What's new

Shaun Tait named fast-bowling Coach for 12 months, M Yousuf named batting coach for Australia series

Being a legend is no guarantee of being a good coach ie Waqar is a classic example. Tait deserves a chance.

More important will be if Tait teaches our phasst bowlers how to approach the bowling in oDIs and T20 because in this format most of our bowlers are gun barrel straight while searching for yorkers

How important an impact has Tait made on the Pakistan bowling so far?

Not much. Our bowling was thrashed in the first 2 games so I wouldn't say he has necessarily done much despite an improved performance this game... Would not attribute it to him...

Even in the previous games , only Hasan Ali has gone for runs i believe.. he is pathetic in LOI for a year now

Lets see if uses the upcoming downtime to good effect for Pakistan bowlers.

It should not be that tour finished and Tait packed his bags and gone PcB should continue his service at the NCA and prepare for Ned WI Sl tour

Let’s see but the batting seemed to have been acceptable this series, however Tait inclusion was probably to keep Aussies integrated throughout the tour.

So when the bowlers are poor the coach is to blame but when the bowlers perform well the coach has had no impact?

What will he do during the off season or when there is a break in international cricket for Pakistan is very important.

Tait has been a very awkward appointment by Ramiz. He has an inferiority complex when it comes to Australians and as soon as an Australian applies for a coaching role, he approves without thinking it through.

Tait is a total misfit. The fact that he has no experience makes it worse.

Seems to be with the Pakistan squad but what changes are you expecting to see based on his input in the upcoming ODI Series vs WI?

Vernon Philander would have a better bowling coach.I don’t know why PCB couldn’t work out a deal with him.He did a job when he was bowling consultant for T20 WC.The players showed a lot of respect for him and he was very enthusiastic to coach them.

In the past 12 months Shaheen, Haris and Hassan Ali have all played International, domestic, various t20 leagues and county cricket meaning a different coach/consultant every 2 months. I wonder if it could get confusing for them by receiving all these advices.

Tait interview from this morning (2nd ODI vs WI in Multan)

Fakhar still didn't learn to rotate strike. What is M Yousuf doing as a coach?

Speaking in PCB podcast

"Sometimes it is not even his [Shaheen] pace, sometimes it's about his presence, standing at the top of his mark, and world finest batter think they don't want to face this bowler"

"The way the crowd gets involved when he is bowling is all that theater. Most right-handers know they will be tested with an in-swinger but still, they don't have any answers to it," added Shaun Tait.

"I am pretty new to the job so the next 8-9 months are going to be very exciting to watch how these pacers progress"

"All of these players have natural flair and ability and my job is to guide them. For me, it is all about keeping it simple and keeping on honing their natural skills add keeping their confidence up," concluded Tait.

I have no idea what Shaun Tait's cricketing brain is like. is he a good coach? Do we know?

With news that Umer Rashid, has been added to the Pakistan men’s side as assistant to the fast bowling coach for the Asia Cup, question really is what is Tait doing? Does he have so much at his hands that he needs an assistance? In fact he is an assistant himself to the Head Coach!

Naseem seems to be improving under him Tait however, thats based upon what we are seeing. Maybe in the dressing room and training sessions there is some communication gap, an issue might have been raised by any bowler or captain. Not sure what exactly is the point as until few days ago Umer was working with Hassan Ali at NHPC.

What would have been more appropriate considering the conditions as well as bit of struggle for our spinners other than Nawaz is a spin bowling consultant.

Just another pointless appointment. The coaches make little or no difference and its for the players to work hard and analyse their game and improve. If they need specialist help, then it should be available

Should've been kept as coach. High grade player and coach

He had some issue with lack of clarity on Jd.

Bowling coach position is a pretty standard position around the cricketing world, not sure what were his expectations with regards to Jd. He was offered a role but, things didn't work out due to this Jd issue. As per below (Weird stuff).

“Yes, I was offered the role by the PCB but from a planning and execution point of view, I feel they let themselves down a bit. I received a phone call on 7th February, to inform me that they wished to appoint me as the Fast-Bowling Coach,” Philander said in the interview.

“Whilst I was flattered by this offer, I told them that I needed to know the exact job description of this role, what was expected of me and when they expected me to be there and how I could fit in with the schedule for the Pakistan team,” he added.

Why does Pakistan need 2 fast bowling coaches at the Asia Cup.

