Given the emergence of superpower India in world cricket and the fact, India has a habit of renaming things that represent the era of colonialism I find it strange that their premier FC trophy is named after a gentleman who never played for India at any level, or indeed played in India at all. Added to this he encouraged his nephew to play for England too.

While it may be understandable that he played Tests for England he was quite anglicized. It sounds like he was a big supporter of the empire too and was criticised by many for doing zilch for Indian cricket.

Why does India still have the trophy named after someone who had nothing to do with Indian Cricket? Are they still hankering for a time when they were allowed to play side by side with Englishmen?

What about SMAT?
Syed Mushtaq Ali represented for India in only 11 tests and scored 612 runs.

Mushtaq Ali was the discovery of C. K. Nayudu who observed him at Indore at the age of 13 and helped to develop his cricketing skills.

There were many great players than SMA but not sure why the Indian domestic T20 series is named after him.

Yeah, I'm surprised some BJP nutjob hasn't tried to rename the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

Then again, they haven't renamed their bastion of "Ahmed"-abad either.

Just name every domestic prize competition after tendulkar then
Why do only great players qualify?

First indian to score a test century overseas I think thats why

Ranji was a Maharaja & most Maharajas in those days were very loyal to the British - else they risked losing their kingdom & life of luxury

No point judging him too harshly on that account. Just a product of his times !

Instead BCCI should privatize 10-20% of it .. allowing other corporations to invest and make it more profitable.

Although it has gotten better but some teams can improve even more and invest in many other players.

Name change doesn’t matter, Ranji trophy is extremely prestigious as we know it already.

I love it when Indian fans call India superpower of Cricket despite having not so superpowerish record.

Plenty of them wanted to do so, however because its a UNESCO heritage city, renaming it would jeopardize that.

I'm not Indian lol.

I've just been reading up on different FC structures around the world ( slow day at work). I just found it slightly strange that despite India renaming things from the British era and dominating world cricket financially they still name the tournament after a guy who never played a game in the country.

That was awarded in 2017. If BJP wanted they would’ve done so under when Modi was CM of Gujarat. Quite frankly us Gujjus don’t even say Ahmedabad, rather it’s pronounced as Amdavad.

They keep on bringing the renaming up. They either want to rename it, or are doing it for votes.

And you can pronounce it whatever way you want, or rename it for all I care. However the fact is the walled Old City was built by Ahmed Shah from scratch. And the people who want it renamed are doing it out of pure hatred.

Believe me normal folks don’t give a toss about who built the city, heck I only found out just now. Political leaders are doing for some voters as you mentioned but ground realities is that most folks don’t give a toss about it. I bet more than 90% off gujjus won’t have even heard of Ahmed Shah. Renaming cities is like political phenomenon which started in 90s with renaming of Bombay to Mumbai, and most recently Bangalore to Bengaluru( can’t even pronounce it)

There is some history behind most of the names and should be persisted with, except "Qazzafi Stadium" .

Sad news:

Awful news. And scary that someone so young could fall prey to cardiac complications, someone who played sport and presumably stayed fit.

Only the important spiritual centres for Hindus like Prayag (Allahabad) have been renamed back to their old Hindu names.

Ahmedabad isn't a spiritual centre for Hindus. That's why it has not been renamed. There were attempts to change its name to Karnavati, but no one was interested.

The SMA Trophy will retain its name.

Sporting trophies dont have to be named after an athelete

Yes yes MUGHALSARAI railway station was also a spiritual railway station of ancient times that is why it is renamed as DEEN DAYAL UPADHYAY RAILWAY STATION.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday decided to postpone the start of the Ranji Trophy season due to rising COVID cases in the country. India's premier domestic cricket tournament was scheduled to start from January 13. The board informed the same through a press release.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the postponement of the Ranji Trophy, Col C K Nayudu Trophy & Senior Women's T20 League for the 2021-22 season in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The Ranji Trophy & Col C K Nayudu Trophy were scheduled to begin this month while the Senior Women's T20 League was scheduled to commence in February," the BCCI release stated.

"BCCI does not want to compromise the safety of the players, support staff, match officials and other participants involved and hence, has decided to put the three tournaments on hold till further notice. The BCCI will continue to assess the situation and take a call on the start of the tournaments accordingly.

"BCCI thanks and continues to appreciate the efforts of the healthcare workers, state associations, players, support staff, match officials and all the service providers who put their best foot forward to host more than 700 matches across 11 tournaments in the current 2021-22 domestic season," the release further stated.

The first round was to start in multiple cities on January 13 but has been put off and the BCCI will deliberate on when to conduct the blue riband tournament some time later.

Recently, the Bengal team reported six COVID-19 cases, including five players while Mumbai's India player Shivam Dube also tested positive and is in isolation.

The Ranji Trophy is being held in six cities including Bengaluru and Kolkata among others.

"Alex Ferguson Of Ranji Trophy": Dinesh Karthik Lauds Chandrakant Pandit After Madhya Pradesh Win Ti

India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik lauded coach Chandrakant Pandit after Madhya Pradesh registered their first Ranji Trophy title win.

Madhya Pradesh scripted history on Sunday as they registered their first-ever Ranji Trophy title win. The Aditya Shrivastava-led side triumphed over domestic heavyweights Mumbai in the summit clash by six wickets. Chasing 108, Madhya Pradesh took just 29.5 overs to get over the line and in the end, Rajat Patidar remained unbeaten on 30 as he hit the winning runs for his side. As Patidar hit the winning shot, the entire crowd erupted with RCB, RCB chants as the batter plays for the Bengaluru-based franchise in the IPL.

However, the credit for Madhya Pradesh's win has to go to coach Chandrakant Pandit, who knows to how to win Ranji Trophy. Pandit has now won Ranji Trophy six times as a coach. He had led Mumbai to three titles, Vidharbha to two titles and now has taken Madhya Pradesh all the way.

India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik took to Twitter to praise Pandit, and Madhya Pradesh on winning Ranji title.

"Lovely pictures bcci, Couldn't be happier for CHANDU sir . Amazing, Understanding personality traits, Preparing them accordingly, Using them tactically to win championships. ALEX FERGUSON of RANJI trophy #GOAT," tweeted Karthik.

It is important to note that Chandrakant Pandit had lost the Ranji finals as a player in 1999 while leading Madhya Pradesh against Karnataka and now 23 years later, life came full circle as Madhya Pradesh won the title on the same ground.

Talking about the win after the final, Pandit said: "It is a great memory that I had left 23 years back (he lost the Ranji Trophy final as MP captain in 1998-99) and it is a blessing that I come back here, and winning this trophy was fabulous. It is emotional because I missed out as captain on the same ground. There is no a particular reason but I look for a challenging job where the teams are not doing well, there also should be youngsters and to develop that particular state. I used to play for MP and played for them for six years, I knew the culture and when the offer came to me in March, I did not hesitate."
