ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi promised on Wednesday that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif will soon introduce a national action plan to counter the coronavirus epidemic.
The senior PML-N leader made the statement while addressing a press conference along with other party members, where he said that it is the need of the hour to display national unity but the government’s behavior is not on the right track in response to the outbreak.
Abbasi said that the PML-N's action plan will comprise various aspects, but a nationwide lockdown remains the bedrock of its strategy for the prevention of virus spread.
There should also be awareness regarding prevention methods against the coronavirus, he said.
He said that the government had not paid much heed to the locking down of the country to thwart the threat, and termed it the biggest failure of the incumbent leadership.
“Practically, the entire Pakistan is under lockdown; some places more than the others… the prime minister just seems to be unaware of it,” he said.
Abbasi stressed on a unified policy across the country to battle the pandemic, saying economic activity should also continue.
He said that the action plan will also comprise medical preparation as the coronavirus is spreading more than 2.5% on a daily basis.
Funds ought to be used transparently: Shehbaz Sharif
Taking over, Shehbaz Sharif said that the funds gathered to combat the epidemic should be used in a transparent manner.
Shehbaz called for parliamentary supervision of the distribution and use of funds, noting that Pakistan is fighting the virus with limited resources.
He said that the sessions of the standing committees of the Senate and National Assembly should be summoned and the government officials should give regular briefing on the situation.
As he took over, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal quoted a foreign publication as saying that 43% of all Pakistanis were not using any preventive measures against the coronavirus.
“We could not spread awareness among half of the population,” he regretted.
While criticizing the prime minister’s mantra, Iqbal said: “The nation should not be told to not panic: it should be told to panic”.
‘High-risk areas should be identified’
Mussadiq Malik said high-risk areas should be identified so preventive measures can be targeted at those areas.
“If there is no screening in poor countries such as Pakistan, then the total number of patients will never be known,” he said.
He cautioned that the next four weeks will be quite difficult, and that 100,000 people could likely get infect within a month’s time. Malik warned that if there is no national lockdown, the number could go up to the millions.
He said that there is an urgent need for field hospitals and mobile-screening vans.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif in a money laundering case tomorrow.
According to Geo News, NAB has sought details of properties inherited by the PML-N leader.
The accountability bureau has said that between 1998 to 2018, Shehbaz’s family assets grew from Rs23 million to Rs549 billion. “As a public office holder Shehbaz needs to explain the increase in his assets,” NAB said.
The accountability watchdog has also asked Shehbaz to submit bank details along with the loan taken from Barclays between 2005 to 2007.

Furthermore, NAB has also sought details of all the gifts received and given by the family, details of agriculture income from 2008 to 2019 and details about the utilization of Shehbaz’s Model Town residence as chief minister’s camp house.
Last year in December, NAB had issued orders to freeze 23 pieces of property belonging to the former Punjab chief minister and his sons Hamza and Suleman Shehbaz over the allegation that they acquired assets beyond their means and committed money laundering.
According to the accountability bureau, an investigation against Shehbaz, Hamza, Suleman and others for the offence of "corruption and corrupt practices" had revealed that Shehbaz had acquired properties in the name of his wives Nusrat Shahbaz Sharif and Tehmina Durrani.
Among the properties frozen are nine plots in Lahore's Johar Town, four in Judicial Colony, two houses in Model Town and as many houses in DHA.
Furthermore, the bureau has also frozen a cottage and a villa in Pir Sohawa and two more plots in Chiniot.

The National Accountability Bureau has warned Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz president Shehbaz Sharif that it will take legal action against him if he fails to appear before the bureau on April 22 in a money laundering cases, reported The News on Tuesday.
The accountability bureau has directed the PML-N leader to appear on April 22 after he skipped out on his April 17 appearance.
On Monday, the Bureau issued a press release, warning the former Punjab chief minister that in case of non-cooperation, legal action will be taken against him. NAB claims that the said the probe is in its final phase and Shehbaz’s appearance before accountability watchdog's investigators is crucial in concluding the investigation.
NAB has reassured Shehbaz that all social distancing measures will be adopted and investigators will only ask questions related to alleged money laundering from a safe distance.
Earlier, the PML-N leader had skipped an appearance before the NAB in the money laundering investigations fearing that he would contract coronavirus as he was a 69-year old cancer survivor and medical professionals had advised him to restrict his movement due to life-threatening risks associated with the disease.

