Sourav Ganguly appointed BCCI President

Well some people like to live in their own lalaland. So, all is well for them. Including indian economy. Sab changa si. DDCA is absolutely corruption free as much as British built railways for the welfare of Indian public!

Rather than ranting, why dont you tell, which political party siphoned off money from DDCA and how?

Read the article. Are you saying Caravan fabricated the court orders and agency violations?

Kejriwal must have apologized for other reasons, maybe skeletons in his own closet.. who knows.

Read the court orders. When did they come and for what reasons. Who was DDCA president then.

Sourav Ganguly becoming the BCCI president is good news for world cricket, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani feels.

“He (Ganguly) has been involved with Bengal cricket for some time now. And he is a highly respected player, very good cricket mind. So it can only be good for cricket, not only for India but for world cricket to have a voice of his calibre in the ICC,” Mani told The Indian Express.

Asked if the PCB has any expectations from the BCCI, with the former India captain taking charge, he said: “No. It’s for the BCCI what they want to do. Sourav has already said very clearly that this is a decision that the Indian government seems to control. It’s very unfortunate for me that the government interferes in sports like this. But we have to respect that, as that’s what the BCCI wants. We do not have that sort of political interference in Pakistan.”

India-Pakistan bilateral cricket ties are frozen for over six years now. The last time a bilateral series took place was in 2012-13, when Pakistan crossed the border to play two T20 Internationals and three ODIs.

On Thursday, Ganguly addressed the issue of India-Pakistan bilateral cricket, saying it is subject to approval from the Prime Ministers of both countries. “Of course we have (to take permission), because international exposure (tours) is all through governments. So we don’t have an answer to that question,” Ganguly had said.

Despite cross-border tension and the often strained political ties, the BCCI and PCB have shared a good rapport over the years. That, however, got affected after Committee of Administrators (CoA) head Vinod Rai called for Pakistan’s isolation in world cricket in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack. But the arch rivals met in a World Cup group game in Manchester that India won comfortably.

Sourav Ganguly, one of India's most successful cricket captains, takes over as president of the country's cricket board on Wednesday, kicking off a new chapter in its history, writes the BBC's Vikas Pandey in Delhi.

Cricket is a religion in India and cricketers are often treated as gods.

And then there are those who control the gods: officials of the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It's one of the richest sports bodies in the world and wields commanding influence in international cricketing matters - which explains why the BCCI has been run by politicians and powerful businessmen for most parts of its existence.

Being in the BCCI means controlling a game that is passionately followed by millions of Indians. It also guarantees a constant media spotlight and a controlling stake in India's sporting future, which is very much dominated by cricket.

Ganguly's election follows a significant intervention by the Supreme Court into cricket administration in 2017.

It ordered all politicians, including the current junior finance minister Anurag Thakur, to step down and appointed a committee of administrators to run and reform the BCCI.

The decision came after allegations of corruption and spot-fixing in the BCCI-run Indian Premier League T20 tournament.

New innings
Ganguly's election is turning a new leaf in Indian cricket. And fans have high hopes from him because of his success as a player and captain.

The former captain is largely credited with heralding a new era in Indian cricket and he is no stranger to challenges.

He took over the captaincy at the turn of the century under trying circumstances. People's faith in cricket was at an all-time low after several senior players were expelled from the team over match-fixing allegations.

There were protests across the country and many Indians no longer wanted to watch cricket. His team was also fairly inexperienced.

But Ganguly turned this weakness into his strength.

He nurtured and believed in young players, he told them to reply to sledging with more sledging, and not back down against pressure tactics from their opponents.

In a significant departure from the usual image of the mild-mannered Indian cricketer, he gave freedom to teammates to be aggressive on the field.

The strategy paid off and India started winning both at home and abroad.

And the fact that he always led from the front helped him earn the respect of his teammates. The "fab five" - which included him, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid - dominated Indian batting for almost a decade.

Then came the low point: he had a very public fallout with coach Greg Chappell, the man he had brought from Australia to help him run the team. Ganguly was first stripped off his captaincy and later dropped from the team.

But - remarkably - he bounced back, playing in domestic tournaments and scoring heavily, forcing the selectors to pick him again for the national side. He eventually retired in 2008.

They believe that a legendary cricketer running the board is good news for the game. And it certainly is.

But can he recreate the same magic as a cricket administrator?

He is not known to mince words and that was evident when reporters recently asked him to assess the current team's performance.

While praising their winning streak in bilateral series, he pointed out that the team, led by captain Virat Kohli, had failed to win big tournaments.

"I think it's [India's performance abroad] satisfactory and we have a very good side. My only thing is that we need to win big tournaments. I'm not saying they will win every time. It's not possible. But they have gone through seven big tournaments without winning one; they are a much better side than that," he said.

Kohli or coach Ravi Shastri haven't responded to the statement.

So far, Kohli and Shastri have run the team with complete authority and reports say they dominate the team selection committee's meetings and have a final say on who gets picked. When former coach Anil Kumble stepped down, there was speculation that it was because Kohli didn't agree with his decisions. Shastri and Ganguly too have publicly disagreed on many issues in the past.

It will be interesting to see how the captain and the coach work with the new president.

Ganguly is also likely to face interference from politicians.

Behind the euphoria of his election lies another story - the backdoor re-entry of politicians in the BCCI.

Reports suggest that Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah orchestrated his appointment - the two met before Ganguly filed his nomination - although both have denied the meeting had anything to do with his candidature.

Besides Ganguly, the board is expected to be made up of Jay Shah, the home minister's son who is set to be elected as the new secretary, and Arun Dhumal, brother of Mr Thakur who is expected to be the new treasurer.

Ganguly's immediate challenge will be to make people believe that cricket in India will continue to be run without political interference.

And he doesn't have much time as his tenure is only for 10 months. The new BCCI rule bars anyone from serving in the board or its state units for more than six years on the trot. Ganguly has already done more than five years in the Cricket Association of Bengal.

So can he deliver? We will have to just watch the next 10 months. The past tells us it's a good idea to be ready for surprises when Ganguly is at the helm.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has been formally elected as the 39th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, after a general body meeting on Wednesday, 23 October.

Ganguly served as the Cricket of Bengal President from 2015, before becoming the first cricketer in 65 years to take charge as BCCI President after Maharaja of Vizianagaram in 1954.

"I congratulated him. It’s great that he has become BCCI president," said India skipper Virat Kohli on Ganguly's appointment, after his side completed a 3-0 sweep over South Africa on Tuesday.

Ganguly, who served as national captain between 2000 and 2005, is considered one of the most successful skippers in the history of Indian cricket. He led them to victory in the 2002 Natwest Trophy and to the final of the 2003 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. He also captained them to many memorable performances in overseas Tests, including victories against England in Leeds in 2002, Australia in Adelaide in 2003 and Pakistan in Multan in 2004.

Wriddhiman Saha, who played under Ganguly for Bengal, said that his appointment as the BCCI President will "immensely benefit" the national side. "He is aware of players' demands and knows what goes on between them. It will be an added plus to the team and individual players," the wicket-keeper batsman had said last week.

