ONly Bavuma in the 2nd dig, Washi in both innings, KL Rahul in first innings, Jadeja somewhat looked to have any sort of control. Everyone else looked out of depth. So it comes down to captaincy.

Bavuma's captaincy >>> Pant's captaincy. HIs field sets were terrific. Pant had so many open spaces , started with the worst bowler possible Axar instead of Bumrah or Siraj or Kuldeep. I don’t understand this weird fascination with preparing extreme pitches that crumble so fast. Not sure what Gambhir is thinking, but if he didn’t learn his lesson from the NZ Tests then he is not a good coach. This young team drew the series in England on good pitches, so they are good enough already. Playing on extreme spinning pitches makes the contest a bit of a coin flip. India doesn’t play spin as well as they used to, not any more, but they are good enough to compete with the best on regular pitches. Gambhir is squandering the home advantage with his stupid pitch shenanigans.

Pant is one of the worst captain going around. He si one of the under-rated reason why INdia lost first Test.

iirc Pant drew level a T20I series as a captain vs South Africa in 2022 in India after being 0-2 down.

He was going to next captain until that unfortunate accident.

Bumrah had a back injury after playing 5 consecutive test matches in Australia. Hence that precaution of playing only 3 out of 5 in England.

He has missed only 3 ODIs in Australia since.

He is fit again & would have led this test team in this WTC cycle.

Getting captaincy free inspite of being a flat track bully is an issue. Getting T20 captaincy free & getting Samson's spot in the T20 team inspite of being average in T20Is is an issue with many Indian fans.

He could have easily come out to bat in this test but for a timid coward like him, he conveniently chose not to now that he has got everything free.
