Shah Mehmood Qureshi - PTI stalwart?

We all know that, it is just Mamoon Sharif being difficult because he is part of the status quo.

Not just him. I have heard this from alot of people who criticize Imran Khan for bringing in electables, and they bring up statements he made like 20 years ago about brining in clean people.

The thing is Imran Khan admitted later on that he needs the electables, and there are people of various shades of grey, and the choice is not between a crook and a person with a clean record.

And if he stayed in the PPP then you wouldnt have said a word never mind a thread. For you they turn bad when they go to the PTI, for us the question is whether they have an issues with corruption. For example, if AA came to the PTI tomorrow, I would accept him for his intellect.

If he stayed in PPP, you would be criticizing him for scamming the poor people of Multan. Now that he has joined the tabdeeli circus, all is forgiven.

As far as issues with corruption are concerned, why did he serve PPP for 18 years? Where was his conscience? Do you want a beneficiary of corruption like him in PTI?

Imran Khan should not have done “me me me” and made tall claims for 20+ years if he didn’t have the means to act on those systems.

He should have realized long ago that he was handicapped by the system, but back then his arrogance and delusion were so intense that he thought he would change the system upside down when he becomes the PM.

Now that the reality has dawned on him, his supporters want to justify him by stating that he didn’t have a choice. Too bad but he should have realized this much earlier.

So he will be criticized rightfully and this will prove to be the end of this fake messiah who has pulled off the greatest scam in our history.

I would criticise anyone that stays in the PPP since BB took over. Its a party that has no ideology, unless you care to share with us. The reason he served in the PPP was that it was a 2 party system and it was either them or the Nooras or both. I am not sure why that's difficult for you to get head around. As soon as he had a choice, he left.

IK was right and you are bitter. IK has both the crooked parties on the run, both are family businesses and both are run by crooks and murderers.
It is clear from your posts that you have even less to offer than they do. All you do is to repeat Noora propaganda. Let's actually hear some ideas from you. I have shown you up as a self confessed stupid and ignorant person. You don't even have the courage to condemn the murder of innocent people and you think you have something on IK. Lol

So Saint SMQ had to put with corruption of Zardari with a heavy heart because he didn’t have a choice. He was an honest man who wanted to serve the country but was forced to serve the corrupt Bhutto family until he found his messiah Imran.

Was this story published in Niazi Times. It is quite gripping.

Well did he have a choice in the party system. Tell me who it was, before Kaptaan, we had Nooras and PPP for nearly 40 years. Its interesting that he resigned over Raymond Davis on principle. As a supporter of Diesel, principle is not a word you would understand. Why did you support Diesel?

Imran doesn’t have the crooks on the run. He has welcomed the crooks in his party and has convinced his followers that they have now changed.

The result of that is PTI has now become a part of jokers where there is no coordination of chemistry from top to bottom. You have a delusional self proclaimed messiah at the top and a bunch of opportunities frauds at the top.

PTI will vanish into thin air once Imran is gone and this tabdeeli circus is over.

So you think Shah Mehmood Qureshi resigned from PPP “on principle” rather than because he saw a brighter future for himself in PTI?

Your naivety can be best described as cute.

Both, he fell with them and looked for other options and joined the PTI. I am not sure why it's difficult for you to understand. It's politics, it happens. What doesn't happen and should never happen is murdering people like journalists. Do you think killing journalists is justified?

When u have a foreign minister like mahmood qureshi then what good is the government
The recent bomb blasts in rawalpindi and the unrest in quetta says it all

The only good bit of governance is how inclusive lahore has become to shrines

Thats probably the best thing of PTI, that its next leader will not be a family member of Imran Khan. I mean how humiliating for a person who is part of a political party to know that he has zero chance of ever being leader, that he/she needs to polish boots of people who cant even speak the language of the country they reside in and who have zero political experience.

That alone is a huge change for Pakistan.

The reality dawned on him before 2018 election. And he gave interviews on why he needed these electables. So people who supported him in the 2018 election should have understood this reality. And if they did not, and thought he was still the idealistic person he was in the early 90's, well they weren't paying attention.

I agree, its a monumental change from the inherited family businesses. Billo takes over, and then passes onto David James etc
SMQ has done a good job as Foreign Minister but for me Assad Umar will be the PM of PK after IK.

You are talking nonsense as usual.

This does not need any context. He is ‘blessing’ women who are bowing down to him and then cutting their hair with a scissor. What context are you looking for here?

He is scamming the poor people of his district. Why is he performing this ritual will happen if he doesn’t perform it?

You dont speak for those people or can know what their experiences are. You are not obliged to go see him.

We all can decide what is fake or what is not fake. As some people you know may feel you are fake or I am fake. This is a small issue, what is far more important is his role in the government and the security of Pakistan , something he wont compromise but something you want compromised, so who is the real patriot or the fake patriot?

Yes, and that is not the point at all. Genuine peers who have made great contributions to the spread of Islam in the subcontinent (and probably converted your ancestors) never called themselves peers.

It was a title given to them by their students who learned about Islam from them.

Peer is a Persian word that basically means an elder or a mentor.

Your understanding that there is no such thing as peer in Islam is incorrect. There is significant emphasis on guidance and teaching in Islam because not every person has the capability to learn and understand the Quran and the hadees.