"I hope players will immensely benefit after Dada (Ganguly) takes up the new role, especially under the circumstances. He has represented the country for a long time and then went on to dominate Indian cricket first as a player then captain. He can bring about a lot of improvements as he knows the game inside out. If something is not happening, Dadi can make it happen."

Never thought I'd see this day. Ganguly, you too :ssmith

BJP fans have nowhere to hide. But they'll pretend none of this exists. Or maybe resort to the whataboutery they never tire of.

Ganguly is standing even when he is the president of BCCI and Amit Shah's son is sitting who is the secretary of BCCI. pillionrider is seeing this as a grip of BJP on BCCI.

I think you are reading too much into it.
Ganguly is too strong a character to be manipulated by the likes of Shah. He will never take it lying down.

Will the Ganguly-Dravid partnership transform NCA?

Sourav Ganguly’s plan: NCA to be Centre of Excellence

The long-time former India teammates discussed their plans for the academy with Ganguly also giving his inputs.

The former India skipper, who took over the BCCI's reins last week, also visited the proposed land where the new NCA facility is supposed to come up.

BCCI had signed a 25-acre deal with the Karnataka government in May and now it has got an additional 15 acres of land from the government for setting up the Centre of Excellence near the Bengaluru international airport.

The BCCI is looking forward to converting the National Cricket Academy (NCA) into a Centre of Excellence — a state-of-the-art facility, designated to be a finishing school for leading young talents. It is learnt that the item is on the agenda, when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly meets NCA director Rahul Dravid and the Academy’s chief operating officer (COO) Tufan Ghosh in Bangalore on Wednesday. BCCI secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal are expected to be present as well.

The two former Indian cricketers reviewed a road map to take the academy to a new level. Ganguly, along with NCA officials, also visited the proposed land for building a new NCA facility in Bangalore. The cricket governing body has got an additional 15 acres of land from the Karnataka government for setting up the Centre of Excellence near the international airport here.

The NCA was established in 2000 to nurture top young talents, with the potential to represent India in the future. Of late, though, it has become basically a rehab centre for the injured national team and India A team cricketers. Now that Ganguly has taken charge of the BCCI, former greats like VVS Laxman are expecting an overhaul. During Ganguly’s felicitation at Eden Gardens last week, Laxman had urged that the NCA be transformed into a Centre of Excellence.

Sourav Ganguly - True Leader.

Every time he stepped into a role, he redefined it and handed over to the next gen.

Right as a player, Captain and now as the Top most administrator, he has made his presence felt yet again.

It must be a record of sorts to have got such an important milestone going after all the time it was lying in the cold storage. He convinced everyone, got the clearances and went ahead in less than a month!

And what a fantastic way to mark the occasion! He moved heaven and earth to get stalwarts, great sportspersons apart from just cricket and make it a memorable evening for the First ever Pink Ball Day & Night Test match in India.

For a change, he made BCCI's priority Cricket rather than just Politics.

The crowd was great and Test match looked fascinating under the lights!!!

Way to go Dada!!! Some Hate you, Many Love you, But no one ignores you...Playing or Retired!

Congratulations to you for making this Historic Occasion a reality and Wishing many more wonderful things to happen in Indian Cricket!

He's had a phenomenal start to his Presidency at BCCI.

The pink test match has been organized in a wonderful way.

This guy is a born leader.

Keeps growing on me. Now i am starting to respect his captaincy reign even more.

Sourav Ganguly confirms Asia XI vs World XI match at Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in 2020

Highlights:
Sardar Patel Stadium set to be the largest cricket stadium in the world with a massive capacity of 1.10 lakh.

Built at cost of 700 crores INR.

The capacity of the stadium is higher than the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, which can accommodate around 1,00,024 spectators.

The previous stadium at Motera, which had the capacity of 54,000 was demolished in order to accommodate the new stadium. Built across 64 acres, the Sardar Patel Stadium will boast many distinctive features.

Tbf it's not a great era to have an Asia XI vs Row Match because barring India rest of Asia lacks star power unlike in 1990s and 2000s when even India struggled to make 4 entries in that line up.

India vs ROW sounds a lot more fun

India vs World XI would've been a lot more fun. There are no star players in the other Asian teams that people care for. Sri Lanka and Pakistan are a shell of what they used to be.

Back in the day if i even saw 3 Indians on the sheet i would be hooked to my TV screen knowing sheer combined star power of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Sourav Ganguly reveals 'Super Series' plan with England and Australia.

"Australia, England, India and another top team will feature in the Super Series, which begins in 2021, and the first edition of the tournament will be played in India," Ganguly was quoted as saying by Kolkata-based newspapers at an event organised by a fantasy cricket app over the weekend. This was soon after he had returned from a trip the UK along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal to meet ECB officials.

India, England and Australia may overturn the delicately balanced global cricket calendar and play an annual limited-overs tournament among themselves - with one other nation - from 2021 onwards, according to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Making all the noises that you'd expect a Srinivasan stooge to make. The ICC have no chance to retaliate, which is bad news for international cricket. It was always bound to happen given that the ICC is a basketcase of an organization.

What did he do?

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is deeply saddened and intimidated by the devastation caused because of the COVID-19 pandemic and has equated the unprecedented crisis to playing a Test match on a dangerous wicket.

The decorated former player opened up on life under lockdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic that has claimed over 2.40 lakh lives across the world while infecting more than 34 lakh people.

“This situation is a Test match on a very dangerous wicket. The ball is seaming and spinning as well - the batsman has very little margin of error,” Ganguly said while speaking on ‘100 Hours 100 Stars’, an initiative started by Fever Network.

“So, the batsman has to score runs and keep his wicket safe with this little margin of error, and win this Test match,” he added.

A winner of innumerable fierce battles during his playing days when there was no dearth of fearsome fast bowlers and quality spinners, Ganguly was tempted to draw a parallel between the tough moments in the sport and the health crisis.

“This is very difficult, but we hope that we will win this match together,” he added.

Ganguly expressed his sadness at the number of lives lost in the pandemic and the irreparable damage that it has caused.

Data: Highs and lows of Ranji Trophy 2019-20

“I am really upset seeing the current situation, because so many people are suffering outside. We are still struggling to understand how to stop this pandemic,” he said.

“This atmosphere all over the world has really bothered me. We don’t know how, when and where it came from - we all were unprepared for this,” he added.

Not just upset, Ganguly conceded he cannot help feeling a big scared of what’s unfolding because of the disease.

“People are being affected by this so much. There have been so many deaths. This situation upsets me, and I also feel scared,” he said.

Big step forward for women’s cricket

“People come to my house to deliver groceries, food, so I feel a little scared as well. So it’s a mixed feeling. I just want this to end as quickly as possible,” he added,

He said cricket has taught him to face tough situations in life and the importance of staying alert at all times.

Asked how he keeps himself positive, the former captain said: “Cricket has taught me a lot. I faced real life, high-pressure situations. You have to make runs and there is just one ball left.

“If you make one wrong move, one wrong footwork, you will not get another chance. These kind of situations make you alert and aware about real life situations,” he said.

The BCCI chief, though, also added that he is getting to spend a lot of time with his family after a long time.

“It’s been a month into the lockdown. I didn’t mind it earlier. Earlier, I wouldn’t get time at home like this. My lifestyle involved travelling for work everyday.