Tait is probably being well paid for his role, so why do they need a 2nd person doing the same job.

This is basic stuff any coach would ask. Is he required in off season? Will he be working with players during training/conditioning sessions, and how long the sessions are expected to last? Etc.

Some basic stuff Nadeem Khan should have reverted back to him. Instead within a few hours he was informed that Tait has instead been appointed as bowling coach, apparently because Tait was not concerned with what the role required and thought of it as easy buckets without properly defined JDs.

Vernon Philander would have been an excellent bowling coach. I don’t know why PCB couldn’t appoint him.

Because most incompetent, Moin Khan's brother was asked to contact Philander, who couldn't even answer him what would be his JDs and time commitments, etc.

1) I feel there is a language barrier, the coach and the bowlers are not able to understand each other completely and Umar Rasheed can do the job of translator cum assistant bowling coach for a short stint

or

2)maybe to help hasnain with his new bowling action.

or

3) The PCB is thinking of appointing Umar Rasheed as the next bowling coach and they just want him to be familiar with the national team and the bowlers so that the transition could be efficient. Remember, Shaun Tait has a contract of only one year.

These are just assumptions the reality can be completely different.

The Vernon Philander interview link is here.

He explained why he didn't accept the job with PCB:

Who is Umar Rashid anyway?

Brother of the great leech Haroon Rashid.

Previously him, his brother Mohtasim Rashid have worked with Pak team as fielding coach and bowling coach I believe. His name's been in PCB's hands on employees since 2007 or even longer.

"The intensity with which our bowlers go at, they are bound to get injured"

"Also, the bowlers are young and there is a good chance that you will get injured when you come into international cricket; This is because your workload goes up, the pressure increases on you, you are tense, you are playing against India so when your body tenses up you can get a few niggles here and there"

"The most important part of my job is getting the next guys ready; The other 2-3 fast-bowlers who aren't playing, especially the younger guys who haven't played much, get them ready to play against India, against Australia, against England or whoever it might be and get them ready so that they can deal with the pressure"

Experience of an India v Pakistan game

"People told me wait till you see one of these matches, or when you are involved in one of these games...When I was young, I played in an Ashes series, I've played in 2 World Cup finals, but this is a different level"

"As a coach you can't do anything, and you cannot control anything on the field, so you get more nervous as a coach"

I have noticed a trend in the coaching careers. Any person who wants to become a coach after retirement, they first give tryouts with Afghanistan. That is usually short stint, after that they than apply for Pakistan positions and than after that they go on to other teams. This is a very good tactic.

I wont be surprised if Umar Gul is the replacement of Tait in future.

I believe in format specific coaches. All formats have differing requirements and demands. Gul being a T20 bowling legend can be a good T20 bowling coach. Mohd Asif in comparison can be a good test bowling coach because the line, length, patience requirements are different.

Really like the new management setup. Anything is better than Misbah-Waqar in all fairness though. I would still rate Hayden and Philander as a better combo than MoYo and Tait for now.

So far every dollar spent on Tait services is being fruitful his knowledge for T20 WC down under will be handful hopefully our pace quartet will be fit and fine

Hayden is said to be returning to the Pakistan camp for the World Cup once again.

More quotes from Tait:

"Haris Rauf’s last over for me, putting aside the misfield and the drop catch. He has been working so hard on his yorkers and slower balls like the other guys have. And his execution in the last over was perfect last night. Potentially, that was match-winning"

“I was sitting inside the room watching over the glass. Players were getting quite fiery and excited. But we weren’t quite sure about the win until the end. People were moving and players were telling them not to move from their spots"

“So, whenever someone moved, players yelled, ‘don’t move, don’t move’. Just the usual excitement when you have a chance of winning a close match"

Speaking to the press, Shaun Tait:

"The only thing we've been talking about is consistency. We just talk about how to remain consistent"

"Haris has got pace, aggression so we often just talk about being consistent. Yes, we worked on his death bowling and he showed improvement in T20 Asia Cup as you said,"

"Naseem is young, energetic and reminds me of my days"

"His ability to bowl with a new ball is excellent,"

"I actually don't know about Shaheen much. He is going along well, that's what I heard latest,"

Any improvement in the Pakistani pacers since Tait has taken over?

I'd suggest not reading too much into this game.

Proper luxury road for batsmen this.

How is Tait doing so far?

Looks like Harris Rauf got quite a bit of very good coaching from Tim Macaskill during his time in BBL, and who knows if Tait picked up on it?