I challenge you to a debate based on the Quran and authentic hadiths. What people believe is not what Islam believes most of the time.

Saints were very important in spreading Islam to SC I think everyone agrees Yes

Saint tradition was in every country throughout Muslim world from africa, europe to dagestan
Yes

If something that is not mentioned in quran or hadith that doesn't mean it cannot exist

Tableegi jamaat does tableegh and that's what sufi's and peers did during those times
Know if I think you are a enlightent person I can call you my peer basically a teacher
What's the big deal?

I don't need to go look up quran and hadith so I can make someone my teacher in spiritual and wordly affairs

Lol. I bet 99% of these peers can't even read a page of quran with proper tajweed.

You can call them what you want, spritual leaders, learned people, pious people etc . I agree many pious people changed and I have respect for them. Im just saying it's not an Islamic concept, the word saint is a christian term which means such people had powers, could perform miracles. Nobody can perform miracles , this is clear in Islam, unless you are a prophet of God.

Agree, too many out there using this as a money making job.

From a hanbali perspective and I'm guessing you're a salafi you should look into khawaja abdullah ansari and abdul qadir jilani

Also look into the debates between ibn tayniyyah and ibn attaullah iskander and also al dhahabi

From a south Asian perspective Islam would be akbars interpretation if it hadn't been for sirhindi
And the Delhi sultanate would have just been turkic slave drivers if it hadnt been for nizamuddin
The chisti order was where akbar went when he wanted a son which might explain the famous picture where jahangir ignores King James
Khawaja moinuddin chisti was also responsible for aurangzeb

The ottomans were famous for being naqshabandis
The dagestanis too
Libyans main resistance came via the senussi order

Usman Dan fodio was responsible for the sokoto caliphate in Nigeria and again he was highly influenced by the qadiri order

Imam ghazali defeated the mutazillites as did the ashari and maturidis

Although Imran Khan repeatedly assured the nation that he will select his team on merit, but it is no secret that you do not need any merit to serve in Imran Khan’s government. It is basically a competition between who can swoon the hardest on Imran Khan.

We have seen a remarkable assortment of charlatans serve as ministers in this government, but this is something far more sinister.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi studied in one of the most prestigious schools in Pakistan as well as Cambridge which requires no introduction.

However, in spite of receiving high quality education, he continues to scam the poor people of Multan who have no choice but recognize him as a pir who will “bless” his devotees.

What on earth is he doing anyway? He seems to be “blessing” women by patting their heads and reciting some spell and then cuts some hair with a scissor.

Should a fraud like him serve as one of the most prominent ministers in the country?

Will anyone bother to ask what was he doing and why was he doing it, and what would happen to his poor devotees if he doesn’t do what he is doing?

Apologists will say that this is his personal matter and has nothing to do with his credentials as a foreign minister. However, what does this say about his character and mentality?

Naya Pakistan is a gift that keeps on giving. This is Imran Khan’s “merit”.

This is a shocking video.

What is even more appalling is that I have read that even while serving as Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi would shorten his overseas visits to ensure that he is back in Multan for the annual 'Urs' proceedings where he could mingle with his followers.

I am generally supportive of whoever is in office. I respect the electoral process, with all its major flaws. So I support PM Imran Khan and I would be just as supportive if a Bhutto or a Sharif is holding office. However, such kinds of behavior from people holding the highest offices of the state is completely unacceptable.

I call on every PTI supporter here to criticize such actions without diverting the topic. Call a spade a spade.

He is the Minister of Foreign Affairs and has done a good job. What his his personal religious views , attending gatherings in the past got to do with his performance in government, which he was voted for, unless you think PTI supporters voted him to be a Pir?

If it is true that his role as a pir is interrupting his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs, this is a serious problem.

Not sure if you've been following the news this year, he has done a great job, better than most who have been in his position throughout Pakistani history. So we can conclude it hasnt.

Anti PTI and anti Pakistan people would come up with such an OP, for a man who has shown a good level of compentacy in historic difficult year for Pakistan.

I don't think it's fair to call anyone anti-Pakistan.

There is a historical process by which some pirs of Pakistan have gained political power. It is good to be informed of this.

Furthermore, there is also strong evidence to suggest that these politically active pir families have been associated with negative development outcomes for the societies in which they belong to, particularly in terms of literacy rates.

This is the historical background which we cannot ignore.

And going back to this issue, if there is even one instance where he has had to cut an official foreign trip short in order to attend a pir-related gathering, this is an unacceptable level of conflict of interest. I have read this claim being made in an academic paper, but I am not sure if it is true. Yet, I don't have reason to doubt the truth of this claim.

Genuine peers who have made great contributions to the spread of Islam in the subcontinent

It is also well documented that Pirs - “genuine” or otherwise - were crucial in generating popular support for Pakistan during the 1940s in Sindh, Punjab and KP. In the apt words of historian David Gilmartin, they occupied a special place by virtue of “their long-standing position at the hinge of universal ideals and everyday politics.” Without their support, the Muslim League may not have achieved their breakthrough in the 1946 elections; electoral success which proved a vital step in the creation of Pakistan.

