England are bowling well, quite tight. They need at least one wicket before the close of play though or else they'll be relying on an almighty SA collapse tomorrow.

Yep they need to make this pressure count now, Prince is under pressure and looking on edge.

S.A need to look to bat once here and bat big and try and get 400+ and put pressure even more on england!

England has the same fighting power in this squad which we had once in 1990's.

Great going England , Collingwood you are the man!

What he said. Still chance of rain or preferably a comeback, I want to say we won the series properly.

IMO we are one of the mentally strongest sides, we just had one of those shocking days where we play badly and nothing goes right. which SA might have tomorrow or in their 4th innings run case if we push them that far :))

The groundman said that the pitch will get flatter as the match progresses and thats why I was surprised at Strauss decision to bat first

What a day for South Africa.

South Africa well on top.

Strange decision by Strauss to bat first.

people had questioned Ponting's decision to bat first at Sydney. His reasoning was that you back yourself to score more in the 1st innings than the opposition in the 4th innings. If South Africa are faced with a chase of around 200 to win the game and tie the series, it could get really interesting. from their perspective, they need to kill this game in their 1st innings i.e. make sure they don't bat again in this Test.

In helpful conditions, the bowling has been superb thus far, but only one reward. Come on!

Kind of sounds like Steyn in the last test!!!! Superb, but no luck!!!!

Helpful conditions or not South Africa are on top.

Boundaries coming at will for Smith and Amla.

They have played well considering that the ball has been moving around.

105-1

Smith 51*
Amla 31* off just 42 balls

Game is slipping away, nothing going our way but SA have played well

Smith on fire.

Two boundaries in this over from Swann.

115-1

Smith 60*
Amla 31*

Well apparently Smith had a let off when he was on 15.

15.6 Sidebottom to Smith, no run, width, and that's a massive appeal! I'm sure there was a noise, and the England fielders are adamant. But they've had to call for a review. Smith climbed into a wild cut, but that's been given not out by umpire Harper, who apparently says he could not hear a noise. Well, that was the only evidence that could have given the decision! Big moment, and conceivably a let-off

Now he is coasting along on 71.

Smith and Amla batting well.

Strauss decision to bat first has really backfired

141-1

Smith has raced along

Smith 81*
Amla 36*

Just 39 runs behind.

Complete shambles. I'm glad I have work today because I can't take much more of this.

^^

I know how you feel. Waking up and checking the score. Realising Pakistan have flopped it again.

The only good thing was that I didn't watch it.

Only issue in this game is that it going to rain again today and nearly every after noon this test. South Africa need to bat quickly to try get 200+ ahead by tomorrow lunch.

Rain predictions around tea on all five days.

Proteas batting at a good rate, they should win this test unless they start choking again

From Cricinfo:

"Hey miller, I find you very funny. Will you marry my sister, please?" says Vinod Gupte, and he's so serious, he even repeats the invitation with a capital M for Miller.

:)))

It's no laughing matter, we've already lost one ball-by-baller to a cyber-proposal - remember the redoubtable Jenny Roesler (nee Thompson)? Thanks Vinod, but I am already claimed by the lovely Sarah, so I shall have to decline.

Vinod has lost the plot.

Captain my Captain!!!!! Well played sir!!!!! Beautifully played century!!!!!

Brilliant century from Smith under difficult batting conditions.

Rain stops play. It's really belting down. With more rain predicted during the next 3 days , England may just be lucky to get away

you'd think with england's constant raindance, safrica would try scoring a bit quicker in an attempt to try and force a result

especially with rain forecast for the next 3 days, S.A will need to score quicker but it's not an easy wicket to bat on.

The sun is shining, the covers are off and South soon to pile on the runs. Hope Amla gets his hundred before close of play

England have been utterly dire in this test, although with the weather likely to keep assisting the bowlers and the onus on the SA batsmen to score quickly, we have been given a thoroughly undeserved lifeline for day 3, the same one we found ourselves with this morning - a chance of having a mad session where wickets tumble under the cloud cover. Later in the game, if enough overs get lost to rain and bad light, then England will again have to bat well for a long time to save the game. The game is far from over.

I've got a funny feeling that England have someone in the sky that likes them at the moment, with the 2 narrow escapes with one wicket left and all, like it's written that we're going to win this series. We will find out if that's true over the next few days. I hope we get away with this one.

Amla and kallis gone early on day 3.

223/4 now and england back in game slightly.

Duminy gone too. And guess who was the bowler?

Graeme Swann with his 1st ball of his new spell.

