A city of 15 million people generates more money than reasonably well developed state of 115 million? Wow.
I think it’s more impressive that Islamabad which is aprox. 15x smaller than Karachi generates half as much revenue as Karachi.
And without having a port , it helps when its the capital though.
I am sure Karachi has a population with fine business acumen, but does it being a port city have something to do with the city's success in generating revenue, or would it be easy to replicate this in other provinces?
Thats not the issue here.
The issue here is if yoh visit lahore, the govt has renovated the whole city. Tried to provide every favility but karachi has been ignored, or infact whole of sindh.
Even islamabad and rawalpindi are ignored aswell.
https://fbr.gov.pk/Categ/FBR-RevenueDivision-YearBook/358FBR has collected Rs. 3,842 billion during FY 2017-18 against Rs. 3,368 billion during FY 2016-17 denoting a growth of around 14.1%.
I highly doubt the authenticity of this study. I remember back when the NFC award came to be statistics came up which showed Punjab generates some 60% of Pakistan's revenue but their share of it was revised down to 50%. I read the same statistics in Anatol Lieven's book "Pakistan a hard country".

And yet these days it feels like Karachi is one of the most underdeveloped and least invested in.
The people of Punjab specially the Punjabi elite should thank, after Allah, the people of Karachi, we have been subsidizing their alishaan lifestyle since independence. No wonder the people of Karachi feel aggrieved, government after government (including the present one) just want revenue from Karachi but do not want to invest in its development.
Karachi doesn't get its fair share, this is the main reason behind the demand for a separate province for Karachi.
Well honestly looking at the state of Khi its probably a good move for it.I mean its the city the whole country basically rests on in terms of revenue. It needs to be looked after.