“For the past 30-32 days, I have been at home with my family, spending time with my wife, daughter, my mother and my brother.

“I have got a time like this after long, so I am enjoying myself,” he said.

Former England skipper David Gower feels Sourav Ganguly has the right “political skills” to lead the ICC one day and he has already displayed that as BCCI president, which is a “far tougher job”. The elegant left-hander is very impressed with Ganguly’s leadership abilities and believes that he has what it takes to head the global body in the future. “One thing I have learnt over the years is that if you are going to run BCCI, you need to be many, many things. Having a reputation like he (Ganguly) has is a very good start, but you need to be a very deft politician. “You need to have control of a million different things,” Gower said ahead of “Q20”, a unique chat show for the fans presented by ‘GloFans’.

Gower reckons being president of the BCCI is the toughest job imaginable in world cricket. “And of course, you need to be responsible for a game that is followed by, I mean, should we say a billion people here in India,” he said.

“We all know about the immense following for cricket in India. So it is indeed a wonderful thing to behold. Sourav has the toughest task imaginable in charge of BCCI, but so far I would say the signs are very good. “He has listened, given his own opinion and has pulled strings gently,” he said. Political skills are a must in administration and that’s where Gower finds his fellow left-hander ticking all the boxes.

“He is a very, very good man and has those political skills. He has the right attitude and can keep things together and will do good job. And if you do a good job as BCCI chief in the future, who knows? “But I would actually say the more important job, to be honest, is running BCCI. Being head of ICC is an honour, there is a lot that can be done by ICC, but actually look at the rankings, look at where the power is heading up. BCCI is definitely the bigger job,” he said.

On the cricketing front, Gower believes World Test Championship has given the format much-needed context. “The idea of this World Test Championship has come about for one very simple reason that people are worried about the survival of Tests. Back in the seventies, eighties, I don’t think we needed context to be fair. “Test cricket was very much more obviously the most important format and if there was anything to be judged by, it was the performances in Test matches both as an individual and as a team.”

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is arguably one of the greatest left-handers India have ever produced. His fluent strokes through off the side and lofted shots against the spinners were enough to give headaches to any opposition captain, particularly in limited-overs cricket. But Ganguly had his shortcomings too. That the current BCCI president was uncomfortable against short-pitched deliveries aimed at his body was not an unknown fact. Fast bowlers like Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, Shaun Pollock, Glenn McGrath, Mervyn Dillon gave a hard time to the left-hander in the early 2000s. But according to former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar, Ganguly was the bravest batsman he ever bowled to.

Akhtar, who was widely regarded as the fastest bowler in the late 90s and early 2000s, had some memorable duels with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Jacques Kallis, and Kevin Pietersen, singled out Ganguly for high-praise.

Akhtar, who represented Pakistan in 46 Tests, 163 ODIs, and 15 T20Is picking up 178, 247, and 19 wickets respectively, said Ganguly was the only opener who could stand up to him with the new ball.

“People used to say that he was scared to face fast bowling, he was afraid to face me. I think all of that was rubbish. Sourav Ganguly was the bravest batsman, the only opener who could face me with the new ball,” said Akhtar in an interview with Helo app.

Akhtar agreed that Ganguly had limited strokes when the ball was aimed at his body but the former fast bowler said, the left-hander never backed away.

“He knew, he didn’t have the shots, I also targeted him by bowling at his chest but he never backed away, and still scored runs that are what I call bravery,” said Akhtar.

Ganguly, one of India’s most successful captains, hanged his boot in 2008 after playing 113 Tests, 311 ODIs, scoring 7212 and 11363 runs respectively. Ganguly also had 23 ODI hundreds to his name which is the third most by an Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

Akhtar also praised Ganguly as the best Indian captain he has played against.

“If I talk about India, then it will be Sourav Ganguly. India haven’t produced a better captain than him. Dhoni is very good, he’s a superb captain but when you talk about team building then Ganguly did a great job,” said Akhtar.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday went into home quarantine after his elder brother and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Snehasish Ganguly tested positive for Covid-19.

Snehasish, a former Bengal first-class player, has been admitted to the Belle Vue hospital in Kolkata after his Covid report came positive.

“He was suffering from fever for the last few days and his test report came positive today. He’s been admitted to Belle Vue Hospital,” a CAB official told PTI.

“The reports arrived late in the evening. As per health protocols, even Sourav will have to be in home quarantine for a stipulated period,” a source close to the BCCI President added.

Snehasish had shifted to their ancestral house, where Sourav is based, in Behala after his wife and in-laws at his Mominpur residence tested positive for the dreaded virus.

The former India captain was, however, unavailable for a comment on the development.

Recently, during an interview to India Today, Sourav had spoken about how life around him has changed, making people more vulnerable.

“My brother visits our factories everyday and he is more at risk,” the former batting star had said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear after two weeks a bunch of petitions, including one filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for an amendment in its Constitution which may decide the tenures of its president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.

BCCI has urged the court to revise a rule in its new Constitution which mandates that administrators have to go through a three-year cooling-off period after six successive years in the BCCI or any state association.

The cooling-off was a major recommendation by the Justice R.M. Lodha Committee to reform cricket administration in the country.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde and L. Nageswara Rao said the court cannot hear the applications next week as it would be busy with the Maratha reservations case, which would be heard on a day-to-day basis.

The BCCI application was not listed for hearing but was mentioned. The CJI said the separate applications by the Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh cricket association would also be heard in the next hearing scheduled after a fortnight.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) had also filed an interlocutory application in the apex court on July 4, requesting to be excused of nominating a representative to apex council of the BCCI and state associations.

If the court recuses CAG from the apex council, it will result in modifying the entire apex council structure. At the moment, the BCCI apex council consists of nine members: five office-bearers, a councillor, a male and female cricketer representative each and the CAG nominee.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has tested negative for COVID-19 after he gave his samples as a precautionary measure.

The former India captain has been in home quarantine for more than a week after his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly had tested positive for coronavirus.

“He (Ganguly) is living with his ailing mother and family, so as a precautionary measure he took the test voluntarily and the report came negative on Friday evening,” a source close to the BCCI president told PTI.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) secretary Snehasish is recovering well and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days.

“He is doing fine and also handling his office work from the hospital through virtual meetings. We expect him to be released in a couple of days,” the source added.

Snehasish’s family -- wife, mother-in-law, father-in-law along with their domestic help -- had tested positive for COVID-19 on June 20 at their Mominpur residence.

Since then, the elder Ganguly had shifted to their ancestral house in Behala where the BCCI President is based.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that he wishes to see Sourav Ganguly continue as the BCCI president until the 2023 World Cup. Ganguly was appointed the president of the BCCI in October last year for a period of nine months but the cooling off period clause in the new BCCI constitution makes in mandatory for board officials to step down after six years in office.

Ganguly’s tenure ends on July 26. That’s when he completes six years in total as a BCCI office-bearer and an office-bearer of Cricket Association of Bengal. Ideally, he has to take a cooling-off break of three years. However, Aditya Verma – the original petitioner in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, which led to the apex court forming the Lodha Panel, which recommended sweeping constitutional reforms – on Tuesday said his lawyers won’t oppose a cooling-off period waiver for BCCI president Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah when the matter is heard in the Supreme Court, given the impact he’s made since being elected to run the board.