Well well England have taken 3 wickets this morning,

South Africa lead by just 60 runs.

240-5

Swann getting massive turn.

He has taken a wicket 15 times in his first over. Astonishing.

Impressive crowd for the match...making a lot of noise too!

South Africa declared on 423-7

De Villiers made 58

Boucher made an aggressive 95

England in trouble at 48-3

South Africa could wrap this up tomorrow.

With the dismissal of Strauss the test match looks dead and buried. Going into day four with Strauss and Pietersen at the wicket would have allowed the fans to maintain at least a shred of optimism. Now, England can only cling to the fact that Pietersen, Collingwood and Bell are all capable of solid 2nd innings partnerships or even centuries. If we lose, I would at least like to see a high price on every wicket and a fight to the end. It's the much-vaunted top four that has consistently failed with low scores and poor dismissals, and yet again today. the no.3 position is supposed to feature the best and most adaptable player, and Trott does not look like a no.3. Once again, our hopes rest largely with an little industrious ginger, the Durham all-rounder.

England are 195 behind. If they want to win, they need to split the day into segments. Their first target should be to extinguish the 195. Putting aside the fact that I think we'll lose by an innings, for the first time in history, an England side bats all the way down; everyone in the side averages forty apart from the last pair. If they somehow get to parity with 4 or more wickets left, then maybe, just maybe, there is a chance...

Therefore, the only way for England to escape would be to somehow muster 400 all out or more, and to subsequently force a 4th innings collapse. However, I don't believe our batting or bowling lineups respectively are capable of either, on current form. Unless we get a few cloudbursts, this is South Africa's game.

TMS do not expect Pietersen to last the morning, nor England the day. Kinda got a point. Fantastic to hear the England fans still absolutely belting out 'Jerusalem', by far world cricket's best fans.

Good solid positive start from England. SA look nervous. I can barely watch though, so tense.

Agreed - though the Aussies during our tour Down Under have been excellent too. Not sure why the English cricket fans are so much better than the English football supporters!

Yeah we love the Aussies too.

Interesting partnership developing here...Collingwood is going for it and Pietersen is solidly defending at the other end, and it's working...I don't even dare mention Headingley '81

KP seals a poor series with another low score, the shot of a man out of form. with that probably goes the game.

Couldn't happen to a nice bloke really. :D

Collingwood is playing amazing, he really can produce any kind of innings...

Bell gone, 140 behind. We'll do well to make them bat again.

Prior gone hooking second ball. I want to be sick. So rubbish.

Boycott accusing the English batsmen of being mentally ill. LOL.

Boycott is a legend. Now I will be interested to see what he thinks of the current Pakistan test team.

i am a massive collingwood fan and i want him to score a century and save england!

the way he is playing , he just needs some support from other end. I am sure he will get a century.

Now it needs to be a Nagpur-style comeback with Collingwood making 150 and shepherding the tail. Not likely.

Collingwood is one of the only English batsmen that consistently does well overseas. He has emerged from most of the tours since 2005 (most of them dire for everyone else) hugely in credit, and again here.

Collingwood is an under-rated player.

He scores important runs at crucial times.

Top player. A player who performs when the pressure is on.

Broad gone.

Morkel with yet another wicket.

It hit his glove. Broad stood there nodding his head. Umpire didn't give it.

SA ask for the review. Decision over-turned.

Cheerio Broad. Gloves down the leg side and looks aggrieved to be removed by the review system. big LOL. I don't mind losing by an innings in this session if we have a bit of comedy.

who has actually had a good series with the bat? Collingwood, Bell and Swann? pile of poo. lucky to tie the series.

Morkel has now taken 3 for 0 in 7 balls. Steyn and Morkel are the world's best bowlers.

Swann and Colly for a matchwinning partnership of 300 and SA to collapse for 80. I know where my money is.

We haven't seen much of McLaren, but Parnell looks a great prospect.

Steyn is, Morkel potentially is. Looks like the time out of the side has fired Morkel up.

IMO the best are:

Steyn
Asif
Big gap........
Johnson

Another great fighting innings from Collingwood, the perfect man at number 5. 53 not out

Good innings from Collingwood.

Swann edges.

Prince with a good effort at gully.

Whippy - I suggest you change your avatar. Replace KP with Collingwood. :D

I've had this avatar for years. I need to stick with my top man, I'm not a glory supporter :D

Heard them all, been defending him since 2005. Permanent tinted spectacles I'm afraid, then again I am like that with every England player.

Swann is having some fun, why not. ha.