But Naseem Shah has immensely improved. Both Haris Rauf and Naseem have also developed some seriously good and very deceptive slow balls. Their Yorkers are pretty good too.

There are non-existing wides and front foot no balls. So a very, very good improvement to cap the extras that was pretty horrible pain in Pak bowling attack.

It looks like Tait has done some significantly good work.

Hasnain also got this action fixed and Wasim Jr also has a great control on line n length, with not giving any extras.

Credit where due and surely a trillion times better than Waqar Yonus.

Tait has been really good. You can see how he's helped the bowlers adjust their lengths according to the wicket.

Good points.

They are bowling with discipline and everyone seems to understand their role.

He's not over complicating and getting in their way either. I LOVED the confidence Shaheen had in the first over to NZ. Bowled that same full inswinging yorker 3x in a row, because he knows it's his best ball. Some bowlers would have overthought it or lost confidence and think they have to try something different because the batsman has seen it coming twice. Nope. Just nailed it again.

I'm impressed with Naseem's maturity- he conceded a boundary first ball sometimes but stayed cool and dragged it back, finishing with a solid over not expensive at all.

They all know what their role is in the team. I would assume this comes from Tait.

Masterstroke by hiring him really has turned our bowlers into monsters:bhatti

Something is not right. Unlike Hayden, he is not getting any attention and coverage. He is not speaking to the media, he doesn’t seem active and there are no dressing room snippets of him giving motivational speeches etc. to the players.

Yesterday after the win, he ignored Zainab Abbas when she asked for his reaction. It was really awkward.

It appears that something is going on between him and the management/PCB.

Maybe he is an introvert or does not like media engagement still remember his presser during Eng Series, whatever he is fulfilling his main duty 110%

Shaun Tait has developed huge amount of consistency, accuracy, reduced errors in current bowlers. Bowlers are looking more lethal now and that's why Pakistan has best economy rate in this WC.

The department he’s in charge of is doing excellently.

Best bowling attack in the tournament by far

Not trying to speculate anything but just googled n came across this ugly and tasteless incident that happened on Oct 1 when Shaun was sent to face the presser (not sure who the eff decides that, and why don’t we have a couple of designated people in the camp to face the press), after the loss against England - and Shaun started by saying, They send me to face the press when the team does bad.

And then some idiot from PCB turned off the mic and directed him as to what to say and what not to say.

I think he may now just be waiting till the end of his contract due to courtesy n friendship with Ramiz, or else he would quit right at the spot.

Totally ridiculous by PCB.

Hayden was only bought in for his speeches in an Aussie accent and for our impressionable fans to eat it up. If he cared so much for Pakistan then he would have stuck with the team post the 2021 WC (knowing the next WC was only in a year) where he could actually do some coaching.

He has always been an introvert, wouldn't read too much into it. Long term though, im pretty sure Gul will end up being our bowling coach

Best bowling attack in the tournament by far

I read that after the NZ SF, Pakistan became the first team to not bowl a single wide or no-ball in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Tait is doing an excellent job.

Can we please get all fast bowlers to block Waqar Younis on whatsapp? I am concerned he might try to ruin them again by his useless tips.

Pakistan have terrible batsmen & bowlers. It is not Yousuf’s & Tait’s fault but coaches live & die by results. Both need to be given the boot along with Saqlain.

Tait must be looking at this Test series and wondering what the hell is going on with Pakistan's bowling strength and wondering if the likes of Faheem Ashraf are really the best Pakistan has at the moment.

So true - no idea what he is doing - there isn't anyone to coach!

Shaun Tait in an interview regarding wickets in India and Pakistan:

“I guess that's another thing about playing on these wickets,”

“It makes selection complicated as well. When you make wickets extreme, all the selection talks are about that. Even the teams get confused about what they should be doing. Everyone is afraid to make mistakes when it comes to selection. I saw it when I spent time with Pakistan on the coaching staff, there was this talk about home wickets and what the conditions should be, which made selectors' job so much harder on trying to understand what the lineup should be,”

The New Zealand series was the last assignment for head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and bowling coach Shaun Tait since their contracts expired in February this year.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Yousuf's appointment as batting coach of the Pakistan men's cricket team was determined on a series-to-series basis under the Ramiz Raja-led administration. His permanent role is the batting coach of the National High Performance Centre (NHPC) in Lahore.
