This troika is happy and comfortable along with their supporters that they have the Army senior leadership in their pocket which is the key to ruling Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif has Asim Munir's London Plan video and Asif Zardari has videos of Nadeem Anjum being honey trapped with Russian call girls he set up when the later as DG ISI was visiting Karachi in late 2021.

End result, PTI out, PDM in. PTI also has to rely at some point it is madness to rely on the state institutions when everything is in the pocket of these criminals.

The biggest positive that has happened for Pakistan in the last 6-7 years is that terrorism has drastically decreased. People seem to have forgetten what a massive positive it is. There was a time when there was everyday occurance of terrorism in Pakistan, that too massively destructive ones. People have taken that positive for granted.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reacted to Supreme Court’s (SC) opinion on the presidential reference against the ‘controversial’ death sentence awarded to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, ARY News reported.

PM Shehbaz said that by admitting the mistake in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s trial, the Supreme Court’s opinion on the presidential reference had set a new history and tradition.

The prime minister congratulated Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, President-designate Asif Ali Zardari, PPP leadership and workers for the Supreme Court’s observation that former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto did not get a fair trial.

“It is not possible to correct the past mistake but by admitting the serious mistake, a new history and a new tradition have been set,” he remarked in a statement.

He said that rectification of an injustice of a court by the court was a positive development.

“The unanimous opinion of the Supreme Court in the Bhutto reference will help understand the history at the national level through the right perspective. The process of national unity and development can be accelerated only by correcting the past mistakes and doing away with the bitterness,” Prime Minister Shehbaz remarked.

Federal cabinet to be finalised within next '48 hours'

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Attaullah Tarar said Wednesday that the federal cabinet would be finalised within the next 48 hours, but did not reveal the names of the candidates being considered for the top positions.

“It is not right to confirm something prematurely [...] once it is finalised, you will be informed,” Tarar told Geo News’ Shahzeb Khanzada, as reports are rife about the names being discussed as potential members of the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has vowed to work day and night for the development of Pakistan amid crucial challenges facing the country.

Earlier today, Geo News quoting sources reported that PM Shehbaz concluded consultations with close aides for the formation of the federal cabinet and deciding on key ministries.

As per the sources, key ministries of defence, foreign affairs, and finance are likely to be handed over to two PML-N bigwigs — Khawaja Asif and Ishaq Dar — and a renowned banker Muhammad Aurangzeb, respectively, the sources said.

Likewise, PML-N’s Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal would be given the ministries of planning, and development, as well as privatisation, as per the sources.

The insiders also revealed that Tarar is expected to be given the information and broadcasting ministry, whereas, another PML-N stalwart Rana Sanaullah — former interior minister — would be made special assistant to prime minister (SAPM) on interior affairs.

PM seeks timeline for PIA privatization

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday sought a final implementation schedule for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Chairing a high-level meeting on the airline’s privatisation and the restructuring of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the PM directed the Ministry of Privatisation to present the schedule about the PIA’s privatisation in two days.

The proposed roadmap for the automation of FBR was also approved, in principle.

The PM approved the hiring of a consultant for the restructuring of FBR and directed that legal issues holding up Rs1.7 trillion in stuck-up taxes be resolved.

He also directed the Ministry of Law to present proposals to create a legal department in the FBR for preparation of drafts according to law and hiring of services of lawyers.

PM Shehbaz said that six to seven per cent economic growth was possible with the implementation of reforms, adding that investment was needed to modernise the revenue and tax system.

“We want to bring a system of taxation based on incentives. We desire to reduce the burden of taxes, but the business community has to help by playing a role for the progress of people through social service,” he said.

The prime minister asked that an effective third party audit system should be ensured and urged that all tax exemptions should be thoroughly reviewed.

Outgoing finance minister Shamshad Akhtar briefed the meeting on the steps taken to enhance tax collection; refunds’ payment to the exporters; expanding the tax net; automation process; stopping tax evasion, institutional corruption and smuggling; and provision of quality services to the people. The Federal Policy Board should prepare a long-term tax plan for the continuity of policy, she added.

The meeting was attended by senators, MNAs and officials from key institutions, such as the State Bank and FBR. Prominent banker and HBL CEO Muhammad Aurangzeb also took part in the meeting via video link.

PM Shehbaz announces compensation for victims of AJK rains, snowfall

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced that Rs2 million each would be distributed among the families of the deceased and Rs500,000 each among those injured in the recent torrential rains and snowfall in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

He was speaking at a function held for distribution of cheques among the victims of the rains and snowfall. In attendance on the occasion were members of the affected families, as well as the AJK prime minister and his ministers.

Similarly, the prime minister said Rs700,000 each would be given to the persons whose houses were completely damaged while the owners of partially damaged houses would get Rs350,000.

He asked the AJK government to complete the survey as soon as possible so that the funds would be distributed by March 13.

The prime minister also directed the NDMA chief to procure a helicopter to be made available to the AJK government so that it could immediately reach out to the affected people in the territory’s snowbound and landslide-hit hilly areas.

He regretted that the pervasive tax evasion culture in Pakistan had not only overburdened the country with substantial debt but had also posed serious challenges to provision of basic and essential services .

“Presently, Pakistan’s tax revenue stands at Rs12 trillion. It’s disheartening to note that the amount slipping through the cracks and not reaching the treasury, due to tax evasion, is far more than this figure,” he said. “The salaries we are giving in the centre are from the borrowed money.”

Referring to the state-owned entities, he said together they had been inflicting losses worth several hundred billion rupees on the state exchequer. “Only PIA’s annual loss stands at Rs825 billion. Around Rs500 to 600 billion are lost every year in power thefts,” he said.

International Women’s Day function

Meanwhile, speaking at a Khatun-i-Pakistan Awards function on Friday, the prime minister said the government was fully committed to empower the youth, particularly women, by providing them with better facilities of education, vocational training, and the latest technology tools so that they could help propel the country on the road to economic progress and development.

The function was held on the occasion of the International Women Day.

He said the government was making its utmost efforts to facilitate the female population of the country and protect their rights.

He congratulated the award winners and lauded their efforts and contributions to make the name of Pakistan prominent among other nations of the world.

