PM Shehbaz announces 100,000 free laptops for students

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday announced that 100,000 free laptops will be distributed among talented students across the country strictly on merit.

Addressing an event in Islamabad marking International Youth Day, the Prime Minister said the laptops would go to high-achieving students based solely on their academic performance.

“This government believes in transparency and merit, and we will ensure both in the distribution process,” he said.

The distribution will cover all four provinces, the federal capital Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Referring to Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, the Prime Minister said Pakistan’s victory on May 10 against a numerically larger and “vainglorious” enemy had instilled new vigour in the nation. He urged the youth to build on this spirit and strive for excellence to bring pride to the country.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to empowering young people through education and technology, PM Shehbaz said the country’s future lies in the hands of its youth.

He also congratulated the nation on Independence Day and praised the role of minorities and all segments of society in the creation and progress of Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz departs for SCO summit in China, ‘looks forward’ to meeting President Xi

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday he looked forward to meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping along with other world leaders as he departed for China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The SCO summit, to be held in the northern port city of China’s Tianjin on Sunday and Monday, will gather more than 20 world leaders in a powerful show of Global South solidarity, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and India’s PM Narendra Modi.

Terming his visit “historic”, PM Shehbaz said on X today: “I look forward to meeting H.E. President Xi Jinping and other world leaders to further build upon our bilateral ties with China, our All Weather Strategic Cooperative Partner, as well as with other key countries of the region […]”

The premier expressed his aim to “enhance regional cooperation, strengthen multilateralism, and advance shared goals for peace and prosperity”.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa), the prime minister would hold meetings with President Xi and Premier Li Qiang, “during which multifaceted dimensions of Pakistan-China bilateral cooperation would be discussed”.

“He would also attend the military parade with President Xi and other world leaders being held in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the World’s Anti-Fascist War,” the Mofa added.

PM Shehbaz, as per the statement, would “interact with reputed Chinese businessmen and corporate executives to discuss bilateral trade, economic and investment ties”. He would also address a Pakistan-China B2B Investment Conference in Beijing.

The statement highlighted that the visit was a part of leadership-level exchanges between the two countries.

“It manifests the importance attached by the two countries to further deepen their All Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, reaffirm support on issues of respective core interests, advance Phase-II of CPEC and maintain regular communication on important regional and global developments,” Mofa said.

Leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia have been invited to the 25th SCO Heads of State Council.

The summit will also feature Modi’s first visit to China in more than seven years as the two neighbours work on further defusing tensions roiled by deadly border clashes in 2020.

Last week, the government said that PM Shehbaz’s visit to China will mark the formal launch of the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC-II), focused on industrial cooperation, after a delay of about five years.

“Prime minister’s upcoming visit will mark the formal launch of CPEC Phase-II, with both sides expected to set clear priorities and agree on tangible, measurable outcomes,” an official announcement had said, quoting Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, focal person on the multi-billion-dollar bilateral initiative.

In July, the two countries decided to form technical working groups to explore and implement projects focusing on high-yield cotton seed development, advanced water-saving irrigation technologies, and modern farming techniques.

SCO is an important meeting and PM should attend despite the bad situation at home.

This is just nonsense-No you don't. They can use Teams or Zoom in this situation. The country is under Water. Bar a few platitudes nothing comes of these. If the number of meetings attended is a barometer of our success, we would have the most amazing country in the World.

This is what happens when you dont have a mandate and never have to worry about getting one. On her return to PK from her holiday, crooked Nani went into straight into a meeting- all good so far but according to Najam Sethi, they discussed how to kill IK and Munirs extension as the Quid pro quo. This is an evil, souless, group worried about their power. This visit in that light shows how much they are out of touch with the public

look at this... PM and vice PM walking behind Munir Sahab, holding hands with the Iranian foreign minister.

These ghulaams will always walk behind them and they want us to be GHULAAMS as well... ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Pakistan’s army generals love to remind the people and the democratic politicians just how powerless they are by these antics. There was no need to send both at an event only to humiliate the PM’s position like that.