Earlier, the PML-N leader had skipped an appearance before the NAB in the money laundering investigations fearing that he would contract coronavirus as he was a 69-year old cancer survivor and medical professionals had advised him to restrict his movement due to life-threatening risks associated with the disease.
The anti-graft body in his summons had asked Shehbaz to provide details of properties inherited by the PML-N leader. NAB said that from 1998 to 2018, Shehbaz’s family assets grew from scratches to billions.
“As a public office holder, Shehbaz needs to explain the increase in his assets”, NAB said.
It also asked Shehbaz to submit bank details along with the loan taken from Barclays Bank from 2005 to 2007. Furthermore, NAB has also sought details of all the gifts received and given by the family, details of agriculture income from 2008 to 2019 and details about the utilisation of Shehbaz’s Model Town residence as Chief Minister’s camp house.
Last year in December, NAB had issued orders to freeze 23 properties belonging to the former chief minister and his sons Hamza and Salman over the allegation that they acquired assets beyond their means and committed money-laundering.
According to the accountability bureau, an investigation against Shehbaz, Hamza, Salman and others for the offence of “corruption and corrupt practices” had revealed that Shehbaz had acquired properties in the name of his wives Nusrat Shehbaz and Tehmina Durrani.
Among the properties frozen were nine plots in Lahore’s Johar Town, four in Judicial Colony, two houses in Model Town and as many houses in DHA. Furthermore, the Bureau has also frozen a cottage and a villa in Pir Sohawa and two more plots in Chiniot.
NAB concluded that Shehbaz and his sons Hamza and Salman acquired assets beyond their known sources of income and allegedly committed money laundering.

The NAB also refused to entertain the request of the opposition leader in the National Assembly to quiz him through video link.
Shahbaz skipped the NAB hearing for the second consecutive time on Wednesday despite the anti-graft watchdog’s warning that he might face “serious consequences” for not cooperating with it.
In his reply to the bureau’s questionnaire, Shahbaz said he could not appear before its combined investigation team (CIT) because of precautions from coronavirus. He said since he was a cancer survivor with low immunity and was following his doctors’ advice to restrict movement owing to the pandemic, he was ready to respond to any more questions (of NAB) through video link.
Meanwhile, the PML-N said Shahbaz Sharif had submitted a “24-page” reply along with the required documents to the NAB after securing the record from here and the UK, but the bureau seemed more interested in making him appear before it.

“We wonder how the NAB without going through Shahbaz’s reply issued him another call up notice for May 4. It shows clear collusion of NAB and Prime Minister Imran Khan Niazi,” PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said.
“NAB cannot express its dissatisfaction on his reply without reading it. NAB’s premeditated response to Shahbaz’s answers is a proof of NAB-Niazi fixed match and travesty of justice,” she declared.
Rejecting the NAB’s accusation that Shahbaz was not cooperating with it, the former information minister said: “Mr Sharif remained in custody for 133 days and submitted every relevant document and detail so how does the question of non-cooperation arise? Those who are non-cooperative do not remain in NAB prison without any charges for 61 days,” she said, adding the NAB’s focus seemed to be on making the PML-N president appear before it instead of his interrogation and answers to the bureau’s questions.
On the other hand, the NAB has again warned Shahbaz to cooperate with it and appear before the CIT as law was equal for everyone.“Shahbaz Sharif is asked to appear before the NAB and provide all required information to it in person,” it stated.

The PML-N leader, in an interview with Daily Jang, claimed that a month before July election, names of potential cabinet members were being finalised in his meetings with ‘powerful circles’.
Shehbaz Sharif said that his relations with the Chaudhries of PML-Q are almost neutral. He said that there are no feelings of enmity between them anymore but there’s no talk of any joint political strategy with them as yet.
The journalist posed several questions such as whether the former CM Punjab returned to the country as a result of a deal, and what was the purpose of his return.
Shehbaz Sharif was also asked if he came back to formulate a strategy for future political discourse, or if there was any secret negotiation underway with the Chaudhry brothers.
“How close is Shehbaz Sahrif to the powerful circles, and how far away? Who is the political heir of Nawaz Sharif?”
The questions also revolved around the political future of Maryam and Hamza Nawaz and whether the Sharif family has taken a formal decision in this regard.
The PML-N president responded to every question but declined to comment on one thing which he termed off the record.