International Women’s Day was observed around the world to acknowledge the important role of women in society and Pakistan was not far behind others in providing rights and facilities to women, Mr Sharif said.

He said the country needed to make more policy interventions and provide more resources and opportunities to women.

He noted that women all around the world were contributing to the progress and welfare of society and there was a need to give women equal opportunities and a better environment at workplaces so that they could easily contribute to economic progress and development of the country.

He expressed the hope that the provincial governments would take forward the policies for women that were introduced and implemented in the past. He pledged to make all resources available for women so that they could equip themselves with the latest technology tools.

“Women can help make Pakistan a great nation by utilising all available resources,” the PM said.

Mohsin Naqvi, familiar Dar, Khawaja Asif among likely names in Shehbaz’s new cabinet​

Newly elected PM Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday continued consultations within his own party over the federal cabinet, which is likely to be constituted in a couple of days.

Sources say that Khawaja Asif will retain the portfolio of defence, Musaddiq Malik will get petroleum, Ahsan Iqbal will hold onto the planning and development ministry while Azam Nazeer Tarar will be the law minister again.

Atta Tarar is tipped to be the new information minister, while Shaza Fatima Khwaja is being named as minister for IT.

However, it is unclear who will lead the finance team, as both Ishaq Dar and HBL chief Muhammad Aurangzeb have been participating in recent meetings on the economic situation.

Former caretaker chief minister of Punjab and current Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is also in the run for interior minister, and has admitted that he would be a candidate for the upcoming Senate elections.

Reports indicate that Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party President Aleem Khan and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Salik could also join the cabinet in the first phase.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has finalized a "lean cabinet," which will be sworn in on Monday (today) to commence work on the tasks outlined in the first 100-day agenda.

Two key PML-N leaders confirmed to The Express Tribune that the prime minister has finalized his team. They disclosed that the names of these ministers, along with their portfolios, will be unveiled on Monday. "The names will be announced tomorrow [March 11]; just a few more hours to go," one of them stated.

They elaborated that the prime minister has opted for a compact federal cabinet this time, believing that portfolios should be entrusted to individuals capable of diligent work, delivery, and steering the country out of multifaceted crises.

During his 16-month tenure as the PM between April 2022 and August 2023, Shehbaz had an excessively large federal cabinet, drawing widespread criticism with some describing it as a financial burden on taxpayers amidst economic challenges.

PML-N sources disclosed that in the initial phase, PM Shehbaz intends to appoint only a select few "competent individuals" as ministers to oversee key ministries.
They indicated that more inductions might follow later, with members from the MQM-P, the PMLQ, and the IPP eyeing cabinet berths.

The PPP has already declared its abstention from joining the forthcoming federal cabinet.
Nevertheless, PM Shehbaz extended another invitation to the party leadership to join the cabinet. "The PPP politely declined the offer but will continue to provide input on policy formulation," one of the sources revealed.

Certain PML-N leaders, potentially cabinet members, emphasized the party's focus on achieving the tasks outlined for the first 100 days.

Their objective is to address economic challenges, attract investment, curb inflation, and ensure optimal utilization of time. "Governance, economic revitalization, national security, agriculture, and climate change remain paramount," one source affirmed.

"In addition, commitments related to education, healthcare, employment, and the party manifesto will be fulfilled," the source added. The PML-N manifesto also pledges to abolish the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and restore Article 62 & 63 to their original form.
In the backdrop discussions, some PML-N leaders hinted at the privatization of underperforming entities, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

They also underscored the need to renegotiate a fresh deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address ongoing economic challenges.

The sources indicated that the initial cabinet is expected to comprise just over a dozen ministers. In the first phase, portfolios such as finance, foreign affairs, energy, planning, interior, information, and privatization will be assigned.

Moreover, federal ministers may be assigned additional portfolios to maintain a lean cabinet size. Expected inclusions in the federal cabinet include Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, and banker Muhammad Aurangzeb.

The newly formed federal cabinet will be administered the oath by newly-elected President Asif Ali Zardari, who himself was sworn in on Sunday.

The duo of PM Shehbaz and President Zardari, returning to their previous roles, represents the new face of the coalition government, seemingly poised for stability.

Previously, PM Shehbaz led a coalition government following the ouster of the PTI-led federal government, while Zardari completed his first five-year term as President of Pakistan in 2013.

The military and political leadership including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and others attended the ceremony.

PM Shehbaz, naval chief discuss matters pertaining to Pakistan Navy​

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad and discussed professional matters pertaining to the Pakistan Navy, Radio Pakistan reports.

The naval chief also felicitated PM Shehbaz on assuming the office of the premier.

PM pushes for IT sector expansion

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the submission of a comprehensive roadmap to boost IT exports. He stated that the government would take steps to fully utilise the billion-dollar potential of the country for IT exports, and ensure that young people are provided with the necessary facilities for education, skills development, and startups.

The prime minister chaired a review meeting on the IT and Telecom sector, attended by Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Governor State Bank of Pakistan Jameel Ahmed, Shahzad Saleem, and other relevant senior officials, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release. During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted the positive outcomes witnessed from the initiation of different projects in the IT sector during their previous tenure.

He stressed the resolution of all issues faced by startups, freelancers, and IT companies relating to banking. Expressing satisfaction over the current year’s IT export volume of more than $3 billion, he emphasised its further increase. He observed that to bring Pakistan’s IT sector to international standards, rigorous efforts are required.

The prime minister also requested the submission of a comprehensive report regarding special technology zones. The meeting was briefed on progress regarding the IT package announced by the prime minister in June 2023. Due to the special attention of PM Sharif during the previous tenure, IT exports witnessed a 13% increase during the first seven months of the current fiscal year compared to the previous corresponding year.

Under the Digiskills programme, a total of 4 million students from 17 batches, including 28% females, have been imparted training. Pakistan has emerged as the second top country in the world based on the number of freelancers. Additionally, Pakistan is exporting IT products to 170 countries worldwide.

The meeting was informed that during the previous year, an investment of $400 million was made in Pakistani startups. The prime minister directed the necessary legal and policy-related steps to attract investment and boost IT exports. He also called for expediting work on projects meant to enhance professional and technical training for youth to fully utilise the potential in the IT sector. The meeting was also briefed on the progress of IT, E-Rozgar, startups, cybersecurity, the telecom sector, and the launch of 5G.

