After levelling the one-day international series 1-1 against the world champions, an inexperienced South African side will be hoping to carry that confidence into the shortest format.

Overview

South Africa v England
1st T20I
Buffalo Park, East London
Wednesday, 12 February; 18:00 local, 16:00 GMT

The much-anticipated return of Dale Steyn to the South African set-up might help boost the largely inexperienced home team's self-belief. In the absence of Faf du Plessis and star bowler Kagiso Rabada, Steyn's experience will be of much value to this young side. New captain Quinton de Kock's form is a big positive; he scored 187 runs at 62.33 in the two innings in the ODI series and will be hungry for more. He will be ably assisted by Temba Bavuma at No.3, who performed well in his debut T20I series against India five months ago. David Miller also gives this side the necessary fire-power in the middle-order. Tabraiz Shamsi and Beuran Hendricks, who were the best bowlers in the ODI series, will look to continue on the same note.

England are a more settled unit. With Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes coming back into the setup, the batting line-up looks formidable. The line-up also features Dawid Malan, who returned scores of 11, 39, 55, 103* in the New Zealand series last November. The presence of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow in the squad only adds to the strength.

The spin department will be manned by the veterans Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, who bowled well in the ODIs. England are missing Jofra Archer due to an elbow fracture, but the visitors still have plenty of options in the bowling department.

Remember the last time

After being thoroughly outplayed in the Test series, the Proteas showed glimpses of what they are capable of when they drew the ODI series 1-1. They won the first ODI by seven wickets by restricting England to a modest 258 and then chasing the target with ease, thanks to a superb century from skipper de Kock. After the second ODI was washed out, England levelled the series with a close two-wicket win in the third.

South Africa are meeting England in a bilateral T20I series after nearly three years. They last met in a three-match series in England, which the hosts won 2-1.

What did they say

Dale Steyn, bowler, South Africa (On grooming young bowlers): "I want to kind of orchestrate that bowling line-up a little bit. I want to be able to guide them. I want to stand at mid-off and really say, 'look what are you thinking, what ball are you going to bowl' and hopefully they can learn and get better every game while I'm there. My job is to make sure guys are making the right decisions on the field. That's what I want to achieve out of this."

Jos Buttler, batsman, England: "I'm really excited for these T20s, it is a format I know well and have got a lot of experience in and it's great fun. To have a series with three games in is nice, a lot of the time it is one game on the end of the ODI series so to have three matches to really look forward to is exciting."

Conditions

The weather is expected to be pleasant and partly cloudy with a high of 26-degree celsius. Only two T20Is have been played at the picturesque Buffalo Park. The last was in October 2018, when South Africa defeated Zimbabwe by 34 runs. Small boundaries mean that this could be a high-scoring affair.

England won the toss and opt to bowl

Teams:

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Jos Buttler(w), Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Joe Denly, Moeen Ali, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, Mark Wood

South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w/c), Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, JJ Smuts, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Beuran Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Lungi Ngidi

Miller needs to make sure he is there till 18 th over at least , He can make a big diference in total score

South Africa have a decent top 5 in LO. They need Andile Phehlukwayo to improve with the bat and to find another finisher . Their bowling is good for LO cricket . If they can find another finisher they have a strong LO team in my opinion.

Denly is bang average. Don't understand why he is getting game time over Sam Curran and Tom Banton.

England will be confident of chasing this down. Fascinated to see the batting order.

Styen strikes. He has talked about adapting his game for T20s in recent months.

Buttler
Roy
Bairstow
Stokes
Morgan
Banton
Woakes
Tom Curran
Archer
Wood
Parkinson/Rashid

That would be my England line up. Wouldn't rule out Pat Brown , Moen Ali,Sam Curran , and David Willey of making this 11.

Don't understand Norje hasn't at least been in squads. He was in the WC squad before he was ruled out with injury.

Imran Tahir leading wicket taker at the IPL, but SA looking beyond him. Not just selecting an old player for one format only that is T20 after all. Yet Pak went back to Hafeez and Malik just for a 120 ball format.

Weird captaincy from QDK. I think Markram should be made the permanent captain of SA.

Stokes and Morgan are seen as finishers for England in T20s it seems, they should drop Moeen Ali not sure why he is playing, he will bottle in close chases as at 7, it will be his responsibility to finish off games going forward.

That one special inning from Stokes is pending in T20 format only, maybe WT20?

England need 5 runs in 4 balls

Curran gone!

Good for Pakistan. England could’ve climbed to number 1 in T20 rankings had they won this series 3-0.

Poor stuff from England, after no 4 (Morgan) no batsman had a strike rate of over 100 which is unacceptable in t20s.

So both sides tried to lose hard :)

but what a last over from Lungi Ngidi

Beauty of a game.

T20 at its very best.

Ngidi mate - you little ripper.

We go again on Friday evening.

Hosts go 1 up.

Moeen Ali is the biggest choker in England team. Dropping him midway during WC was the turning point for England.

LUNGI NGIDI bowled a match-winning death spell of 3/10 in two overs to earn the Standard Bank Proteas a one-run victory over England in the opening KFC T20 International at Buffalo Park, East London, on Wednesday evening.

England had looked home and dry when they went into the last six overs needing 50 off 36 balls with 8 wickets in hand but they crumbled badly in the closing overs as KFC Man of the Match Ngidi finished with 3/30, which included the responsibility of having to defend five runs in the final over to prevent a super over and he did exactly that.

Beuran Hendricks who bowled exclusively at the death also played his part with 2/33 in 3 overs while there were also two wickets for Andile Phehlukwayo.

England had bowled equally well at the death of the South African innings, notably by Chris Jordan and Mark Wood as the home side were restricted to 49 in their last six overs.

At one stage the Proteas looked as though they might get a lot closer to 200 than their final total of 178 after Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma put on 48 for the first wicket off only 26 balls and then Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen a further 63 for the second wicket in 40 balls.

But the England spin duo of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid again slowed things down with returns of 1/22 and 1/23 respectively.

The start of the England innings followed much the same pattern with Jason Roy smashing top score of the match of 70 off 38 balls (7 fours and 3 sixes).

Eoin Morgan consolidate for England with the second half-century of the match (52 off 34 balls, 7 fours and a six) but it was his dismissal by Hendricks, preceded by Ngidi’s dismissal of Ben Stokes that finally swung the game South Africa’s way.

It was the third time South Africa have won a match by one run.

Interestingly, the teams level at 68/1 after the six power play overs and again at 128 after 14 although the Proteas had lost three wickets at that stage to England’s two.

South Africa are rebuilding and will be one of dangerous teams to watch out this WC. I want them to win the tournament this time, will help SA massively

What a mess England made of that chase.

Strange decisions regarding their batting order.

yes England awakened the real beast. I think they will be back rather soon in test cricket. Probably for the next championship though

South Africa also drew with india away in t20. Don't write them off. They are a good side.