So we kept hearing Shahbaz Sharif is coming to Pakistan to help Pakistan fighting the COVID-19 disease.
The person didn't even do anything yet and made an excuse not to appear before NAB as he claims he is "vulnerable". Fair enough, but then why say he is coming personally to fight against CORONAVIRUS and people should expect him in streets and hospital.

They said that Shehbaz will have to appear himself as required under the law, and urged him to cooperate with the national institution.
This is the third time Shehbaz has been summoned to appear before the anti-graft body. He was earlier summoned by NAB to appear on April 22. However, Marriyum Aurangzeb, the PML-N spokesperson had said Shehbaz did not appear due to the coronavirus threat in the country.
The PML-N spokesperson had said the former Punjab chief minister is a cancer survivor and his life was in danger due to the pandemic which was why he could not appear before the Bureau.

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Shibli Faraz has responded to PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb's media talk from a day earlier in which she had spoken out against NAB's summoning of party president Shehbaz Sharif.
She portrayed it to be a case "as if a very virtuous, innocent and honest man has been humiliated," said Faraz of Aurangzeb's briefing.
He said that if Shehbaz Sharif has been summoned by NAB, then it is because NAB is an institution in pursuit of the implementation of law in the land. "If you consider appearing before the law an act which tarnishes your reputation then that means you have no regard for the law.
"We know that they have no respect for the law because if they did, they would not have done the things they did while in power," he said. "They gave the impression that they were above the law."
Slamming the PML-N leadership, he said they have a "monarch mindset" and that only in a "monarchy do the kings not appear before the law". He regretted how democracy "was just for a show" during the PML-N's tenure.
"It's very unfortunate that they [PML-N] are challenging the law and not appearing before it respectfully," he said.
"Everyone knows how you looted the nation's money and how you transferred all of your assets abroad," he said, adding: "This is the reason why the health system has collapsed."
Faraz said that Nawaz Sharif along with his family was residing in London, while the nation was facing hard times.
Furthermore, he said that Shehbaz, who came back to Pakistan to stand with the people, was monitoring them through a monitor screen that he could have done while remaining in London.
"People have decided that they do not want to live in the old Pakistan, where a family ruled the country only to benefit themselves," he said.
Informing about the decision made in the cabinet he said that the approval for exporting local hand sanitiser was given.
Meanwhile, he said that Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar had informed the cabinet that a meeting comprising of all the chief minister would take place tomorrow [Wednesday] to decide on how to ease the lockdown after May 9.
Talking about the post lockdown strategy he said: "The prime minister's focus from day one was on the people who are [financially] vulnerable — the daily wagers."
"Whenever the lockdown eases, people should follow the SOPs and safety measures because we cannot afford a relapse of the pandemic," he said.
"China was able to stem the spread of the virus because the political system of the country is different, we cannot apply the same strategy here," Faraz said.
"Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation Dr Sania Nishtar Sania Nishtar had informed the cabinet that nearly eight million families were being provided financial aid" under the Ehsaas Programme, Faraz added.

According to NAB spokesperson, Shehbaz along with other political leaders is allegedly involved in illegally allotting the land of the Punjab Development Authority to people he favoured.
In this regard, NAB Multan has sent a questionnaire to Shehbaz and has directed to submit the reply by May 18.
Earlier this week, the national watchdog had summoned the PML-N president again on June 2 in an investigation pertaining to alleged money laundering.
The former Punjab chief minister appeared before the accountability watchdog to respond to questions related to the investigation.

Him and his family are biggest political disease of Pakistan. I have no sympathy for people who are corrupt, incompetent and dishonest.
If you just started following Pakistani politics now, you are absolutely right.
If you understand their politics, you will see nothing but dramas and will find hard to sympathise.
When Shahbaz announced his return to country, his party ran strong campaign with many top journalists that he is the only hope of our fight against Corona. China helped us only because Shahbaz called them. Fact is PM had already had several briefings in which medical equipment procurement updates had been provided & several interactions with China had happened before he even arrived.
Coming to his health, he came to fight Corona but can't even leave his house due to health conditions, how does this work really? Then came NA session which PTI govt suggested to be held virtual session but opposition lead by Shahbaz Sharif was adamant that we MUST hold physical session. Guess what? Shahbaz was missing and as per Khawaja Asif, he had plan to come till late night but decided not to attend the session due to health issues......now....he knew he had cancer and had already refused to attend NAB hearing then why did he plan to come to NA session?? Did he forget he had cancer?
And previously he had staged a drama of donating blood, probably a bad idea given he had cancer?