“The Supreme Court of India’s decision to postpone the hearing of several applications by the BCCI and some of its affiliates has also left Indian cricket in limbo. Sure, there are many more important cases than cricket before the highest court in the land but Indian cricket lovers are anxiously awaiting the decision,” Gavaskar wrote on his column for Mid-Day on Sunday.

“Personally, I would love to see Sourav and his team carry on till the end of the 2023 World Cup in India but let’s see what the court decides. Just like Sourav lifted the Indian team after the early murky times and restored the faith of the Indian cricket lovers, so also he and his team look capable of doing that with the BCCI administration.”

Under Ganguly’s helm, India played their first day-night Test last year against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens and has implemented productive changes in the Indian cricket system, including handing Rahul Dravid a larger role as head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy. Besides wanting Ganguly to continue, Gavaskar wishes the BCCI would implement a no-limit policy in terms of aiding former players with medical expenses.

“The cost of some of these treatments is multi times more than the medical assistance limit currently for ex-cricketers who played for peanuts and do not even have a fraction of the money the current lot has. So, each case should be treated separately and if it is a very serious medical problem then there should be no limit for the medical assistance from the BCCI,” Gavaskar said.

From his ugly spat with Greg Chappell to his constant run-ins with India's head coach Ravi Shastri, Sourav Ganguly is no stranger to controversies. Probably one of India's most cerebral and aggressive captains, Ganguly is seen as the man who gave Indian cricket a clean and youthful image. But today, Ganguly is making news for all the wrong reasons.

As a captain or administrator, Ganguly was always known for his outspoken ways. The man who once looked the aggressive Australian cricketers in the eye and even made Steve Waugh wait at the toss, is now a completely subdued man and confused too as his 'dadagiri' in cricket seems to have taken a back seat.

His short tenure as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India ended on Monday and according to the rule book, Ganguly's role as a cricket administrator will now enter the cold storage for three years.

Ganguly was elected as BCCI president in October 2019 fully aware that he had to undertake a three-year cooling off for having served for six years on-the-trot as an administrator in either a state association, Board or a combination of the two.

Will he, won't he?

Of course, Ganguly can remain in cricket administration if the BCCI nominates him for the post of the ICC chairmanship which lies vacant now. But Ganguly will hate a contest especially when Colin Graves of England looks a front-runner.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has appealed to the Supreme Court to waive off the three-year cooling period on Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, whose tenure officially ended in May first week. The hearing is on August 17.

The next 20 days will see Ganguly in no-man's land.

If Ganguly takes part in BCCI matters, like Home Minister Amit's Shah's son Jay Shah has been doing, it can be considered as contempt of court because the constitution leaves little scope for any doubt in its August 2018 order on the tenure of officials.

"The rules also stipulate that no one be permitted to ‘circumvent’ the mandatory provisions of “cooling off” or “complete ouster after 9 years”. Yes, desired and favourable opinions could be obtained from many, but such “obtained opinions” are nothing but circumvention and contrary to basic fundamental objectives of changes so directed by the Supreme Court in series of decisions," explained UN Banerjee, the BCCI's former legal head.

It is unthinkable that Ganguly will break the rules and afford to tarnish his public image.

"Since he hasn't quit as yet, it seems he wants to continue as a cricket administrator. BCCI doesn't have a plan B and no one is asking questions what are the next steps if the apex court refuses to amend the rules," said a BCCI insider.

Brijesh Patel in the forefront

With BCCI hell-bent on hosting the IPL 2020 in UAE, it is understood that both Ganguly and Shah have been quietly working under the radar to negotiate with the main stakeholders.

Brijesh Patel, who is the chairman of the IPL Governing Council, has been doing all the talking with the media. He was the one who confirmed the September 19-November 8 window for IPL and even said that the BCCI has sent an acceptance letter to the Emirates Cricket Board to host the IPL in UAE.

Patel's emergence as the official 'spokesman' of the BCCI clearly shows that he is fronting for both Ganguly and Shah who are not sure of their BCCI future. This is a situation that at least Ganguly could have avoided.

Can Brijesh Patel become the next BCCI president?

Quite possible. Patel can be elected president in the next 45 days if the BCCI plays by the rule book.

In the original scheme of things, it was the former Indian batsman from Karnataka who was to become the BCCI chief but some senior BJP leaders scripted a coup of sorts for Ganguly. Patel was then left to head the IPL Governing Council, a side dish but no less crucial for the BCCI in terms of revenue generation.

Ganguly's dramatic appointment as BCCI president and his apparent links with top BJP leaders was seen in the light of the Prince of Calcutta representing the saffron party in its attempt to usurp Trinamool Congress in Bengal's Assembly elections in 2021. Ganguly denied this in an interview with Outlook.

In March 2014, when the Supreme Court ended N. Srinivasan's innings as BCCI president, Sunil Gavaskar and Shivlal Yadav were asked by the judges to run the Board as interim presidents. History can repeat itself after six years.

India''s home series against England will be up for discussion alongside the scheduling of the upcoming tour of Australia and the domestic season when the BCCI''s apex council holds an online meeting on October 17.

Board president Sourav Ganguly had said that the BCCI will do all it can to ensure that the home series against England remains in the country and domestic tournaments kick off at some point despite the fluid COVID-19 situation.

India''s COVID-19 case load is nearing 70 lakh and the death toll has surged beyond 1 lakh.

England is scheduled to tour India next year between January and March for five Tests, three ODIs and three T20 Internationals.

In view of the rising COVID cases in India, the UAE, which is currently hosting the IPL, had emerged as an alternative for the home series against England.

However, in the event India is able to host the England team, Mumbai could be the best option to create a bubble with three international venues - Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India and DY Patil Stadium.

The state-of-the-art infrastructure at the new Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad is also an alternative the Board would like to explore.

As far as the domestic circuit is concerned, the BCCI had initially planned to start it with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy from November 19, but there remains doubts due to the situation arising out of the pandemic.

Quite a few factors would have to be taken into consideration before going ahead with plans to start what could be a curtailed domestic season.

Ganguly seems to be in hot water at the upcoming BCCI AGM due to other members raising the issue of blatant conflicts of interest while he occupies the role of board president.

Turns out he has signed up as salesman for multiple brands that are in direct competition with the BCCI's own sponsors.

Classic disregard for the rules in keeping with the traditions of the office. Ever the politician, expect him to wriggle out of any scrutiny unscathed.

Ganguly hospitalized again due to chest pain. Hope he gets well soon.

The 'Prince of Kolkata' has turned a year older on Thursday. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly celebrates his 49th birthday today. He was, undoubtedly, one of the best the country ever produced. The current BCCI president scored 11363 ODI runs with 22 hundreds. In Tests, he amassed 7212 runs in 113 games. From a fearless approach with the bat and as captain to showing belief and injecting life into his team during tough situations, 'Dada' truly was gifted.

Here are five decisions made by Sourav Ganguly as captain that changed Indian cricket forever:

Ganguly sends VVS Laxman at No.3 in Kolkata in 2001 against Australia.

