Shane Warne on Monday called for a five-match Test series, including a day/night game between India and Australia next season, after Virat Kohli asserted that his side is willing to play with the pink ball Down Under later this year.

I’ve said this before-but how good would a 5 test match series between Aust & India be next season. Bris Perth Adelaide D/N Melb & Syd. India are scheduled to tour Australia starting in November which will include four Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is as part of the calendar cycle that ends in 2021.

India was requested to play a day/night Test in Australia during the 2018-19 tour but the visitors had declined the offer.

However, on the eve of three-match ODI series opener against Australia in Mumbai , Kohli said his side is “ready and up for the challenge.”

Kohli’s statement prompted Warne to ask the BCCI and Cricket Australia to schedule a five-match Test series instead of four between the two countries in the next calendar cycle beginning in 2023.

Increase in the number of Test matches we or any other team play is always a welcome idea. ICC really needs to cut down on LOI cricket a bit and increase Test matches for every team.

But we were told that Australians do not consider India a rival and it is only a figment of Indian supporters’ imagination.

Yeah fatigue the hell out of both teams and especially if one teams already wins 3-0 it becomes quite meaningless for the other team. They would just be wanting to get out of the torment. Test cricket is not here to stay not in the longer run but they could keep trying if they want to

Shane Warne does not represent Australia - its one person's opinion.

He is not one person though. He is one of the greatest cricketers of all time and among the top 5 legends of Australian cricket.

If he wants a 5 match series between Australia and India then it is going to resonate with the Australian public.

I know it upsets us but India vs Australia is a genuine rivalry now.

We are cricket fans and we want to see the best two play a 5 match series.

India are a very good side; you would expect nothing else with the amount of money they have.

Understandable why Aussies want some real contest. Recent visitors were just jobbers, time to send in the heavies. Only India is capable enough to compete and and beat Aus in Aus, gonna be a mouthwatering contest, a clash to remember. Daddy of all series. Juggernaut vs Behemoth. I am hyped already!!

While Aus and Ind definitely have been top sides but some of the things are exaggerated by the fact that they have played a lot of series at home recently and every team is strong at home more often than not.

Pak has lost just two series in last 8-9 years at home while NZ and SA have also been pretty decent but they play lesser tests than Aus or Ind so the hype surrounding them isnt much.

Pak has convincingly beaten Aus twice in UAE on last two tours while SA has beaten India in SA every time except a draw or two.

Again as per performances in tests Aus and Ind are top teams but different number of tests each country plays makes it unlike many other sports when it comes to championships and definitely makes biased opinions towards team who play more test cricket and more at home too.

Yes India can give much better competition to Aus at home but that doesnt mean they both deserve more tests. SA have also beaten Aus at home while Pak has been one of the most competitive team in Eng, why not have 5 match series for both of those two?

I would love to watch India in Aus but at the same time there should be some balance to how the cricket schedule is divided. Revenue is important but priority should be the sport not maximizing the revenue on every opportunity one gets. Revenue can increase inf from other countries as well if cricket is encouraged and flourished there.

How nice it would have been if every team played a minimum of 15 Test matches every year.

Its up to the boards to organize how many matches they play, if I remember correctly Pakistan reduced the amount of test against Australia so they could play more limited over matches. CA and BCCI are actively promoting test cricket and some boards are not.

ECB too should be credited with that.

Its a fair point but, I think if the format of test cricket is to be kept relevant then ICC needs to have every team play somewhat similar number of matches as otherwise it would be too much power in the hands of the boards as some of them maybe will totally minimize tests due to big money in LOIs. One team playing 14-15 tests per year while other play 7-8 is a huge difference and the numbers should be brought closer.

4 tests minimum, 5 would be great. Not really worried about Australia tour but very furious about playing just 2 tests in NZ this year. Need to have a minimum of three tests in every series under WTC.

India and Australia does deserve to be a 5 match series as it is a genuine rivalry.

It’s always been a rivalry no one denies it especially since the monkey gate these teams hate each other now. Than kohli said on one tour no more friendships with this Aussie team. Plus they call him virat names in Australia. They hate him to their guts in Australia he’s extremely disliked by aussies so theres a huge rivalry. Plus they are the best two teams going around so there would be an automatic rivalry if there ever wasn’t one.

Why do Pakistan supporters feel the need to speak for Australians. Kohli is not hated in Australia, he has never upset Australian supporters and is respected for his batting.

Out of curiosity, is Harbhajan Singh intensely disliked there?

Not at all, when he played and was the opposition he was the enemy but that is only in the game, outside of that not many people have an opinion one way or the other. Aussie supporters will back their own and boo the opposition but when the match is finished no one cares anymore.

Did he want a 5 match series with India when Australia were thumping everyone in his playing days?

The guy just wants to continue being in the good books of Indian fans and BCCI so that he gets more and more sponsorship opportunities from India. Not sure how you cannot read through this.

Where did I say I was?.

You are expressing your views and talking about how Australians feel and then telling other posters (who you have no idea about where they live) that they have no right to speak about Australia(ns)

I suggest you state your views (which you have) and leave it at that.