PM Shehbaz forms committee to curtail govt expenses

In view of the financial challenges being faced by the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday formed a committee to curtail government expenses.

“The PM formed the committee to ensure austerity measures on the government side,” Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told Dawn.

Members of the committee comprise federal secretaries of cabinet, finance and I&P divisions, as well as economists Dr Qaisar Bengali, Dr Farrukh Saleem and Dr Naveed Iftikhar.

The committee will devise terms of reference and review a national austerity report of the finance division. The main objective of the committee is to suggest institutional reforms and cut the size of the government.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz paid surprise visits to different Utility Stores across the federal capital to inspect the execution of the Prime Minister’s Ramazan Relief Package, saying he would not tolerate any compromise on the quality of essential items being sold in these stores at subsidised rates.

During the visit, the prime minister interacted with the beneficiaries of the scheme and inquired whether they faced any issues while benefiting from the package.

He instructed the authorities concerned to ensure that entitled beneficiaries of the relief package faced no problem in availing the facility.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Shehbaz said that under the federal government’s Ramazan Relief Package, Rs77 per kg subsidy was being given on wheat flour and Rs100 per kg on ghee, besides a subsidy of 20-30 per cent on other food items such as rice, pulses, sugar, etc, for the deserving families.

He said that under the package, the BISP beneficiaries would get additional stipend worth Rs10,000 each, while under the Kafalat programme, thousands of families from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan would get an additional amount of Rs2,000 each.

The prime minister said he had formed several teams that would pay surprise visits to various USC outlets to check the availability and quality of the food items, adding that strict action will be taken against those involved in selling low quality items at the Utility Stores.

Separately, in an interview with the Chinese Xinhua News Agency, PM Shehbaz said that Pakistan was ready to move towards the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

“China has been extremely helpful in promoting Pakistan’s economic progress, and CPEC has played a very important role, which we really appreciate deeply,” he said.

According to Xinhua, Pakistan is planning to build industrial parks and export zones and looks forward to Chinese joint ventures in sectors such as textile and steel, which combine Chinese technologies with Pakistan’s labour assets.

“Through those joint ventures, high-quality products in agriculture, industry, IT, etc., are produced to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and wealth and increase our production and exports,” PM Shehbaz added.

The prime minister said Pakistan is working toward electrifying its transport system to cut import fuel costs and spend the money on development instead. The country also plans to acquire clean energy technologies from China and others.

Expressing his admiration for the Chinese model, PM Shehbaz said the country’s modernisation has created growth centres and sectors competitive in the global market.

“Despite challenges in recent years, China’s growth has still gone steadily compared to other countries, which is a remarkable achievement,” he added.

The government on Thursday withdrew a notification appointing a former federal secretary as chairman of the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) after strong opposition from the PPP, a provincial lawmaker said.

According to a picture of the notification shared by Sindh MPA Maleeha Manzoor on X, the orders for the Irsa chairman’s appointment were to be “treated as withdrawn”.

A day earlier, the premier had appointed Zafar Mahmood — a retired BS-22 federal government officer — as the Irsa chairman, causing much uproar in yesterday’s National Assembly session.

PPP MNA Syed Naveed Qamar had declared the PM’s act of appointing the Irsa chairman “very serious, illegal and unconstitutional”, urging the government to immediately withdraw the appointment notification.

The Awami Tehreek, Grand Democratic Alliance, Sindh Taraqqi-pasand Party and Jeay Sindh Mahaz-Riaz also strongly opposed the appointment, terming it unconstitutional, illegal and immoral.

Earlier today, in a telephonic conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah of the notification’s withdrawal, according to Sindh CM spokesperson Rasheed Channa.

According to Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro, CM Shah made it a point to note that Irsa’s chairman will be appointed from a rotation of members of the provincial cabinets, as per the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

He further noted that the PM had “accepted the stance” of the Sindh CM and the provincial irrigation department.

Speaking to reporters in Karachi, CM Shah said, “The whole purpose of Irsa was that there would be no influence of the Federation in this regard.”

He referenced an ordinance that had been introduced during the caretaker government’s tenure, in which it was amended that a representative of the Federation will be a member of Irsa.

The Sindh CM highlighted that the provincial cabinet had strictly opposed this amendment.

Controversial Irsa Amendment Ordinance 2024​

Mahmood’s induction as Irsa chairman had been made under the controversial Irsa Amendment Ordinance 2024 that was returned with reservations by then-president Arif Alvi to then-caretaker PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

An official from the Ministry of Water Resources said the president had returned the draft ordinance, but it was only known to the presidency and the PM’s office whether the president had rejected the ordinance or suggested a revisit.

“What we know for sure is that the Irsa Amendment Ordinance 2024 has now been printed [in the gazette of Pakistan] and will be placed before parliament to become a permanent act, because the ordinance obviously has a limited shelf life,” he explained.

Sindh Chamber of Agriculture rejects amendment to Irsa Act​

On Tuesday, the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) had rejected the proposed amendment to the Irsa Act through an ordinance and urged the president and newly-installed federal government to take notice of caretaker government’s “overstepping of its authority in flagrant violation of relevant decision of the CCI”.

A meeting of the chamber termed the ordinance regarding amendment to the Irsa Act “unconstitutional and illegal” and criticised the caretakers’ move as “unethical”. It said that the caretaker government clearly overstepped its authority, and added that the SCA, therefore, rejected it.

Discussing the ordinance, the meeting participants noted that under the proposed amendment, the authority to appoint Irsa chairman was delegated to prime minister whereas under the Act in effect post, the chairman’s post was to be rotated among provinces.

The meeting held that a caretaker government did not have the authority to propose amendment to any Act through an ordinance.

“An Act can be amended by an elected parliament, government and the CCI,” it asserted, and explained that such a draft had to be submitted before the CCI and chief ministers, being members of CCI, should give their input on it and then it had to be tabled, if unanimously agreed by CCI, in parliament through a resolution calling for the amendment to the Act.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday visited the residences of martyrs who had embraced Shahadat during a recent operation against terrorists in North Waziristan to express condolence with the bereaved families.

