St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda: Veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the seventh highest Test match run maker in history, announced his international retirement on Friday, 22 years after his debut. The 41-year-old former captain from Guyana ends his Test career on 11,867 runs, just 86 short of the West Indies all-time record held by Brian Lara. Chanderpaul, a gritty and stubborn left-handed batsman made his debut against England in March 1994, in his native Guyana, where he made a half-century as the West Indies won by an innings and 44 runs.

His final Test was also against England last May in Barbados where the West Indies won by five wickets to level a three-Test series against Alastair Cook’s side. Chanderpaul’s highest score in Tests was 203 not out and he finished with an average of 51.37. He also posted a top score of 150 in ODIs, finishing with an average of 41.60. He hit a total of 30 Test centuries and 66 fifties. Shivnarine Chanderpaul humiliated by immigrant officials in his own country!

Possibly, his finest moment came in 2003 when he made 104 as the West Indies successfully chased a world-record 418 for victory in the final Test against Australia in Antigua. But the writing was on the wall for Chanderpaul when he was dropped for the two-Test series against Australia in June last year after making just 92 runs in the three Tests against England. In his last 10 Test innings, he reached 50 just once.

Chanderpaul posted a top score of 150 in his 268 ODIs, finishing with an average of 41.60 with his last 50-over match coming in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final loss to Pakistan in Dhaka. He made 8,778 one-day international runs with 11 centuries. Chanderpaul also played 22 times for the West Indies in the Twenty20 format, but his last outing was in 2010.

“The West Indies Cricket Board [WICB] acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally and we wish him all the best,” said WICB President Dave Cameron. Despite his international retirement, Chanderpaul has still been featuring for his regional team.

Last week, he was part of the Guyana side that lost in the semi-finals of the domestic 50-over tournament to Trinidad. Such was his determined nature at the crease that Australian spin bowling legend Shane Warne once famously described him as “a bloke you needed to crowbar away from the crease.” In 2008, Chanderpaul was named as one of the five Cricketers of the Year by Wisden.

Contrary to popular belief, I found his style elegant and quite a joy to watch

So underrated... Has done a lot for Windies in tough times. Sad way to go being neglected like this and replaced by a bunch of lazy kids

The lack of replies in this thread just sum his career up.

Excellent, gutsy player who was massively underrated.

A true test player. Attritional, low-risk, calculating. Unlike Samaraweera, he didn't hide behind the performances of the greats in his team. And unlike the current Aussie batsmen, he performed overseas as well.

As a kid, I remember how irritating Chanderpaul was.

He was the one who used to torture the Indian bowling.

Was the last symbol of a good West Indian side. Should've been included in their test squad they missed him badly. I guess WICB decided to invest in youth instead. Not every board is like PCB.

Wish him luck for the future. His son is an FC player too iirc, let's see where he goes.

His son is an even bigger tuktuk.

Should have retired two years ago when he really was applauded by everyone for his consistency and services to West Indian cricket. Now many wouldn't care as Chanders has been out of picture for too long. Anyway a great player in the Sangakkara, Kallis mould who would always score runs though not quite like in the same way as Lara and Tendulkar would. This is the end of a chapter for West Indies and world cricket. Personally proud of his Indian heritage. He's made the Indian community in Carribean proud by following the footsteps of Rohan Kanhai and Alvin Kalkicharan.

And with this probably the good days of West Indies officially comes to end..A great player and a great career ends..

Last real star to come out of windies cricket. So is Afridi now the oldest player from the 90's still playing international cricket?

A world class player who was under-rated who was never given the importance he deserves from his own country men leave alone the rest of the world

I think he played a lot of brilliant, yet slow, knocks. And I believe he was a quality ODI player too, better than some of the hacks like Dwayne smith who has an ODI average of 18 which is less than the average of tail-enders of Australian team. He would have been a perfect foil, a grafter along with some big hitter.

But hey, its hard to talk sense into people who has no idea about Cricket and how its meant to be played

Was hard done by. Hopefully he can play MCL in peace.

Loved watching him bat and was certainly still Windies' best bat in his last game.

How many players from the 90s still playing then? Afridi, Gayle? Who else?

Shoaib Malik and Harbhajan comes to mind.

Mamoon, not a legend?

Statistically yes but he didn't have much of an impact. Lived in Brian Lara and even Gayle's shadow for years.

Some people won't like it because he is kind of the Younis Khan of Caribbean cricket. Will be remembered as a legend by his fans but I don't think he will get to enjoy that status at a global level.

Another great indian origin West Indian batsman like Alvin Kalicharran and Rohan Kanhai

Should have been given the chance to break Laras record.End of a great career. Will he play in the MCL?

Never really rated the guy. If he was going to bat like that he should have been an opener or #3, setting up big scores instead of doing repair jobs.

One of my favorite batsmen who is always been under rated and always been playing selfless.

Funnily, the only thing I remember him by is those "Eye Blacks" that he used to wear.

That is all.

And his trademark way of marking the crease by hammering the bail into the pitch :))

Honestly, I was surprised to see how many runs he has scored. A statstical collossus yet I don't register a single memorable moment with him.

Wish him the best From the 90s after brian lara hes the best WI have produced

Although his style wasnt great it waz effective

Should have never been removed as their ODI opener.

