Shehbaz Sharif returns to Pakistan amid coronavirus crisis

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Didn't this guy come back to help the nation fight Corona? Why complain and blame the govt for acquiring it then?

Only if ethics would allow to celebrate the day

So PML-N is blaming NAB and govt for this. Doesn't this have to do with Shehbaz Sharif's arrest which is bound to happen anytime now as he knows he is caught. One last attempt is to declare that he is now a COVID-19 patient and blame NAB and PMIK for it. Even if he is really COVID-19 positive, doesn't that indicate that it is actually his party members, servants etc who gave it to him, rather than NAB, as the NAB office barely had anyone in there and there were barely any people inside NAB, unlike a a courthouse that always have people around.

One last desperate attempt to be not persecuted, but everyone knows PML-N's bluff. Also, is Khaqan Abbasi, Mariyam Aurangzeb gonna blame NAB and PMIK for their COVId-19 positive result.

I think this all bogus. He is playing COVID card to bash the government and avoid going to NAB. 2 birds one stone win win...

Off course its bogus. As soon as he admitted that his family are crooks he was hoping to shift the blame onto them and run off but Shazad Akbar has done a sterling job and nailed him. Its a shame the leader of NAB is a crook who helps to protect these crooks but all the while does nothing.

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has advised PML-N President and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif, to undergo his coronavirus test from Shaukat Khanum Hospital or the Agha Khan Laboratory other than Chughtai Laboratories, reported The News.

NAB sources while rejecting allegations levelled by PML-N leaders that Shehbaz contracted coronavirus during his appearance before NAB’s Combined Investigation Team, said all safety protocols were adopted during the PML-N leader’s appearance.

Moreover, NAB expressed reservations over Shehbaz testing positive for COVID-19 in a single night.

Sources added that Shehbaz was due in an accountability court on Thursday and charges were to be framed against him but it could not happen. They added the whole episode was doubtful and needed an explanation.

PML-N leaders, while addressing a press conference on Thursday, had said Prime Minister Imran Khan and NAB would be held responsible if anything happened to Shehbaz after the party confirmed the former Punjab chief minister tested positive for COVID-19.

PML-N representative Ata Tarar said that despite informing NAB several times that Shehabaz was a cancer survivor and was at risk from COVID-19, he was summoned by the anti-graft body.

"This was a well thought out plan to put the lives of all these people [PML-N leaders] in danger," he said, blaming the 'NAB-Niazi nexus' for putting Sharif at risk of contracting coronavirus.

PML-N leader Azma Bokhari said Shehbaz came back to face everything. "Did Nawaz and Maryam Nawaz not return after the decision was taken [against them]," asked Bokhari.

"Did Shehbaz Sharif not return to the country? He came back to face everything," she added, saying that PM Imran's ego had still not been satisfied.

Bokhari rejected allegations that the party had not taken proper precautions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that the PML-N had not held any public gathering even when it planned on pushing for protests against the government this year as it considered 2020 the "year of the election".

NAB challenges bail granted to Shahbaz in assets case

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has opposed the pre-arrest bail granted to Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif in an inquiry of illegal assets against him and requested the Lahore High Court to dismiss the petition of the politician.

A two-judge bench had on June 3 allowed pre-arrest bail to Mr Shahbaz and restrained the NAB from arresting him till June 17. One day before he was granted the bail, a team of the bureau had raided his Model Town residence to arrest him, however, returned unsuccessful after several hours.

As the bench is set to resume its hearing on Wednesday (today), the NAB on Tuesday filed its written reply challenging the bail petition.

The bureau states that petitioner Mr Shahbaz is beneficiary of assets held in the name of his family members and benamidars, who have no sources to acquire such assets.

It alleges that the family members and benamidars of the petitioner received fake foreign remittances of Rs1.218 billion in their personal bank accounts. Apart from the said foreign remittances, Rs375.695 million was laundered by way foreign pay orders, which were deposited with personal bank account of co-suspect Suleman Shahbaz, the son of the petitioner.