The PM went to the residence of Capt Ahmed Badar Shaheed to offer his heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family.

According to the PM Office, expressing sympathies with the bereaved family, the prime minister said he was very impressed by their patience and determination.

Earlier, the prime minister also visited the residence of Lt Col Syed Kashif Ali Shaheed in Rawalpindi and offered his heartfelt condolence to the family. He prayed to Allah Almighty to grant eternal peace to the martyrs and patience to the bereaved families to bear the loss with courage.

The PM said the brave Jawans and officers of Pakistan Army had sacrificed their lives to safeguard their motherland. He said the entire nation, including himself, paid tributes to them. “The families of martyrs are a matter of pride for the entire nation,” he added.

PM wants transparent provision of relief to rain victims

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday sought a report regarding swift completion and transparent provision of relief to the people affected by recent torrential rains across the country.

He also directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to accomplish a joint survey report in collaboration with the provinces, besides enhancement of cooperation with the provinces to face the future calamities.

The prime minister also sought an implementation report over his directive in the previous tenure regarding technical improvement of NDMA, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

The prime minister was given a detailed briefing by the NDMA about the relief and rehabilitation activities in the wake of recent torrential rains as well as weather forecast and preparedness.

The meeting was apprised of the recent damages, rescue efforts and distribution of assistance amount.

The NDMA with assistance of provinces; specially Balochistan would soon complete a collective verification survey over number of complete and partially damaged houses.

Under the prime minister’s directive, a total of 766,000kg dry ration would be distributed in Gwadar till March 24 out of which about 388,000kg ration had been distributed so far till March 16. Moreover, 97,000kg ration had been distributed in Quetta and Dalbadin, it was further informed.

Kuwaiti ambassador

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday called for concerted efforts to ensure the early implementation of seven agreements worth $10 billion signed between Pakistan and Kuwait in November last year.

The bilateral ties were discussed in a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Pakistan Nassar Abdulrahman Jasser Almutairi who called on him.

The prime minister noted with satisfaction that both countries had signed seven agreements for cooperation in diverse areas including food security, technology, hydel power, mining and minerals, water supply and mangrove rehabilitation, a PM Office press release said.

In this context, he emphasized the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) which provided a robust and efficient mechanism to attract foreign investment into Pakistan.

The Kuwaiti ambassador thanked Pakistan for its support to Kuwait in difficult times.

Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) on Saturday urged the federal government to declare an agriculture emergency in the country, ARY News reported.

In a statement, Kissan Ittehad Chairman Khalid Hussain Bath demanded the restoration of the Rs1.8 trillion package announced by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif for the farmers’ community.

He said that the farmers will begin a protest after Eidul Fitr if the government fails to address the issues of the community. “A sit-in will be staged in Islamabad if needed.”

He lamented the hike in the price of the fertilizers, saying that the farmers were buying urea for Rs6,000 per bag.

The farmer leader claimed that there was not a clear government policy regarding the agriculture sector. He said that his organisation could guide the government about the crops that could bring foreign exchange to the country.

Kissan Ittehad President Mian Umer said that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has not conducted a single meeting on the agriculture sector.

Criticising the government over its lack of interest in the sector, he claimed that the “sugar mafia” has not paid farmers after buying sugarcane from them.

Umer also decried the hiked electricity prices and its impact on the farmers, saying that farmers were paying Rs54 for per unit of electricity.

He said that the government was forcing the community to come out on the street and shut down the city.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday issued urgent directives to take decisive action against tax defaulters and evaders, signalling a renewed crackdown on financial misconduct in the country.

In a high-level meeting held in Islamabad regarding the implementation of the track and trace system, the premier chaired discussions aimed at bolstering tax enforcement measures across various sectors of the economy.

A committee has been tasked with identifying obstacles within the system and pinpointing those responsible for tax theft within a strict seven-day timeframe, the PM Office media wing said in a press release.

The committee would be tasked to submit proposals for enforcing automatic tax system in factories and industries.

The meeting was attended by federal ministers including Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahad Khan Cheema, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jehanzaib Khan, Chairman FBR Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana and other senior officials.

PM Shehbaz questioned as to why the system was still inactive, saying that it should have been made functional in the tobacco, sugar, cement and fertiliser industries in the last two years and that the system should be placed in other important sectors of the economy.

He said that all the legal impediments in the enforcement of the track and trace system should be removed. The prime minister directed that the system should be enforced at all the production lines of cement factories, besides he summoned a comprehensive plan for digital strategy and automated track and trace system.

He further directed that all factories resisting the implementation of the track and trace system should be immediately sealed. He expressed that besides generating revenues, the said system could also be utilised to identify counterfeit and substandard products.

The prime minister called for an end to the circulation of fake and unregistered cigarettes and emphasised their destruction. He highlighted that the country was grappling with economic issues, exacerbated by the connivance of mafia elements causing harm to the national economy. Additionally, the prime minister emphasised seeking assistance from international institutions in implementing the track and trace system.

During the meeting, detailed information was provided about the challenges hindering the automated implementation of the track and trace system in the cement, sugar, fertiliser, and tobacco sectors.

It was reported that out of 14 tobacco factories, the system was fully functional, while 12 others had been sealed due to non-compliance. The system was fully operational in the fertiliser industry, but encountered issues in sugar and cement factories, which were being addressed due to technical reasons.

Furthermore, the meeting was informed that raids were being conducted on warehouses nationwide to combat smuggling. The prime minister directed law enforcement agencies to support the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in this endeavour.

PM meets CJ today amid letter controversy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will have a rare meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJ) Qazi Faez Isa today (Thursday) apparently to discuss the startling revelations made by six Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges about interference of intelligence agencies in judicial matters.

"The PM along with Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan will meet with the CJ Qazi Faez Isa and Senior Puisne Judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 pm. Meeting will take place at the SC premises," a senior government official told The Express Tribune.

On Wednesday, the SC held a full-court meeting to discuss the contents of the IHC judges’ letter written to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Tuesday.

Six of the eight IHC judges accused intelligence agencies of using coercive tactics to influence court proceedings.

