Very impressed by his composure and how busy he has been - but looks to me A tour to India has given him the confidence that he needs.

Seems to be a fan of Hashim Amla as per Haysman on TV but excellent start to his career.

Looks very compact, he is going to be good. He is in the mold of Darryl Cullinan.

Was some awful bowling tbf but still played some confident shots!

How effortlessly he’s got to 38* - made it look so easy, but for a Pakistani top order batsman getting to 38 takes more effort than it took Alexander the Great to conquer half the world.

A Pakistan fan on CI caught one of our players asking what his name was when he came out to bat.

My god, you IDIOTS. Do you do ANY homework or planning on the opposition whatsoever ?

It's not like Hamza plays in Outer Mongolia. Do we not have any footage of him in South African domestic ?

Even the nakhli Pakistanis are better than the home based genuine ones. I am tempted to say when you hit the bottom the only way is up. But I think this Pakistan team can find a way to dig a bit further!

56* in tough conditions vs India in 3rd Test - very impressive.

and people said south africa will lack talent lol. never. What a phenomenal talent. Well done my man. Next amla for sure.

Markram , QDK, Zubayr , The Malan brothers . SA test lineup has to be around this lot. De bruyn and bavuma are completely out of their depth at this level.

He looked really good in that first innings and has a nice, organized approach to batting.

Smacking Archer about in the 1st Test vs England - delight to watch.

Proteas batsman Zubayr Hamza suspended from cricket amid suspected doping revelation

Proteas batsman Zubayr Hamza has agreed to a voluntary suspension from cricket after it emerged he tested positive for a prohibited substance under the International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-doping code.

The positive test followed an ICC anti-doping test on 17 January 2022, Cricket South Africa announced on Wednesday.

"Zubayr is not disputing the positive test, is co-operating fully with the ICC, and has agreed to a voluntary suspension commencing immediately whilst written submissions are presented to the ICC," the statement said.

CSA added: "The positive test relates to the substance Furosemide, which is not a performance enhancing substance, and Zubayr has been able to identify how the substance entered his system. The process to follow will entail presenting evidence that there was no fault or negligence, or no significant fault or negligence on the part of Zubayr.

"CSA, SACA and WPCA are supporting Zubayr in this process, and will continue to do so until the matter is concluded."

International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged South African batter Zubayr Hamza with an anti-doping rule violation under the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

Hamza has been charged with the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance following the detection of Furosemide in a sample collected out-of-competition on 17 January 2022 and has been provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the disciplinary process.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that South African batter Zubayr Hamza has been suspended from all cricket-related activities for nine months after admitting to an anti-doping rule violation under the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

Hamza provided an out-of-competition sample on 17 January 2022 in Paarl, South Africa, in which the prohibited substance Furosemide - which is a specified substance in Section S5 of the 2022 WADA Prohibited List - was found.

He admitted the violation and, having established no significant fault or negligence on his part, a nine-month period of ineligibility has been imposed, backdated to 22 March 2022, the date that Hamza accepted a provisional suspension. The effect of this suspension is that Hamza will be eligible to return to cricket on 22 December 2022.

In addition, all of Hamza’s individual performances between 17 January and 22 March 2022 have been disqualified.

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit said: “The ICC is committed to keeping cricket clean and has a zero-tolerance approach to doping. It is also a timely reminder to all international cricketers that they remain responsible for anything they put into their bodies, to know exactly what medication they are taking so as to ensure it does not contain a prohibited substance and does not result in an anti-doping rule violation.”

SACA COMMENTS ON HAMZA SUSPENSION

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that Zubayr Hamza will serve a suspension of nine months, commencing on the 22 March 2022, following his positive test for the prohibited substance Furosemide.

Andrew Breetzke, SACA CEO, commented; “from the outset, Zubayr co-operated with the ICC on providing full disclosure of medications that he had been taking, and the sequence of events leading up to the positive test. Through this process, we were able to determine how Furosemide came to be in his sample.

The ICC considered and accepted his submission, and we are pleased that Zubayr will be back playing cricket at the end of this year. SACA will continue to support Zubayr during the period of his suspension”.

