After a string of defeats and unfavourable results, a 3-0 win for Quinton de Kock’s men would go a long way in helping them find their feet.

Overview

South Africa v Australia, 3rd ODI
Senwes Park, Potchefstroom
Saturday, 7 March; 10:00am local time, 08:00am GMT

After a string of recent reversals, South Africa finally have a series win under their belt, and that too against a quality Australian side. It’s an important moment in the new era under Quinton de Kock. That they have achieved it without Kagiso Rabada and Faf du Plessis, two lynchpins of their one-day unit, must be especially pleasing.

Lungi Ngidi has stepped up ably in the absence of Rabada, snaring nine wickets, including a career-best 6/58, in two games. With the bat, they have found heroes in the form of Janneman Malan and Heinrich Klassen in the two games, but the return to form of veteran David Miller has also been welcome.

Australia, by contrast, haven’t had contributions of that sort of magnitude so far. Teams often do well despite lacking individual contributions of substantial size, but that takes a collective effort, which has been missing as well, with only one Australian – Cummins – in the top three among batsmen and bowlers.

The last time South Africa played Australia in an ODI series at home, they swept the opposition clean. One more win would not only mean that history repeats itself but also give a team on the slide much-needed rope as they seek to reinvent themselves.

What happened last time

Ngidi tore through Australia with a career-best six-for, as the visitors were bowled out for 271, despite half-centuries from Aaron Finch and D’Arcy Short. Malan’s maiden one-day century, in just his second match, then set the tone for a comfortable chase.

What they said

Janneman Malan, South Africa batsman: "I was happy to get past the first ball, but compliments to the bowling unit, and I had great partners in the chase.”

Aaron Finch, Australia captain: "We were 20-30 runs short with the bat, but South Africa played very well, changed the momentum of the game with some smart batting.”

Conditions

A nice, clear day awaits, with plenty of sun in Potchefstroom. Senwes Park has hosted only three ODIs over the last decade and all three have been won by the team batting second.

South Africa should win this game from here. The good thing for them is that some of the newer players have performed so it gives them more options going forward.

I baffled as to how we're winning against Australia. Perhaps it just shows the difference between limited over and test cricket.

South Africa will be a top class LO side.

In tests it is going to take them a few years to come back though.

Mitchell Marsh may have not been good enough in tests . But I think he is a very good LO player and should have been a regular.

They're playing at some uncommon grounds in this series. Potchefstroom this one, and Paarl and Bloemfontein.

I'd be honest to say this is a bit a home track bullying.

Good to see young Jhye Richardson back in the team, I'll be seeing in there is any reduction in pace. Shoulder dislocation is one of the worst injuries ever

SAF is just proving the depth of their cricket. Aussies are a bit under strength today, but for SAF also Ngidi & Sharmaji not playing in a heir already depleted squad.

SAF was just recovering from the loss of few ATGs - in last 2-3 years, they have lost (retired or just faded away) Amla, AdV, Styen, M Morkel, Faf, Vernon Phi .... even Elgar has faded away. These are top quality players and some of them are genuine ATG, some ATG in SAF conditions. It’s not easy to replace these players overnight - I am sure SAF will make a quicker recovery than what we are predicting, even in Test cricket.

I am 100% sure they are back in odi format. They are already quality in odi.

test will take about 3 years max.

Why so many ODIs being played? Is this the end of Test Cricket?

Nortje looks great. Easily better than all the current Asian bowlers besides Bumrah.

RSA will always be bilateral bullies even during their worst days. They have a 12-2 record against Aus in the last 4 years.

Yeah but they have been struggling in bilateral ODI games too recently. Not the same type of dominance like they used to have.

3-0 is excellent nonetheless. It should give them momentum.

Well played SA. They played with 3 non white players today, I dont think they can continue with this combination as they have to maintain average of 6 players of color including 2 native africans.

Rabada, Ngidi, Bavuma and Shamsi will comeback in I guess going forward.

They still maintained top 4 ODI rankings. They are still better than Pak, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh for sure.

Not sure though if as per the last rule, requirement is for 5 or 6 players of color on average.

KLAASEN PUTS FINISHING TOUCHES TO 3-0 SERIES CLEAN SWEEP

Saturday, 07 March 2020

HEINRICH KLAASEN put his stamp on the Momentum One-Day Series in typically emphatic style with a six into a packed crowd to put the seal on the Standard Bank Proteas 3-0 clean sweep over Australia at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom today.

It was their second successive six-wicket win in the series, this time with a substantial four and a half overs to spare, and means that they have now win eight games in a row in the ODI format at home to Australia and have, in all, won 11 of their last 12 matches around the world against these opponents.

It will give the team a massive boost of confidence before they set off tomorrow for their testing three-match ODI Series against India which starts on Thursday.

Momentum Man of the Series Klaasen finished with an unbeaten 68 off 63 balls (8 fours and a six) to give him an aggregate of more than 200 runs for the series, having only been dismissed once, and a strike rate in excess of 100 percent.

In today’s match he excelled as a finisher as good partnerships of 47 for the first wicket between Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan and then 96 for the third between Jon-Jon Smuts (84 off 98 balls, 12 fours) and Kyle Verreynne (50 off 50 balls, 3 fours and 3 sixes) laid the foundation, both players scoring their maiden half-centuries.

Momentum Man of the Match Smuts had a wonderful game all-round as he also took two wickets for the first time with his well-flighted left-arm spin. He was also employed in the final power play in the absence of Tabraiz Shamsi as part of De Kock’s bowling strategy throughout the series.

The other major contributors to the win were the new ball pairing of Anrich Nortje and Lutho Sipamla who between them bowled 41 dot balls out of the 60 in the opening power play. Against a team that contains the top three that Australia do this amounted to a phenomenal performance.

They were well backed up by debutant Daryn Dupavillon and Andile Phehlukwayo as well as the spin of Keshav Maharaj to limit the target to 255.

There were only two players who really kept the Australians in the game, first through Marnus Labuschagne’s maiden ODI century (108 off 108 balls, 8 fours) on what amounted to a fairy tale return to the area where he was introduced to cricket, and then through Josh Hazlewood who dismissed both the Proteas openers at a stage when Australia must have fancied their chances.

But Smuts and Verreynne settled things down before Klaasen provided the finishing touches.

qdk is counted as a coloured player apparently. He really isn't though. I think they are relaxing on the quota system a bit tbh. G. smith will make some changes.

Pretty embarrassing from Aus.

This SA doesn't look that flash either.

Congratulations to tabrezi too on the birth of his baby
South Africa are back after losing ab devillers and hashim Amla as well as Dale steyn all at the same time
They need to get rid of both the quota system and kolpak system if their momentum is to stay reignited

AUSTRALIA have lost their last 5 ODIs but will be alright when they play NZ at home next week.

This SA team still looks pretty ordinary.

Still a lot to prove.

They will be a top class LO side.

In tests they need a few years to recover.

Even this so called weak South Africa ran India and NZ close at the WC, and beat Australia lol.
