South Africa look to complete a 3-0 whitewash as teams head to Cape Town for the final ODI of the series.

Overview
South Africa vs India, third ODI
Newlands, Cape Town
January 23, 10:30 am local

Since 2016, South Africa have completed seven ODI series whitewashes at home, blanking five different opponents – Australia (2016 & 2020), Ireland (2016 – one-match series), Sri Lanka (2017 and 2019), Zimbabwe (2018) and Bangladesh (2017). India are in line to be the sixth team if everything goes to plan for the hosts on Sunday in Cape Town.

So far, South Africa have been polished in their template in the first two ODIs, winning the first one by setting a score and then completing the highest-ever successful ODI run chase in Paarl in the second.

Each of the top five batters have made significant contributions in at least one of the two matches while the spinners have done their job with the ball, bringing South Africa back into the contest in both matches.

India, on the other hand, were unchanged in the first two matches and could look at potential changes to their XI. The batting lost its way in the middle overs in both matches despite promising starts. The bowling, on the other hand, hasn’t really troubled South Africa much.

Remember the last time

In Paarl on Friday, South Africa recorded the highest successful run chase in the venue spurred by a solid start from the openers. India’s bowlers have struggled to make inroads in the Powerplay in the last couple of years, and it is something the team will want to rectify in Cape Town, on what is expected to be a spicier pitch compared to the sluggish surface in Paarl.

India won an ODI series 5-1 in South Africa in 2018, but on this tour, they have struggled to be as dominating with the hosts stepping up with bat and ball in both matches.

What they said

Rishabh Pant (India wicketkeeper): “We are playing ODIs after long time and lots of factors we can talk about but as a team, we are always looking to improve and hopefully, we will be able to rectify them in coming matches."

Janneman Malan (South Africa opener): “We were happy to have two hundreds in the previous game, and maybe we could have had me or Quinny getting to a hundred here, but I’m very proud of the partnerships we had.”

Kohli needs to be dropped, he is clearly not happy and looks disinterested.. Having someone with that kind of attitude would not be good for the youngsters in the team....

Indian squad looks fractured for the first time in many years. Management is to blame for it. Rahul is a stand in captain and even then looks least like a leader.

India have won the toss and have opted to field

South Africa (Playing XI): Janneman Malan, Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram(c), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Dwaine Pretorius, Lungi Ngidi, Sisanda Magala

India (Playing XI): KL Rahul(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Jayant Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal

Bowling of both teams looks weak. Why Shamsi not playing. Ashwin is also better than Chahal surely.

What even is the point of playing Bumrah, Kohli etc in a useless dead rubber?

Jayant Yadav lol... :91:

Chahar looks like another trundler bowling in 120's. But Krishna is bowling decently good to see a tall bowler beating the batsmen with bounce

India should always play only one trundler in the team, either Shardul or Deepak and both are capable batsman and score at good rate. So, that no.8 spot is there for them.

The two main pacers can be any of Bumrah, Siraj, Shami, Prasidh or Avesh.

Who is the lead spinner? I think Indian management has treated kuldeep very poorly they should have given him confidence when he was out of form

When Kohli was our captain he chose to skip games like these. Now that he is no longer a captain in any format he will play each and every match for India. :inti

What is Quinton de Koc's average against India in ODIs?

This Jayant is the most harmless full time bowler I have seen and yet has a respectable average in test matches just shows how tailor made spin pitches are being made in India these days hence the records of their current spinners.

Most ODI 100s against India
7 - Sanath Jayasuriya
6 - Ricky Ponting/ABdeV/Kumar Sangakkara/Quinton de Kock

surprised that Rassie van der Dussen isnt talked more on this forum, looks so calm, keeps the strike rate over 80% at all times, constructs his innings throughout very well, generally his strike rate is over 100% from 60 0dd balls.

he's just got his 50,

a SA non choker?

None. They all are pretenders. Yuzi, Kuldeep, Rahul Chahar, Ashwin,Jadeja,Axar,Sundar Jayant all of them.

India should try Bishnoi as the final dice. If it works, good. If it doesn't then pick only guys who can contribute with bat(Jadeja and Sundar).

Who’s this Jayant Yadav guy, and how did he get picked for India with a list a average of 34?

Also, is he really 32?👀

Shreyas should bowl more regularly if he wants to be part of the team consistently. Good start nevertheless.

A full strength XI can be :-

Rohit(c)
Dhawan
Kohli
KL
Shreyas
Pant(wkt)
Jadeja
Shardul/ D Chahar
One Spinner
Siraj/Shami
Bumrah

South Africa are favourites imo… got a very competitive score on the board.

India should chase this SA is average at best, and they left out Shamsi too.
Need a big scores from two of Rahul, Dhawan or Kohli.

Oh man i hope kohli scores this ton infront of his daughter.
Will be amazing feeling for him not as a player but as a Dad
Because he is yet to score a ton since his daughter was born

Our cricket talent is at all time low and the supply chain is at its lowest as well with no domestic cricket in sight. There is not a single young player I like or consider to be international class with perhaps the expection of Shreyas Iyer who got some pedigree.

BCCI need to get its act right ASAP with domestic cricket. No Ranji since 2019 season has started to hurt us now.

Its criminal how Maharaj and Markram are being allowed to get away with 'murder'.

That should be the game for SA.

This series and the 2nd test should be enough hint for BCCI mandarins that Rahul is so out of depth as a cricketer, more so as a leader.

Mahraj taking wickets of Pakistan and India leading men. The match is now slipping away from India, although still enough batting left.

Tomorrow's headline :-

Kohli got out quickly after raising his bat to Anushka and his daughter.

Kohli is not finished. All time greats do not go out with a whimper. Only a matter of time before he's back to scoring hundreds and then it'll be a deluge of runs.

SKY is such an amazing player, batting so well.

#ThankstoIPL!

Kohli with a net worth of $180 million is surely not going to be hungry for things as he was in the past

Dhawan played such a useless innings, yet again. He has now strengthened his position in team till next ODI WC at least.

Which also means that we'll again come up short in this format.

TBH he's not the biggest problem in the team right now. The middle order is minnow level atm. With the kind of start India had a better middle order would have won this game. Against this bowling attack

Scores runs fast and looks very confident. An important addition to the team. We have some stats padder so he is a good addition.

Scores runs fast and looks very confident. Are we talking about a tailender here.
He take just too many risks to score his runs. Look at the shot he played today.

At no.6, you need players like him only. Once Rohit and Jadeja are back, his quick runs will be very valuable in the team.

It's really sad to see Indian cricket team performance in South Africa.
The story remains the same for Indian cricket team in white ball format. We will win only when our top 3 will score the moment they are gone we will not score at all

He may not be the biggest problem but he is a big problem nonetheless. Teams have dashers at top of their order while we have this good for nothing trundler.