The reply further alleges that the petitioner and his family members have managed disappearance of some of their co-suspects (associates/employees) namely Haroon Yousaf Aziz, Ali Ahmad Khan, Syed Muhammad Tahir Naqvi and Muhammad Usman.

It states some of the co-suspects namely Hamza Shahbaz, son of the petitioner, Nisar Ahmad, Qasim Qayum, Rashid Karamat, Masroor Anwar, Fazal Dad Abbasi, Shoaib Qamar, Muhammad Mushtaq (approver), Shahid Rafique (approver) and Aftab Mehmood (approver) were arrested only after hectic efforts.

The reply points out that none of the family members of the petitioner have come up to explain the source of remittances, relation with the remitters or even the recognition of the remitter.

Whereas, the so-called business investors/remitters have categorically denied to have sent the foreign remittances to the family members of the petitioner, which establishes that the petitioner and his co-suspects are involved in money laundering.

The NAB maintains that the petitioner (being beneficiary) and his co-suspect family members failed to justify the claimed sources of funds, which are stated to have been used for acquisition of assets. It says the petitioner himself failed to cooperate with the investigation as he has not provided details of sources of funds for acquiring four properties in London, details of business income and agricultural income and details of benami companies.

The NAB argues that the custody of Mr Shahbaz is warranted with the commission of offences of corruption and corrupt practices as envisaged under the provisions of National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and money laundering as delineated in Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010.

It alleges that the petitioner has been trying to frustrate and hamper the investigation proceedings and there is a likelihood of his fleeing from the country as his one son Suleman has already been declared proclaimed offender due to continuous absconding.

Shehbaz family received Rs1.59b as remittances: NAB

In a recent report, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has alleged that the entire family of the PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif – including his wife, two sons and two daughters – received millions of rupees from abroad as a result of alleged money laundering.

According to the report, Shehbaz family received from abroad remittances mostly in US dollars equivalent to Rs1.59 billion. Shehbaz’s wife Nusrat received $49,680 while his son Suleman Shehbaz received $2,06,996.

Shahbaz files plea for exemption from appearance

LAHORE: Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Monday filed a civil miscellaneous application before the Lahore High Court seeking exemption from personal appearance in hearing of his pre-arrest bail in assets beyond means investigation by the NAB.

Mr Shahbaz also urged a division bench, which will resume hearing on the bail petition on Tuesday (today), to extend his bail.

On previous hearing, the bench had asked Shahbaz to get his fresh Covid-19 test conducted from Punjab Institute of Public Health Sciences.

In the fresh application filed through counsel Amjad Pervez, Mr Shahbaz said the court had directed the head of the institute to conduct his test. However, he said, unfortunately no one from the institute contacted him for the test but to establish his bonafide he got his test conducted from a private laboratory, which turned negative.

The PML-N president said although he recovered from the Covid-19, he was still undergoing fatigue as he was an old man. He said he had been living in self-isolation at home under the supervision of doctors of Ittefaq Hospital who advised him to undergo multiple tests of corona antibodies.

Mr Shahbaz pleaded that under such circumstances it will be highly risky for him to expose to public place. Therefore, he asked the court to allow him exemption from personal appearance and extend his pre-arrest bail for three weeks.

LHC extends Shehbaz Sharif’s interim bail till July 23

The Lahore High Court (LHC) extended on Thursday the interim bail of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif till July 23.

Shehbaz had appeared before the court in the National Accountably Bureau’s (NAB’s) money laundering and assets beyond means case.

The PML-N leader was welcomed by a large number of party supporters, who remained outside the LHC premises till the hearing went on.

On July 14, NAB initiated more inquiries and investigations against a number of high-profile individuals, including Shehbaz Sharif and his brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

NAB issued a statement after its executive board meeting (EBM) that was chaired by Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, and attended by the watchdog’s senior officials – NAB deputy chairman, prosecutor general accountability and director-general operations.