The judges penned this open letter days after a Supreme Court bench led by Justice Isa set aside an SJC notification that resulted in dismissal of IHC former senior puisne judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui.

Justice Siddiqui in his speech at Rawalpindi bar in July 2018 had also accused an intelligence agency of manipulating IHC proceedings.

A senior lawyer expressed surprise over the CJ meeting with the PM instead of giving an institutional response to the letter.

He also questioned if the senior most judges of the court were holding meetings with the PM after taking into confidence all SC judges.

“CJ Isa should have sought endorsement from all judges before the meeting; otherwise it will not send a good optic for the judiciary as an institution,” he said.

Interestingly, the AGP and the law minister also met with Justice Isa before Wednesday's full-court meeting.

It is learnt that both the officials expressed concern about the timing of the letter, noting that the incidents mentioned in the letter took place last year.

There are reports that the PM will request CJ Isa for conducting an inquiry into the allegations levelled by the six IHC judges as well as former judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui.

Some legal experts believe that Instead of holding a meeting, the PM should have requested the top judge to form an inquiry commission.

They said there is no need for such meetings right now when the country’s largest political party, the PTI, is claiming that they have been a victim of the manipulation of judicial proceedings in the recent past.

Meeting with the head of the executive branch will not send a good message to other superior courts judges who are complaining about interference in their affairs.

A senior lawyer said some superior court judges may strongly react to this meeting

There has been an exemplary relationship between the judiciary and the executive during the term of CJ Isa. The executive authorities are not facing any trouble in any matter.

Abdul Moiz Jafferii advocate said six sitting judges have written to their seniors asking how to complain about what they cannot prove; when it relates to the establishment’s meddling in judicial affairs.

They have then provided details of the incidents that have occurred with each of them, and how they have been failed by their own chief justice, Aamer Farooq.

They have detailed how they brought these to the attention of the former CJ and Justice Isa when he was the senior puisne judge.
Jafferii said this is a desperate measure. It cannot be answered with a commission or a letter.

“Anything less than a suo moto on this issue with the full-court hearing the matter will smell like a cover-up,” he said.

He said the CJ has always remarked how people must bring proof and be specific; otherwise they should not make allegations of such nature.

“He now has as much specificity as is necessary. And six superior court judges [are] willing to submit themselves to an inquiry to back their claims. The claims are simple.

“[They claim] that there is a pervasive and all-encompassing attempt by the intelligence agencies to coerce judges; that such attempts have at times come about to offer support to the side taken by the IHC chief justice and that such attempts have been complained of to both the past and the present CJs.

"I don’t see how this can be brushed under the carpet," he added.

Barrister Asad Rahim Khan said this letter has the potential to be a landmark event in our recent history as, according to him, at no point since its restoration has the judiciary been this marginalised.

“The courage of the IHC judges has lent the judiciary an opportunity to reclaim some space back from the deep state, and bring back some credibility to the justice system," he added.

Former additional attorney general Tariq Mahmood Khokhar said it is futile to have any recourse to the SJC or the executive.

"They lack competence and therefore are not the appropriate forums. Also, the state is perceived to be the problem in the first place and remains as such.

“Many would see it as another cynical whitewashing performance. It cannot possibly redress judges’ grievances. The solution lies within the superior courts and under the existing law," he said.

The role of superior bars will be significant in prevailing situations. Islamabad High Court Bar Association is planning to hold a convention for the support of six IHC judges.

PM to head exit control body

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will head the Cabinet Committee on Exit Control List following its re-constitution on Thursday.

The committee, comprising four members, will have secretarial support from the interior ministry. However, the interior minister will not be the part of the committee. Other three members will be the federal ministers for law, industries and production and human resources.

In its meeting on Thursday, the body approved the inclusion of 24 new names on the no-fly list, while removing the name of PTI leader and senior lawyer Babar Awan.

In another development, PM Shehbaz postponed an emergency meeting of the federal capital, scheduled to be held today (Friday), for a day.

The meeting will now take place on Saturday.

A senior cabinet member told Dawn that the meeting was rescheduled for “no specific reason”.

The huddle was supposed to take up a letter written to the Supreme Judicial Council by six judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), alleging “interference” of intelligence agencies in their work.

Power theft

Separately, chairing a meeting on prevention of electricity theft, PM Shehbaz directed the authorities concerned to take immediate disciplinary action against officers and award exemplary punishment to those abetting the crime that is causing the country billions in losses.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the PM sought a strategy for decreasing line losses and for upgradation of transmission lines.

Terming generation companies “a burden on the national exchequer”, he ordered that work should be started on their privatisation at the earliest. A complete plan for the solarisation of tube wells in Balochistan should be presented, he added.

During the meeting, it was decided to install smart meters on transformers under the public sector development programme. Feeder monitors would be deployed at the feeders that were seeing huge losses.

Visit to Naval HQ

PM Shehbaz also visited the Naval Headquarters, where he lauded the robust response of the Pakistan Navy that foiled a recent terror attack on a naval airbase in Turbat.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “A strong economy holds the key to meeting all the challenges faced by the country”.

The prime minister also laid a wreath at the martyrs’ monument and was introduced to the principal staff officers of Naval Headquarters.

Separately, in a meeting with a delegation of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), PM Shehbaz assured that all issues faced by the journalist community would be resolved and the government would fully support mediapersons in the fulfillment of their responsibilities.

Prime minister reconstitutes Council of Common Interests​


Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif has reconstituted the Council of Common Interests.

The notification to this effect has also been issued after the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to the notification, for the first time in history of the country, the foreign minister has been included in the CCI instead of the finance minister. The chairman of the eight-member Council of Common Interests will be Prime Minister Sharif

The notification issued said the CCI will comprise all four chief ministers as members. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been inducted as a member of the CCI.

According to notification, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Safron Minister Engineer Amir Muqam will also be members of the CCI. The Council of Common Interests has been established from 21st March.

PM vows zero tolerance against smuggling, corruption​


Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the government will not allow any political or bureaucratic interference in its move to curb smuggling, corruption, power theft and tax evasion in the country.