Interestingly in that 1946 election, however, the Qureshis supported the Unionists. Their great Multan rivals, the Gilanis, supported the Muslim League. Factional differences between the families is likely to have played some role in determining party preferences. As has been noted here, the Qureshis were sajjada nishins of the Suhrawardy shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya. The Gilanis were sajjada nishins of the Qadri shrine of Musa Pak Shaheed. The families had fought for primacy in local politics during the 1920s and 1930s.

In the 1970 elections it was the Qureshi network that found themselves on the winning side. In the Punjab few of the landed gentry in fact supported Bhutto’s PPP before the election. One of the exceptions was Sadiq Hussain Qureshi. Political scientist, Phillip Jones, wrote “the Qureshis had become aware of the strong shift of opinion toward the PPP. They were reportedly shaken when some 100,000 people went out to the airport to greet Bhutto on his arrival in 28 July to begin a tour of Multan and Muzaffargarh Districts.” After Bhutto’s success in the election many landed gentry, in time honoured fashion, jumped onto the bandwagon of the winners. The list of gentry included the Gilanis.

To finish in the current century, Yousuf Raza Gilani became Prime Minister in 2008 and Shah Mahmood Qureshi the Foreign Minister. Perhaps because he was not comfortable with serving in a Cabinet led by a Gilani, Qureshi eventually joined the PTI in 2011.

You dont speak for those people or can know what their experiences are. You are not obliged to go see him.

These people are his serfs. He is a feudal lord. He sits cross-legged with an obnoxious turban on his head and gives them blessings.

These poor people have no choice but obey him. They are his subjects. If I was unlucky to be born as his serf in Multan, I would have no choice but to serve this fake as well.

We all can decide what is fake or what is not fake. As some people you know may feel you are fake or I am fake. This is a small issue, what is far more important is his role in the government and the security of Pakistan , something he wont compromise but something you want compromised, so who is the real patriot or the fake patriot?

As someone who worships Imran, you can do the following:

1. Defend this fraud who is scamming his serfs with his fake pir gimmick.

2. Resort to ad hominem.

3. Downplay the role of pirs/saints in the spread of Islam in the subcontinent, without whose efforts you would probably be a Hindu or a Sikh today.

I challenge you to a debate based on the Quran and authentic hadiths. What people believe is not what Islam believes most of the time.

The fact that you have put up this “challenge” shows that after all this discourse, you are still clueless on what a pir is. You are confused because you associate pirs with fake ones like our foreign minister.

So let me help you again. A true pir is nothing but a godly man who devotes his life to glorifying God and spreading His word. He does not (or rarely does) indulge in worldly pleasures.

A true pir does not claim to have any special or mystic powers, nor does he claim to have a special connection with God.

He is simply a fan of faith who spreads the word of God.

You will not find reference to saints in Quran and Hadees because the saints at the time were the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) who were tasked to spread the word of God.

After the death of the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions, the task of spreading the word of God and inviting people to Islam was delegated to the Ummah.

Among the ummah, certain individuals devoted themselves to spreading the word of God. Eventually, these people gained followers and influenced a lot of people to convert to Islam.

Unfortunately because of our subcontinent culture, the followers of these saints eventually became devotees and their graves were turned into shrines, where these devotees would go (and still go) and prostrate themselves and pray, which is shirk and absolutely not allowed in Islam.

These saints would probably be rolling in their graves to see what these people are doing.

The problem is that you associate pirs with these fake babas who claim to have healing powers and mystical knowledge, but the pits that I mentioned earlier in this thread, the likes of Bulleh Shah, Bahuddin Zakriya, Ahmad Ghazali, Nizamuddin Auliya, Amir Khusro, Hujwiri etc. were scholars with deep knowledge of the Quran and Hadees and never claimed to have special powers.

In fact, they didn’t even call themselves pirs. This title was bestowed on them by their followers.

The foreign minister is nothing but the puppet of the military establishment and at best a civilian mouthpiece who follows the script that is given by the military.

Along with Ministry of Defense, it is the most powerless ministry in the country.

Even you could have served as foreign minister last year and nothing would have changed.

Interesting

I know the hayats were a very influential sufi family as documented in veer zaara
The makhdooms vis a vis yousef raza was another I was aware of as the PPP main Muslim links that I know of are through the makhdooms

Ive never heard of this qureshi links with the suharwardis, I though that was more Bangladeshi

Insightful as usual. I was looking forward to your contribution because your knowledge of the history of subcontinent is unmatched on this forum.

I would like to point out that the role of saints/pirs in the modern history of subcontinent is often lost because of the emphasis on political movements and political leaders.

As a result, people are often ignorant of the crucial roles the likes of Sirhindi, Shah Wali Ullah, Syed Barelvi, Shariat Ullah and movements like Nadva tul Ulema played in establishing and propagating Muslim idealism and nationalism.

Without the efforts of these individuals as well as Sir Syed Ahmad who aimed to balance both religious teachings and western education, there probably would be no Pakistan today.

Unfortunately, the rise of fake pirs have ruined the perception of what a pir is or is supposed to be, and thus the contributions of these scholars have often been lost in time.

He has worked hard for the security of Pakistan in world diplomacy, you on the other hand are on the radar of those who protect Pakistan, as you have openly made treasounous statements. I wouldn't be surprised if you're picked up one day.

ISLAMABAD: PTI may consider holding parleys with the incumbent government on electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections if the government announces date for general elections, PTI Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Thursday, as reported by The News.