According to the statement, the participants of the meeting approved starting ‘investigations’ against Nawaz and others. However, the statement did not elaborate on the allegations against the PML-N supreme leader, who has already been convicted for corruption by a NAB court.

NAB said the EBM also authorised inquiries against Shehbaz and former minister Sartaj Aziz – but again it did not explain their nature.

However, according to APP, the investigations and inquiries have been started against the PML-N leaders in view of their alleged misuse of authority.

The graft-buster also announced to close an investigation against Shehbaz, former secretary to Punjab chief minister Javed Mehmood, Lahore Development Authority former director general Ahad Khan Cheema, and others due to absence of evidence.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has said the present opposition is the most responsible in the history of the country.

Shehbaz made these remarks during a video conference with British High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner where the two discussed various issues of mutual interest.

Speaking about the current political atmosphere in the country, Shehbaz said the present opposition was the most responsible one in the country’s history and was playing a constructive role.

“The welfare of the people should be the government’s top priority. The current economic challenges are worrisome but the opposition will continue to fulfill its constitutional responsibility,” the PML-N leader remarked.

Shehbaz added that his party [PML-N] successfully defeated the monster of terrorism, solved the energy crisis. “This is the time to move forward, not confront one another,” he said.

Turner praised Shehbaz's performance and said that the Department for International Development (DFID) and British assistance projects were completed [during PML-N's tenure].

He added that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the UK is committed about its development programmes in Pakistan and would continue to work towards common development goals.

LAHORE: An accountability court on Friday issued preliminary notices to Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif, his family members and all other suspects in a money-laundering reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Presiding Judge Jawadul Hassan also directed the NAB investigating officer to inform the court on Aug 27, the next hearing, about those suspects who had not joined the investigation or were not arrested.

A total of 20 people had been nominated in the reference and they include four approvers Yasir Mushtaq, Muhammad Mushtaq, Shahid Rafiq and Aftab Mahmood.

The main suspects are Mr Shahbaz’s wife Nusrat Shahbaz, his sons Hamza Shahbaz (leader of opposition in Punjab) and Suleman Shahbaz (absconder), and his daughters Rabia Imran and Javeria Ali.

Other suspects are alleged benamidars and business partners of the family including Nisar Ahmad, Qasim Qayum, Rashid Karamat, Masroor Anwar, Fazal Dad Abbasi and Shoaib Qamar.

The reference mainly accused Mr Shahbaz of being beneficiary of assets held in the name of his family members and benamidars who had no sources to acquire such assets. It said the suspects committed offences of corruption and corrupt practices as envisaged under the provisions of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and money laundering as delineated in the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010. It asked the trial court to try the suspects and punish them under the law.

Mr Shahbaz is on pre-arrest bail granted by the Lahore High Court. Hamza is on judicial remand while Suleman has been declared absconder as he failed to return from London.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said on Saturday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s departure to London for medical treatment caused a great setback to the narrative of the ruling PTI, as well as the process of accountability.

The federal minister took to Twitter, saying that approaching the British government for the return of the PML-N supremo and an inquiry into medical reports were steps in the right direction.

“Those who played a role in the preparation of the fake reports, they should be turned into examples,” said the minister in the cryptic post.

Earlier on Friday, Minister for Information Shibli Faraz had vowed that the government "will bring back Nawaz Sharif using all legal means that are available".

Faraz said that the government will approach the National Accountability Bureau, which will in turn ask the foreign ministry to put in a request to the British government for the PML-N supremo's extradition.

Referring to a ruling by the Islamabad High Court earlier this week, he said that the court had declared his presence necessary if an extension in bail is sought.

Nawaz was granted bail on humanitarian grounds by the IHC on October 29, 2019 in the Al Azizia corruption case. He also obtained bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case from the Lahore High Court on October 25, 2019.

Nawaz then left for London for medical treatment and has since remained there.

Shehbaz Sharif could be disqualified if Nawaz does not return, says Chohan

(Karachi) Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan has said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif could face disqualification if Nawaz Sharif did not return back to Pakistan.

