ODIs . India 5-1
T20s India 2-1

More importantly, did India take the bees saal ka badla?

I think India will be miffed that they didn't win the Tests. It was possible, with better team selection.

India overall. They finished the tour on a better note, they proved that if they had arrived earlier and had a better chance to acclimitize they could have beaten South Africa. However it remains to be seen if India will ever get a golden chance like this to beat South Africa in South Africa in a test series ever again so it was a missed opportunity

SA won the main series so they won the tour. We are not discraced like we usually are on these tours.

For me, what mattered was the Test result. However, the kind of performance India has had from the 3rd Test onwards is nothing less than something that goes to folklore.

Have to say India. Competed well in the tests, dominated LOI leg

ODIs . India 4-1
T20s India 2-1

For me the test series loss will always shadow the LOI win. A test series win would have been historic. The LOI leg was great, but nothing that is career defining.

Overall score is 8-4 in India's favor. Tests, of course count for more, but winning 2 of the 3 series gives India a slight edge.

Badla will happen next time India tours SA.

only a handful of players showed up. Yet India won. Inconsistent team selection let India down.

No doubt it was India. They should have won the Test series as well.

Should be tie. South Africa looked better side till they had all their players fit.

SA by a whisker, India should have won the first test.We lost the most important series so sad but happy overall after first 2 test losses

After losing the first 2 Tests, we went 8-2 in the remaining games, which is quite phenomenal. If Chahal hadn't bowled that no ball, it would have been 9-1!!!

SA would be happy winning the first two tests and being ahead 2-0 at one time.

Yes, they fail in LOIs but they have a valid excuse as their 2-3 main players weren't part of the team. You can say AB played this and Faf played this and Qdk also played this and all that but they clearly missed their players and never really cared of fighting back after being 0-3.

India obviously will be more satisfied and a great series for them because they dominated odis and t20s and really would have felt that chances were on in tests too.

From identifyig future stars perspective SA did themselves no harm. 3 players alteast they identified. Dala,Klassen, Jonker.

India hands-down. Best indian performance outside subcontinent. Will give confidence for next overseas tours.

I too put my vote for India. If it weren't for the nonsensical picks in the Tests, they had the chance of winning the whole series. Well played. I just hope we replicate a similar result, no chance though.

Fit & Inform Decock, Amla, Faf & Ab would have made series 3-3 atleast.

If we are making up hypotheticals, fit and inform and selected Rahane, Vijay and Bhuvi would have made the test matches 3-0 in India's favour.

When were Rahane, Bhuvi and Vijay injured? They didnt find a place in XI in those respective matches which is captain's fault.

Then India won with their 4 key players and south africa lost without their 4 key players.

With 7 deadwoods India won . That is how you sould see. They just had to dismiss 2 batsmen . ABDV did play, Fauf did play, Rabada did play, Amla did play. Yet they lost all those games. But for rain it would hav e been a white wash. Not sure you followed it. It was not just beating. It was epic thrasihng. Look at the margins of wins. None of their batsmen were able to pick the wrist spinners. THey needed help of rain to take it to them.

I see you are ready with your excuses. However as jnaveen1980 points out, SA also lost when their "stars" played.

RSA. Winning Tests is always the priority:shadab. India did well in the one dayers and T20's so credit to them for that

SA marginal winners of tour... Test series matters more.

But good hiding Ind gave to SA in LOI :ashwin

Mike Haysman, Pommi and Holding tried their best to find positives from mediocre SA from 3rd test onwards. :shh

Rain saved SA from back to back whitewashes :kohli2

India technically walked away happier. They lost the test series but they did way better on the overall tour than any of the previous Indian teams. Even in tests, they made some selection blunders and once they got that right, they won the match.

more like if Iyer didn't drop that Dolly

I would happily forfeit the results in limited overs cricket for a swap with 2-1 test series win. I don’t think the team was that bad, they just lost first two test in a flash before they really got hold of things in South Africa. This was India’s finest chance for a test series win in the nation where they received most humiliation in last. It’s something that should make the Indians feel hurt and empty as they go back carrying two trophies that mean little or nothing at all. Kohli had a disastrous tour as captain.

If you had offered this outcome to India at the start of the tour, they would have taken it. But given what pushovers SA have proved to be, India would be disappointed not to have won the Test series too.

The only sensible post here.

Nobody remembers one day cricket wins, if India had won the test series it would have been talked of for the next century. India had a big chance to do this but blew it with poor captaincy and tactics by the coaching staff.

I'd be delighted if I were an Indian fan. When was the last time an Asian team walked away from a Test series in SA with their izzat intact? Totally dominating them in the LOIs was just the icing on the cake.

India, they could have easily won the test series, but pity that the LOI series were unfair with a more powerful Indian team versus Saffers team weakened by injuries

South Africa, test cricket is everything in bilateral, we did well as such but selection blunders in first two tests made it not be our tour.

