'Fire meets fire under the Kolkata sky!' The iconic Eden Gardens is all set to host a high-voltage clash as India take on the reigning World Test Champions, South Africa, in the first Test of this much-anticipated two-match series. For India, this is more than just another home assignment - it’s a golden chance to climb back into the top two of the World Test Championship standings. For South Africa, it’s about defending their hard-earned crown and proving that their mastery extends beyond home soil. India come into this contest on the back of a dominant 2-0 series win over the West Indies, while the Proteas recently battled out a gritty 1-1 draw against Pakistan in the subcontinent, showing they’re no strangers to these conditions. However, the warning signs are already flashing - the India A side, which included the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Kuldeep Yadav, failed to defend 417 against South Africa A, with only Temba Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza featuring in both sqauds. That result might have planted a small seed of doubt in India’s camp. Still, there are plenty of positives to take in. Dhruv Jurel’s twin hundreds in that game have thrown his name into serious contention, though Rishabh Pant’s return in good touch makes him the frontrunner behind the stumps. At the top, Shubman Gill’s leadership and form will be crucial, alongside the flamboyant Yashasvi Jaiswal, while KL Rahul add class and stability. India’s middle order looks compact with the likes of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, while the spin department featuring Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar remains their biggest weapon at home. The pace attack led by Siraj and Akash Deep provides the necessary bite, but needs more consistency, while Jasprit Bumrah's lethality and experience could make a world of difference in crucial phases. On the other hand, South Africa arrive with confidence and purpose. Temba Bavuma’s return gives them much-needed experience and calmness, while Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi, and Aiden Markram add youthful flair and aggression. The exciting inclusion of Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis brings a fearless edge to their lineup - both capable of changing the game’s tempo with counter-attacking batting. Their biggest asset, however, is their bowling depth. Kagiso Rabada continues to spearhead the attack with Marco Jansen’s pace and swing, and they will enjoy bowling on this Kolkata wicket as it always has something for the pacers.

The spin duo of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, who was superb against Pakistan bring variety and control - something that could trouble India as the Test progresses. In terms of balance, the Proteas appear well-rounded, but their biggest challenge will be adapting quickly to the heat, bounce, and slow nature of Indian wickets. They’ll need their batters to counter India’s spinners and avoid collapses that have often haunted them in Asia. The stakes couldn’t be higher - India last hosted South Africa in 2019-20 and inflicted a 3-0 whitewash, but since then, the Proteas have had the upper hand in Test series between the two. With pride, momentum, and crucial WTC points on the line, this game promises a fierce battle of patience, skill, and temperament. Expect Eden Gardens to roar, as two modern heavyweights lock horns in a contest that could set the tone for their red-ball journeys ahead.

Akash Deep set to play in place of Kuldeep. Kuldeep hard done by Gambhir as he lacks batting skills of Jadeja & Washington.

South Africa have won the toss and have opted to bat

India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

South Africa (Playing XI): Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma(c), Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne(w), Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj

Pitch is still good for batting. This is one of the fastest outfield in India. Beat the infield. Default boundary.

India playing with just 4 specialist bats, wow! This looks more like a T20 XI.

Lol Bumrah just said - Bauna bhi hai when asking for a review against Bavuma which pant declined because of height

Large crowd in the ground. Tests very much alive and kicking in India. No wonder they play a lot of test cricket. Kudos to the Indian fans. Way to support test cricket.

Gill, Pant, Rahul, Jaiswal, Jurel - 5 batsmen.
Counting Pant, yes. And, it wasn't meant to be a criticism, just think 3 allrounders and 6 bowling options is overkill. Perhaps could have gone with another specialist bat.

Eden Gardens is always a good test ground. For some reason they did not play a single test here. May be political reason? Modi vs Mamta?

It is overkill. Since Sai is still in early stage they probably thought Sai is not a massive upgrade over Axar.

Why wouldn't you count our best test batsman for the nearly 7 years?

Most times dismissing both openers in a test inns (since 2018)
13 - Jasprit Bumrah
12 - Stuart Broad
11 - R Ashwin
9 - Kagiso Rabada
9 - James Anderson

But but but he only takes tailend wickets you guys

Good to see IPL FTB Sai finally getting dropped. Washington can make that #3 spot his own.

South Africa doing well after 3 quick wickets.

TMC ruled state, same with Mohali with AAP ruling the state. Sometimes we need to put this politics out & allot matches by rotation.

Anyways only 2 test matches against South Africa is appalling. Should have been atleast 3 test matches.

Nice to see balance of spin and pace rather than spin twin uncles bowling from ball 1

India well ahead already

You can cry. you can whine all you want, but hyperextension will never be chucking and its impossible to chuck with hyperextension. But you can be a flat earther all your life, people will just question your judgement on other things as well.
You seriously believe the opinion of random nobodies that too from Pakistan, and that too about Indian cricket or Indian cricketers matter? 🐒 🐒 :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

If it did matter, Imran Khan would have been the captain of cricket Bible Wisden's All Time Test Xi like a famous past poster Farhad predicted, when he didn't even find a place in the team.

Nice chucking by Bumrah today. Looked in top form.

He should definitely get tested just like Shoaib Akthar and Murali got tested.

Why can't he get tested if there is nothing to hide? What are Indians afraid of? Maybe they know deep down he is a possible chucker.:inti

Fact should always be stated as a fact.
Anybody who has half a brain would know that it is IMPOSSIBLE to chuck with the action that Bumrah has! Sure his bowling action is weird and not the nicest to look at, like some yesteryear greats like Malcolm or Holding -- but only those blinded by hate or jealousy would continue to push the narrative of him even remotely chucking a cricket ball

You are offering serious explanation to troll posts?

I don’t need to be jealous. India relies on a chucker and that chucker thinks he is handsome and Bavuma is a bauna. It’s quite funny actually

Chucker? Declared by whom apart from nobodies from Pakistan?

Eden Gardens is a familiar ground for lot of overseas players due to IPL. But playing against SG is not the same as playing against kookaburra.