Addressing a press briefing in Lahore on Wednesday, he said that Shehbaz Sharif spoke lies about Nawaz’s return. “Everyone knows that Shehbaz Sharif guaranteed Nawaz’s return from abroad once his treatment is over,” he said.

Chohan highlighted that the PML-N president had guaranteed Nawaz Sharif’s return after eight weeks as ordered by Lahore High Court (LHC).

“Shehbaz Sharif lied to the nation as he had submitted a draft of the undertaking to the Lahore High Court about Nawaz Sharif’s return after eight weeks,” he added.

Earlier, Advisor to Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar said PM Imran Khan won’t even give NRO to the Opposition and would bring back Nawaz, his children and Ishaq Dar.

The former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had left the country for his treatment on certain conditions but none of these had been fulfilled, Akbar said.

He stated Nawaz Sharif was permitted to get medical treatment from abroad subject to his return to the country within the stipulated time frame. He said the former premier was bound to submit his periodical medical reports and updates to the court as well as to the Punjab government but he failed to do so.

and yet the likes of the Sharifs and Zardaro’s and their supporters call IK the selected one...

That's why its funny. Being lectured on democracy by supporters of:

PMLN- who's entire party is named after their leader and where only him or his family hold positions
PPP- who's leadership was passed down via a will

These supporters then lecture others on democracy.

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said that although Prime Minister Imran Khan is "yearning" to see him "go to jail", it is what he considers "a small price to pay" in the service of the nation.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, he vowed that he and party supremo Nawaz Sharif "stand by Pakistan" and will "play their role to get the country back on track".

"We have struggled in the past and will continue to do so. Even if we have to go to jail we will, it is not a big price to pay," he said.

Shehbaz warned that in the event he goes to jail, "as is Imran Khan's yearning", his fellow party members will bring forth "the entire project". "If I remain free, I will bring it to light," he added.

"We never kicked up a fuss over it before but we will address this now and are preparing a plan of action," he said, referring to the government's accusations against various members of the party, pertaining to corruption and misuse of power, besides a litany of other charges.

The PML-N leader made no other mention of the nature of the revelations he plans to "bring forth".

"Two years have passed and Pakistan's people are disappointed and have had it with this selected government," Shehbaz said, adding: "The writing is on the wall over what good they have actually done us."

"We were promised billions of dollars worth of development and rivers of milk and honey," the PML-N leader said. He said is compelled today "to must speak on behalf of this country's poor".

He said it was a matter of great regret that the price of sugar which was at Rs50 in Nawaz's tenure is at Rs100 now.

"Wheat and wheat flour was a commodity that was easily found everywhere and in abundance and now it is nowhere to be found," he said.

"Our pockets are empty [...] we cannot get our hands on diesel," Shehbaz went on to say.

Referring to the Baldia factory fire tragedy, he said that if the current trends continue, a similar fate awaited Pakistan's economy.

The opposition leader said that the government representatives "are only busy in hiding their scandals [...] their foreign funding account is an open and shut case".

"If the ECP (Election Commission of Pakistan) brings the facts forth, the prime minister will not be prime minister for even one second," he claimed.

Shehbaz said that despite the passage of "years", a verdict in the matter had not been announced.

"I want to say that they have levelled baseless accusations on PML-N and sought to get their revenge but they have still not had their fill. The NAB-Niazi nexus have broken all records of filing cases against us," said the PML-N leader.

He said "the whole nation knows the truth" behind the narcotics probe against PML-N's Rana Sanaullah.

"On the other hand, no one is ready to talk about Aleema baji's assets abroad. She comes with protocol to the FBR (Federal Board of Revenue) office".

Shehbaz said that no one is without fault and he admits that, but stressed that the PML-N had "worked day and night" for Pakistan and "every kid even is witness to this".

He asked why there was no probe into the Malam Jabba case and what happened to the "helicopter" inquiry.

