Somerset have named a strong side to face Pakistan in the three-day game that starts at the Cooper Associates County Ground tomorrow (Sunday).

The squad contains a strong spine of senior players as well as some of our most talented youngsters and the side will be skippered by Peter Trego.

Two former Academy graduates, 18 year old off spinner Dom Bess and 20 year old batsman Tim Rouse, have been rewarded for their impressive performances for the Second XI by a call up to the squad.

Ahead of the game Somerset Director of Cricket Matt Maynard said: “Both Dom and Tim have Somerset Scholarship contracts and have been doing well playing for the Second XI. Tim scored 175 against Gloucestershire earlier this week as well as performing well for his WEPL club Bath CCC and I always take note of that, so he deserves his chance in the middle order.

“Dom is a real fighter and is a sort of Gareth Batty type of character. He is snappy, is at you all the time and has got some really good skills. We supported him during the winter at the Darren Lehmann Academy at Adelaide and the trip has done him a lot of good. His performances for the Seconds this year have been tremendous and he is on the radar for England Under 19s.

“These are two local lads who have come through the Academy, done well for the Seconds and now have their opportunity to play against the tourists. I know just how much our supporters love to see the local boys do well, which is such an important part of this Club.”

Somerset will also be giving a debut to new signing Paul van Meekeren, a 23 year old paceman who has played in two ODI’s for the Netherlands.

Matt said: “Paul is a player that we have been monitoring for a little while. We have trialed a few bowlers this summer but Paul has really been the standout and he got a five-fer in the Second XI game against Kent recently.

“Both Chris Rogers and Marcus Trescothick were playing in that game and they both spoke highly of his attributes. I got to see him at Taunton Vale earlier this week and he impressed me so he has agreed a short term contract with us until the end of the season. I know that we beat off opposition from other counties and he has got a real opportunity in this game to show what he is capable of. He is six feet four, gets good bounce and predominantly swings the ball away from the right hander. I know that Jason Kerr is excited about him as a prospect, but he still has a lot of work to do, but hopefully he will have a good career here.”

Talking about the overall make up of the squad Matt said: “We have got some experienced players in the squad like Marcus, James Hildreth, Peter Trego, Tim Groenewald and Tom Abell.”

The DOC added: “This is a real opportunity for the young players to show their capability because although there are no points at stake, there is a lot at stake in terms of representing Somerset County Cricket Club against an international touring side and the pride that goes with that.”

The full Somerset squad is: Marcus Trescothick, Tom Abell, Adam Hose, James Hildreth, Tim Rouse, Pete Trego (c), Roelof van der Merwe, Ryan Davies (wk), Josh Davey, Dom Bess, Tim Groenewald, Paul van Meekeren and Jack Leach.

Pak players need to show good and positive attitude and strong character from day one of the series

Not being telecast but we can listen to commentary on BBC radio 5 live extra.

Back to the old days of my school when we used to bring radios in class to listen to cricket :)

Is there a live telecast on sky sports or others? Surely there gotto be a channel somewhere telecasting this match :)

Just did a little research on the matter, BBC radio is covering the event starting in the next couple of hours.

BBC Radio - 5 Live Sports Extra (Link)

Will we have a set 11 or can whole squad play?

Why do people think a tour match would be televised ?

Its on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra but the coverage will be interrupted by Wimbledon and the women's cricket match.

For full uninterrupted coverage - best bet is BBC Radio Somerset or Radio Bristol - http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/live/cricket/36672652

Which one has the best commentators out of the 3?

Radio 5 Live Extra commentators will probably be a feed of the Somerset or Bristol commentary.

Don't know much about the commentators on those stations but BBC cricket coverage is generally very good.

Marcus Trescothick should be a walking wicket.

Trescothicks actually been churning out runs fairly consistently for Somerset since his enforced retirenent bar a poor season or 2.

Taunton is generally one of the flattest wickets in the country with one of the shortest boundaries so for the Pakistanis batsmen sake it would probably be more beneficial if theyve prepped a slightly more seam friendly pitch than usual for this game.

Hafeez is easily the most complete opener in Pakistan right now. If only he had played in place of Shehzad in the 2015 world cup

I think we will find out how good he is after the end of this tour .
I am hoping he does well

Hell no. Not in England. Sohail has to play over him

The thing with Khan is he doesn't give out loose balls every over, he will constantly keep the pressure on England's Batsmen which could provide loads of wickets for Amir and Yasir.
Sohail is a good new ball bowler but he tends to bowl 1/2 loose deliveries every over or so, Rahat has the same problem.

You make a good point

Imran's bowling style is of no use in England and he doesn't have the pace to make up for it either. He will be murdered in England, Sohail is a far better bet.

Listening the commentary on BBC. Hafeez is struggling on the off side channel. Not playing with much confidence.

Hafeez seems to be struggling going by the commentary

Sounds like he's trying too hard to avoid playing the swinging ball. He needs to be smart, he won't survive if he goes into a complete shell. He must play positively while respecting the good balls.

First boundary for Hafeez. Hope it gives him confidence since his game is built on that.

Edit : My bad that is Shan. Couldve sworn cricinfo made an error and showed Hafeez.

Wow, so seems there is a set playing XI, then.

Surprised to see no Wahab or Imran.

Hopefully all those who didn't get this game get the nod for the next one.

Imran Khan Jr is the only one that can swing the new ball along with Sohail Khan.

Imran Khan only has reverse swing up his sleeve, and if Pakistan need a reverse swing bowler in England then they already have Wahab Riaz. No need for mediocre 125kph trundlers who can't swing the ball.

That was Shan Masood. Hafeez still quite edgy..

Yeah I was happy to see Arthur rate Sohail and not him. He is a good option in UAE and thats it

Suprised wahab is not in the team that could be the Arthur affect.

Also guys remember Hafeez hasn't played a lot of cricket for months so he's bound to be a bit rusty.

It's an amazing day, 3 different pak cricket teams playing in england at the same time, has it ever happened before?

Cautious stuff from the Pakistan openers so far.

Hafeez has survived a very good lbw shout.

Six from Hafeez. First bad ball and Hafeez gives it the treatment.