The statement was given during a media talk outside the Election Commission of Pakistan after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.

"PTI demands immediate election to drive the country out of a state of unrest and economic crisis," Qureshi said.

He said that the incumbent government will continue to work for a month but the future course of action lies in uncertainty while the rupee depreciates by another Rs7 against the dollar and the loans burden grows by Rs1,000 billion.

The politician said that the decline in the value of local currency would further add to inflation.

He went on to say that there was a downturn in the stock market in a month that the stock market shed 3,000 points. He said that subsidy on electricity and oil would be withdrawn as per the understanding with IMF and this would further add to economic woes, as both diesel and petrol would become dearer.

Qureshi condemns appointment of trade officer in New Delhi
The former foreign minister claimed the cabinet has appointed a trade officer in New Delhi, as it is making efforts for trade with India. He asked if the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s (IOJ&K) status has been restored to its August 5, 2019 position.

Qureshi said that PTI government had suspended trade with India, after its illegal and flagrant violations of the UN resolutions unilaterally stripped IOJ&K of its special status.

“The nation questions if India has also stopped the blatant human rights violations in IOJ&K and if not, then whose game you are playing and whom you are trying to appease,” he retorted while addressing Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

He also censured the incumbent government for not issuing a single statement against Israel and its forces for repeatedly desecrating Qibla-e-Awwal (Al Aqsa) and beating up the worshipers, using baton, rubber bullets and grenades. He pointed out that there is a national level bipartisan approach on Kashmir and Palestine and yet FM Bilawal is keeping mum.

Qureshi challenges FM Bilawal to name who threatened him
Referring to Bilawal’s recent statement in the National Assembly that a PTI federal minister had threatened that martial law would be imposed if they did not listen to their government, Qureshi challenged him to name the minister if he had enough moral courage while he and his father were part of those who had plunged Pakistan into unrest. He again asked Bilawal if he would, during his US visit, meet the World Bank President over the Indus Basin Treaty with reference to water issues with India, which is unmoved to resume talks with Pakistan while it is our right to call upon New Delhi to share the design of its new hydro-power project at the Chenab River.

“In view of the serious water issues, confronting South Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, why are you silent?” he wondered.

About the Punjab situation, Qureshi contended that presently there is a constitutional crisis in the province, the governor has been ousted and the one who was nominated has refused to take oath, case of dissident members of the Punjab PTI is pending.

“If our dissident MPAs are de-seated, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz will not be able to take the vote of confidence.”

He noted presently there is no cabinet in Punjab and so far, whatever decisions Hamza Shehbaz has made have no legal status. If the provincial bureaucracy is implementing those orders, it is transgressing the legal and constitutional ambit, he added.

'Pakistan in hysterical state'
Qureshi said that in this situation, the country is facing a hysterical state, and political instability as hundreds of thousand people are expressing solidarity with Imran Khan and turning up at his public meetings everywhere and this shows people have not recognised the incumbent government and have rejected it. He emphasised that in the given situation, the only and better solution is elections. He noted that they have already cooperated on electoral reforms and they are ready to cooperate with the government again.

Meeting with CEC Raja
The PTI leader said to peacefully protest is their right and if hurdles are created in this way, they will move the judiciary and also go to the people. He said that he met CEC Raja, presented the party’s point of view before him, which is our duty, and added the ECP and political parties have an "unbreakable relationship."

“To understand the legal complexities and take guidance from him is necessary for me,” he said about his meeting with the CEC.

The meeting took place hours after PTI’s Faisal Vawda filed a reference against ECP Sindh member. Vawda and senior party leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said the other day that they would start a legal struggle against the electoral body and bring references against the CEC Raja and two other ECP members.

Qureshi said he talked to the Commission regarding two more cases, one of which was about Yusuf Raza Gilani, about whom the ECP had given its judgment and PTI had accepted it, wherein Gilani was given a clean chit while his son Ali Haider Gilani was found involved in corrupt practices. The ECP had ordered the district election commission to file a criminal case against him. The order was given on April 29 and was sent to the commissioner concerned the same day but the order could not be implemented to date. He insisted being a citizen, it is his right to ask why the ECP order is not being implemented and if their legal wing shows complacency, there should be action against it.

Qureshi said the case of PTI’s dissident MPA, Salman Naeem, was filed in the ECP and he was de-seated and later the Lahore High Court, Multan Bench, also upheld the ECP decision and they expected the Supreme Court to also uphold it. He emphasised they wanted all parties should be treated equally in all cases, including the foreign funding case, and there should be no discrimination against any party. “We expect the Election Commission will not disappoint us,” he said.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi's lawyer told reporters on Monday that he was not being allowed by the authorities to meet with his client in jail.

The lawyer, Taimur Malik, maintained that "not even his daughter is being allowed to see him [Qureshi[".

"Nothing can be said about the undertaking unless a meeting is held [with the PTI leader]," he said, adding that the legal team would once again try to visit him in jail today.

"We can only submit an undertaking after taking directions from him," Malik stressed.

Notably, the PTI leader remains in police custody five days after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) termed his arrest illegal and issued orders for his release.

Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb had heard the PTI leader's plea against his arrest under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Act (3MPO) last week.

The court declared the arrest null and void and instructed the concerned authorities to ensure his release after he signs an undertaking.

Despite relief from the courts, however, there appears to be no respite in the crackdown on PTI leaders.