A part of Sourav Ganguly's strength as a captain was him trusting his instincts. During the famous Kolkata Test against Australia in 2001, Laxman was the only batsman who looked comfortable. As India were asked to follow on on Day 3, Ganguly sprung up a surprise as he promoted Laxman ahead of Dravid and the rest is history. Both Laxman and Dravid batted through the day, with the former scoring 281 to set up an unlikely win for the hosts. On Day 5, the rest of the job was done by spinner Harbhajan Singh. India, with that famous triumph, snapped Australia’s 16-match winning streak and won the series 2-1 after winning the final Test in Chennai.

Turning Virender Sehwag into an opener

Virender Sehwag did not start out as an opener. He was a middle-order batsman and when he smashed a century against South Africa on Test debut, he had batted at No.6. However, Ganguly's penchant for seeing the unusual got him thinking again, and eventually, he asked the right-hander to open the innings. The results thereafter proved that Ganguly had indeed struck gold. With an average close to 50 and two triple tons to his name, Sehwag became one of India’s most successful Test openers and contributed to many Indian victories, especially overseas.

Convincing Dravid to keep wickets.

For the majority of his career, 'Dada' did not have MS Dhoni at his disposal. Ganguly's quest for finding a regular wicketkeeper, however, finally ended when he asked Rahul Dravid to don the wicketkeeping gloves to increase the balance of the side. Dravid was initially reluctant but he soon grew into the role by obeying his skipper's wish and ended up becoming a reliable figure at the back. Not only did Ganguly find the right man for the job but he also played an extra batsman between 2002 and 2004. Dravid was pushed to No.5 and he ended up playing some of his best ODI knocks in that position

Another masterstroke that Ganguly played was picking a young MS Dhoni into the national side after just one successful India A series in Kenya. The selection surprised everyone but that wasn't the end of out-of-nowhere decisions. When Dhoni failed to click with the bat initially, Ganguly decided to promote the Jharkhand-born batsman at No.3. Dhoni hammered 148 during an ODI in 2005 against Pakistan and Vizag and since then, he looked onward and upward.

Injecting self-belief into youngsters and team, making them believe they could win abroad

The likes of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, MS Dhoni – all became players they did under Ganguly’s leadership. Ganguly's grit and determination is something that is still talked about to date. He built the team from scratch, elevating it level it should have been at originally but wasn't due to the 2000 match-fixing scandals. Ganguly injected self-belief into the team and convinced them that they could win anywhere. Ganguly’s overseas record of 11 away wins in 28 Tests – the second-best after Virat Kohli – bears testament to the progress the country made under him.

The renaissance man for Indian cricket. Happy bday Dada!

Finally, Dada has agreed. Sourav Ganguly has said ‘yes’ to shoot his biopic. The former Indian captain’s biopic will be a big budget Bollywood film. According to sources, the biopic is being made under a big banner-production house with a budget of around Rs 200 to Rs.250 crore being earmarked for the film.

Yashpal Sharma, One of 1983 World Cup Heroes, Dies Aged 66

“Yes, I have agreed to the biopic. It will be in Hindi but it is not possible to say the name of the director now. It will take a few more days for arranging everything," Ganguly told News18.

Sources say that the script is currently being written. The production house has had multiple meetings with Sourav Ganguly.

But who will play the role of Ganguly? The actor is almost finalised; Ranbir Kapoor is the ‘hot choice’ to play the role of Dada.

Ganguly himself has mentioned Ranbir’s name but there are two more actors on the list as well. The entire journey of Sourav Ganguly - till he becomes BCCI president - will be captured in the biopic. There’s no clarity yet on when the movie will be released.

Ganguly’s will be the latest biopic on cricketers; MS Dhoni’s biopic was a super hit, while former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin had his too. There was also a documentary movie on Sachin Tendulkar.

Currently, a movie is being made about India’s 1983 World Cup victory, where Ranveer Singh is playing the role of former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev. Work is also underway on biopics of Indian women cricketers like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami.

News of Ganguly’s biopic has been published in various media many times before. However, Ganguly has often denied such reports. But this time, Ganguly himself confirmed that the work on his biopic is going on. Shooting of the film will start after the pre-production work is completed. Bulk of the details is being kept confidential. Last year, reports of a possible biopic of Sourav Ganguly, with actor Hrithik Roshan playing his onscreen persona, flooded social media. Neither the former cricketer nor Hrithik had responded to the speculation.

BCCI Chair Sourav Ganguly has been appointed to the position of Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee after Anil Kumble stepped down having served the maximum of three, three-year terms.

ICC Chair Greg Barclay said: “I am delighted to welcome Sourav to the position of Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee. His experience as one of the world’s best players and latterly as an administrator will help us shape our cricketing decisions moving forward. I would also like to thank Anil for his outstanding leadership over the last nine years which has included improving the international game through more regular and consistent application of DRS and a robust process for addressing suspect bowling actions.”

The Board also approved that first-class status and list A classification will be applied to women’s cricket to align with the men’s game and applied retrospectively. Going forward the ICC Women’s Committee will be known as the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee and will assume all decision making responsibility for women’s cricket reporting directly to the CEC. Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies has been appointed to the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee.

ICC Chair Greg Barclay added: “This has been an extremely productive set of Board meetings and I’d like to thank my fellow Board Directors for their efforts in travelling to Dubai to enable us to enjoy our first face to face meeting in more than two years. International travel is not easy in COVID times, but we have achieved a significant amount by being in the same room.

“Finally, on behalf of the ICC Board, I’d like to thank the ICC staff for their continued commitment over the last two years. It hasn’t been a straightforward period and the challenges thrown at us by COVID have impacted on how they have had to operate. They have responded with great energy and have consistently delivered to a high standard culminating with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 which has been a resounding success.”

Surely this is a huge conflict of interest as the Cricket Committee is supposed to provide independent recommendations on law changes? Not sure why they appointed an ex-player as Chair of the committee who just happens to be the President of the most powerful board in the sport. This is hilarious.

It's why I think Pakistan being awarded the CT hosting rights wouldn't have happened without the acceptance of Jay Shah and therefore India might likely tour Pakistan for the CT in 2025.

Or Bcci is confident that they can have the tournament in UAE.

Regarding Sourav, well i doubt anyone will oppose the BCCI president.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly tests positive for Covid-19, admitted to hospital

Sourav Ganguly, the president of BCCI, has tested positive for Covid-19 and has been admitted to a hospital. The news comes in amid the threat of an impending third wave in the country.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has tested positive for Covid-19. The development comes in amid the threat of an impending third wave in India. According to the BCCI sources, Ganguly has been admitted to a hospital after his RT-PCR test report turned out to be positive. He, however, is said to be in a stable state at the moment.

What is a piece of assuring news is that Ganguly is double vaccinated, and hence, is unlikely to be severely affected by the virus. He has been travelling extensively, taking part in all professional activities, as the president of the BCCI.

The 49-year-old was taken to a hospital late on Monday night after his RT-PCR report turned out to be positive. However, the hospitalisation is only a precautionary measure.

"He was taken to Woodlands Nursing Home last night. He has been given medication and is currently stable," a BCCI source tracking Ganguly's health told PTI.