Just to further add to my post South Africa should be elated with the result as they managed to beat a superior team in test cricket. They should be ok with the red ball cricket result too as they competed well in T20s; ODI result was inevitable.
Congrats SA. :)

I would have been more unhappy with results reversed. I will take test series win over ODI/T-20.

Majority of indian fans would be happier although logically speaking they shouldn’t be.

Lol...Still see many Pak fans talking about 2-1 ODI series win in SA here in PP.

Now, India annihilated SA by 5-1 it becomes irrelevant. :salute

Most of Ind fans rate test series higher (read comments above) .... still thrashing SA at home is not so easy. :kohli2

India.

They competed in the Tests and won the LOIs quite convincingly.

India wins the tour hands down by all metrics.
SA have been pathetic and deserved to lose against this top quality Indian side.

The test series was closely fought with South Africa playing just marginally better to take it.. rest of the series it was one sided

I lost interest in the tour after the end of the test series.

South Africa were worthy victors, but we did fight them tooth and nail so there are a lot of positives to take.

Team that batted 4th lost in all 3 tests. India just did not prepare enough. They arrived late. Look at Australia they already played a practice game in SA. Even though the conditions in SA are similar to Australian conditions as Smith said, they do have a practice game. No acclimitization. Illogical selection. Backing of wrong players.

India won the tour even though they lost the test series. The humiliating defeats in the the ODI series wont be an easy pill to swallow for the Saffers especially coming on the the back 17 match unbeaten home streak.

Actually India would be very happy with the performance away from home in SA conditions but SA wouldnt also feel dis-heartened because they weren't playing the best XI due to injury issues of some of their top players.

India's achievement is great no doubt but SA won't mind the loss either.

I wouldn't be too pleased if I were SA, sure they won but the matches were pretty tight + they were hammered in the LOIs.

Definitely India, they dominated everything except the tests but remained very competitive and showed the dramatic away bowling performance improvement they need going forward, they're a side that's still learning, from captain to players, and they'll come back stronger. A very positive tour and the LOI domination was just a completely clinic demolition of SA at home, something no one could foresee not too long ago.

Indian bowlers took wickets and did put the opposition in back foot time to time.

That's a scene I never saw since I started watching cricket.

Even with losing test series, I am happy with the way bowling is shaping up.

ODI, T20 don't care either way.

They had three main LOI players missing. Yes, de Kock was out of form but we all know on his day he could win the game single-handedly only.

Also, de Villiers coming back after injury in 4th odi after SA were already 0-3 and unless you are in top rythm and it is a series which won't hurt you, one might not really try to give a fight there. Faf wasn't there after first odi. Then their captain in the series, Aiden Markaram, was just 1 match old when he got the responsibility.

SA would be more than happy to win the test series even before third test started. Meanwhile, SA also invented their own Martin Guptill in limited overs too(yes too early but still..)!

SA, we won the LoI's but this was a our best chance to win a test series in SA yet and Kohli and his lackey blew it.

I think its Even stevens because of test series but if you put a knife to my throat and ask me to name one, i would say India by a whisker.

It is just as hard to beat SA in bilateral ODI series as it is to beat them in Tests ... infact India has drawn a Test Series previously but never came close to winning a ODI series in SA.

Actually India had won a grand sum of 4 ODIs in all their previous tours to SA put together. We won 5 in one tour. Thats remarkable.

Obviously South Africa. It's the Test series that truly matter. ODI and T20 series are for mere entertainment. History remembers a tour by what happened in it's Test series.

All of you are wrong. Cricket was the overall victor :)))

India. They didn't have any practice yet when they adjusted to pitch (3rd test onwards), South Africa were thoroughly destroyed.

India would have won the test series as well if they could get a few practice match.

I think Indian bowlers were the victor. It must have increased their confidence almost taking 10 wickets every innings, be it in test or be it ODIs

SA won the main series so they won the tour. We are not discraced like we usually are on these tours.
Precisely.

South Aftica’s Only priority was the Test series, and they won it inside eight days.

From that point on they saved their best players for the upcoming Australia Tests.

I should know: I’m now at Perth en route to the First Test in Durban.

Let’s be honest: the ODI and T20 series v India were just meaningless Made For Indian TV Garbage.

If India had arrived when they were supposed to, South Africa could have taken the ODI and T20 series seriously. But by arriving so late as to make the limited overs series continue until the First Test with Australia, India ensured that South Africa just put its best players in cotton wool.

Obviously south Africa! Who cares about these meaning less limited overs series.India won due to depleted side in odis

Is du plesis going to to be resting for the 2nd test match as 1st match isn't important? Stop with ** agenda mate.

Guy 'does run vs SL Count? / SA saved players for AUS test series' is back after India completed humiliation of SA LOI teams :ashwin :bhajji

Let's see how much will 'so called rest' help SA in upcoming test series !

Did Ottis Gibson come to Perth airport to tell you this or Faf did?
