New Delhi: Gataum Gambhir and Shahid Afridi share an intense rivalry against each other which dwells way too deep than just cricketing field.

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Gambhir was asked about his altercations with Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi and his answer was as candid as it can get.

Gambhir said, “Umar unki 28 saal kyu na hojaye, dimag unka 16 saal se bada hota hi nahi hai,” (Even if his age is 28 his brain will always be that of a 16-year-old). The former Indian opene meant that no matter what the age of his Pakistani counterpart is, he will always behave like a 16-year-old.

Gambhir was also asked questions about the ongoing India vs Australia series, especially the sledging incidents that have been making headlines.

From the DRS controversy to Ishant Sharma’s bizarre sledging attempt, the battle between the cricketers was not limited to just bat and ball. These instances have drawn criticism from experts around the world, but former Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir believes it is part of the game.

“It is fine to play hard and do whatever you can to upset the opposition till the time you don’t get personal. Whatever you do on the pitch, it should stay there and if that is the case, I don’t see any harm in sledging,” Gambhir told HT.

The battle lines were drawn pretty early in the India-Australia Test series when Aussie skipper Steve Smith gave his players the ‘green signal’ to sledge the India players. Since then, there has hardly been a day of cricket which did not witness a controversial incident and both sides have engaged in verbal duels over the course of the three Test matches played till now.

However, Gambhir thinks these incidents are bound to happen in a charged up series and said it makes the game more interesting for the spectators.

“Sledging is something that makes things interesting. Obviously, these are not robots playing the game, and when you are playing for your country and there are so many expectations on your shoulder, emotions can take over sometimes.”

The recently-concluded Ranchi Test was filled with impressive performances from both sides and now the two teams will head to Dharamsala for the series decider. Smith said in the post-match press conference that his team is the one which has the momentum going into the game, but Gambhir did not agree with the claim.

“India will surely start the match as favourities. They have played very good cricket in the last two Test matches and will be extremely confident going into the final encounter.”

However, he was quick to point out that it will be foolish to underestimate the Australians after their show in Ranchi, and believes that the visitors have already proved a lot of experts wrong with their performance.

“We should give credit to the Australian side which has played remarkably. Most players like Harbhajan (Singh) and Sourav (Ganguly) predicted a whitewash for India, but they have proved themselves brilliantly and with everything on the line, Australia will be a tricky opponent,” he added.

I think Gambhir is still reeling from whatever Afridi said on that fateful day.

I wish I could be so intense that I say something to someone and they are still burning 10 years after LMAO.

Feeling it still :AAG

Gambhir is so rattled by this incident from 10 years ago that he can't help but talk about it a few times every year....

Some inferiority complex.

gambhir Afridi ki galiyon ki gambhirta ko dil pay lay gaya :afridi thsi is what afridi can do to you

Why would you want somebody to be mad at you for 10 years?

Grudges are idiotic.

What wrong did Gambhir say? A lot of us already know it.

but ghambir will never forget what he received from AFRIDI.aFRIdi may be not mentally strong but ghambhir should not comment like this..he can surely say that no comment.

Did Gambo say it in a new interview?

If so, there was absolutely no need to do that when all has been said and done in the past. You had said what you wanted to say and Afridi had said what he wanted to say.

Why kick it up again now?

Pathetic.

Even gambhir is deceived by afridi's youthful looks. He thinks afridi is yet to turn 28 :yk

Afridi still has golden hair while gambhir needs hair planting, he is jealous of afridi's looks

that is what i said....and sensible indian fan is sensible here again...

Kafi Gambhir Insaan hi Yeh Gautam.

Afridi mus thave said something about Gautam's height. Never insult a man's height and that too right on his face. It will be AAG for ever.

Gambhir should focus on breaking into the team. Wont ever be half the player with half the fame, money or popularity Afridi had and still does.

While I find Gambhir to be an absolute tool I can only laugh at he had a great career for 3-4 years.

He wont be remembered as one of the greats because he didnt perform for long but in a 3-4 year period he won almost everything there was to win and played a key role

Still doesnt make him any less of a person with a massive chip on his shoulder

Gambhir wishes he was half the man, player or personality that Afridi is. Boom Boom will be remembered with love for years hence whereas Gambhir the Troll has no respect from anyone even in his own country, except from some of the cuttar Shiv Sena, Hindu Nationalist types.

Keep crying and burning over 'Fridi's attitude. He never gave a rat's tail for tools like you and he never will.

That said, Afridi needs to control himself and not turn this into a crap-fest.

This is one of the qualities I really like about you.

You know how to separate different issues and attack the areas where its needed.

Gambo the player scored in 2 frigging finals of 2 major tourneys. Was amazing in all formats for 3-4 years. He was as clutch as it gets. Him being a tool doesn't make him a lesser player.

Agree with Gambhir. It is just the way Afridi carries himself that has "immaturity" written all over.

Contrary to popular belief, India and Pakistan players get along very well. Of course, there are exceptions like Gautam Gambhir, who dare I say isn’t the friendliest. We are unlikely to be found together at a coffee shop anytime soon. We had a heated exchange on the field some years ago and it made headlines all over the world. While I have moved on in life as I feel these things are part and parcel of the game, Gautam for some reason can’t get over it. Good luck to him!

This will burnnn!!!

Though, i hate gautam, but he is right here. Afridi does behave like a 16 year old

I don't like Afridi much but Gambhir here is acting like a child. Can't get over a thing which happened 10 years ago.

its not about something that happened 10 years ago.

Read the statements afridi gives and the way he talks.

Yes Afridi is childish but why should Gambhir care? It's because of what happened.Thats why he's acting so miffed.

Well considering Afridi is still in his teens , his behaviour shouldn't be judged. Smh
