Former West Indies U19 captain. This guy is a special prospect.

He's got a complete game.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) — West Indies’ latest batting recruit, Shimron Hetmyer, has hailed his outing in the three-day tour game against Pakistan as a learning experience and an important boost to his career.

The 20-year-old struck 97 in the contest at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium last weekend, a knock that helped him force his way into the 13-man squad for the opening Test bowling off here tomorrow.

“I’ve learnt that going through my innings, I should take it a ball at a time and a session at a time as well,” the Guyana Jaguars left-hander said.

“[I need to also] just keep my eyes on the ball as much as possible and try and communicate as much as possible with my partner to see what’s going on. Just waiting and being more selective [is also important].”

Hetmyer has been on the selectors’ radar ever since he captained West Indies Under-19s to their triumph at last year’s Youth World Cup in Bangladesh.

He further impressed in the regional four-day championship by gathering nearly 500 runs and was rewarded with a call-up to the WICB President’s XI side to face the Pakistanis.
Hetmyer said such tour games against international opposition were crucial for young players in the region.

“I think it is very important. [It tells us] where we are in our cricket and where we should improve and where we can improve,” he pointed out.

“If this should continue and we get more youngsters in the system, they would understand where they are and know how to build later.”

A naturally aggressive player at the top of the order, Hetmyer struck 11 fours and two sixes in a breezy 115-ball innings against a Pakistan attack that included the likes of leg-spinner Yasir Shah and pacer Mohammad Amir.

He said the knock had been important since he failed to get a significant score in his previous first-class outing.

“I just played to my strengths, that was mainly it. I just chose the balls that I could put away and I think I did that well,” he explained.

“The ball that I got out with, I don’t think I could’ve really done that much but then again, that’s how cricket goes sometimes.”

He added: “It (innings) boosted me a lot because coming off the last first-class game I played in Barbados, I didn’t really get much,so I was hoping to get some in this game and I think that came off.”

He looked very solid in his stay. No nerves and looked in total control until he got that superb delivery from Amir.

WI should invest in him.

If he's an attacking player, then should set him up to open with Brathwaite.

Watch out for this kid you say :yk more like he better watch out for his off stump :yk2

This guy's real solid man. One of the best young prospects I've seen in a while.

I hope so, always nice to see a good WI's prospect come through; but that's where it all ends, he ought to end up in a fight with his board before resorting to foreign leagues to make a living which is a damn shame. These guys do not develop their players and are abject failures at managing their careers.

I tried to watch out, but by that time he was back in the pavilion :yk

Jokes aside he looked like a class apart in the u19 WC. Windies are doing it the wrong side up. He should have been blooded in the T20s or ODIs.

Impressed with how he's willing to take on the bowlers debut or not. Needs to be given time in the team.

When Darren Bravo comes back, I'd have Vishaul Singh make way and have a middle order of Bravo, Hope and Hetmyer.

Looks like he might get a chance in the next game after a hundred in the warm-up today against Leicestershire... Why was he batting at #9 though?

Sohail Tanvir's contagious "protect the youngsters and bat them behind you" theory must've contaminated WI minds in CPL.

Good call by OP again. Certainly has talent. West Indies should stick with him.

The next Lara announces himself.

Has some kinks in his technique, certainly not the next lara i believe. Has a bit of temperament issues too as far as Tests are concerned. But i do believe, under Stuart Law, he can certainly develop into a very good LOI batter. They need to get rid of Hope from ODI's though. Kills all the momentum. Can be a perfect no.4

He is brilliant actually. Watched him for the first time and what an inning he has played. Phenomenal really.

WI have striked GOLD here.

What an innings that was yesterday- one of the best ODI centuries I have seen in a while.

Such maturity too.

Want WI to become a competitive side again, they have good talent, they just need to keep playing.

West Indies actually have a lot of potential. They have good youn players for different formats.

Shai Hope,Evin Lewis,Jason Holder,Kraigg Brathwaite,Alzarri Joseph,Hetmyer,Odean Thomas are just som names off the top of my head.

Alzarri Joseph is mediocre at best, Odean Thomas I don't know of. But the others give West Indies alot to work with. Let's not forget they also have one of the fastest bowlers in the world in Shannon Gabriel, who can prove to be devastating if used right.

Feels like the most natural successor to Lara technique-wise, looks imperious when he opens up and plays freely. But obviously still a long way to go.

1 of many talanted West Indies players. As long as West Indies back him, he'll come good.

His strike rotation seem pretty good . Seems to be very mentally strong player at the moment. Let us see how he does in the future

Gets to his century in 47 balls.

Some insane batting- power combined with elegance.

Makes batting look so easy.

Just a small chink he needs to work on:

A couple of games after his century he played against the Patriots and they got the better of him. They had watched the footage of his century and noticed he scored 40% of his run through mid-wicket/mid on. Their bowling plan to him was pretty straightforward- bowl wide of off-stump.

Hetmyer, in the context of a chase, struggled to score, got frustrated and threw his wicket away.

More than anything else, I think it's a matter of improving his ability to adjust and play the match situation. I have no doubt that will come with time.

Some insane hitting by him and Rutherford in tonight's match vs TKR.

I am a fan of the lad, but at the international level most of his dismissals are soft and he has to toughen up.

That's because Windies are even worse than us in identifying and nourishing talent. Hetmayer is an attacking bat with a loose technique who should have been blooded in T20s and ODIs first, but Windies put him up in tests.

As of now he has played 6 tests and averages a platry 29 in his 12 innings. On the other hand he averages 40 at 96 SR in the 12 ODIs he has played.

Windies cricketing structure is on par if not worse with Pakistan where not many want to actually go through the rigors of working hard as it is all about earning fast money through shortcuts.

What a talent!

Smashing Indian bowlers. SPin and fast both.

There is no Lara in him though. He's more of a Chris Gayle + Richie Richardson.

Op is a genius. I dont think i will ever come across someone who has such great technical knowledge about cricket. And i am not talking about PP alone. He has better knowledge, understanding and technical know how than cricket coaches.

Something I said 1.5 years ago. #Vindicated

Apart from Hetmyer, the batting looks really mediocre. Bowling doesn't look threatening either.

This current Windies team has a bright future. With Evin Lewis as one of the openers, Darren Bravo at 4, and Andre Russel in place of Rovman Powell, the batting is quite explosive. The additions of the Keemo Paul and Alzarri Joseph will also bolster the bowling significantly. Exciting times ahead.

This guy is Lara? lol What a joke. He is a one dimensional hitter. Bowlers were not using their brains to bowl to him. He will be found out soon.

Same issue again today (despite his brilliant start).

Thanks. Too much praise, don't know how to respond. This one was an easy one though. Shimron is truly gifted.

You know your stuff, Indeed.

Hope he doesn't fade out in 2 years time. Signs till now are very promising, so great news for WI cricket.

Is that the true worth of any batsman?

I am not fully sure what you mean, but if you are referring to athletes being overpaid then I agree. However, at the same time I also understand that they only make fraction of the teams that owns them as well as the management.

IPL teams spent like $15m from what I saw, i bet they will quadruple that amount overall.

He really struggled against BD. Needs to sort out his game against spin. Mehidy Hasan had dominated him this series.