Ganguly has had a few health-related issues this year. He was admitted to the hospital twice in 2021, including an incident related to a heart issue that saw him undergo emergency angioplasty. His elder brother Snehasish Ganguly had also tested positive for COVID early this year, but back then, Ganguly had returned a negative RT-PCR test.

Over the past week or so, the rise in the number of Covid-19 positive infections in various parts of India has been quite dramatic. The fresh surge in the number of new cases has seen quite a few cities across the country issue restrictions. Delhi and Mumbai are leading the charts when it comes to fresh Covid cases, especially that of the new variant Omicron.

As far as the Covid cases in India are concerned, the country has reported 6,358 new cases and 6,450 recoveries over the last 24 hours. The tally of Omicron cases continues to grow, with the latest figures suggesting 653 confirmed cases. The active caseload in India currently stands at 75,456. The recovery rate, at present, is at 98.40%.

Former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was admitted to the hospital Monday night after he tested positive for COVID-19. The hospitalisation was a precautionary measure as teh doctors didn't want to take any chance since Ganguly has had a couple of stents fitted in his arteries earlier this year.

Giving an update on his health, Ganguly's elder brother Snehashish said that the 49-year old is stable and he was admitted as a precautionary measure to the Woodlands Hospital. His blood samples will be sent later on Tuesday to check if he has contracted the new Omicron variant.

Speaking to Indian Express, Snehashish said, "Sourav is stable. He underwent angioplasty earlier this year. So as precautionary measure he has been admitted to Woodlands."

The former Indian captain had undergone angioplasty twice earlier this year after complaining of chest discomfort. Ganguly suffered a heart attack in January during his morning exercise after which he went through the right coronary angioplasty. Almost three weeks later, he suffered a similar pain in his chest and two stents were placed in his arteries.

Former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly continues to be ‘haemodynamically stable’ and non-feverish as per the latest health bulletin released from the Kolkata hospital where he’s admitted. Ganguly was rushed to the hospital after his RT-PCR test returned positive for coronavirus on Monday.

“On the third day of admission, Mr Sourav Ganguly , BCCI President and former Indian cricket captain, remains hemodynamically stable, afebrile and is maintaining oxygen saturation of 99% on room air. He slept well last night and had his breakfast and lunch," read a statement from Woodlands Hospital

“The medical board comprising Dr. Saroj Mondal, Dr Saptarshi Basu and Dr Soutik Panda is keeping a close watch on his health status," it added.

Upon being admitted earlier this week, Ganguly, 49, immediately received Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail therapy on the same night. The antibody cocktail is a combination of two monoclonal antibodies: Casirivimab and Imdevimab. Both Imdevimab and Casirivimab are human immunoglobulin G-1 (IgG1) monoclonal antibodies that act against the virus. The antibody cocktail thwarts the attachment of the virus and its entry into the human cell. Stated for emergency use authorization (EUA), the cocktail antibody is said to have the potential to treat mild-to-moderate Covid-19 infection in adults and patients above 12 years of age who are at a higher risk of developing severe disease and do not need oxygen.

As per reports citing his family sources, there’s no reason to be concerned as the batting legend got himself admitted after doctor’s advise so as to avoid isolating at home.

Ganguly was also hospitalised earlier this year after complaining of “chest discomfort and underwent angioplasty for the second time. His elder brother Snehasish, Cricket Association of Bengal joint secretary, also contracted coronavirus earlier this year.

BCCI president and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was on Friday discharged from the hospital after being treated for COVID-19 but will remain in home isolation for the next two weeks. The former skipper will be in home isolation under doctors' supervision and has not been infected with the Omicron variant, hospital authorities said.

"We have discharged Ganguly this afternoon. He will have to be in home isolation for the next fortnight under doctors' observation. After that the next course of treatment will be decided," a hospital official told PTI.

The 49-year-old was rushed to the Woodlands Multispeciality hospital on Monday night as a precautionary measure after his RT-PCR test came positive for COVID-19.

He received the "Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail therapy" after admission.

Ganguly was admitted to hospital twice earlier this year and underwent emergency angioplasty after having some cardiac issues.

His elder brother Snehasish Ganguly had also tested positive for COVID-19 early this year.

From COVID-19 disruptions to allegations that he has tried to influence selectors to criticism that not enough has been done for women's cricket during his tenure, Sourav Ganguly has endured a challenging 26 months as BCCI President. But in an exclusive interview with PTI, the former India captain not just rejected the accusations thrown at him but also offered a gentle reminder to his critics -- much before becoming the BCCI boss, he was a celebrated India cricketer and played in a whopping 424 international matches, 113 of them Tests.

Steering clear of the drama surrounding the end of Virat Kohli's captaincy tenure, Ganguly answered questions on other sensitive issues like the recently-announced resumption of the Ranji Trophy in two phases, the still awaited decision on India's new Test captain, and start of the Women's IPL.

He also disclosed that the India-West Indies T20Is in Kolkata this month will be a "closed-door" affair and laughed when told about speculation of a possible rift with Board secretary Jay Shah.

Q: There have been allegations that you have been influencing the selection committee and you sit in the meetings to put pressure on the selectors?

A: I don't think I need to answer anybody anything (on this) and dignify any of these baseless accusations. I am the president of BCCI and I do the job of what the president of BCCI should be doing.

Also just to let you know, I see a picture doing the rounds (of social media) showing me sitting in a selection committee meeting.

I want to make it clear, that picture (where Ganguly can be seen sitting with secretary Jay Shah, skipper Virat Kohli and joint secretary Jayesh George) wasn't from a selection committee meeting.

Jayesh George isn't a part of selection committee meetings. (I have played) 424 international matches for India. Not a bad idea at times to remind people about it, isn't it? (laughs)

Q: How has been your working relationship with Jay Shah in the last 26 months in the Indian cricket board?

A: I share a fantastic relationship with Jay. He is a very dear friend and a trusted colleague. Me, Jay, Arun (Dhumal) and Jayesh (George), we have all been working together to get the board going in these difficult times especially with COVID-19 in these two years. To make sure that cricket happens. I would say it has been a fantastic two years. We have all done it as a team.

Q: What kind of a new Test captain are you looking at after Virat Kohli's decision to step down?

A: Obviously, there are certain parameters of leadership and whoever fits the bill will be the next Indian Test captain. I believe selectors will have a name in mind and they will discuss it with office-bearers -- President and Secretary -- and it will be announced in due course of time.

Q: You had recently said that Rahane and Pujara will be playing Ranji Trophy. But does that mean they can get dropped for Sri Lanka Tests although that is now pushed to March?

A: What I meant was that they will play Ranji Trophy as it starts before the Sri Lanka series. After that, the selectors will take a call. Ranji Trophy Elite group starts in third week of February and Sri Lanka Tests are in March. It will completely be the call of selection committee and whatever they decide.

Q: When do we see someone like Hardik Pandya back in India fold? At least looking at options available right now, isn't the team feeling Hardik's absence?

A: Hardik was injured and a break was given to him to completely recover, so that he can continue to serve Indian cricket for a long period of time. I believe I will see him play some Ranji Trophy to start with.