Bro I know this cricket meme page and it’s an all Australian cricket meme page like Australian people only comment on it. Every time kohli fails they roast him like crazy and the comments are quite mean and derogatory towards him. He is very disliked in Australia plus his on field antics are not taken quite well by the majority of the public over there so I don’t know why you think he is not hated there.

India NZ test series is not a part of WTC.

As an Australian of Pakistani origin, I can safely say that no one likes Kohli's attitude here. Only Aussies of Indian origin are appreciative. I have not seen one comment praising Kohli from any cricket lover I have met here. So I am not sure how you classified that Aussies love him here. We may appreciate his batting to an extent but the attitude just destroys it.

I hope you didnt mean gora aussies only :sarf

I hope you used to watch cricket when Pakistan beat Aussies in UAE pretty heavily? (just to jog your memory or if you were too young at that time: https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-pakistan-2nd-test-australia-in-uae-2018-19) What is the big deal in beating them at your own backyard then? As far as Aussies in australia are concerned, even though Australia were beaten fair and square, you do know two giants were missing from this team. Talk about chest thumping.

People dislike Kohli in Australia also, because Kohli at times behaves like an arrogant and disrespectful player. He may be respected for his skill but not for his sportsmanship. So when you say he has never upset Australian supporters that is definitely just your personal and individual opinion and no, you do NOT speak for the Australian public just because you're an Aussie.

All those meme pages post against Virat solely for the entertainment value of riling up emotional Indian supporters who take the bait all too easily. The Australian sense of humour is almost impossible to understand for someone who hasn't lived here for a considerable amount of time.

Kohli isn't actually particularly disliked in Australia.

Bro what ever you wanna beleive but he is disliked by the majority of Australians Cause of his Attitude. Of course they acknowledge the fact that he’s a great batsman but I’m very sure they don’t like him at all. Even Tim Paine even though it was sledging but it was the truth in his sledging I know he’s your skipper mate but you seriously can’t like him as a bloke.

Wow, Aussies have such a sophisticated sense of humour that normal people from other countries are just way too dumb to understand it?

Give me a break, dude. I lived in Australia for 10 years and am an Aussie citizen also. It's nowhere near as complicated as you're making out.

But we were told that Australians do not consider India a rival and it is only a figment of Indian supporters’ imagination.

As i told in other thread an australian even made a movie about this rivalry post 2000. Part of the reasons were controversies. Part of the reason was due to legendary individual battles. Laxman vs Aussie Attack, Tendulkar vs Mcgrath, Warne. Bhajji vs aussies, Ishant vs Punter, Ganguly vs Steve Waugh. Andrew Symonds vs Bhajji, Bucknor incident, Sehwag vs Aussies. India vs Australia 2003 final. Some of the high quality exchanges happened between Australia and India post 2000. Seriously people have to stop thinking that India is bragging here. If Tomorrow Bangladesh trades some blows with India it could end up being a rivalry too. It took one Nidahas trophy for SL and BD to develop a new rivalry. After the snake dance mocking , SL supporters started rooting for India in the final. Besides in the last 20 years if we talk about home and away India have done better than every others with a win/loss ratio over 1. Only team to have that.

Kohli is hated but Naseem Shah’s hat trick ball shot against Starc is so much loved by Australians.

No one remembers Naseem Shah's whatever. Kohli I would say is actaully well respected because he is good, and aggresivre and combative, reminding us of ourselves. If he was Australian we would love him

kohli is respected by Aussies. I live in Brisbane and many here rate him. They still overrate sachin though for some reason.

He has scored 6707 runs against Australia in various formats at 50 including 20 centuries, 31 fities. Next best against Australia across different formats is Brian Lara 4714 runs at 45.76. So obviously they will rate him very high. Kohli has to make 2792 runs in the next 60 innings aginast them to match that.

I can second both of those. We rate Kohli a very good player. But wow Sachin spent 20 years taking my breath away, he's still #1 Indian batsman to me, with a special mention for VVS.

I still expect Kohli to cop the most stick when he is here though- he's the captain, the best player & the most fun to target (every chance he'll get wound up & silly or troll us back in superb fashion too).

Sure 5 tests would nice but I don't think its realistic. Surely arrangements have been made & TV/media rights already sold.

Of course he's doing this for BCCI "money".

I mean how can anyone want more games with the no.1 team in the world and the only other team which has it in them to beat them at home and have actually beaten them on the last visit ?

Come on Warne ! It's too apparent. :moyo

Increase in the number of Test matches we or any other team play is always a welcome idea. ICC really needs to cut down on LOI cricket a bit and increase Test matches for every team.
lmao do you want to kill the sport because that's what would happen if they did.

There's a logical reason why every team outside 3 teams is cutting down on Test cricket and playing more LOIs.

Boards cant sit on their hands and expect the ICC to organize everything for them. The boards have a responsibility to promote cricket. There is nothing to stop NZ from playing more test matches other than the NZ cricket board.
Yeah, no on watching it and the board losing $500,000 per Test while posting losses for the last 3 years is stopping them from playing.

