“I was just waiting and praying that I make it into the finals,” sprinter Shajar Abbas reflected on the historic moment when he became the first athlete from Pakistan to ever qualify for the Commonwealth Games 200m final in Birmingham on Friday.

The 22-year-old wants to win the medal to have a fairytale ending to his campaign at the 2022 edition of the games, which is also his debut at the event.

He clocked 20.89 seconds in the 200m race in semi-final 1 of the event and by reaching the final, he broke the 52-year-old record that was set by Pakistani sprinter John Permal at the 1970 Games.

The boy from a village in Pattoki, however, has more realistic view of the situation. He is not promising a medal, only wishing for one, however he is adamant that he will not leave the track without doing his best.

“I am very happy about the semifinal results,” Shajar told The Express Tribune after his qualification to the final. “It was unbelievable. I ran the best I could, and then I was just waiting for the rest of the semi-finals to end. I felt still. I was sitting and looking at the board.”

Shajar had finished on the third place in his semifinals out of nine sprinters.

Shajar ran in the first semifinal of the three. The top two finishers from each semi-final qualified directly to the final while two fastest runners besides the top ones made it to the final.

At first, Shajar thought he was out, but his 20.89 seconds was just enough to sail him through.

This is Shajar’s third international event. Earlier he won a 200m gold medal in Mashhad Iran, and later two medals in Kazakhstan, a 100m gold medal and 200m bronze.

But being at the Commonwealth Games has been different. The top athlete in the qualifying round is England’s Zharnel Hughes with a time of 20.32 seconds.

“I am just glad because I was also the first athlete to make it to the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games and now to be in the final means I am good and I can improve,” said Shajar.

But his biggest drawback, he feels is to not have his coach with him. After the semi-final, he again talked about how not being with a coach affected him.

He earnestly appealed to the government and the sports bodies to let his coach be with him in the international events next time.

“I won, but I really missed my coach Rana Sajjad. I feel if he was here with me, my timing could have been better. He was with me in the previous events, but here things are different. I do feel that I needed a little bit more direction in training after the semi-final. I was really not sure so I was looking at the board, a coach helps in so many ways,” said the fastest man of Pakistan.

He was not happy with his performance at the 100m event either, but 200m is his favourite race.

“I just want to tell the government, and I am new so I don’t know many people, but those who are at the top positions to help me. My request is to send my coach with me the next time," said Shajar.

He said that his coach talked to him after the semi-final and he was happy to see Shajar thrive in the games.

“He was very happy that his student, his player reached the final,” said Shajar.

Shajar wanted to be a cricketer but when his coach saw the speed he can muster during fast bowling, he suggested Shajar to pick athletics.

Shajar’s personal best has been 20.87 seconds, which he achieved in Almaty, Kazakhstan in June in his second international event. Shajar runs both 100m and 200m sprints.

Weather changes moves

Shajar said that one of the challenges he is facing is from the weather in Birmingham that is colder than that of Lahore.

“I really feel the weather is not helping me. I feel my body is not responding the way I want it to at time,” said Shajar.

There is also no physiotherapist for the sprinter. He was having a session with the Pakistan hockey team’s physiotherapist Adeel Akhtar.

“I don't have a physiotherapist, so I came here to the therapist for our hockey team. Now they are helping me, so I am sitting here, waiting for this to get done,” said Shajar on the night of his semifinal as he started to recuperate for the final.

Shajar is confident but cautious. He is exceptionally talented but humble and he is asking for prayers from all of Pakistan.

“I will do my best in the final. I am going to give my 100 percent there. That is all I can do right now. I need all the prayers. My request is that please pray for me,” said Shajar as he looks forward to the final, a historic one for Pakistan now because of his incredible feat.

Shajar Abbas broke his own record in 100m by clocking 10.25 seconds during the heats at the Islamic Solidarity Games

His previous best was 10.38 at Commonwealth Games.

He is very decent at best and if he can run under 10 seconds that will be brilliant achievement but it's very very difficult.

This is what good athletes do - they improve.

Yeah but you need the support.
The right coaches the right diet the support the money.

They can't develop if they are not provided these things.
My cousin was the fastest sprinter in our state but he couldn't develop further due to lack of all these things.

Natural talent can only take you this far.

I really hope he gets everything needed and he can certainly become very competitive at world events.

Pakistan’s fastest sprinter Shajar Abbas has broken his own record during the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey.