The mill needs to be confiscated unless he comes back to face the charges. This family has looted and destroyed everything they have laid their hands on.

Shehbaz Sharif says does not seek confrontation, believes in reconciliation

Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that he does not seek confrontation with anyone and believes in reconciliation.

In a conversation with senior journalists, the PML-N president said: "Confrontation will not benefit anyone. It is my belief that the country can only move forward with consultation and reconciliation."

He said that he has been "in touch with the army as an institution for 25 years now".

Shehbaz, went on to say that despite his viewpoint, he "never sought any benefit from reconciliation".

According to Geo News talk show host Shahzad Iqbal, trusted sources said that PML-N stalwart Khawaja Saad Rafique was also present in the meeting and said that if resistance as a strategy was adopted by the opposition, then the only one to benefit would be Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government.

He claimed that the government seeks to have the opposition "fight with state institutions".

When Shehbaz was asked how the government could have a such an aim when it was Nawaz himself who spoke out against the institutions, the PML-N president rejected the notion and said that the party supremo had only spoken in favour of the Constitution and the law. “Nawaz Sharif provided recommendations for the future of Pakistan. They must be taken into consideration.”

Referring to reports that Nawaz Sharif had prohibited party members from meeting military leadership and if it is absolutely necessary then only with express approval from him, Shehbaz clarified that Nawaz had simply said there is no harm in informing him if such a meeting is planned.

He reiterated that his politics is one of reconciliation, adding however that the decisions made during the multi-party conference still stand.

The PML-N leader said that both his party and the PPP are ready to resign from the assemblies should the time come for such a move to be necessary.

Shehbaz also spoke of the opposition's demand for re-elections, saying that all parties agree that there should be fresh, transparent polls.

He also said that no new elections must take place until the demand for "no interference" in the exercise is fulfilled.

Responding to a question on why the party thinks the prime minister seeks Shehbaz’s arrest, Rafique said that the premier “fears Shehbaz Sharif’s performance”.

The prime minister has rejected the opposition's demand for re-elections and instead said that he is ready to hold by-elections for seats that have fallen vacant. The premier said the opposition would fail to secure even one seat when this takes place.

'What bitterness?'
PML-N's Rana Sanaullah was invited to speak on Shahzad Iqbal's show and when asked whether Shehbaz Sharif's statements today aimed at removing any bitterness that may have arisen between the opposition and the state institutions, Sanaullah remarked: "What bitterness?"

The PML-N leader said that the party supremo's address to the multi-party conference "made no mention of anything that everyone does not already agree on".

He said that Nawaz only spoke of the reasons "why Pakistan could not reach the heights it should have in the last 70 years".

'Welcome any change in hawkish policy'
Science minister Fawad Chaudhry, also invited to participate in the show, said that if there is a change within the party's stance and if they are letting go of their former "hawkish" policies, then he welcomes any such change.

He went on to say that the party, as an entity, "must distance itself from the Sharifs".

Chaudhry said that "owing to their sentiments being hurt" by Nawaz's speech, the party must "seriously consider" emerging as "a new party".

"PML-N is no doubt a loyal party that loves the country and will surely take that route now."

On the show host's inquiry of claims long been made by PTI members that the PML-N will soon "branch off", Chaudhry said that the government does not seek for opposition members to defect, and had instead called for an open vote in the upcoming Senate elections.

Suleman Shehbaz summoned in money laundering case on Oct 1

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday issued summons to Suleman Shehbaz in the money laundering case for October 1.

This is the second time the anti-graft watchdog has summoned the PML-N president’s son in the case. He was first summoned on September 25 but failed to appear in court.

The FIA sent a notice to Suleman questioning the source of the Rs10.5 billion that was transferred into his account.

The agency warned the PML-N president’s son that if he did not appear in court, legal action would be taken.

However, the security official at Shehbaz Sharif’s residence refused to accept the notice, citing that Salman Shehbaz is not present in Pakistan.