“No political and bureaucratic influence will be allowed to interfere in this major surgery which we have to undertake collectively for the good of Pakistan and its 250 million people,” the prime minister said while chairing a meeting on anti-smuggling.

He said it was very important to understand the real challenges of the country and then immediately fix them to revive and stabilise the economy.

For this, he said all stakeholders including the provinces, institutions, and armed forces will have to collaborate with the federal government to tackle one of the most important challenges of revival of economy.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said illegal trade and smuggling were the biggest challenges that had badly dented the country’s economy.

He recalled that in 2022, the coalition government allowed export of 250,000 tons of sugar, but it had to withdraw its decision “because we were told that the surplus target was not up to that level”. However, he said the same amount of sugar was later exported to Afghanistan.

Similarly, the prime minister pointed out that the country had to face loss of around Rs400 to 500 billion annually in term of power theft, whereas leakages, transmission losses and line losses of electricity were other than that.

With regards to tax revenues, he said the government’s target this year was Rs9 trillion. But it has the potential of collecting Rs4 trillion extra revenues by streamlining the tax system and by curbing corruption and tax evasion, he added.

PM Shehbaz said a tax amount of Rs2.7 trillion was still under litigation either in tribunals or in appellant courts. The government, he said would try its best to recover this amount.

Appreciating the efforts of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir in curbing smuggling and power theft, the prime minister said during the nine months of interim government, an amount of Rs58 billion was saved in power sector.

Similarly, a significant improvement was witnessed in curbing smuggling in the country due to the commitment, will to do, and cooperation of all provinces, and the personal commitment and interest of the army chief, the prime minister added.

Besides initiating reforms in certain sectors, he said the government was also committed to promote industry and agriculture sector in the country.

The premier said the government had chalked out a plan to fully digitise the system of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to boost the tax revenues in the country, adding that well-reputed and honest officers will be encouraged while the corrupt element will be discouraged in this connection.

With regards to law and order situation, the prime minister said the government was determined to foil the evil designs of the enemy.

PM Shehbaz conveys to Biden Pakistan’s willingness to work with US for int’l peace, regional prosperity​

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday responded to US President Joe Biden’s letter and said Pakistan was willing to work with the United States on the shared targets of international peace and regional security.

Biden had written to felicitate PM Shehbaz on Friday, assuring that Washington would continue to stand with Pakistan to tackle “the most pressing global and regional challenges”. In his first communication with the new administration, the US president had noted that the “enduring partnership between our nations remains critical to ensuring the security of our people — and people around the world”.

Interestingly, Biden had not had a similar communication with former prime minister Imran Khan when the US president assumed office.

In his response to the US president’s letter today, released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the premier said: “Pakistan is willing to work with the US towards a common goal of global peace and security and development and prosperity of the region.”

He said Pakistan attached “key importance” to its relations with the US, adding that the two countries were jointly working together on important initiatives regarding the energy, climate change, agriculture, health and education sectors.

PM Shehbaz said that cooperation in the energy sector and Green Alliance Framework initiative between the two countries was welcome.

Experts had noted that Biden’s letter did not congratulate PM Shehbaz for assuming power or winning the election.

At a recent Congressional hearing, senior US diplomat Donald Lu had been asked whether Washington recognised the new government in Pakistan.

The question, posed by Representative Tim Burchett, was based on allegations of rigging and reports of irregularities in the recent February 8 elections. US lawmakers and the State Department have repeatedly called for a thorough probe into the claims, while Lu suggested that the Election Commission of Pakistan may want to “re-do” some of the contests.

However, in his response at the time, Lu had clarified that the “US does not go around recognising new governments”, rather it just worked with the regime in power at the time.

Last month, a cohort of US Democratic lawmakers had written to Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging them to refrain from recognising the new government in Pakistan until allegations of election rigging were thoroughly investigated.

In first foreign trip since election, PM Shehbaz to leave for S Arabia tomorrow​


Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on Saturday (tomorrow) on a three-day official visit, during the last days of Ramadan.

This would be the prime minister’s first foreign visit since his assuming the office. Ministers for foreign affairs, defence, finance, information and economic affairs will accompany him during his visit from April 6 to 8. He will perform Umrah and offer prayers at the Masjid e Nabwi Al-Sharif, the Foreign Office confirmed.

PM Shehbaz is expected to meet his Saudi Arabian counterpart Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and discuss issues of mutual interest. They will also exchange views on regional and global developments.

Meanwhile, sources told Geo News that during the meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, PM Shehbaz would hold discussions on various projects.

The premier would also renew his invitation to the Saudi PM to visit Pakistan.

During his stay, multiple development projects would be finalised, whereas bilateral cooperation in several sectors including agriculture continues between the two countries, said the sources.

They said Saudi Arabia was expected to invest $1 billion on the Reko Diq project as well.

Prior to his visit, the premier would hold consultation with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in Lahore, they added.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar confirmed on Friday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave for Saudi Arabia on Saturday (tomorrow).

The minister, in a statement issued on Friday, said this would be the first foreign visit of the prime minister since his election to the PM’s office on March 4.

Tarar said that PM Shehbaz Sharif would use a commercial flight for the purpose. The prime minister and members of his delegation would bear their travel expenses, the minister added.

As per details, during his three-day visit to the kingdom, PM Shehbaz Sharif is expected to hold meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on various projects and collaborations.

PM urges acceleration in nationwide anti-smuggling drive​


Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reiterated the resolve to purge the country of smuggling during a meeting on Friday, directing the authorities concerned to accelerate the nationwide drive against the menace.

Chairing a high-level meeting aimed at curbing smuggling, the premier paid tribute to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir for his full cooperation with the government in his efforts against smuggling.

A report from the investigation committee, headed by AD Khawaja, was also presented during the meeting. The prime minister commended the committee for identifying the elements involved in the misuse of Afghan Transit Trade for smuggling, as well as the officers facilitating them.

He was informed that a list of smugglers, hoarders, and their facilitating officers had been forwarded to law enforcement agencies and provincial governments.

PM Shehbaz directed the removal of identified officers from their respective posts and initiate disciplinary proceedings against them. He also asked the LEAs and intelligence agencies to cooperate with each other to curb the smuggling.