Their arrests followed violent protests that erupted following PTI chief Imran Khan's arrest, where sensitive state and military institutions were targeted.

I think he is quite loyal and will remain steadfast.

PDM is a false alliance. When they inevitably go at each others throats they ( hopefully mainly Ganjas family) will collapse like a pack of cards.

I think the intelligent players of PTI will know this.

Upon release from the Adiala Jail after almost a month of incarceration, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday said that he would meet party chief Imran Khan tomorrow (Wednesday) and share his analysis of the current political situation in the country.

Qureshi was arrested last month by the Islamabad police on multiple charges, including “inciting violent protests”, following PTI chief Imran Khan’s arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9.

On May 18, the Islamabad High Court had ordered the former foreign minister’s release. However, his release was delayed due to his apparent reluctance to provide an undertaking to refrain from engaging in “unruly” protests.

When Qureshi was finally set free on May 23, he was again taken into custody by Punjab police from outside Adiala Jail after his detention orders were issued by the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner.

Rumor's are he is going to present a face saving solution to IK from the establishment, i.e. take a step back from the leadership of the party and go outside Pakistan for a bit under the pretext of health issues and let people like SMQ, Asad Umar and Pervez Elahi handle party affairs.

Minus one formula will end up being successful.

Qureshi terms upcoming polls ‘mock elections’

Former foreign minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senior Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has termed the upcoming polls “mock elections”, saying that the exercise is a waste of money

“Democracy is being strangled and the Constitution is being mocked,” Qureshi said while talking to the media at the Adiala Jail on Saturday.

The former minister appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan and the chief election commissioner to consider the PTI’s demand of providing a level-playing field.

Targeting the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Qureshi said that the Pakistan Peoples Party chairman was supporting the PTI's stand that the Avenfield apartments in London were built with corruption money.

On the other hand, Qureshi accused the PPP of using the resources of the Sindh local government for the upcoming general elections, adding that PML-N’s Nehal Hashmi and the Grand Democratic Alliance were saying the same.

On the issue of level-playing field, Qureshi said eight people were arrested during a raid at his house in Multan and the election material of his daughter and son was taken away.

“What is happening against us is not a level-playing field. Where will we take our complaint? From where will we get justice?”

Qureshi said, “Even the British and Ranjit Singh had not crossed the threshold of my 125-year-old house.”

On the “injustice being meted out to the PTI”, Qureshi said veteran politician Javed Hashmi's house was attacked and “our meeting was stopped”.

Comparing the treatment with that being provided to other political parties, the PTI senior vice chairman said the PML-N and the PPP had been given open permission to hold meetings.

“What kind of election is this?” he asked, adding that the nation and the world would not accept the elections in such an environment as “our fundamental rights are being violated”.

Lahore ATC remands PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi for 9 more days in May 9 cases

A Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended incarcerated PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s physical remand by nine days in eight cases related to the violence that erupted in the country after party founder Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9 last year, it emerged on Tuesday.

Qureshi’s lawyer advocate Rana Mudassar told Dawn.com that the remand was granted on extension requests by the police for eight cases.

Countrywide protests erupted on May 9 last year after the paramilitary Rangers whisked away Imran from the Islamabad High Court in a corruption case.

While the protests were underway, social media was flooded with footage of rioting and vandalism at various spots, including the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence and General Headquarters, the army’s head of office in Rawalpindi.

Qureshi in December was implicated in at least 12 different cases registered by the Rawalpindi district police in connection with the May 9 violence. Qureshi was granted bail in 13 cases in February. He is currently serving his sentence in the Adiala Jail in the cipher case.

ATC Judge Khalid Arshad presided over the hearing on Monday. The court order dated May 27, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, said Qureshi was produced via video link for the case on Friday when the court had initially granted police a three-day remand which lapsed on Sunday.

It added that the police requested an extension in Qureshi’s physical remand by 30 days in Monday’s hearing with the investigation officer (IO) saying that the USB containing “provoking speech” by the PTI leader was sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency while photogrammetry and voice matching tests were still pending.

He contended that the police required an extension to recover the mobile phone used by Qureshi to allegedly post inciting messages on X and other social media platforms.

Qureshi’s lawyer advocate Rana Mudassar opposed the request and said that the former foreign minister was falsely implicated in the case to delay his release from Adiala Jail.

He said that Qureshi was not present in Lahore on the day of the incident, and neither any video or USB was available to support the IO’s claims.

As per the court order, Qureshi himself asserted that he was implicated in the case after a year to “humiliate him” and that he was innocent in the matter.

According to the order, two prosecution witnesses had implicated Qureshi on May 12 last year in the planning, abetment and instigation of the incident’s occurrence.

The court order said the photogrammetry and voice matching tests were “essential to ascertain the credibility” of the evidence in the case and thus granted a further physical remand of nine days to the police, adding that the investigation must not be interrupted in the interest of justice.

The hearing was adjourned till June 5.

Shah Mahmod Qureshi believes political stability requires recognition of Imran Khan's role

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) central leader, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, believes that political stability in the country is unattainable without recognising the political significance of PTI founder, Imran Khan.

During an informal conversation with journalists at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Qureshi reflected on his 40-year political career, claiming that he had never faced any legal charges until the past year, during which dozens of cases have been filed against him.