Gravel seller adds to list of ‘fake accounts’ of Shehbaz family

Another astonishing disclosure was made in the money laundering inquiry against the Shehbaz Sharif family as thousands of dollars were found to be transferred through the accounts of a poor person who sold gravel and bricks, NAB documents revealed on Monday.

The accused, when approached, expressed ignorance about the matter.

On December 6, 2010, $45,450 were transferred to Suleman Shahbaz through Al Zarooni Exchange, Dubai, using the accounts of Pervez Phulphutto – a resident of interior Sindh who sells gravel and stones to earn a living, the NAB statement said.

Giving details about himself to the anti-corruption watchdog, Phulphutto said that he had been to Saudi Arabia only once for performing Umrah, while he has never visited any other foreign country.

He said his monthly income was between Rs25,000-30,000 and that he had never seen an amount of $45,000 in his life.

Phulphutto said he was a stone seller and hardly made his ends meet.

Refuting the claim of having any personal or business contact with the Shehbaz family, he said Suleman Shahbaz had fraudulently used his name and transferred the funds.

He demanded of the anti-graft buster to proceed against the Shehbaz family.

Earlier, the NAB had revealed that the accounts of cracker sellers, hawkers and labourers were used by the Shehbaz family to transfer hefty amounts.

How are these paaye, rasgullah eating faties able to transfer $100,000 to $500 million from one account to the other with impunity with no checks and scrutiny? Do they have everyone in the FBR, SECP, FIA, NAB in their pockets even today?

Pakistan is corrupt to the very bottom. These crooks have had 30 years to do their work. There is a mini industry of corruption going on. Of course they have people in these organisations. Imran Khan would need decades to clean up the mess they have left. The only way to clean it up is to be ruthless but that would involve bloodshed and we cant afford that at the moment and Khan sahib is a pacifist. They should beware the day we get a democratic genghis khan!! Because it is going to happen..then theyll wish they had Imran back..

NAB seizes assets of Shehbaz’s family members, others in money laundering case

LAHORE:The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday seized assets of six accused, including family members of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif, in a money laundering case.

An accountability court in Lahore resumed the hearing of the case today. The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and his son Hamza Shehbaz were produced before the court by jail authorities.

During the hearing, the Lahore director-general NAB submitted a report before the court through the investigating officer.

According to the report, NAB seized the assets of Shehbaz’s wife Nusrat Shehbaz, son Suleiman Shehbaz, daughter Rabia Imran and son-in-law Haroon Yousaf.

Shehbaz prayed upon the court that he was suffering from a backache and his medical check-up for cancer and his stomach was also due.

“I was given my [previous] medical reports after one month,” Shehbaz complained. “The decision of life and death is taken by God, but this is just political revenge being taken on the behest of someone else.”

After hearing Shehbaz’s arguments, the judge remarked that Shehbaz should provide details of his complaints in writing to the court. “I will conduct a separate hearing on them,” the judge said.

Lawyers for Shahbaz and Hamza completed the cross-examination of a NAB witness, after which the court summoned two more witnesses, Ibrahim Malik and Muhammad Sharif, to record their statements and adjourned the hearing till January 4.

On December 9, an accountability court had declared the PML-N president's wife an absconder in the money laundering and assets beyond means case.

During the case proceedings, the prosecutor stated that one month had passed since the summons were issued but Nusrat failed to appear before the court.

Shehbaz’s son, daughter, and son-in-law among others have already been declared absconders in the case.

In November, one of the approvers against Shehbaz in a money laundering and assets beyond means case claimed that he carried out 24 money laundering transactions for the Shehbaz family between 2008 and 2009.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1668879/shehbaz-assails-govts-economic-performance-in-na-says-country-being-pawned-away-for-mere-1bn

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif and Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar traded barbs on Tuesday, with the former claiming that the country's economy was being pawned away for $1 billion and the latter slamming the PML-N for leaving the economy in dire straits.