Zubayr noted his relief that the matter had been concluded; “I wish to thank the ICC for the professional manner in which they managed this process. I have never intentionally taken a prohibited substance and I am relieved that the ICC determination confirms this fact. The past few months have been difficult for me on a personal and professional level, and I have learnt lessons that I will share with my fellow players.

I would like to thank Cricket South Africa and Western Province for their support during this time. I would also like to thank my attorney, Barend Kellerman, for his expertise in navigating this process, and SACA for their comprehensive support during what has been a difficult time for me.”

This is interesting, I've never seen a cricket board wipe a player's stats before.

I like Zubayr, he comes across as a very good bloke and for someone who follows South African cricket closely I can say that this suspension and ban couldn't have happened at a worse time for Zuby. He had put in some terrific LOI performances at domestic level, and got selected in the ODI team, he then made it to the test squad in NZL and was certain to be in the squads for Bangladesh series as most players were off for IPL. He had a golden opportunity to cement his place in the side.

He will have to start it all over again.

Pull the other one - it’s got bells on.

Frusemide is a loop diuretic - it’s a masking agent for performance-enhancing and recreational drugs.

Just as Shane Warne’s excuse about his diuretic was an insult to the intelligence, as was Yasir Shah’s excuse in 2016, this excuse is ridiculous too.

South Africa batter Zubayr Hamza has been banned for nine months after testing positive for a heart medication he said he took by accident.

Hamza, 26, told the International Cricket Council (ICC) he intended to take his own medication but instead ingested his father's heart medication.

The ICC accepted his explanation and gave him a shorter ban, but he will miss this summer's tour of England.

He played the last of his six Tests in February against New Zealand.

Hamza averages 17.66 from six Tests with a high score of 62 and played three Tests against England in the 2019-20 series.

He provided an out-of-competition sample in January in which the prohibited substance Furosemide was found.

The ICC's integrity unit said it "established no significant fault or negligence on his part".

"I have never intentionally taken a prohibited substance and I am relieved that the ICC determination confirms this fact," Hamza said.

"The past few months have been difficult for me on a personal and professional level, and I have learnt lessons that I will share with my fellow players."

The ICC integrity unit manager Alex Marshall said the case is a "timely reminder" cricketers "remain responsible for anything they put into their bodies" and to "know exactly what medication they are taking".

Might have to ask my dad if he has any roids I can accidently take. Seems like a common thing.

South Africa batter Zubayr Hamza is poised to make his international return in June after a nine-month drug ban.

The 27-year-old, who has played six Tests, has been selected in the South Africa A squad to tour Sri Lanka.

Hamza was banned from all cricket-related activities by the International Cricket Council (ICC) last May.

He told the ICC he intended to take his own anti-allergy medication but instead ingested his father's heart medicine, containing banned substance Furosemide.

His suspension ended in December and Hamza, who has always denied taking a banned substance intentionally, has since played four first-class matches in South Africa's domestic competition.

The squad will be captained by Tony de Zorzi, who recently made his debut at Test and one-day level against West Indies.

The experienced figures of Keegan Petersen, Kyle Verreynne, Gerald Coetzee and Tristan Stubbs - who have all competed at international level - are also included.

In a squad mixing experience and youth, 19-year-old prospect Dewald Brevis - nicknamed 'Baby AB' in honour of former Proteas skipper AB de Villiers - and 21-year-old Jordan Hermann will also make the trip.

"The squad reflects the next crop of players that are emerging from our pipeline. We also rewarded those who have performed for their respective domestic teams this past summer," said Test head coach Shukri Conrad.

"The tour will provide the opportunity for those players, together with the younger Proteas, to put their skills to the test in highly competitive, international conditions.

"It will also serve to strengthen the batting depth in the red-ball department, as we build towards the Test series against India later this year."

South Africa A squad: Tony de Zorzi (captain), Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Gerald Coetzee, Zubayr Hamza, Jordan Hermann , Tshepo Moreki, Senuran Muthusamy, Keegan Petersen, Sinethemba Qeshile, Lutho Sipamla, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams.