Responding to a question, Qureshi said that, "Regardless of differing opinions, Imran Khan is a political reality in Pakistan and acknowledging this is crucial for the country's political stability."

The former caretaker of Sufi saint Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Suharwardi's shrine then reffered to the case of Nawab Akbar Bugti, labeling the treatment metted to the feudal lord as 'unjust' and said that Bugti was not anti-Pakistan.

He called for an end to the practice of labeling individuals as traitors, highlighting that such accusations have been carelessly made for the past 75 years.

Talking about Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Qureshi described him as a 'true democrat,' saying that anyone with democratic and constitutional beliefs cannot be considered a traitor.

He further stated that achieving peace in Balochistan requires a path through dialogue and negotiation.

'Visit my jail too if you have time', PTI's Shah Mahmood Qureshi tells party leadership

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in a sarcastic remark on Saturday, urged the party’s "free" leadership to consider visiting him at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, "if they can find the time", The News reported.

Speaking to the media at Rawalpindi’s anti-terrorism court on Saturday, Mahmood reaffirmed his loyalty to PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, who also remains incarcerated at Rawalpindi's Adiala jail — but emphasised the need for the party’s leadership to seek his input on political matters.

"I am standing where I was standing before. Earlier, I was in Adiala in the cipher case. Allah made me successful in that case. Now, I am imprisoned in Kot Lakhpat Jail on false charges,” he explained.

Directing his comments at PTI leaders such as Barrister Gohar, Salman Akram Raja, Omar Ayub, and Sheikh Waqas Akram, Mahmood called for greater engagement with jailed party members.

In a sarcastic manner, he quipped that the party’s "free" leadership should visit him at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore "if they can spare some time."

"We have been incarcerated for one-and-a-half years, including Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Mian Mehmoodur Rashid, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema. If time permits the party leadership, they may take our input. It is quite possible that we may present something to them," he added.

In an informal chat with reporters outside an anti-terrorism court, Mahmood's daughter Meher Bano said her father had given a message to the Pakistani people that the call of November 24 was important.

Mahmood’s son and member of the National Assembly, Zain Qureshi, said he had been silent for a long time because he was a party worker; the party had issued him a show-cause notice, and he had also responded to it.

"I have resigned from the party post. My case is before the party, and I hope for the best," he added.

Zain said he had attended the party meeting called in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently and met with party members.

Lahore ATC indicts Shah Mahmood Qureshi, 20 others in May 9 case

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has formally indicted PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi and 20 other accused in the case related to the planning of the May 9 incidents.

The hearing took place in Kot Lakhpat Jail, where the court addressed the cases related to the incidents that occurred on May 9.

During the proceedings, ATC framed charges against Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Ejaz Chaudhry, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, and other accused individuals in the case registered at Race Course Police Station. The court has also summoned witnesses for the next hearing.

On May 9 last year, following the arrest of Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case, PTI organised nationwide protests.

Subsequently, 1,900 individuals involved in clashes, vandalism, and arson across the country were arrested, and cases were registered against Imran Khan, party leaders, and workers.

PTI's Qureshi calls on govt to 'foster environment' for talks

After multiple failed attempts to resolve political turmoil through negotiations between the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party's incarcerated leader, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, urged the government to create a "conducive environment" for talks.

"A conducive environment for negotiations can only emerge if the government changes its tone," said Qureshi during an informal media talk at an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Friday. He is currently incarcerated in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

He also called for justice as he has been behind bars for one-and-a-half years, saying: "If I am guilty, punish me... if I am innocent, grant me relief."

Qureshi, the former foreign minister, criticised the government's approach to handling political dissent and called for dialogue. "The PTI is a major political party, and banning it would be foolish," he said.

He further demanded a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9, 2023, ensuring accountability for those responsible.

During the protests on May 9, miscreants targeted the civil and military installations including — Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military termed May 9 "Black Day" and decided to try the PTI protesters under the Army Act.

PTI founder Imran Khan, however, blames “agencies' men” for arson and shooting in some areas during the May 9 violent protests.

Qureshi also called for relief for other detained party leaders, including Yasmin Rashid and Ijaz Chaudhry.

Qureshi's statement came a day after the embattled party’s chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, blamed the incumbent government for the failure of the talks after both sides "established initial contacts" to settle political disputes.

The PTI chief said that the biggest reason for the talks failure was Khan's rearrest after he secured bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in new Toshakhana case last month.

Speaking on Geo News programme “Capital Talk”, Gohar, however, said that "there is still time" for matters to be resolved amicably via talks and dismissed the government’s allegations against ex-PM Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi for becoming a hurdle in reaching a "deal".

The legal woes of the Imran Khan-founded party have increased after its "final call" protest in Islamabad last week as several PTI leaders, including jailed ex-premier, were booked in new cases.

The government and the major opposition party traded blames for the violence during the much-hyped protest that left four law enforcers dead in Islamabad last month.

On the other hand, the former ruling party has since claimed that at least 12 of its workers were killed and 1,000 were arrested.

However, the government has categorically denied using live ammunition against the protesters.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led federal government has time and again asked the PTI to "sit across the table and talk", but its founder turned the offer, stating that the party will only hold talks with those wielding real power.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi questions govt’s existence as ‘silent majority suffers’

Enumerating a host of problems being faced by the country’s people, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has questioned the existence of the federal government and asked whether “the silent majority should suffer, as me and my colleagues are suffering in jails”.

