Having brushed Sri Lanka aside in the first game, South Africa will hope to close the series out with another win in the second Test, starting 3 January in Johannesburg.

Overview

South Africa v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test
New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
Sunday, 3 January – Thursday, 7 January, 10.00am local time, 8.00am GMT

South Africa have lost each of their last three bilateral Test series, despite two of those contests being at home. Their last series win came over two years ago, against Pakistan, and so, they will be keen to close the series out against an injury-hit Sri Lanka.

A 2-0 win would also help the Proteas avenge their surprising and historic loss at home to the same opposition in early 2019.

Sri Lanka, despite their humbling defeat in the first Test, will look to seek inspiration from that very series as they try to hit back in the second Test. But the visitors will have to contend with several injury setbacks going into the second match.

Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and Suranga Lakmal are among those who picked up injuries in the first Test and are unlikely to recover in time to participate in the second match. Dhananjaya de Silva has already been ruled out.

With the fast-bowling unit hit especially badly with injury concerns, the likes of Dushmantha Chameera and Vishwa Fernando could get a look in.

Remember the last time:

Sri Lanka, playing their first Test since February, started positively in Centurion, scoring 340/6 on the first day of the match. But things quickly unravelled from there as they were bowled out for 396.

Faf du Plessis made a sublime 199 and South Africa posted 621 against an attack that was hindered by injury setbacks. Sri Lanka were then knocked over for 180 in their second innings as all of South Africa's seamers struck two blows each to help their side claim victory by an innings and 45 runs.

What they said:

Temba Bavuma (South Africa batsman): "There is a feeling of unfinished business (after being dismissed for 71 in the first game) and the opportunity is there to get in and get some runs. I would like to do so, and make it count."

Ashantha de Mel (Sri Lanka manager): "I've never been on a tour with so many injuries. We've not played a Test match since February, so that must have had an effect."

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to bat

South Africa (Playing XI): Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock(w/c), Temba Bavuma, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi

Slow but solid start for Sri Lanka - long day ahead.

Complete destruction by SAF - probably going to bat once in this Test as well. This only tells how good they are and the availability of their talent pool. Mulder’s FC stats are like 40/25 after 35 games in SAF domestics by the age before 23 - he has to be one of the stars of this decade.

No Rabada as well .

A career-best six-for by Anrich Nortje set the Proteas on their way to a dominant day one of the second Betway Test against Sri Lanka at Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

After winning the toss and batting, the tourists were dismantled for 157 as the fast bowler ran riot with six for 56 – beating his previous best return of five for 110 against England at the same venue last year.

Dean Elgar then lead the reply with an unbeaten 92 off 119 balls (16 fours) to help South Africa reach stumps on 148 for one, trailing by just nine and completing a one-sided day on the Highveld.

The hosts went into the game already 1-0 up in the two-match series following a clinical innings and 45-run victory in the opening Test last week.

And they made a much better start in that game by using just 40.3 overs to dismantle the Sri Lankans.

However, it was not so easy going initially as the islanders made a strong start by reaching 71 for one in the 21st over thanks to Kusal Perera’s attacking 60 (67 balls, 11 fours).

This after the home side bowled short in the initial part of the first session, but that changed once the highly impressive Wiaan Mulder (3/25) was introduced to the attack, with his triple strike before lunch completely altering the script.

The all-rounder was only asked to bowl in the 19th over, but took out Perera, Kusal Mendis (0) and Lahiru Thirimanne (17) within the space of 11 deliveries.

And when Minod Bhanuka (5), one of two debutants for the visitors, fell on the stroke of lunch, the Asian side were limping on 84 for five.

It was then over to Nortje after lunch as he wasted little time in running through the lower order. Only Wanindu de Silva (29) and Dushmantha Chameera (22) offered any resistance as the fast bowler completed his seventh first-class fiver-for.

South Africa lost Aiden Markram (5) to the other debut man Asitha Fernando (1/30) early in the reply, but that was as good as it got for Mickey Arthur’s charges.

Elgar, who was out for 95 in his only innings in the first Test, moved to within eight runs of three figures during a fine second-wicket partnership of 114 alongside Rassie van der Dussen – the former also going past 4 000 Test runs during his fluent innings.

After a slow start to his knock, the latter reached the close unbeaten on 40 (82 balls, 6 fours) and the Proteas in the box seat.

Mickey Arthur fans were distributing mithai after day 1 of the first Test. Talk about jumping the gun.

He will always be a third class Test coach. He lucked out in South Africa when we had a young core of excellent cricketers.

Yeah, because before Mickey Arthur Sri Lanka were amazing.

