If he is selected on merit, (and I hope he is), then the entire selection team should be immediately fired!!
Is THIS what our "expert and specialists" selectors have filtered out from domestic talent for a TEST batsman? Seriously, a TEST player ??
I mean, it was OK if it was ODI or T20 but this third class batting standard to qualify TEST cricket ??? Unreal.
Actually, selectors also have their side of story. Don't think blaming entirely selection team is fair.
Once Shehzad was out, PAK had 4 options
1. The most logical one - open with Azhar, put Asad at 3 & debut Haris. But, I am sure 3 person didn't agree with that :
Azhar - he knew he was settled at 3 & if he opens & Asad performs at his No. 3, once Shehzad returns, since Hafeez had a great series, it 'll be Azhar under biggest threat, particularly if Haris also makes a decent contribution. Nothing wrong in that - Azhar isn't dumb like UAkmal that he 'll allow competition sneak into. Players 'll be possessive for their spot - it's the think tank to make the final call.
2. Go for a makeshift opener with Sarf & accommodate Haris. However, I am not in favor of opening with WK, neither other stakeholders, I believe. Also, never fix things, unless it's broken - Sarf is going through a dream run at 7, why disrupt that?
3. Debut Haris as opener - never 'll happen as long as Misbah & WY in charge. Haris bats at 3 in domestics, easily can open. But, this is where the fear factor comes - every PAK batman is afraid of new ball, even for the sake of their career. Amin doesn't like opening, even though that can give him a window, Umar doesn't open even in list A, Babar has moved to 4, though he was the best opener in world at U19 level, Haris 'll not take the chance to debut in Test & Azhar as well (though often he is coming inside 15 minutes).
4. Which the selectors did - choose a regular opener from the squad & as Taufique failed last time, they went for the younger option.
At the end of the day, I 'll blame Misbah & WY for this. Either they should have made Azhar to open & debut Haris or play Haris as opener. Selectors never select playing 11. But, knowing Misbah & WY, I was relieved that PAK didn't go with 8 men in 2nd Test - never change a winning combination & never experiment to accommodate a better balance.
I think, once Shehzad returns, Shan 'll struggle to make the squad - before next Test, few more candidates 'll be there.
