Should ICC reintroduce the Champions Trophy?

ICC scrapped 50 over Champions Trophy in 2017. They felt 1 flagship 50 over tournament is enough and that is World Cup.

However with so many washed out matches, revenues have been drained, there are 2-3 more washouts on the cards. 50 Over Cricket has been hit hard. Broadcasters are not happy, fans are unsatisfied.

Given all these circumstances can or should ICC be encouraged to reintroduce ICC Champions Trophy again possibly in 2021 or 2022.
Tournament only takes 15-16 days to be completed and 8 best teams participate. ICC Test Championship can continue as per schedule but it is risky to rely on only 1 flagship 50 over event.

My opinion is that ICC Champions Trophy has long history, it was introduced in 1998. So it is not new event. ICC is hurting its own revenue by scrapping ICC Champions trophy.

Yes this round robin format is rubbish no excitement need to have knockout games :root

CT isn't a replacement for world cup. So as appealing as it sounds, it doesn't have any realistic purpose.

CT was never a glorified tournament ever. Infact it was about to be scrapped. World cup which allows non-test countries to participate should be the ultimate cup. Infact they should have included more countries this year.

Better to create a Knockout Trophy with best 32 Teams and having direct elimination matches.

With a round of 32, then 16, QuaterFinals, Semi-Finals and a Final.

Knockout matches are always more exciting even with weaker teams, because they will last only 1 match if they don't step up and hence wouldn't effect the broadcasting money, but this could backfire greatly if Pakistan or India loses their first match in a upset.

The last line is why this won't happen. But would have been a thrilling experience otherwise.

I like Champions Trophy but perhaps the format should be revised. Add more teams and make it a knockout tournament.

Even, if big 3 are eliminated for some reason, it won't be a big deal.

My suggestion is 16 teams in 4 groups of 4. Top 2 teams from each group qualify for quarter-final.

The tournament will have a total of 27 games.

20 group games + 4 quarter-finals in 12 days (2 games a day)
2 semi-finals and 1 final in 3 days (one game a day)

The whole tournament will end in less than 3 weeks including the rest days.

Forgot 2007 world cup? lol That is exactly why they changed the format. Pakistan's total record in ICC champions Trophy history is one of the worst W/L ratio of 0.916. Only major country that has W/L ratio under 1.00. Just above Bangladesh, Kenya, Netherlands, USA, Zimbabwe. India has the best record in ICC CT with a win loss ratio of 2.250. Everyone else 1.5 or below. This is inspite of Pak winning in 2017. Imagine their performance in CT all those years.

I didn't that's why I wrote that last line, which I think you missed.

Also, this isn't a World Cup format. I am saying we should have a World Cup as it is and together with it a Knockout Trophy every 4 years making it 2 50 over formats in span of 4 years.

ICC should be brave enough and let a big upset take place for the greater hood of game, also they would still have the actual World Cup with big teams playing more matches even if they lose early on in the format I suggested.

At the expanse of broadcasters? They will take a huge hit and this idea will never be implemented again just like 2007 wc format.

It will be overkill with everything that is going on. T20 leagues, Test championship, ODI bilaterals, world T20. As it is we have far too many matches are going on. Afghanistan has also been added as a Test nation.

Is this WC really a failure? I actually am not sure about that. I found sell out crowd in almost every game, there is tremendous mass interest even for neutral games in BD, IND (which covers almost 80% cricket population) and every team trying their best on field. I think World Cup will always be World Cup, no matter how many games are washed out or what individual team (s) does. And, this format is excellent for a fair judgement - only that they should do it with 12 teams (66+3 = 69) games.

But, I am for a return of ICC CT - every 4 years, may be in last format or with 12 teams in 4 groups with 8 to advance in QF>SF>F route.

But this isn't the World Cup, It should just be a exciting tournament giving chances to more teams together with a World Cup anyway.

Also, I know it wouldn't be implemented because of the money caring only ICC.

It is not a failure. But this moronic scheduling robbed the fun for everyone.

We should limit these useless matches then, a different themed event will never be a overkill, rather it would be exciting event with compelling viewing if every thing goes to plan. It is just too risky for Management like ICC to implement, otherwise it would been perfect for everyone.

Ok so now since Pakistan won the last CT that is the best send since they are going down in WC we need to replace it with CT
Great

I don’t have an issue with CT being reintroduced. A smaller competition with all games being pressurised is entertaining cricket.

No. There is no point now that the WC is just 10 teams. Champions Trophy is literally just the World Cup with 2 less teams and a different format. Also, Pakistan will forever be the Champions Trophy champions :)

ICC should just bring back the Knockout Cup ideally with 16 teams, but they'd probably do 8. With an 8 team tournament they can literally finish it in a week, short and sweet. set it up so that at the #1 team faces #8 in the first round, #2 faces #7 and so on. If somebody gets knocked out early, it's not that big of a deal as the tournament is 7 games in total. This tournament should happen every 2 years in the even years (2020,2022,2024...). Also allow some smaller countries to host it since all the major competitions in the future are in Big 3 countries. Allow the Windies to host it, allow New Zealand or Bangladesh to host it, hopefully one day we can host it too.

Doing a knockout cup with 16 teams would be great too as there are actually 16 teams with ODI status now. Still an upset would be pretty unlikely, as the #1 would face the #16 and so on. The tournament would still only be 15 games. ICC make it happen!

What i really like to see is more tri nation or 4 nation tournaments. Bored of bilateral ODIs.

Bring back Sharjah Cup, Australasia cup!

Agree with this its something I thought about too How ever I had 16 teams in mind and originally I had it as a t20 tournament