Calling for the punishment of smugglers and drug dealers, the prime minister instructed the law ministry to immediately enact necessary legislation for this purpose.

Emphasising no leniency for those who loot public funds and their facilitators, PM Shehbaz directed measures to provide alternative earning opportunities and a conducive atmosphere for youths living in frontier regions.

He stressed the need for more swift and effective monitoring of the sale and smuggling of Afghan Transit Trade goods in the country, and called for a third-party audit of the monitoring system.

Key decisions taken to reduce electricity prices, minimise power theft: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday the government was pursuing agenda of economic reforms in the country and the elements involved in deep-rooted menace of corruption and criminal negligence would be held accountable.

He was chairing a meeting of federal cabinet at the PM House on Friday.

Referring to the track and trace system agreement made in 2019, the prime minister said this system was nothing but a cruel joke to the nation as no improvement was seen in the sectors of tobacco, cement, sugar and fertiliser.

He said the agreement was totally a fraud as even no penalty clause was included in it. He said he had ordered to form an inquiry committee which would present its report within 72 hours.

Prime Minister Sharif said the government was rigorously pursuing the agenda of economic reforms to steer the country out of prevailing challenges. He said the reports of international financial institutions and journals showing positive and upward trajectory about Pakistan's economy was a testimony to the prudent policies of the government.

The prime minister said country's IT exports had been recorded at all-time high, foreign remittances and overall exports of the country had also witnessed surge and credit of all this goes to the sitting government.

He said foreign investment from friendly countries including Saudi Arabia was also increasing, which would have positive impact on country's economy.

As regards the macroeconomic indicators, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the collective performance of both incumbent and the interim governments.

He said according to a recently published report on Pakistan economy, many indicators including IT export, remittances, and capital market were showing positive results due to prudent policies of the government.

However, he maintained, a lot of work needed to be done. The government will perform ‘major surgical operation’ to get rid of the deep-rooted flaws in the country’s economy, he added.

PM Sharif said he had completed the power sector review in four phases in which important decisions were taken to minimise power theft and line losses, and to reduce prices of electricity. Besides, he said, the government had also decided in principle to divest the distribution companies (DISCOs).

He said the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had obsolete systems which needed to be replaced to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio. He pointed out that the FBR had the potential to earn extra revenue worth hundreds of billions of rupees by implementing reforms in its system.

“We have to take tough decisions in larger interest of the country and we will fully monitor the implementation phase,” the prime minister remarked.

As regards privatisation of the state-owned entities (SOEs), the prime minister assured that the process would be done without delay and in a transparent manner.

PM Shehbaz asks industrialists to prioritise improving conditions of labour class

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said that they were fully cognizant of the value of the labourers and workers in the national economy and stressed upon the wealthy, businessmen, investors and industrialists to prioritise improving the conditions of the workers.

Addressing a gathering of labourers and workers from different sectors at his residence in connection with the observance of International Labour Day, the prime minister said that country’s economic situation was challenging but they were striving to turn it around, with collectively efforts and sincerity.

He said that Pakistan would soon become a powerful country through a functioning of a fair system and on the basis of hard work by the employers and the employees including workers.

The prime minister said that the government was striving to bring about substantial changes in the national economy and to recover billion of rupees being wasted due to corruption.

Referring to his recent visit from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, he said that the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other leadership desired to see Pakistan moving on the path of progress.

The Saudi business and investors’ delegation would soon visit Pakistan which would increase businesses and job opportunities in the country, he added.

PM Shehbaz further said that in the upcoming fiscal budget, they would try to provide further relief to the labour class.

Calling upon the business people and well to do class, the prime minister said that they should also think beyond their families and businesses and invest in certain education and health projects for the deprived classes like those established in the developed countries.

“It was not an objective behind the creation of Pakistan that there would be a difference between the rich and the poor. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah led the massive movement in which the people had offered huge sacrifices. The motive was the establishment of a welfare state in which everyone would have the equal opportunities to excel in life on the basis of one’s capacity and ability and take the country forward,” he added.

The prime minister reiterated that they were striving to end corruption and promised that all the organs of government and other state institutions, with their collective efforts, would carve a niche for Pakistan among the comity of nations.

He said that the labourers and workers worked hard in the most difficult conditions and helped their employers generate their businesses. Both were like the wheels of the same carriage and their work lead to progress and prosperity of the nation and country.

He said if the workers were deprived of their due rights, a country could not achieve progress.

The prime minister opined that due to price hike and inflation, the life for the common man had become hard.

The prices of petroleum products had been reduced but it could not be a substitute for the daily price hike as the labour class had to meet the requirements of education for their sons and daughters, treatment for their parents, and other daily expenditures and were living from hand to mouth, he observed.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that under the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Prophet’s (Peace Be Upon Him) messages, it was their abiding duty to bridge the differences between the rich and the poor.

The prime minister recollected that his father was also a worker who attained his earlier education in Amritsar and during 30s settled in Lahore, where he worked along with his brothers in a steel factory.

He also recited Dr Allama Iqbal’s verse about plight of labourers and workers and said that these couplets represented a powerful message, reflecting voice of millions of workers in Pakistan.

The labour day started after Chicago incident and then the movement became global, he said, adding that the Quranic teachings and the Seerah of Holy Prophet (PBUH) highlighted the value of hard work.

The prime minister also welcomed the workers and labourers at his residence and said that he felt immense pleasure in hosting them at the residence of late Mian Muhammad Sharif.

Earlier, Chairman PM Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan highlighted the personal loan scheme for the deserving children of workers and said that under prime minister’s tenure as chief minister of Punjab, Danish schools and Educational Endowment Funds were established.

Situationer: Breaking an unholy nexus

The prime minister’s recent decision to dismiss over two dozen top officers from Pakistan Customs and the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) following allegations of compromised integrity and competence by intelligence agencies has sparked widespread discontent among the officers.

The officers are now voicing concerns over the alleged harassment and media trial, warning of its detrimental impact on achieving revenue targets just two months before the close of the fiscal year.

The crackdown targets Grade 21 and 22 officers, identified in reports from three intelligence agencies as key figures in a system allegedly facilitating extensive smuggling and revenue loss.