According to a statement posted by the PML-N's official Twitter account, the former Punjab chief minister called on the government to "not waste more time" in creating an effective national strategy to cope with the coronavirus.
"The nation should be informed about the testing data and what strategy is in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus," he said.
The statement from Shehbaz came at a time when the number of coronavirus cases in the province crossed 57,000 and more than 1,100 people died in Pakistan.
The PML-N has, on frequent occasions, blamed the government for the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country and said that the Centre does not have a strategy in place to deal with the pandemic.

The NAB team and police officers instead headed to Shehbaz's brother and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's home in Jati Umra in search of the PML-N president. They had earlier today reached the former Punjab chief minister's residence in an attempt to arrest him, Geo News had reported.
Several party workers had also reached Shehbaz's residence to protest against the NAB; meanwhile, barricades were set up in the area and media personnel was not being allowed to go near his residence.
According to Geo News bureau chief for Lahore, a four-member team — including three women officers and led by NAB Deputy Director Chaudhry Muhammad Asghar — was at the site.
It was unclear what the aim of the NAB team's visit to Shehbaz's residence was.

"The whole nation is concerned over the coronavirus pandemic and locusts' attack but the rulers are engaged in vindictive actions," he said.
A high court has already scheduled a hearing for the case at 11am tomorrow, he added, noting that Shehbaz would appear for that hearing.
The PML-N president had not returned from London to appear in the NAB case, he noted, but had come to Pakistan on his brother Nawaz's advice to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.
"I do not know where Shehbaz Sharif is," Sanaullah stated, adding that it was strange why the NAB was in such a hurry.
'Political revenge'
Malik Ahmed Khan, another PML-N leader, said the anti-corruption body was showing "complete political revenge" and the government was doing so to fulfill its political goals.
"Shehbaz Sharif has always honoured the law and answered the NAB's questions. The NAB's actions lay bare the government's intentions," Khan said, adding that the anti-graft watchdog had been informed that Shehbaz and his team wished to respond to everything.
The PML-N leader further claimed the incumbent PTI-led government was engaging in such actions to hide its weaknesses in the upcoming budget.

The PML-N's Marriyum Aurangzeb later reached Model Town and addressed the media, saying "this was a circus and drama of NAB-Niazi nexus".
Aurangzeb said Shehbaz had to go to the NAB's office earlier today and that he had yesterday submitted a petition in the Lahore High Court claiming the operations of NAB were "ill-intentioned and based on political revenge".
"The entire nation is aware of the nefarious agendas of NAB-Niazi nexus. A divisional bench of the LHC has scheduled a hearing for the petition for tomorrow," she said, adding that the PML-N president wrote to the anti-graft body about how its officers had tested positive for coronavirus and since he's a cancer survivor, he would not make an appearance.
"The case on Sehhbaz — from Ganda Naala, Saaf Pani, Ashiana scheme, 56 Companies, Earthquake funds embezzlement — are false allegations. The entire drama since the past two-and-a-half years is in front of the Pakistani people.

"Despite all such allegations, Shehbaz continued to appear in front of the law and the NAB," she said, alleging further that the authorities outside the PML-N president's residence were beating party workers, including women.
She claimed that "rented spokespeople are staging dramas" and that "all this circus being carried out at [Prime Minister] Imran Khan sahab's orders is unconstitutional and illegal... It's a contempt of the court".