He clocked 10.25 seconds during the 100m heat on Monday, which was better than his previous best of 10.38 at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Abbas had touched down in Turkey only a few hours ago, which makes his feat even more commendable since he had very little recovery time.

He is also the first Pakistani sprinter ever to qualify for the final of the men’s 200m in the Commonwealth Games. Abbas finished in the last place, eighth, in the final on Saturday while clocking 21.16 seconds.

Earlier, Abbas had missed out on the 100m semi-finals by the barest of margins in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. He clocked 10.38 seconds and finished in fourth place in men’s 100m heat. The cut off time for the qualification, apart from the top two in each heat, was 10.37 seconds which meant that Abbas missed out by only 0.01 seconds.

It must be noted that Abbas was without his coach, Rana Sajjad, and physio during the Commonwealth Games and the Islamic Solidarity Games.

The Kasur-born won a gold medal during the 100m race in Qosanov Memorial Athletics Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, earlier this year. He also bagged a gold in the 200m race of the Imam Reza Athletics Championship in Iran in May.

Shajar Abbas and Abdul Mueed Baloch are in the semi-finals of 100m and 400m heats respectively, and are the major medal hopes for Pakistan in the Islamic Solidarity Games 2022.

With the success of the Pakistan athletes at this years CW games, I don’t think the time is far when a Pakistani sprinter does a 100m sprint in less than 10 seconds.

Athletics will gain so much exposure now considering the global respect the athletes receive. There will be stronger and better athletes coming through

It is actually so encouraging to see pakistanis taking up athletics and other sports.

Likes of arshad nadeem and Nooh butt performance bought so much happiness to see these guys putting in an epic display .

lets see if he is able to qualify for Olympics or not.

Arshad Nadeem is the real deal in athletics.

A Pakistan 100m or 200m matching speeds of Caribbean sprinters is gonna be tough. It is possibkle, we have seen Japanesse sprinters give competition.

I hope he does qualify for olympics

When Shajar Abbas qualified for the finals of the 200 meters in Commonwealth games, people have to realize this was a big deal not only was he the only Pakistani to make that final but also the only south asian

Breaking his own record at the islamic games 202w at Konya, hours after arriving shows he is a natural.

He will need a lot of support and training but he can do good things for Pakistan. Guys like him and Arshad Nadeem are a Gem for this nation

KARACHI: Pakistan's young sprinter Shajjar Abbas has created a new national record in 200m and qualified for the semi-finals by finishing first in his heats in the Islamic Solidarity Games 2022.

Abbas clocked 20.68 to surpass his previous best of 20.87, which he achieved during XXXII Qosanov Memorial in Almaty and manually recorded 20.7 by Liaquat Ali in the 2015 National Games.

World Athletics only recognizes automatically recorded timings.

Shajjar had earlier also created a national record of 100m by clocking 10.25 in Islamic Solidarity Games in less than a week after clocking 10.38 in Birmingham during Commonwealth Games.

The Pakistani athlete finished first in his heat, followed by his countryman Mueed Baloch who clocked his personal best at 21.28. His previous personal best was 21.41.

It is worth mentioning that this is Shajjar's 7th sprint in 9 days, and the top athlete has managed to improve his own record despite fatigue.

50th National Athletics Championship

In 200 metre race, Shajar Abbas won the gold medal in the men's category, while Tameen Khan secured the top position in the women's category.

The two sprinters also won gold medals in the 100m sprint and were named the fastest athletes in Pakistan.

In the men's events, Army won fourteen gold, eleven silver, and eight bronze medals to clinch the first position with 428 points.

Moreover, WAPDA won seven gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals.

This man has great potential and if he trains with some of the best trainers in the World, he can have many medals for Pakistan in some of the biggest events in the world.

The Asian games showed us our position in Athletics. It is our obsession with Cricket that does not allow other Sports to flourish among Pak people. We only care about a colonialist sport played by a handful of ex British colonies then world sports like Football, Boxing, Tennis, Golf, Commonwealth games and the Olympics even Snooker or Rugby. It is not due to a lack of talent rather a lack of funding and infrastructure that allows nothing else to develop other then the relatively undemanding game of Cricket.

Shajjar Abbas will feature in the World Indoor Athletics Championship which will be held in Glasgow from March 1-3. The athlete will participate in the 60-meter event of the competition.