Can’t blame him for having to coach mediocre players.

I think Arthur is a decent coach and he can develop players, I’m sure he could develop a couple of the Sri Lankan players but the way some people were doing banghra on day 1 of the first test was embarrassing. They gave him credit for the batting, but when Markham and Elgar were hammering the bowlers these people blamed the players. I’m certain had the bowlers performed or even Sri Lanka were doing well in this game, Arthur fan club would be praising him and be bashing Misbah lol.

South Africa at that time was a pure Graeme Smith team, he called the shots and ran the show. It had very little to do with Mickey Arthur. His subsequent coaching tenures have not been very flattering

A sign of a good captain and a good coach is one who can get the best out of mediocre resources and even potentially over achieve with them

coaches in cricket don't have much power, they're not like managers in soccer and basketball

If Mickey Arthur was any good, he would have coached a top team after the Pakistan stint. He is becoming another Dav Whatmore. He will keep moving around South Asia excluding India.

His next stop will be Bangladesh or Afghanistan or Nepal.

Sri Lanka was his only option.

Aus are settled with Langer.
Kohli was settled with Shastri😉
England had Trevor Bayliss

Australia will never go near him after his disastrous stint.

England replaced Bayliss after the World Cup and they weren’t interested in him.

India would also not go near him regardless of his history with Pakistan. He has never had the chance to coach in IPL either.

Only cash-strapped Asian boards are keeping him in the job these days.

Sri Lankas bowling is really weak. But they do have some talented batters.

Great fight back - a lead of 170 could be interesting...

The RR in this series has been crazy from both teams. I think a lack of first class games has played a part in Sri Lanka injuries and the wayward bowling.

This is one hell of a come back. Even Sri Lanka C is better than our over hyped useless superstars.

There batting is good and experienced . There seam bowling is really weak . But they have made a good comeback into this test.

Kusal Mendis decline has been really sad. Thought he would kick on under Arthur but he really hasn't.

It's always good to see nortje runs in and bowl his heart out.Very good bowler.Much better than trundlers like lungi ngidi and sipamla.

Sri Lanka effectively 5/4 at the end of day 2.

If they somehow get to 170-180, we have a game on here.

Day 2: Stumps - Sri Lanka lead by 5 runs

Dean Elgar completed his 13th career century before Sri Lanka hit back on day two of the second Betway Test against the Proteas at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday.

The experienced opener, unbeaten on 92 after the opening day on Sunday, went on to score 127 (163 balls, 22 fours) before his team stuttered and stumbled their way to 302 all out – an innings lead of 145.

Opposition captain Dimuth Karunaratne’s unbeaten 91 off 116 balls (17 fours) then helped head a much better Sri Lankan response that saw them go to the close on 150 for four.

That gave the tourists a lead of five at the end of the second day, a far more promising position than they may have foreseen 24 hours earlier when the South Africans closed day one on a commanding 148 for one having dismissed the visitors for 157 first time around.

But after good initial progress by Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen (67 off 127 balls, 12 fours), they lost their way badly by losing their last nine wickets for a poor 84.

The overnight pair extended their second wicket partnership to 184, before both finally fell with the score on 218, the latter completing his fourth career half-century during his innings.

Things then unravelled badly for the home side as key middle order trio if Faf du Plessis (8), Quinton de Kock (10) and Temba Bavuma (19) fell cheaply.

Debutant Vishwa Fernando was the chief destroyer as he bagged a five-for, ending with figures of five for 101, with the host bowled out in 75.4 overs.

South Africa’s spearhead Lungi Ngidi, who bounced back from his first innings blank with three for 26, then landed an early blow to the islanders when he cleaned up Kusal Perera for one to leave the Sri Lankans on one for one early on.

But skipper Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne (31) knuckled down during a partnership of 85 for the second wicket to get the innings back on track.

Ngidi, however, set them back badly with two wickets in two balls and Anrich Nortje (1/41) struck 17 runs later to suddenly leave the tourists in a big hole at 109 for four.

The captain then found another partner willing to fight in the form of Niroshan Dickwella (18) as they closed out the day with their side in the lead.

Lutho Sipamla tore through the Sri Lanka tail to set up a chase of 67 for South Africa, which openers Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram managed with little difficulty.

The visitors resumed with a small lead of just five runs, and six second-innings wickets in hand on day three. Dimuth Karunaratne had been instrumental in knocking off the deficit, and he soon moved to his 10th Test hundred.

But the skipper skied an attempted pull off Anrich Nortje shortly after and was caught for 103, before Niroshan Dickwella mistimed a drive to hand Lungi Ngidi his fourth wicket of the innings.