Imran Khan would never allow the PM to become a lapdog for army generals

What a clown, he is a PM of a country.
FYI I’m not trolling Citizens of Pakistan, my calling out is just for British Pakistanis that kept harping about Indians bending over for West.
I’m sure majority citizens of Pak would hate this as obvious in the comments on twitter of PMO and this handle.

I don’t see any Indian PM or even CM or even Mayor indulging in such an action.

For all the mocking that @KingKhanWC you do towards Indian citizens the PM of Pakistan actually takes the Cake “Literally “

Both Indian and Pakistani current , governments, rulers , establishments are a joke , sell outs and puppets . Only a fool believes these two countries go to war , hostile , proxy killings are for the people . Both use nationalism , religion etc to control , brainwash while they put into policies to make big money for those in real power , foreign banks , military industry to fraud , corruption , market manipulation, the list goes on. You’ll never see me defending any Pakistani leaders or generals . Imran khan is different not because he was a great politician, he’s terrible. He was unique because there was no Personal gain and no slavery to foreign powers . Indians claim to be smarter but their country has become more extreme then even Pakistan , they literally elected religious nut jobs .

It’s not the rulers , it’s the people . Pakistanis are more likely to see true independence before Indians because most see through the bs , Indians fall for it . Pakistanis just can’t ever independently choose their rulers in a rigged system . If you think modi and rss is the best India can find to govern , you’re disrespecting your own country

Pakistan, UAE vow closer cooperation across sectors during UAE president’s visit

Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates on Friday reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining close coordination on matters of mutual interest and underscored the need to enhance bilateral trade during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s first official visit to Pakistan.

President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in Pakistan on the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and was accorded a warm and cordial welcome. A formation of JF-17 fighter jets escorted the royal aircraft as it entered Pakistani airspace.

The UAE president was received at Nur Khan Airbase by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Senior cabinet members and government officials were also present.

During the visit, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed held substantive talks with PM Shehbaz. According to a statement issued after the meetings, the discussions focused on “further strengthening the longstanding fraternal relations between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.”

“The two leaders reviewed the progress achieved in ongoing areas of cooperation and explored avenues to deepen engagement across a wide range of sectors,” the statement said.

Both sides underscored the importance of expanding collaboration in economic cooperation, investment, energy, infrastructure development, information technology, technology and people-to-people exchanges. They also agreed on the need to enhance bilateral trade, which, the statement noted, “has great potential for mutually beneficial growth.”

The leaders also exchanged views on key regional and international developments and reaffirmed their “shared commitment to continue close coordination on matters of mutual interest.”

Expressing satisfaction over the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, the two leaders reiterated their determination to work closely to advance shared objectives of peace, stability and sustainable development.

“The visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will further consolidate the deep brotherly ties between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates and contribute to the strengthening of their strategic partnership,” the statement added.

PM Shehbaz vows closer ties

Later, in a message on X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the meeting as adding to the warmth and festivities as the New Year approaches.

“It was a pleasure to welcome my dear brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, on an official visit to Pakistan, adding to the warmth and festivities as we enter the New Year together,” the prime minister said.

“We held most cordial and constructive talks, during which we reflected on the many facets of our wide-ranging bilateral cooperation, as well as efforts for peace and prosperity,” he added.

The prime minister further said that Pakistan was “proud of its longstanding, deep-rooted, fraternal ties with the UAE that are getting stronger under the patronage of my dear brother His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.”

This marks President Nahyan's second trip to Pakistan this year, following an earlier meeting with Shehbaz in Rahim Yar Khan in January.

Earlier, the Foreign Office said in a statement that the visit offers a significant opportunity to further deepen the longstanding fraternal relationship between the two nations.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz welcomed the UAE president's visit, saying relations between Pakistan and the UAE are "timeless and exemplary." She expressed pride that the UAE president chose Pakistan for his first official visit.