A Lahore High Court division bench granted pre-arrest bail till June 17 to Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, a day after a team of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) raided his Model Town residence to arrest him in cases related to money laundering and assets beyond known sources of income.
During the hearing, Sharif's lawyers claimed that even though he was summoned by NAB on June 2, warrants were dated May 28, implying that the watchdog had already decided to arrest him. To this, NAB's counsel responded by saying that warrants were issued when there was enough evidence to make an arrest.
Granting Sharif bail till June 17, the court also asked him to submit a surety bond worth Rs500,000.
Sharif's legal team had filed the pre-arrest bail petition on June 1, a day before he was required to appear before a combined investigation team of the NAB. However, the bail petition could not be fixed for hearing before the bench yesterday.
Also yesterday, for a third time, Shehbaz had refused to appear before NAB, citing health concerns. In a statement submitted to the bureau, he said:
"It has been widely reported in the media that some NAB officials have tested positive for Covid-19.
"Please appreciate [that] I am a cancer survivor and and 69 years old. I have been advised limited exposure on account of the peculiar background of low immunity," he said.
He added that he was available to answer any queries by the investigation team via Skype.
After he did not appear for the NAB hearing, a team of officials from the watchdog and police raided the PML-N president's residence in Lahore's Model Town to arrest him but left on learning that he was not present there.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Vice Chairman Abid Saqi and Lahore High Court Bar Association Secretary Haroon Dogal submitted a petition requesting the Lahore High Court to grant Sharif permission to reach the court.
The petition said police had "set up obstacles" on the way to the court to prevent [Shehbaz from reaching it].
Shehbaz Sharif submitted a petition for pre-arrest bail in the LHC two days ago and reaching the court [for it] is his legal right, the petitioners argued.
A similar petition was also filed by Azam Nazeer Tarar, a member of the PBC.
PML-N leaders including Rana Sanaullah, Marriyum Aurangzeb and former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reached the court premises ahead of the hearing. Party spokeswoman Marriyum Aurangzeb, speaking to reporters outside the LHC, said that an "anti-people and thieving government" had been imposed upon the people.
"The person who shut the country from atop a container has frozen the entire country," she added.
Rana Sanaullah said that Shehbaz was a "patriotic citizen and wants to get bail which is his legal right".
He said the deployment of heavy contingent of police outside the high court premises was a "complete violation of the law".

During the hearing, Sharif's lawyers claimed that even though he was summoned by NAB on June 2, warrants were dated May 28, implying that the watchdog had already decided to arrest him. To this, NAB's counsel responded by saying that warrants were issued when there was enough evidence to make an arrest.
Granting Sharif bail till June 17, the court also asked him to submit a surety bond worth Rs500,000.
Sharif's legal team had filed the pre-arrest bail petition on June 1, a day before he was required to appear before a combined investigation team of the NAB. However, the bail petition could not be fixed for hearing before the bench yesterday.
Also yesterday, for a third time, Shehbaz had refused to appear before NAB, citing health concerns. In a statement submitted to the bureau, he said:
"It has been widely reported in the media that some NAB officials have tested positive for Covid-19.
"Please appreciate [that] I am a cancer survivor and and 69 years old. I have been advised limited exposure on account of the peculiar background of low immunity," he said.
He added that he was available to answer any queries by the investigation team via Skype.
After he did not appear for the NAB hearing, a team of officials from the watchdog and police raided the PML-N president's residence in Lahore's Model Town to arrest him but left on learning that he was not present there.

PML-N president and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed on Thursday.
Sharif has isolated himself at home, she added.
Party leader Ataullah Tarar also confirmed the development and said Sharif's "life had been endangered in this situation by NAB's summoning of him".
"NAB was informed multiple times in writing that Shehbaz Sharif has suffered from cancer and compared to other people, his immunity system is weak," Tarar said and added that Sharif had only left home to appear before NAB.
"Imran Niazi and NAB will be responsible if something happens to Shehbaz Sharif," he said.
When asked about the news, Hamza Shehbaz, Sharif's son and PML-N leader, said: "This is a difficult time for Pakistan. May Allah grant health to everyone's parents."
The PML-N president had appeared before the National Accountability Bureau on Tuesday in connection with investigations pertaining to money laundering and income-beyond-means.
Earlier this month, he had also appeared before the Lahore High Court to obtain a pre-arrest bail in cases regarding money laundering and assets beyond means. Reminds me of that Geo journalist that was taken to task on social media yesterday. Fake from a crooked family. This is another pathetic attempt to get out of the TTS. He has admitted that the family has taken bribes and his response was to say, ask them, it has nothing to do with him. But evidence has emerged to say that bribes also went into his accounts. Is there a more immoral family than this.