Mr Qureshi has asked these questions in a hand-written letter titled “Where is the federal government?”, provided to the media here on Monday.

Listing the agitations surfacing in different parts of the country, the former foreign minister says the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) was organising jirgas in the merged districts of erstwhile FATA, Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) was holding public meetings and dharnas at different locations in Balochistan, farmer organisations convening seminars calling for protests over water rights of Sindh, people in the riverine belt of South Punjab and upper Sindh complaining of abductions for ransom by organised criminal gangs and Punjabis mostly from south Punjab, after verification, were being killed in Balochistan.

Though the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) on Sunday withdrew its call for the Jan 23 long march after the AJK government revoked a controversial ordinance, Mr Qureshi had written in his letter that the JKJAAC was protesting against the Presidential Ordinance and gathering at main entry points and planning to march on Muzaffarabad.

The incarcerated PTI leader lamented that educated and skilled young Pakistanis were desperately looking for opportunities to leave the country for greener pastures. He said the freelancers were worried after losing international clients. He lamented that established business houses were setting up offices in Dubai and elsewhere, as they are reluctant to invest in Pakistan.

Mr Qureshi said the farmers in Punjab were unsure of planting wheat, without announcement of a support price and a procurement plan of the government, with rising unemployment and poverty. “People of Pakistan are in need of a government to address these challenges instead of blaming the PTI government and its leadership,” he asserted.

He claimed that the economic challenges and structural issues the nation was confronted with today, did not surface in the four years of the PTI government. “Perhaps four decades of decline, neglect and mismanagement has brought us to this sad situation,” Mr Qureshi observed.

The PTI vice-chairman said the government’s legitimacy was being challenged by Pakistanis living here, as well as those sending billions of dollars through remittances from abroad, calling for fixing the situation.

“Is any non-partisan organisation willing to seek the opinion of ordinary citizens on the independence, impartiality and credibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan — an autonomous constitutional institution,” he asked. “Some of us are silently suffering in jails, should the silent majority suffer as well?” he asked.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi tells PPP to take stand on canals or quit coalition

The incarcerated PTI vice-chairman, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, has advised the PPP to either demand a Council of Common Interest (CCI) meeting or quit the ruling coalition in the Centre over its objections to proposed canals to irrigate land in Punjab.

The PPP, which is in alliance with the PML-N in the federal government, has expressed serious reservations over a plan to build new canals on the Indus River for farming in Punjab’s Cholistan region.

The PPP leaders have also raised these concerns in talks with PML-N, saying the project would cut the province’s water share and render its lands “completely barren”.

On Friday, PML-N leader and Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal dismissed PPP’s concerns over the project as “baseless debate”.

In a handwritten letter seen by Dawn, Mr Qureshi said the PPP should demand an immediate meeting of the CCI, which has representatives from all four provinces.

The CCI meeting — which should take place every three months as per the Constitution — hasn’t been held for almost a year, Mr Qureshi said, adding that in this scenario, the demand for a meeting would be “fair and within the ambit of the Constitution”.

Water, being a very “sensitive issue,” required consensus amongst the federating units as per the Constitution, Mr Qureshi said.

“Why the PPP is quiet over [this issue] being debated in Sindh,” Mr Qureshi stated.

“People of Sindh want to know the correct position [of PPP]. They are interested in the whole truth,” the PTI leader stated.

Mr Qureshi added that the PPP should quit the coalition if it cannot take a stand on this issue.

He, however, downplayed the difference between PPP and PML-N, calling it “nothing more than a “noora kushti”.

According to Mr Qureshi, the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), a group of political parties from Sindh, was also accusing the PPP of surrendering the province’s water rights.

He said if the proposed canals are built, Balochistan, being a lower riparian province would suffer the most.

The federal government’s approval for six canals over on the River Indus will be detrimental to Sindh’s agriculture and needed to be revisited, the PTI leader warned.

The GDA, as per Mr Qureshi, has claimed the federal government went ahead with the plan after approval from President Asif Zardari.

The jailed PTI leader also commented on PPP’s gripe over not being consulted by the PML-N on major government decisions.

Recently, the PPP took exception to the establishment of the Pakistan Maritime and Seaport Authority (PMSA) by the federal government, calling it a “unilateral” decision.

Mr Qureshi said the PPP criticised the federal government for failing to consult before forming the new body and asserted the federal government’s survival hinges on its support.

The PTI vice-chairman, while citing media reports, stated that the Sindh government deferred plans to allot 14,000 acres of land to an army-backed company for corporate farming.

However, it was also reported that an agreement had been signed by the Sindh government with Green Corporate Initiative (Pvt) Ltd, and the provincial Sindh government had consented to allot 52,000 acres of state land for corporate farming in six districts of Sindh.

‘New PPP’ in the making with fresh faces, policies: Qureshi

In a handwritten letter from Kot Lakhpat jail on Monday, incarcerated vice chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that a new PPP was in the making, with the shift of its leadership from the Bhuttos to the Zardaris.

Mr Qureshi, who quit the PPP over a decade ago, said Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had succeeded Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

“This change is also reflected in the faces representing and speaking for the new PPP,” the PTI vice chairman said, adding that Sharjeel Memon was the new face while faces like Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Farhatullah Babar and Taj Haider moved to the back benches.