I expect him to bowl a lot more overs and his body will get stronger. Also he is now captain of Ahmedabad IPL and that will be a platform where his form and fitness will be checked by selectors. Accordingly, they will take a call.

Q: Let's talk about Ranji Trophy. The BCCI is finally getting it started but even after increasing match fee to up to Rs 2.4 lakh per game for a certain bracket, most teams would end up playing only three first-class games. Isn't it a financial loss and an issue for all stakeholders?

A: They have played Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali also where the match money has increased. You have to understand that after we discussed with the medical team, it was decided to keep four teams in a group in a particular city as that was the only way we could probably maintain the sanctity of a bio-bubble in COVID times.

More number of individuals in any particular place would increase the rate of infections. That's why venues are more and teams are less. The time-frame, as we had postponed the mid-January start due to spike in cases, was also a factor. We have to have the U-25, U-19 knock-outs, Women's T20.

The IPL and Women's T20 challenge is there. A lot of first-class players would be part of IPL teams. So it's a mixture of everything. The BCCI would never want its first-class players to incur losses.

Q: Why isn't BCCI starting the women's IPL straightaway? Why again a T20 Challenge when a state unit like CAB is having a six team 90-player women's T20 club meet?

A: We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women's IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men's IPL.

Q: IPL is being held in India hopefully. How big a relief will that be?

A: Well, as BCCI has always maintained that this is the Indian Premier League and we would ideally want to hold it in India. Yes, we haven't yet officially announced as we are still tracking the COVID-19 situation in the country. Yes, we would finalise the venues in some time. The plan is very much to hold it in India and we are preparing accordingly.

Q: Any special celebrations for India's 1000th ODI, which will be against the West Indies on Sunday?

A: No, nothing as such as everything is being held in the bubble. We have to maintain the COVID-19 protocols so yes elaborate celebrations won't be possible and in any case matches are being held closed doors.

Q: The state government has allowed 75 per cent spectators at the Eden Gardens for the three T20Is. But isn't BCCI wary given Motera is having closed-door ODIs?

A: Let me put this on record. We are not allowing spectators at the Eden Gardens for the three T20 Internationals. There will not be any tickets for general public. The only people allowed are CAB officials and representatives of the various units.

In these times, we can't risk the health of the players by allowing spectators. No tickets for the stands of Life or Associate members will be issued. Obviously, we have the clearance of West Bengal government but BCCI doesn't want to risk the health safety of players.

I remember that the Indians were very excited about Ganguly becoming the BCCI president and how Ganguly Kohli would form a deadly partnership.

Lol how things change, the same people cannot wait to see the back of Ganguly given how he took action against the untouchable Kohli

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly was admitted to the Narayana Health City hospital here for a cardiac check-up on Friday. The BCCI president is in the city for the Indian Premier League 2022 Mega Auction.

The 49-year-old Ganguly, who had undergone treatment for a heart condition earlier this year, was admitted to the hospital and a team of doctors are assessing his heart conditions. However, the Narayana Health City has not given any updates about his health, but it is believed to be a routine check-up.

Ganguly had twice been admitted to the hospital last year after complaining of chest discomfort. He later underwent two angioplasty procedures.

Ganguly, who is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, was admitted to the hospital after testing positive for the Omicron variant in January 2022. His brother Snehasish Ganguly had also tested Covid-19 positive earlier this year.

Sourav Ganguly vs Jay Shah For ICC Chairman’s Post: Former India captain and currently the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Sourav Ganguly remains the preferred choice to lead the International Cricket Council (ICC) but BCCI secretary Jay Shah‘s growing interest for the top post doesn’t rule him out to be in contention to take over as the chairperson from Greg Barclay, whose tenure is expected to end this year, according to a report by leading Kolkata daily The Telegraph.

Barclay, an Auckland-based commercial lawyer holding board positions with various companies in Australia and New Zealand is likely to not seek an extension once his tw0-year term ends in November because of his professional commitments. However, there is no official confirmation about the same with an ICC spokesperson denying any such report of Barclay stepping down after his tenure gets over.

“Shah has shown huge interest in assuming the ICC chair. Given that the 2023 ODI World Cup will be held in India, it is presumed that someone from the BCCI will be the chairperson,” according to a source, as reported by The Telegraph.

Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council qualifies to run for the chairman’s position, given the fact that he has already attended a couple of board meetings. The ICC constitution states that any present or former director needs to attend at least one board meeting in order to be eligible to run for the top ICC post.

“If Sourav does decide to take the plunge at the ICC, he will want to make sure that he has the numbers in hand if there’s a contest. It is unlikely that the Pakistan board will agree to a BCCI nominee silently. But it’s too early to say if Sourav will give his consent,” the source further added.

Ganguly’s term as the BCCI President will end in October this year and has the option of completing another three-year term before the cooling-off period sets in.

With 17 directors part of the ICC board – comprising of 12 full members, 3 directors from Associates along with chairperson Barclay, the ICC chief executive officer (Geoff Allardice) and an independent woman director Indra Nooyi, the ICC constitution mandates a two-thirds majority or a minimum of 11 votes.

Won't Jay Shah's dad just tell Ganguly to move over? Asking genuinely.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah, on Wednesday, rubbished speculations that board president Sourav Ganguly has resigned from his position.

“The rumours doing the rounds about Mr Sourav Ganguly stepping down from the post of BCCI president are factually incorrect,” Shah told Sportstar.

“We have some exciting times in the form of media rights coming up and my colleagues and I are completely focused on the upcoming opportunity and safeguarding the interest of Indian cricket.”

Ganguly posted a cryptic tweet on Wednesday indicating that he is coming up with something new. Minutes after the tweet went viral, there were speculations that the former India captain might give up his position as the BCCI chief. But this publication understands that Ganguly put up the tweet as a promotion to his new business venture.

“2022 marks the 30th year since the start of my journey with cricket in 1992. Since then, cricket has given me a lot. Most importantly, it has given me the support of all of you. I want to thank every single person who has been a part of the journey, supported me and helped me reach where I am today. Today, I am planning to start something that I feel will probably help a lot of people. I hope you continue your support as I enter this chapter of my life,” Ganguly had tweeted.

Ganguly later confirmed that this was the promotion for an educational app that's set to be launched. Ganguly’s close aides confirmed that the tweet had nothing to do with his stint at the BCCI and that he was not joining politics either. He has been the president of the Board since 2019. This year, the Board successfully conducted the entire Indian Premier League in the country.

Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, put out a tweet on Wednesday announcing "a new chapter" in his life. The tweet led to widespread speculation about his future, with some suggesting that he was going to step down from the cricket board and others predicting a plunge into politics. However, on Thursday he put an end to all speculation as he announced a collaboration with an online teaching app to support "educators, teachers, and coaches" and help them grow.

"I have been getting a lot of questions about my previous post. For a while, I have been thinking about one group of people that has been helping our society selflessly and making India greater every day," the former India captain wrote in his statement.

"IPL gave us amazing players but what inspires me, even more, is the amount of sweat and blood the coaches of all these players put in for their success. This is not just true for Cricket, but all the other fields like Academics, Football, Music, etc as well. I am fortunate to get all the coaches who made me what I am today," he wrote.

