Should Quinton de Kock give up the gloves and bat up the order in Tests?

Quinton De Kock - should he keep the gloves in Tests or not?

De kock is fantastic odi player and is now showing his talent in the test match arena. In LO he is opening whilst in tests he is batting at 7. I personally think he is wasted at 7, whilst he can do damage there he often could find himself running out of partners as South Africas tail isn't long. I think if he was batting at 4 or 5 and to bat a couple of sessions he could take the game away from the opposition. At number 7 he may not be allowed this chance.

So the debate is should South Africa play him as a specialist bat in tests or keep him at 7 with the gloves?

Not a good enough batsmen currently and SA don't have that many luxury in their batting line up to play De Kock as a specialist batsmen.They are many things to be looked at if this happens.

Then you have to resolve quota iissues and this idea isn't really going to help the cause.

De kock should bat at 7 and make sure he stops any kind of batting collapse if happens on any particular day.

Elgar,Cook,Bavuma, De Kock are 4 good odi players SA have found.Three of them are young and have solid potential.

Then you have AB and Amla.

One spot is there for Faf or Duminy.

Why would you go for some other keeper and make this side a little weaker?

Fifth bowling option is the problem anyways and can't be ignored either..

You can't assume this simply on basis of just one comment made and that also on which the clarification was also given.He is currently the official test captain.So such statements have no authority.

When seniors retire,younger ones would move up the order undoubtedly but that is still some way to go.

SA might well go into another downward phase when AB,Amla, Steyn calls it off.These younger guys do have to adjust quickly to their roles.

Difficult to keep and open the batting especially as he keeps in LO. It's a lot to burden someone with.

Gilchrist was part of an ATG team. de Kock is good enough (compared to the other SA batsmen) to bat up the order.

And Gilly was easily the third, if not second best batsman from that team but since he was a keeper, his position was #7. de Kock is not a better test batsman than Amla or de Villiers, can't open and Bavuma would be a passenger if he is dropped to #7.

All logic points to de Kock batting at #7 and keeping wickets.

Think ABCD should take gloves again. He doesn't have the same drive anymore as a test batsman and would rather play t20 IPL funfest cricket, so give him the easiest job batting wise. Let de Kock bat higher up as he's more committed.

Yeah he should. Good keepers in domestic are: Dane Vilas, Clyde Fortuin, Rudi Second, Zakir Kathrada, Kyle Verreynne, Mangaliso Mohsehle, Heinrich Klaasen, Brendon Louw and Lefa Mosena. SA is packed w/keepers.

Even Adam Gilchrist batted at 7 in tests and opened in ODIs, so why can't Quinton de Kock do the same?

If Quinton de Kock has a average of 45+ with strike rate of 75+ in tests and plays as the wicket-keeper, he will have a succesful career and will even be called ATG

De Kock is clearly South Africa's best bat right now and one of the best in the world at the tender age of 24. Should he really be coming in at number 7 in Tests? I feel like he is being denied the chance to really shine with the bat by the current composition of the South African team.

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for de Kock to bat in the top order and have someone like Kuhn or someone else keep wickets?

Don't know if stopping keeping is necessary, but he should bat at 5, he's a good, dynamic player and he could do so much more there.

Although an advantage of being at 7 is, if the top order does decently, he comes into the game when bowlers have had a long time on the field, and he scores quick runs.
