What's new

So who pays to run Pakistan?

A city of 15 million people generates more money than reasonably well developed state of 115 million? Wow.

Big claim by this study - so should Karachi get more development money?

It's sad to see how undeveloped sindh( exclude Karachi obviously), balochistan and KPK are. This is the reason we see majority of the terrorist attacks happening in kpk and balochistan.

There's no use of using the money on already developed states that you forget about the developing ones.
Pakistan should be safe wherever we go not just limited to karachi and Punjab

Not surprising when major commercial activity is concentrated in a couple of cities.

It's the same in India.

Mumbai alone generated more revenue and gives more tax than many states combined.

This is true. A while back I read Karachi was generating around 70% revenue of the whole Country. Yet every government sucks the money for their own use and do nothing for the city. No one, literally no one in power can clean and take the trash out of the city and are just blabbing on the TV. This city is important and has so much potential outside of the port even that it could alone help life countries economy.

The people of Punjab specially the Punjabi elite should thank, after Allah, the people of Karachi, we have been subsidizing their alishaan lifestyle since independence. No wonder the people of Karachi feel aggrieved, government after government (including the present one) just want revenue from Karachi but do not want to invest in its development.

In the federal areas, mostly govt workers live there.

What are the demographics of punjab and lahore

I am sure Karachi has a population with fine business acumen, but does it being a port city have something to do with the city's success in generating revenue, or would it be easy to replicate this in other provinces?

I think it’s more impressive that Islamabad which is aprox. 15x smaller than Karachi generates half as much revenue as Karachi.

And without having a port , it helps when its the capital though.

But islamabad is a place where mainly you will find govt workers or army families.

People involved in business dont really live here. Like there are few but not as many as you will find in gujranwala, lahore, sialkot or karachi.

Thats not the issue here.

The issue here is if yoh visit lahore, the govt has renovated the whole city. Tried to provide every favility but karachi has been ignored, or infact whole of sindh.

Even islamabad and rawalpindi are ignored aswell.

I am surprised that PPP didn't address this when they were in power as their power base in Sindh. Now Imran Khan should be lobbied. Although he has never had a good relationship with the Karachi press as a cricketer, this would be the perfect opportunity to show he is the leader of whole Pakistan, not just Punjab or Khyber areas.

And the irony is that Highest revenue Generator Karachi in it's current state has been turned into a filthy gutter.

I highly doubt the authenticity of this study. I remember back when the NFC award came to be statistics came up which showed Punjab generates some 60% of Pakistan's revenue but their share of it was revised down to 50%. I read the same statistics in Anatol Lieven's book "Pakistan a hard country".

Yes lets "highly doubt" the source coming from FEDERAL BUREAU OF REVENUE, the actual body designated to collect revenue and instead believe some random book. Well done, you cannot make up this level of bias :salute

On second thought I may be mixing figures here with GDP. Will have to check later.

And yet these days it feels like Karachi is one of the most underdeveloped and least invested in.

Karachi doesn't get its fair share, this is the main reason behind the demand for a separate province for Karachi.

Punjab has an agricultural base and because of low to nil taxes on agricultural income, there numbers are low. Same with Sindh (apart from Karachi, Hyderabad).

What this tells us is that feudals of central/South Punjab and Sindh are the ones sucking the blood of this country. Shareefs, Tareens, Zardaris etc are making billions through agriculture produce, sugar/steel Mills, poultry, property and are transferring the income into offshore bank accounts without paying any taxes.

Karachi has been mistreated. Without Karachi this country would be in an even worse state that it already is

Yup.

Well honestly looking at the state of Khi its probably a good move for it.I mean its the city the whole country basically rests on in terms of revenue. It needs to be looked after.

What does the guy mean by a seperate province for Karachi?

Edit:
Nevermind

Karachi is the city of lights. Can’t believe such a big and important city is ignored so much. PM should personally take notice of this.

Karachi is too big & too dirty. I would advice to break Karachi into 2 or more smaller cities for better management and thus better quality of life.

A significant amount of the direct tax in Pakistan is paid by large corporations. Most of these corporations have headquarters in Karachi. Even though these corporations, e.g. Habib Bank, make money all over Pakistan and abroad they pay tax from Karachi, hence Karachi appearing favourably in tax paid statistics.

Move the HQs of these companies and Karachi's share of tax paid will fall dramatically. Remove the access these companies have to the rest of Pakistan, especially Punjab and the profits of these companies, and hence tax paid out of Karachi will fall dramatically.

That said, no taking away from the fact Karachi has been criminally neglected on a range of issues from water supply to transportation.
