Signature Shots

I dont know, If any one of you watched it but Younis Khan played a Helicopter shot for four today

His signature shot is surely sweep though
 
A signature shot of a batsman is a good indicator of his quality. Any batsman whose signature shot is the sweep is not a real batsman.

Sweep shot is a secondary shot in cricket - not one of the primary shots. Natural and pure batsman have one of the primary shots as signature.

Sweep is a more technical shot and harder to execute to perfection as compared to classic shots e.g a staright drive....You might not like younis...but Sweep is a really important shot in modern day test cricket and not many can execute it to perfection..like YK does
 
Sweep is hard to execute, but it's not a natural and primary cricket shot. Many great batsman don't need to use it.
 
I remember Graham Gooch playing the sweep with great success against the SC spinners in his time.

Name me one great batsman in the past 20 years who was good against spin and didn't use the sweep.
 
And there's a difference between using it as your only shot against spin like Younis and occasionally using it like Dravid.

The tag of defending champions sat comfortably with India when they locked horns with England at the Wankhede Stadium. Kapil did the first thing right by winning the toss. But the move to insert England backfired as India had to contend with Graham Gooch – quite prolific throughout the World Cup.

Dislodging Gooch early was the key to India’s plans of gaining an upperhand, but all such thoughts were buried as Gooch frustrated the Indian attack with tactical brilliance. Unperturbed by the loss of fellow opening partner Tim Robinson and Bill Athey, Gooch put England on a firm footing with a superb century stand with captain Mike Gatting.

Gooch employed the sweep profitably and proficiently to tackle the Indian left-arm spin duo of Maninder Singh and Ravi Shastri.


India had something to cheer about when Maninder dismissed Gatting and seven runs later, ended Gooch’s resistance – but not before he had scored 115. Allan Lamb kept England going and took his side to 254 for 6 in the allotted 50 overs.

Gatting once revealed how Gooch perfected the sweep shot at the nets. “Graham Gooch practised for two days by sweeping the left-arm spinners at the nets. He kept playing the shot in front of square and behind square at the nets and got ready for the game,” he once said about the detailed planning that went behind their preparations for the semi-final match.

Phil Defreites made early inroads knocking over Sunil Gavaskar’s off-stump in what the legend’s last international outing. Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Navjot Singh Sidhu got a partnership going, but they never quite dominated the England bowlers. Neil Foster came into the attack and snuffed out Srikkanth and Sidhu to leave India in fair amount of unease. Mohammed Azharuddin and Chandrakant Pandit initiated a recovery process before Foster jettisoned Pandit.

Azharuddin kept the Indian chase alive with a brief fifth-wicket stand with Kapil Dev, before the Indian captain played a shot that bordered on impetuosity – one that is still talked about as the indiscretion which cost India the match. Kapil went for a might heave off Eddie Hemmings but holed out to Mike Gatting at deep mid-wicket.

The home crowd was beginning to fear the worst as a downcast Kapil trudged off the ground. But Indian hopes were alive and kicking as long as Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri were there in the middle. But a pall of disappointment descended the Wankhede Stadium when Eddie Hemmings trapped Azharuddin lbw to push India closer to defeat.

Sangakarra's cover drive. I've not seen a better one from someone else. It's just the most exquisite signature shot I've seen. Here's a compilation to highlight it's beauty.

Misbah = reverse sweep

EVERY Pakistani batsmen = a slog tulla towards deep mid-wicket.

So Younis Khan and Javed Miandad(reverse sweep was one of his signature shots ) are not real batsman?
 
Miandad was a very good player of pace too and had a great cover drive and square cut. He was very innovative as well.

Younis on the other hand is mediocre against pace and lacks the ability to dominate them. Against spin he's very good but not even in the top 3 today and against pace he's not even in the top 15.

Has great determination and fighting attitude but purely based on batting quality, he is not a top drawer batsman.

Remember him playing that shot quite a few times during his first tour of Australia at Perth and Sydney.

My picks would be: (This is not necessarily their best shots, but my favourites).

Sachin straight drive.
Lara square cut.
Ponting pull shot.
Dravid square cut.
Dada cover drive.
Sanga cover drive and inside out chip.
KP and Hayden walk in towards the bowler and marauding him.

There was this joke around when we were in school that Shoaib Akhtar starts from the boundary for his run up. He gathers all his energy for a magic delivery. He runs in like a speeding train and delivers a 160 kmph thunderbolt at the batsman. Dravid meanwhile coolly blocks that one straight into the ground. Shoaib gets frustrated and raises the white flag:akhtar