It was finally concluded at the highest level that any strategy to counter smuggling cannot succeed in the presence of Customs’ institutionalised money collection from across the country.

PM’s initiative to tackle Customs corruption will succeed only if FBR’s covert corrupt practices are consistently exposed

The government has now sidelined all senior Customs officers suspected of having been involved or associated with the racket facilitating smuggling and massive under-invoicing, which caused alarming revenue losses. The intelligence agencies finally uncovered the secret mechanisms of moneymaking and revenue losses in the FBR field formations.

Three members of Customs (operations) have been thrown out of their offices in a row. Such members have been traditionally at the highest level of a mechanism that entailed organised revenue machinery from the ports to borders covering Customs collectorates and stations.

The members of Customs operations have traditionally been building teams of puppet officers for the top moneymaking positions in Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar, and they have been capitalising on each moment of their tenure at the position without any oversight or monitoring mechanisms. The rampant corruption of three Customs collectors in Karachi, which has been taken cognisance of in the recent past, was the result of this unchecked greed at the highest level in the FBR.

Going forward, if the government fails to institute oversight mechanisms for these top Customs slots after the present shakeup, all the efforts made to counter smuggling and revenue evasion facilitated by Customs collectors chosen by the members for the task are likely to go down the drain.

The tax evading importers are known to be paying heavy amounts at scores of Customs checkpoints on the highway from Karachi to the urban centres of Punjab to keep the hands of Customs officers deployed on the highway off their misdeclaration and under-invoicing frauds committed at Karachi ports with the active connivance of Customs collectors and their chosen teams.

There are two points from which signals for all this revenue fraud emanate — the offices of member Customs (operations) and the director general of Customs intelligence, both situated among power corridors in Islamabad.

The position of DG Customs intelligence has always been a posting won by the senior Customs officers through a stiff competition between the aspiring officers’ political connections and their business community networks. The DG does not owe his posting to the FBR chairman or member Customs operations. He bypasses the member Customs operations and reports directly to FBR chief, who is normally an IRS man.

This administrative arrangement gives the DG Customs intelligence a big leverage to run a parallel Customs state. Instead of collecting intelligence on Customs collectors’ potential connivance in promoting smuggling and valuation frauds and the legal and procedural flaws leading to massive revenue leakages, the DG himself can jump into the revenue loss game because he faces intense pressures from the supporters of his posting to return the rewards.

On a deeper investigation, intelligence agencies may find that the formations of Customs intelligence scattered across the country have become a prominent licensor of smuggling and tax evasion.

The offices of Customs intelligence leave their actual and vital job of intelligence collection on the mechanisms and methods of the promotion of smuggling and tax evasion. Instead, they resort to “selective” anti-smuggling actions by seizing the goods of petty persons and by receiving mutually agreed-upon heavy monthlies from the actual and big smugglers. This helps them build fictitious performance figures.

The black sheep in the FBR’s Customs department extort heavy amounts of money for not registering FIRs and thus minimising the heavy costs of smuggling in the cases in which the Customs law requires them to register FIRs.

Customs officers posted at points of clearance of imported goods extract big sums in return for allowing the provisional release of imports at under-invoiced values. The provision of Customs law dealing with the provisional release of imported goods is one of the greatest routes to riches for Customs officers.

The smuggling of transit goods destined for Afghanistan back into Pakistan provides the Customs department a superior and sought-after opportunity to make billions of rupees every month. There is, interestingly, a positive correlation between the quantum of transit imports in Karachi and the moneymaking inclinations in the offices of member Customs operations and the director general of Customs intelligence. One side of the correlation proves the other.

The prime minister’s fresh initiative to make the Customs department realise that the government knows and is looking at its misdeeds is likely to deliver dividends only if secret mechanisms of corrupt practices in the FBR and its field formations are secretly monitored and continuously busted.

However, to cut the tax department’s pervasive corrupt culture from its roots, an out-of-the-box solution is to replace, to begin with, Customs officers of Grades 21 and 22 sitting in the positions of member Customs operations, DG Customs intelligence and the chief collectors of Customs with the Pakistan Administrative Service officers chosen based on integrity. This could bring up the needed surprise in revenue collection in the country.

Earlier in the day, a crucial piece of evidence emerged shedding light on a brewing conflict between the federal and provincial governments, posing a significant threat to the agricultural sector.

In its investigation, the high-level inquiry committee, formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, found a letter which was penned by the Secretary of Food, Punjab, addressing the Secretary of National Food Security.

On March 25, 2024, the Punjab government took a decisive step by addressing a letter to the Secretary of National Food Security, urging the immediate halt of wheat imports totaling 2.6 million tonnes.

Despite the letter, prohibiting the Secretary of National Food Security from procuring wheat, the federal government proceeded to import a staggering 8.5 million tons of grain.

The Punjab’s Food Secretary in the letter opposes the continuation of wheat imports, citing the already alarming import figure of 3.4 million tons and the potential surplus it would create in the market.

Moreover, the letter underscores Punjab’s substantial wheat stocks, currently standing at 2.2 million tons. This fi could exacerbate the surplus dilemma if not addressed promptly, which can negatively impact the local farmers.

With Punjab’s wheat production area expanding from 16 million to 17.4 million acres and production estimates soaring from 21.3 million to 24.2 million tonnes, the influx of imported wheat threatens to disrupt the delicate balance of supply and demand, plunging farmers into financial crisis.

In the letter, the food secretary highlighted the stark contrast with Punjab’s wheat procurement efforts last year amounted to 4 million tons. Yet, due to the inundation of imported wheat in the market, the release of Punjab’s wheat stocks may be restricted to a mere 1.8 million tons, exacerbating concerns over market equilibrium and farmer welfare.

Furthermore, Punjab’s substantial wheat stock, valued at Rs 80 billion, poses a financial burden compounded by accruing interest.

This is proper mafia scam. The caretaker govt was extension of Establishment with a nominal head SS and other crooks like Kakar and Naqvi. They made billions at the expense of the poor farmers and the quality of the wheat isn't good enough to be fed to cattle. Establishment has banned twitter and is looking to target all the other social media platforms because that allows him to make billions and no one will know.