Some of his best Test knocks:

Century at Lords. Think he had a chance to score two in the same match(128 and 97*)

69 ball century vs Australia. At the time it was the third fastest Test century, today that knock sits at #5.

Century in the 418 run chase vs Australia. Highest ever total successfully chased in Test cricket. He was awarded the Man of the match award despite only scoring 1 in the first innings.

Double century vs South Africa, double century vs Bangladesh. On both occasions he was not out on 203.

Maiden test ton vs India on a track where both teams struggled to score. Shiv was not out on 137 in a total of 298. Only one other batsman crossed 30 in that innings(Ambrose 37).

150 odd vs Pakistan at Kensington and 166 vs South Africa in St Kitts.

37-ball 50 down under vs Warne and Australia. He ended up scoring 71 from 68 before being dismissed by one of Warne's greatest ever deliveries.

Batting for 25+ hours without being dismissed. Or some absurd statistic. I think he also faced 1000+ deliveries without being dismissed on three occasions.

ODI'S

Maiden ODI ton vs India in the same series in which he scored his first Test ton. Chasing 200 for victory, he and Stuart Williams took the West Indies to victory without losing a wicket. Shiv dominated the partnership with some scintillating stroke play as he scored 109. He also wrapped up the Man Of The Series award after that match.

150 from 136 vs South Africa, leading West Indies to their only win on the ill-fated 98-99 tour of South Africa. West Indies were whitewashed 5-0 in the Test series and if I'm not mistaken, trounced 6-1 in the ODI's.

His second highest ODI score came against India in India when he scored 149 not out from 136 deliveries, almost leading West Indies to a remarkable victory, chasing 338 but falling 14 runs short. Next highest score for the West Indies was Gayle with 52.

Not bad for a guy who was always deemed to slow a scorer for ODI cricket. His two highest ODI scores are 150 and 149. Both at better than a run-a-ball.

His lone WC ton came at home in the Caribbean against Ireland in Jamaica.

Hit a 4 and a 6 off the last two deliveries bowled by Chaminda Vaas to win an ODI vs Sri Lanka.

I think he did something similar against NZ after having to retire hurt earlier in the innings.

26 runs off a Steve Harmisson over.

Gayle and Shiv were the last two openers in ODI's that were worth a grain of salt. As far as West Indies cricket goes.

Chanderpaul opened the batting in ODI's 77 times. That's more than any other position he batted in. 7 of his 11 career ODI centuries came as an opener.

Chanderpaul's career ODI average is 41.60, his average as an opener was 43.37. He sits 13th on the list of highest averages for an opener in ODI cricket(minimum 30 innings).

First Class

303 not out vs Jamaica in the Red Stripe Domestic Comepetion. He was only 21 at the time. If i recall correctly, Courtney Walsh played in that much and Jamaica fielded a pretty decent bowling line up. His 303 not out was scored from 478 deliveries at a strike rate of 63+.

A better test batsman than anyone currently playing for India, Australia, England, Sri Lanka or New Zealand. Show him some respect.

Retires as a great of the game ad joins the company of Inzamam, Sehwag, Clarke, Mahela and KP. He can be very proud of what he accomplished.

He's a great in my book no doubt, his reputation is derailed by being a part of the most pathetic team in recent years. Also screw you WICB! and their petty bigotry! dropped him the moment he went through a bit of a rough patch (despite being their best batsman) so that he doesn't go ahead of Lara. Who cares for records, we all know that Lara is the better batsman; what kind of example does this send to the rest who dream of being the leading run scorers for their country? No wonder their players run off to the IPL beyond all the financial incentives.

All the narrow minded nonsensical poor excuse for cricket fans will ignore this post because they are limited in their ability to grasp the sport, only true fans will appreciate how good shiv was.

Should have been given the chance to break Laras record.End of a great career. Will he play in the MCL?

Shiv had to announce retirement to play in MCL, WICB was insistent on getting retirement from eventhough he was retired for all practical reasons as WICB refused to select him. All the best to him on his MCL stint.

A world class performer and consistant batsmen, whether people liked they way he played or not he was effective. More often then not he would grind the opposition into the ground but there was always then a monster like aggressive inns now and then and one wonders why he didn't play like that more often.

The crappier the WI batsman got, shiv went more into his shell because as soon as he'd get out then it would be all over for the WI's. Playing too aggressively when wickets are tumbling around you is risky.

:O

I'm shocked just to be reading of this now, what a low-key retirement. He deserved a better send off. I always liked watching him bat and imo he has to go down as one of the games best ever. I think he was at the other end when Lara made his 375 waaaaay back in 1994. Now it really feels like the last remnants of The Great West Indian Teams of old have vanished.

Does this man ever age ? Has just scored a hundred for Lancashire in the County Championship.

Not in the WI Test squad.

One of the best WI have produced.

Stood by the team during their darkest days and piled on the runs as well.

Great player but sadly very underrated!

Very underated batsmen doesn't get the credit he deserves. Deserved a farewell game at international level. May have not been pretty to watch, but he certainly knew how to score runs and occupy the crease.

Just scored a 180+ for Lancashire. Such a great character. And he absolutely adores and loves batting. Lots of Englishmen are going to be learning a great deal batting alongside him, something the new generation of WI batsmen should be doing.