“The change is clearly visible in the policies and the approach of the party too… The romance is almost over, as Jeeay Bhutto today in fact is Jeeay Zardari,” he said.

Mr Qureshi said the PPP that evolved consensus over the 1973 Constitution had comfortably voted for “undermining judiciary’s independence and the concept of trichotomy of powers”. He said the PPP that always upheld freedom of speech also voted for amendments to Peca Act, 2016.

Criticising the PPP for compromising on its core values, the PTI vice chairman said the voice for social democracy had turned into support for hybrid democracy.

He believed this shift had led to a decline in PPP’s popularity, with the party losing touch with its traditional supporters. “The Bhutto’s vision has been replaced by Zardari’s pragmatism. Bhutto lovers in the party are on the decline and Zardari admirers are on the rise,” he said.

He asserted that the political engineers were working round-the-clock to give final touches to the new PPP, though Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab sensed the change and distanced themselves from the party in 2013 and 2018.

“The two-coloured PTI flag has replaced the tri-coloured flag of PPP in KP and Punjab,” he said, adding that the PTI flag was also fluttering in urban Karachi and with the construction of six new canals over river Indus under the stewardship of the Presidency, the thirst for change in rural Sindh would only increase.

Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) recorded testimonies of four witnesses in a case against Mr Qureshi and other PTI leaders over provocative speeches and attacks at Sherpao Bridge during the May 9 riots.

Judge Arshad Javed conducted the hearing inside Kot Lakhpat jail where the prosecution presented its witnesses.

In all, statements of 22 witnesses have been recorded in the case till date.

The judge directed the prosecution to present more witnesses on Feb 6.

Jailed Qureshi calls for 'national consensus' after PTI-govt talks debacle

Following the failure of negotiations between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the government, incarcerated PTI senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has called for "national consensus" to steer country out of crisis.

"At the moment, we need a national agenda and consensus on it...no individual has the capacity to to deal with the challenges," said the former foreign minister.

The former ruling party ended its negotiations with the PML-N-led government last month over the government's failure to constitute judicial commissions on events that transpired on May 9, 2023, and November 24-27 as stipulated in its written charter of demands.

The dialogue between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government and the PTI commenced in late December after months of heightened political tensions.

Despite the two sides holding three rounds of negotiations on December 27, 2024, January 2, 2025, and January 16, the dialogue process hit a snag after the PTI refused to continue with the talks, saying that the decision to quit talks could only be reviewed following the formation of judicial commissions.

Talking to reporters today in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail, Qureshi urged all parties to agree on an "independent and autonomous" election commission, saying that no one can be disadvantaged by an independent ECP, judiciary and media.

The incarcerated senior leader of PTI also lambasted the Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) top brass, saying that President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto would be remembered as individuals who "tarnished the image of the Constitution".

Referring to the passage of the contentious Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025, he said that the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) damaged democracy in this country. "They have stifled freedom of expression in the country by amending the Peca law."

In response to a question, Qureshi said people should not pin "unreasonable hopes" on United States President Donald Trump. "We can get released by pursuing our stance and cases," he maintained.

Responding to another question about his imprisonment, the former foreign minister said he was ready for "punishment" if PTI founder Imran Khan swore that he had any discussions with the latter on events related to May 9, 2023.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi hints at opposition’s grand alliance soon

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman and former foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Wednesday hinted at the formation of the opposition’s grand alliance soon.

In an informal conversation with the media at the Anti-Terrorism Court, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said major opposition parties are supporting PTI and hinted at formation of grand alliance soon.

Qureshi pointed out that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has distanced himself from his own government and is now standing with them.

He added that prominent political figures like Miftah Ismail and Mahmood Khan Achakzai are also aligned with their position.

Speaking about Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that the JUI-F leader is standing with their stance as well.

Commenting on a question regarding May 9 riots, Shah Mahmood Qureshi denied his involvement in the riots by swearing to God.

Regarding the founder of PTI, he mentioned that the letter from Imran Khan contains his opinions and suggestions.

Shah Mahmood reiterated that PTI does not require any deal and that they are committed to facing the law.

Earlier it was reported via sources that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is divided over its stance on relations with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

Sources said PTI is ‘divided’ into two factions over the recent ties with the JUI-F, which once was considered as major opponent party of PTI.

PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi moved to cardio institute due to heart pain

Former foreign minister and PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been moved from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday after he suffered heart pain, according to his lawyer.

Qureshi was indicted in July 2024 by an anti-terrorism court in a case pertaining to May 9 riots. Shadman police had registered a case against PTI leaders, including Qureshi, and activists on charges of attacking and burning the police station.

The same month he was transferred from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakpat on a police request. It had stated that frequent transportation of the PTI leader from Rawalpindi to Lahore was not feasible for the authorities as well as for the accused.

Speaking to Dawn.com today, Advocate Rana Mudassar, Qureshi’s lawyer, said the his client suffered heart pain early morning, after Fajr prayers. He underwent a medical assessment by prison doctors.

“He was shifted to the PIC by Rescue 1122 after his health failed to improve,” Mudassar said, adding that Qureshi was currently undergoing various tests at the hospital.

The PTI leader’s family had been informed about his condition, the lawyer added.