I wish we would get ahead of the times and pull out playing Test cricket - this is inevitable and is what will happen within the next 2 decades. I can't see us, WI, Pakistan, Bangladesh or SL playing Test cricket in the 2040s.

Get first mover advantage while we can and promote the sport in the country with LOI cricket - this is something that actually appeals to kids.

More people play T20 (3-4 hours) and 40 overs (pretty much takes up your Saturday/Sunday) in clubs here, no one has time to play the 2 dayers. That's your whole damn weekend gone.

Oh bhai, first get your facts right. Aussies never thumped India, even at their peak. Only 1 series when they thumped India between 1995-2010.

In India, we won the series in 96 (one off test), 98, 2001, 2008 and 2010. Only in 2004 did Aus win the series 2-1 away.

In Aus, they thumped us 3-0 only once in 99. Since then, we drew in 03/04, lost by 2-1 margin in 07/08 away.

India was the only team that properly challenged them at their peak and all our affairs were generally a 4 match series.

After 2010, we only had one series where they blanked us away in 2011/12. We competed but lost 2-0 in 2014/15 and winning in 2018/19. In the meantime we blanked them 3-0 (or was it 4-0) at home in 2013 and again won a competitive series in 2017.

So yes, result wise we have been one of the most competitive teams home and away. And they have been the only team to have challenged Kohli’s test team at home.

new zealand economy is strong. They will be fine. pakistan will grow in the future. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh I am sure are on the right track. Their future outlook particular for Bangladesh is looking quite positive.
the introduction of Bangladesh premier league will do wonders as india' s brand value only improved via ipl. All these other countries will benefit from Introduicng these t20 leagues which would offer a pathway to receive a more prestigious and secure lucrative test contract. It is going to take some time PSL just started and look at the players they have been attracting. pakistan is already playing at home now.

west indies I don't know much about.

thats how I used to play in grade cricket in Brisbane. 2 different Sunday's. But man it takes 5 to 6 hours to finish. we start at 9 and finish at 3.

Any idea what's happening with SL? I swear it feels like they're losing interest and are getting more interest in rugby.

Rusell Arnold is always banging on about the rugby and how much SLs like it.

There's that too, still it takes up your whole day. Morning to evening.

I played one game a few years back and I was spent. Playing T20s now it and it's so much more enjoyable.

Game starts around 3 and ends around 6.30, more interesting to follow as well and you don't spend your whole day in the field.

I have friends who are moving on from 40 overs to 20 over matches because of it, none of them play 2 days as they think its a waste of time.

Just say it. You like the Gujarat Gulab Jamuns vs Kashmir Kaju Katlis more than trivial contests such as Australia vs New Zealand.

I actually want our own T20 league lol. Really envious of what the Aussies have going with the BBL. I was talking about it with mates and they agreed that it would be cool to have something to go to after work. We usually only attend T20Is and big ODI games. Can't get any of them to go for Tests but it's hard as most of them aren't interested in watching Test cricket the entire day.

I'm someone who still thinks Test cricket is the ultimate format to test your mettle. But I've seen it first hand and know for the betterment of the game in the NZ, NZC should focus on LOIs. There's little to gain from Test cricket and when theres such a massive gap between teams and the losses are that substantial, it makes little sense.

NZC are hurting themselves by playing Tests, the resources they're forgoing playing it could be used far better to actually grow the sport than to sink it into something you get no return. We're fools to carry on because the teams who actually make money from it need some credibility by us participating.

nah man. t20 league in n.z would actually setup a good platform for test cricket. So yes n.z do need a t20 league. Good talents will then be scouted and offered a lucrative test contract if they impression t20 provided they show the ability in terms of technique, speed, power hitting etc.

So now you have just proven the point I was trying to make. So India was this renegade of a side when Australians were dominating world cricket, yet even at this point the Great Shane Warne did not consider India 5 Test match worthy opponents?

I do not deny that the Australians enjoy playing against India because of the fiery nature of the contest but my point is that a lot of these ex legends/pundits are milking in the Indian money and a way to do so is consistently remain in the good books of Indian fans and BCCI management.

More test cricket is good, no matter which team, especially expanding series.

Absolutely. I don't bloody care which team it is, I just want to see more Test cricket being played. Teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and Bangladesh really need to play more Test cricket than they do now.

Ind-AUS is a rivalry since 2001; but the recent hype that AUS gives to IND is more marketing than substance.

IND is the best team right now but they are not as invincible as everybody makes them out to be.

It's not recent marketing hype at all.

Winning in India has always been almost mythically hard for Oz cricket. Teams that win there are remembered. For decades. Lawry's team was remembered. The fact we barely ever won didn't deter us, it made it a bigger goal.

The tied test in '86 is one of the most storied matches in history. Jones & Border & co still dine out on tales of that game.

When we finally could compete & win the odd test or even series, yes it grew.

Monkeygate , Ganguly's fighting ton, Kumble's reference to "only one team playing cricket" etc all added to it recently. More than hype.