Pakistan and the UAE maintain diplomatic, economic, and cultural connections, reinforced by historical bonds and a substantial Pakistani diaspora in the Emirates. The UAE ranks among Pakistan's major trading partners and serves as a vital source of remittances, with a large Pakistani workforce employed across various sectors in the Gulf state.

Earlier this week, Shehbaz expressed Pakistan's interest in attracting greater UAE investment in sectors such as energy, minerals, information technology, railways, and aviation during discussions with UAE Ambassador Zaabi.

On Friday, the Islamabad district administration declared a local holiday in the capital to accommodate the visit, though essential services including hospitals, law enforcement, municipal operations, and utility providers continued normal operations.

Islamabad Police announced traffic diversions on the Expressway and Murree Road/Club Road from 11.00am to 3.00pm due to the visit. Commuters travelling on the Expressway from Rawat were advised to use the Rawalpindi-Peshawar Road instead, while those on IJP Road and Srinagar Highway were directed to use inner-city service roads.

Police also recommended leaving an extra 20 to 25 minutes for travel and deployed traffic officers across the city to assist citizens.

In April, the two nations signed several memoranda of understanding covering cultural cooperation, consular affairs coordination, and the establishment of a UAE-Pakistan Joint Business Council linking their respective chambers of commerce.

PM Shehbaz holds briefing with JI on geopolitical tensions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held an in-camera briefing with a Jamat-e-Islami delegation led by Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Thursday at the Prime Minister’s Office to discuss the current geopolitical situation, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

The delegation included Liaqat Baloch, Mian Muhammad Aslam, and Asif Luqman Qazi.

The PMO said the delegation received an in-camera briefing on the current situation in Afghanistan, Iran, the Middle East, and the Gulf region. “The delegation was informed about Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and initiatives,” the statement added.

Officials also briefed the delegation on steps taken by Pakistani embassies in Iran and Gulf countries to facilitate Pakistani citizens.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Azeem Nazir Tarar, Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Rana Mubashir Iqbal, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, the PMO confirmed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also held a meeting with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi in Islamabad on Thursday, Radio Pakistan reported. During the meeting, the current political situation and matters related to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were discussed.

On Wednesday, a high-level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was held in Islamabad to discuss current geopolitical tensions in the region with all major parties and leaders from both sides of the aisle in attendance. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf skipped the meeting.

The meeting included a detailed briefing to ensure parliamentary leaders were fully informed of the country’s foreign policy approach and regional security stance, said the PMO.

"A detailed briefing was also given to the parliamentary leaders in the meeting, highlighting Pakistan's diplomatic efforts during the recent tensions. The parliamentary leaders of the political parties expressed their views openly. The participants emphasised the need for national unity, consensus and solidarity in the current situation," Radio Pakistan reported.

Regional tensions

Pakistan and Afghanistan have clashed along the frontier since last week, when Afghanistan launched a border offensive in response to Pakistani air strikes. 'Operation Ghazab Lil Haq' was launched late on Thursday after renewed clashes along the border, when Afghan Taliban forces fired on multiple locations, prompting swift military retaliation.

Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of failing to act against terrorist groups that carry out attacks in Pakistan, which the Taliban government rejects. The border fighting has hit multiple Afghan provinces. The violence of recent days is the worst since the October fighting killed more than 70 people on both sides, with land borders between the neighbours largely shut since.

The meeting also discussed the escalation of conflict in the Gulf after the US and Israel continued their military strikes on Iran, following a joint operation on Saturday that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. Iran said schools and hospitals have also been targeted, killing hundreds of civilians.

In the opening wave of attacks, about 163 girls were killed when a school in southern Iran was struck by Israeli-US strikes.

Tehran responded by targeting Israel, as well as American military assets across the region, disrupting commercial travel, disrupting oil routes, and sending global energy prices higher.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it struck more than 500 US and Israeli locations using 700 drones along with hundreds of missiles.
