What's new

South Africa end Day 3 of the 1st Test on 187/4 with a lead of 29 runs

Pakistan's pop gun attack has the worst Test bowling average after Zimbabwe since Sep 2019 when Misbah and Waqar took over.

Taking 20 wickets has been very problematic.

Pakistan is about an hour away from going into self-destruction mode. South Africa will be right back in it soon if they don’t do something dumb in the next 15 odd overs.

They fought back well. Really put a price on their wicket & slowly, slowly the pressure starts to shift back to tiring bowlers.

In these conditions a single wicket can become a tumble so they are always vulnerable, but they played it well.

Guys on here complaining about their scoring rate- they have 3 days to play! It's actually a bit of a mental cop out to just go down swinging- it suggests you don't trust your technique & cannot survive. Hit out or get out style.

SA decided that playing strokes would be difficult BUT maybe they feel if they remain mentally tough, bring it into a grind that maybe Pakistan will feel the pressure first & begin to get desperate- then runs can flow.

Good session. Either side can get on top now, in the hour after Tea.

I never understand fan's mentality what u want? Getting 20 wickets in test on day 3?? Come on that's ain't gonna happen.

SA gifted half their wickets in the first innings due to some ordinary shots and a couple of run outs they are grinding down the lead without too much problem and have stroke players waiting to go after tired bowlers.

Abbas is more than handy in these conditions slow low bounce wickets after Yasir he would’ve been most threatening.

I wouldn't say that was poor bowling though. Discipline was maintained. Yasir looked threatening, Babar dropped a catchable one. Shaheen has bowled sharp & threatening all game. Faheem & Nauman kept it very tight. That's what you ask for in a session where if you don't get many wickets, that the bowlers are still creating pressure, keeping control of the game & doing their role- Shaheen & Yasir to threaten, Faheem & Nauman to keep their end tight to support the striker.

If they maintain that, some chances will come & the momentum can build.

I have not seen shaheen reverse the ball in his career so far.
Now would be a good time to start.

This is where hassan needs to earn his place as the reverse swing specialist. He has bowled a lot of dross at 80 mph this test and needs to make it count here.

Thats the problem with shaheen he has limited variations
Can't take the ball away from right hander

And has no nous with the old ball no reverse etc

Atm he is a poor mans mitchell starc

Nauman is being under-bowled here.

Might be time for Hasan Ali to try some reverse too.

Not bowling Noman enough. This is quite poor stuff from Babar

around all rubbish..only 1 thing made sense

Fawad shld have scored 150+ and Faheem 100+ atleast... Faheem was a bit unlucky but then thts something tht needs to b sorted out

Averages 37 with the ball if you remove Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He hasn't kicked on in Test cricket as he has in white ball cricket.

In addition to your points, he's the shortest 6ft 5 bowler ever in that he doesn't really use his height, doesn't hit the pitch hard and lacks an effective bouncer. Nor has he learned the skill of setting up a batsman. His no-balls are becoming a problem too.

In a normal Test side, Shaheen would complement two other experienced seamers. Instead he's leading the bowling attack with such little red ball experience.

Our lower order and tail were batting easily pitch has flattened day 5 should be tougher and we’ll be batting last not good signs need a few wickets quickly.

Need to create pressure on batsmen again so we can take wickets.

Is Yasir's plan to bowl short and rubbish in the post tea session?

Why is this Shaheen Shah pretender bowling overs upon overs??

Give the ball to Noman!

Babar's dropped catch is costing us a lot right now.

We need to bring in spin from both ends, Nauman and Yasir.

If they want to bowl Shaheen, then make him bowl short and attack the bodies because of inconsistent bounce, he's bowling full for no reason.

Need wickets here ASAP.

Take Shaheen off and bowl spin from both ends. Our seamers are absolutely useless.

Poor bowling from Shaheen in this session till now

No gifts this innings from SA and we’ve looked ordinary with the ball.

Dropped catch was probably the only change they gave.

Such a simple change, should have been taken by Babar Azam.

We will be on the receiving end if we don't get rid of Markram and Van Der Dussen.

**** is hitting the fan as we speak
We know how this normally ends.
20 run defeat chasing 170 ish

I am sure you must be praying for this to happen.

I agree, he's been far too full.

Should have bowled short and at the body, because the inconsistent bounce would have surely caused doubts in the batsmen.

SA batsmen are smothering the spin, so the only way to get a wicket is to deceive them in flight, which a finger spinner can do.

Good to see Nauman back.

First 50 of Markram in 5 tests he played in sub continent. Pak bowling developing players for other teams like they have been doing for sometime now. Nothing to take away from Markram but, Pak’s bowling stats for couple of years now show its struggles.

Plenty of batting to come De Kock and Linde won’t be hanging around and defending expect quick runs they are crucial wickets in this innings.

Babar dropped a sitter, we'd have opened up their MO if he had taken that chance.

Disagree, if they tried attacking on this pitch it wouldn't work well. They'd hand us wickets if they just attacked.

Markram and Van der Dussen are defending and playing it nicely.

Ball was reversing a bit when Faheem was bowling, worth giving Hasan a go

They are naturally attacking batsmen don’t think they will come out and defend tired bowlers and a lead will give them confidence.

Very encouraging body language from the South Africans
They can score big if they apply themselves

This toothless and useless bowling attack couldn't take 20 wickets in seamer friendly England and New Zealand, so what are we expecting on flatter wickets ?

Cannot believe we are throwing away a 158 run lead.

Someone take this Shaheen Shah Afridi off the field and bring in the replacement fielder, the guy has switched off completely from up top!

We need drinks urgently, these guys are losing the plot big time.
