause WI batting all sorts of problems and it will be a good aggressive option too.

Zulfi is finished and id rather give someone like Shadab a go.
