Should the Government of Pakistan change Benazir Income Support Programme name?

As this is a government-backed income support program and it is indirectly benefiting a political party.

Before the elections & recently GDA(Grand Democratic Alliance) demanded that the Government of Pakistan should change Benazir Income Support Programme name.

So what are your thoughts?

Days after the federal government's reported intention to amend the name of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) drew ire of the PPP, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday announced that the name of the cash transfer poverty programme would not be changed.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, the minister revealed that the recent controversy regarding reports of a planned change in the name of BISP was discussed by the federal cabinet in its meeting today, and clarified that "the name of the programme is not being amended."

The minister announced that the cabinet, which met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair, had decided to raise a new division for poverty alleviation, which he claimed was a first in Pakistan's history. It will be called the Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Division.

Dismissing rumours of BISP being done away with, he said the government has introduced a poverty alleviation programme under which various social welfare schemes such as the Sehat Insaf Card, business loans and low-cost housing programme will be run.

"BISP will continue in its place but these programmes will be launched in addition to it under the umbrella of the 'Ehsas' programme," the minister revealed.

It was earlier reported that during his visit to Sindh's Ghotki district on Saturday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had reportedly agreed with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf allies that the name of BISP should be changed after they alleged that the PPP was misusing the poverty alleviation project.

The PPP had vowed to resist the reported plan tooth and nail, with its chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari alleging that the government was "conspiring" to wrap up BISP by initially changing its name and then reducing its funds.

It is unlikely to happen because this proposal has been severely criticized by all quarters including PTI supporters.

The BISP is the largest welfare support program in Pakistan. The reason why Imran wanted the name changed is because he cannot digest the name of Benazir and PPP associated with something good.

However, the masses have seen through his insecurities and pettiness and have rightfully condemned the idea.

PTI saw the signs and backtracked promptly. The statement of Minister of Propaganda Fawad Chaudhry implied that the name will not be changed.

Absolutely. It is fund of pakistan tax payer and local Pakistanis .it should be named as "Pakistan income support program"rather than name after corrupt politician like benazir bhutto

Nobody has condemned the idea except beneficiaries of Corruption. Go any forum and you will see that everybody is for the change. Why should any on going govt programme be named after any Politician, never a corrupt one whose family are fighting tooth and nail to hide their stolen wealth.

Might aswell rename before Imran decides to close the whole thing down because he can't stand another party doing good and leaving there mark.


The BISP works on Consumer Price Index. SO what basically Imran is trying to do is, as the funds will most probably increase in the next budget, he wants the name change and then go on about how his nw program gives out more money.

When in reality it has to give out more money as the change in Price Index has been because of his party continuing to increase inflation.

I think PTI needs to be reminded that they need to get a majority in Senate first to even make such moves.

Even PPP has more seats.

What were they expecting? PPP will vote in their favor?

I changed my mind on the name change for BISP, after PTI launched the Sehat Insaf Card. In a perfect scenario their would be no names of political leaders or parties in development projects.

Also regardless of what you think of Benazir politically, she was the first Muslim woman to be a Prime Minister, so she deserves to have her name on something to honor her, might as well be BISP.

BISP is run by the federal government and not the provincial government.
Given that the federal governemt is one providing the cash for BISP, they have the right to change the name. Why should the federal government pay for a program, who's purpose is to win votes for the PPP ?

If the PPP have an issue, they can provide the cash for BISP out of their own pockets and have the program under the Sindh Government for the poor of of Sindh.