"For ages we have been glorifying actors, players and successful CEOs for the remarkable work they have done. It's time that we glorify the true heroes, their COACHES and EDUCATORS. I want to do something for all the coaches, educators and teachers across the world. Starting today, I will actively work to support all of them by being their ambassador," he concluded.

Ganguly had taken over as the president of the BCCI in 2019.

Happy Birthday to Ganguly

Born: 8 July 1972 (age 50 years),

Kolkata: Come September, the focus will be on whether the Sourav Ganguly-Jay Shah regime can continue to be at the helm of BCCI as their three-year term ends ahead of their Annual General Meeting. The suspense continues to be unabated as Supreme Court, under a bench led by N.V. Ramana, Chief Justice of India, on Thursday postponed the hearing of the application of the Indian cricket board which sought a relaxation of the mandatory ‘cooling-off’ period of their officebearers after a six-year term, to July 28.

It was almost after a two-year delay since the BCCI had moved the plea to make amendments to it’s constitution (which was ratified by the apex court in 2018 following the recommendations of Justice R.M.Lodha), the apex court of India had listed the docket on Wednesday - before postponing it by a day. The only new development on Thursday was the court’s appointment of new amicus curiae in senior advocate Maninder Singh. A legal term, ‘amicus curiae’ means an impartial adviser to a court of law in a particular case.

The signficance of the case is almost a no-brainer as not only September 2022 marks the end of a three-year term for the combination of the former Indian captain and Shah, son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, it will also have a bearing on if India will stake claim for the president’s chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The BCCI, according to informed sources, may nominate either of Ganguly or Shah as the successor to Greg Barclay - the New Zealander whose term ends in November.

‘‘Everything hinges on the decision of the Supreme Court. We have to acknowledge that there is a term for everything,’’ a candid Ganguly remarked during an interview to a regional channel a few days back.

A third senior member of the working committee, BCCI joint secretary Jayesh George, has also served six years as officebearer - first with the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) and then BCCI. ‘‘Yes, I have completed six years but cannot comment as the matter is subjudice,’’ George told Gulf News.

With the deadline approaching for BCCI to decide on the fate of the top brass - what with the AGM round the corner and the Indian board also due to host the ICC World Cup next year, the BCCI approached the Supreme Court on July 15 to expedite their plea which sought six amendments - including that of waiving of the cooling off period. Things took a strange twist when BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had on Monday filed an intervention petition before the Supreme Court, opposing the BCCI’s move to tone down the constitution.

The BCCI constitution, as amended by the Supreme Court following the recommendations of the Justice R.M.Lodha Commission meant to be a part of it’s reforms, made it mandatory for an officebearer to go for a cooling-off period of three years on completion of a cumulative period of six years (term in respective state association and cricket board combined).

Ganguly became a joint secretary in his home state Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) in 2014, before taking over as it’s president a year later following the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya. He took charge of the BCCI as its President in October 2019, with the Covid-19 pandemic striking soon after from February-March next year.

Shah, who became an officebearer of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2013, moved to the BCCI as its secretary along with Ganguly in 2019.

After the Ganguly-Shah duo taking over, the general body of BCCI during a AGM on December 1, 2019, passed a resolution seeking six amendments to it’s constitution. The most significant one was in Rule 6 of the Constitution, which had barred the BCCI and state board officebearers from holding office for more than six years - with the board seeking an exception in case of the president and secretary, respectively.

India had suffered a heartbreaking and forgettable group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup last year in the UAE. They won three in a row in the group stage, but their defeats to Pakistan and New Zealand that preceded the streak ensured their early exit.

The management doesn't want to leave any stone unturned for the 2022 edition of the tournament as they have added two more three-match T20I contest for the Indian side which will be played in September and October. While the dates and venues are yet to be confirmed, Ganguly confirmed the fixtures after the Board's Apex Council on Thursday.

“We will host SA and Australia for three T20Is each before going for the T20 World Cup. South Africa will come to India after concluding their ongoing England tour (in September). All those venues which didn’t get to stage a game against SA- Ranchi, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Indore, Mohali- will host T20Is against SA and Australia,” Ganguly told the media.

India had recently hosted the Proteas side, which was their first assignment after IPL 2022. The five-match series had ended in a 2-2 draw after the decider was washed out.

Meanwhile, India will be playing their first ever bilateral series against Australia since January 2021 when the Men in Blue had travelled Down Under.

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday accepted the proposed changes in the Board of Control for Cricket in India's constitution, which will allow current president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to get an extension to their respective terms. The board had put in a plea for modification of its constitution on mandatory cooling off period and tenure of its office bearers. The apex court in its order stated that office bearers can have continuous tenure of 12 years which includes six years in State Association and six years in BCCI. Both Ganguly and Shah's three-year term in the BCCI was set to expire shortly.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said that an office bearer can have continuous tenure of 12 years which includes six years in State Association and six years in BCCI before the cooling-off period of three years triggers.

The bench said that an office bearer can serve on a particular post for two consecutive terms, both at the BCCI and the State Association level, after which he would have to serve three years cooling-off period.

"The purpose of the cooling-off period is not to create undesirable monopolies", the bench said.

The top court's order came on the Board's plea seeking to amend its constitution concerning the tenure of its office bearers including its President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah by doing away with the mandatory cooling-off period between tenures of office bearers across state cricket associations and the BCCI.

The BCCI, in its proposed amendment, has sought the abolition of a cooling-off period for its office bearers which would enable Ganguly and Shah to continue in office as President and Secretary despite them having completed six years at respective state cricket associations.

Earlier, the Justice R M Lodha-led committee had recommended reforms in the BCCI which have been accepted by the top court.

The constitution of the BCCI, which was earlier approved by the top court, stipulates a mandatory three-year cooling-off period for anyone who had served two consecutive terms of three years each in the state cricket association or the BCCI.

While Ganguly was an office bearer in the Cricket Association of Bengal, Shah had served in the Gujarat Cricket Association.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Thursday said the ICC chairmanship is "not in my hands", playing down strong speculation that the former India captain could head to Dubai. In July, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board approved the process to elect the next chairman of the world body in November. After the meeting in Birmingham, it was decided that with Greg Barclay ending his tenure this year, the election will be decided by a simple majority and the term of the Chair will be for a two-year period between December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2024.

Ganguly's name has been doing the rounds since then. But when asked about it, the elegant batter of yesteryear just had this to say: "ICC chairmanship is not in my hands." The ICC Board has decided that a two-thirds majority is no longer required to be elected as the chairman. According to the latest recommendations, the contestant bagging 51 per cent votes will be elected as the winner.

In a 16-member board, the candidate needs just nine votes from the directors to get elected.

The seasoned Jhulan Goswami is retiring from international cricket after playing the third and final ODI against England, and Ganguly called the pacer "an absolute legend".

"Jhulan is an absolute legend... Last three as BCCI president, we have maintained very good relations... she had a fantastic career. She is almost 40.

"Jhulan will leave a mark in women's cricket she is a role model, she should get the highest honour when she finishes at Lord's. She is an absolute champion."

It's been a while now, but Ganguly still can't believe that India lost the Commonwealth Games final in Australia.
