Should parenting be taught as a subject in high-schools/Universities?

This is a huge part of our lives that we go through - many of us (most I would think) learn lessons the hard way but would it be not a good idea to help young adults learn about parenting at the school level - in the same way Sex education is done?

I am not sure what the syllabus would be but I am open to suggestions.

Nope.

Parenting is a skill and knowledge passed down from, well, parental experience. Sex education should also be taught at home, not at schools. Daughters are taught how to be mothers from their mother, and boys taught how to be fathers from their father. Tried and tested system for over 5000 years.

Every child is different, and some mumbo jumbo liberal class on parenting will never apply to all kids or scenarios.

We've seen the effects of schools teaching children as young as 6, transgenderism, and the morning after pill, and hey presto, we now have a generation of confused kids, kids who are boys now pretending to be girls, and vice versa, and girls who are brainwashed into believing that wanton sex is fine.

I am sure SJWs will not mind the state taking over to puah their agenda, but certain subjects must be taught at home.

Perhaps schools should teach the importance of normality instead, i.e. the best parents consist of a man and a woman, a father and a mother, there are only 2 genders, and a monkey is no substitute to a human father - instead of pseudo SJW nonsense.

I agree that if parenting is being taught by radical liberals, it is harmful and shouldn't be done.

However, if traditional/normal parenting is being taught, I support that.

Managing money can also be taught at home, the problem is, in a country where the economy exists, and only exists on debt, managing money becomes a moot point.

Better off having lessons on how to manage debt, how to consolidate debts, leverage debt, and paying off debt. Of course all more so pertinent after university debt!

As for parenting skills, parenting is purley subjective. What works with one sibling may not work with another sibling. At best schools can teach how to change a nappy, how to prepare a bottle of milk at room temperature, and what type of pushchairs are practical, especially when on holiday.

Teach kids to value honesty and love. Everything will fall into place after that. No need to teach parenting at school.

When I was at school, we had a weekly class on Home Economics. Taught us the basics of cooking sewing, and first aid.

parenting doesn't need to be taught formally, one size doesn't fit all, and there is no one anyone can police who has kids and who doesn't, so even failing formal parenting classes wont stop anyone from having kids.

its far better to encourage families to retain some influence from two parents, but lets be real here, kids under 10 are very diff to teens, even in a pre social media era i learned all sorts of stuff my parents would rather i didnt from my freinds.

learning to differentiate between right and wrong without someone watching over you is a part of growing up.

this! theres a lot of good posters i used to read who simply dont even post anymore. I'm pretty sure u remember how good some of the discussions used to be.

Great thread by the OP. Money management , very basics of parenting should be and is taught in schools. I think it’s called home economics . I never took it as was not mandatory. Great subject to bring up by the OP.

Reason I started this thread was I was on a zoom call with Shehzad Saleem on this topic this morning and this is what he mentioned.

Some excellent insights into how we can tackle issues related to our children, especially the young adults.

A few important things

1. Never quarrel in front of children
2. Never force religion down their throats
3. Don't live in denial if they tell you of their problems such as alcohol, drug etc addictions

Some commonsense stuff but some thought provoking aspects also

What next a subject on how to take a shower and brush teeth? There is no guarantee if you will become a good or bad parent even if you get a PHD in parenting from an Ivy League school.

Plenty of well educated folks turn out to be horrible parents.

To be honest, many people probably don't know how to effectively take showers. They probably need lessons. Same with brushing teeth.

Our schools should teach practical things instead of teaching useless theories.

Agreed - but husband wife are equals and we can learn but a child's future can be changed by good parenting.