The exchange took place on the floor of the NA as the House began a debate on the controversial Finance (Supplementary) Bill, generally known as the mini-budget.

The bill is one of the requirements Pakistan has to meet under the programme agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in July 2019. If passed, the legislation will pave the way for the disbursement of a $1bn tranche.

As the matter was taken up for debate in the NA, Shehbaz questioned how it was possible for the country to be an atomic power on one hand and be holding a begging bowl in the other.

"The finance minister had said that Imran Khan would stand up to the IMF [...] he had said that a mini-budget would not be introduced and that there would be a tax-free budget. But seven months later, what has happened?"

He said that the PTI government only excelled in making U-turns. He said that taxes worth Rs350 billion were being imposed on the people who were already facing inflation and unemployment.

Assailing the government, the PML-N president said that the ruling PTI had drowned the country's economy and was also endangering its security.

He called on the government to withdraw the controversial finance bill. "We have our political differences ... but bring another bill and we will support that."

Shehbaz warned that the opposition would protest in the house and "on the roads" if the government tried to bulldoze such a bill. "They are selling out Pakistan's economy and freedom for $1bn."

He said that a nation that was habitual of begging could never progress. "Handouts, aid and dole outs will never be able to strengthen a society and make it stand on its own two feet ... for that you have to work hard."

He said that the PTI used to claim that it couldn't see any poverty in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, their recent defeat in the local government elections must have opened their eyes, he said.

Shehbaz said that the country's citizens don't have money to pay their children's school fees, but the ruling party was oblivious to the issues being faced by the middle-class.

"The day is not far where a horde of people, frustrated due to poverty, unemployment and inflation, will descend and sweep away the country's most inefficient and corrupt government."

He accused the government of ignoring the opposition's input due to "ego". "They consider themselves Einstein."

Giving the example of bills related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Shehbaz said the opposition had set aside differences and supported the government on multiple occasions in the wider interest of the country.

"But in return slogans of 'robbers and dacoits' were raised [against us]," he said, adding that this "polluted the society".

Responding to Shehbaz's criticism, Federal Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar said the leader of the opposition began his tirade by saying that the nation was being enslaved to the IMF.

"Probably the news hasn't reached him yet that his government sealed deals with the IMF four times," he said.

The minister went on to say that Shehbaz should also recall the situation at the end of the PML-N's tenure.

"I was standing in this same hall. Those were the early days of 2018," he said, adding that PML-N's Miftah Ismail was the finance minister at the time.

"In this hall, I had said that the economy was drowning, that the Titanic was about to hit an iceberg. And Miftah Ismail had agreed," Umar said.

"These were the streams of milk and honey that they left behind," he said.

Moreover, the minister said, the opposition had advised that work be initiated on a charter of economy and "it be signed by all".

But when PML-N Supremo Nawaz Sharif was the prime minister, the government never signed a charter of economy with the opposition, he said.

"Still, we may sit and talk with them (the opposition)," he continued. "But what will we learn from them? How to launder money through TTs (telegraphic transfers)? How to recover billions of rupees from the accounts of employees whose salaries are Rs15,000 to Rs20,000 per month? Or how Pakistan's prime minister invites disrepute from across the world after Panama Papers [leaks]?"

Umar further said the opposition leader had criticised the government over "choice of words".

"(Shehbaz) said that PM Imran calling political leaders robbers had destroyed politics in Pakistan," he said, recalling that PML-N leaders, including Nawaz, had used inappropriate words for former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in the past.

He also mentioned a leaked audio clip of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and PML-N leader Pervaiz Rasheed wherein inappropriate language was used for journalists.

Umar added that Shehbaz had claimed that his party was ready to support the government on bills pertaining to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

"Just to remind him and the nation, the FATF had placed Pakistan on the grey list during the PML-N's tenure," he said. "And, I challenge them on this floor ... they had opposed the bills."

He concluded his speech by comparing economic data from the PML-N's tenure with that of the PTI government, saying that the country's economic growth year this year would surpass the estimated target.