Dasun Shanaka was caught at mid-on from the bowling of Wiaan Mulder for eight, and Wanindu Hasaranga's innings of 16 ended with a heave across the line against Sipamla.

The 22-year-old quick bowler, in just his second Test, then wrapped up the innings by having Dushmantha Chameera caught behind before clattering Asitha Fernando's off stump to leave the visitors 211 all out.

With just 67 runs needed to secure victory, Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram set out positively. The five overs of play before lunch saw them reach 24/0, although there was a late scare for Markram as he edged one low to slip. However, the third umpire adjudged that it had not carried.

In all the pair took just 13.2 overs to reach the target, securing a 2-0 series sweep as well as a full 120 ICC World Test Championship points from the series.

Sri Lanka will now head home to face England in another two Tests, while South Africa's next challenge will be their visit to Pakistan.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has congratulated the Proteas for sealing the Betway Test Series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Quinton de Kock and his team wrapped up a 2-0 scoreline by winning the second match by 10 wickets inside three days at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

It is their first series win in the ICC World Test Championship, helping them to a total of 144 points in sixth place.

“Congratulations to head coach Mark Boucher, captain Quinton de Kock and all the players and team management on their excellent series win,” stated Director of Cricket Graeme Smith. “It is an excellent start to what is expected to be a busy summer of Test cricket.

“This result also helps us make some good progress in the ICC World Test Championship and I’m sure the team will only get better from here.

“It has been really encouraging to see how this fairly young team has progressed under the leadership of Quinny.

“We must remember that the fast bowling attack did not have many Test matches behind them before this series, but they came together as a unit and showed incredible maturity. I was very impressed with the way Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla and Wiaan Mulder came together.

“With the bat we saw Faf (du Plessis) show how much he still has to offer South African cricket with his outstanding 199 in the first Test. Dean Elgar again proved why he is amongst the best openers in the world and there were also good performances from Aiden (Markram), Temba (Bavuma) and Rassie (van der Dussen) along the way.

“All in all, I was really happy with what I witnessed through the series.”

Smith also thanked Sri Lanka for undertaking the trip to South Africa and making the series possible.

“We would also like to thank our counterparts Sri Lanka Cricket for their cooperation and putting their trust in CSA during these difficult times the world is experiencing due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

JOHANNESBURG: Lutho Sipamla grabbed three wickets to help the Proteas blow away Sri Lanka on the third morning before an attacking opening partnership sealed a resounding 10-wicket win in the second Betway Test at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The result helped South Africa seal the two-match series 2-0.

Lungi Ngidi (4/44), Anrich Nortje (2/64) and Wiaan Mulder (1/52) all claimed a wicket each by the time the rookie paceman stepped in to dismantle the tail with his three for 40, which arrived within the space of six deliveries, bowling out the tourists for 211.

From that total, 103 runs (128 balls, 19 fours) came via the bat of captain Dimuth Karunaratne, whose 10th career century had for a long time given his side hope of setting a more competitive target than the 67 they ended with.

However, the home bowlers stuck to their guns and shot out the visitors in 56.5 overs, before Aiden Markram (36) and Dean Elgar (31) chased down the runs in just 13.2 overs – sealing South Africa’s first Test series win in four.

The Proteas, who last won a red-ball series against Pakistan 3-0 at home two years ago, began day three looking to unseat opposition skipper Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella (36).

The pair began proceedings five ahead on 150 for four, with the overnight batsmen initially extending their fifth wicket partnership to 67.

Their stand eventually ended when Karunaratne was late on a pull and ended up skying Nortje to Mulder with the total on 176.

Five runs later and Dickwella’s loose shot saw him fall to Ngidi, with the rest of the line-up unravelling quickly, including Sipamla’s fine bowling to the tail.

Markram and first-innings centurion Elgar wasted little time in chasing down the target, helping the South Africans to a straightforward win.

Proteas squad for the second Betway Test vs Sri Lanka: Quinton de Kock (captain, Momentum Multiply Titans), Temba Bavuma (Imperial Lions), Aiden Markram (Momentum Multiply Titans), Faf du Plessis (Momentum Multiply Titans), Dean Elgar (Momentum Multiply Titans), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Lungi Ngidi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Rassie van der Dussen (Imperial Lions), Anrich Nortje (Warriors), Wiaan Mulder (Imperial Lions), Lutho Sipamla (Imperial Lions).

Wiaan Mulder will be a problem for Pakistan batsmen. He's the type of bowler that can spark a collapse.
