Who is a better batsmen between the two? Two known names. Dont think stats are required.

Shiv - compare the bowling attacks he scored his hundreds against to Alastair Cook's.

Consider also that he hid at #5 waiting for the old ball, while Cook took the brunt.

Cook. People judge openers harshly. They cannot be expected to average 50 + when they are the ones who are facing the new ball every time.

Not a fair comparison, Cook is a lot more valuable.

Shiv was an inferior Younis Khan, don't let stats fool you.

Both are brilliant players. Chanders is underrated a lot due to his style of play. It is an unfair comparison, Cook opens the batting for England and Chanders played in the middle order.

Yes, he hid down the order even though the top four were already weak.Should have batted in top 4 post Lara's retirement because most of his runs afterwards were useless.

Tbh, I dont agree with this personally because there is no similarity between the two and they are completely different types of player. The only similarity I find is that these two never got enough limelight outside their country and always remained in the shadow of other players.

Shiv was easily better across all-conditions unlike Younis but Shiv runs were mostly useless during the latter part because he would come after the damage is already done. In contrast, Younis khan had been far more impactful.

Shiv was much more important to to his team than Younis Khan. Shiv was literally a 1-man army in entire second half of his career. Younis had Yousuf, Inzamam in first half, and later Azhar, Misbah and Shafiq. We shouldn't undermine Shiv's contribution, it's not easy to score runs in a garbage team.

Chanderpaul comfortably. Better average and played in a much tougher period for batsman. Also had to deal with having little to no support in the batting line up once Lara went.

Alistair cook Its a no mean feat to be avging 45 opening for the majority in england

Shiv was solid but just not impactful A lot of the time post lara it seemed he was playing for his not out than for the tean

Chanderpaul is perhaps the worst 50+ average player who only seemed to play for himself and behind the top order while the likes of Lara would carry him.

Alistair Cook's runs had a more profound impact on the fortunes of his side and as mentioned by some on here, he was facing the new ball from ball 1.

Technically Cook was a better player on the backfoot and against spin as well.

He should have taken responsibility and gone in at #3. WI would have won more tests then.

Happy Birthday to Chanderpaul - Fawad Alam's inspiration?

I guess Shiv holds the record of scoring the most Test runs and most Test centuries in loses? Those records were previously held by Brian Lara, until Shiv surpassed them.
