The 13th edition of South Asian Games will officially kick off tomorrow after the opening ceremony at Dasharath Stadium.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will declare the Games open at the three-hour programme, which will showcase the rich culture and diversity of Nepal at the newly reconstructed stadium.

Nepal is hosting the regional sporting extravaganza for the third time from December 1 to 10 in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur. Nepal is the birthplace of the regional meet. It started under the banner of South Asian Federation Games in 1984 and returned for the second time in 1999.

According to the Secretary of Ceremony Committee Kul Bahadur Gurung, around 8,000 artistes and performers will light up the stadium in the opening ceremony, which will begin with a three-minute laser light presentation on the 13th SA Games. Athletes and officials will then take part in a march-past with Olympian weightlifter Kamal Bahadur Adhikari bearing the national flag of Nepal.

After two-minutes of torch relay, SAOC flag will be taken to the march-past before it is hoisted. Four-time South Asian gold medallist and Olympian taekwondo athlete Deepak Bista will light the flame after a torch relay from Olympians Baikuntha Manandhar, Rajendra Bhandari, Nayana Shakya, Umesh Maskey and Debu Thapa.

Taekwondo player Ayasha Shakya will then take oath on behalf of athletes, while international badminton referee Deepak Thapa will do so on behalf of all the judges and referees. The opening ceremony will also feature SA Games song from renowned singers Kunti Moktan, Ananda Karki, Satya Raj Acharya and Indira Joshi among others, while Nepal APF performers will display the names of the seven participating nations through mass callisthenics.

Apart from using lights and digital display, the Ceremony Committee will also display a show of drones over the stadium. The ceremony will end with 20 minutes of fireworks in and around the stadium

More than 5,000 delegates, including 2,715 athletes, are participating in the regional meet that features 26 sports disciplines. Nepal is fielding the highest number of athletes — 596 — in all 26 sports disciplines. According to the Technical Committee, the SA Games powerhouse, India, has sent 487 athletes in 22 disciplines, while Sri Lanka has entered 564 athletes in 26 disciplines. Likewise, Bangladesh has sent 470 athletes in 25 disciplines, while Pakistan has registered 263 athletes in 18 sports. Bhutan (116) and Maldives (216) are taking part in 18 and 12 disciplines respectively.

The Games will offer a total of 1,115 medals — 317 gold, 317 silver and 481 bronze — with swimming being at the top with 38 gold medals. Athletics is offering 36 gold medals, while taekwondo is offering 29. Out of the 27 sports disciplines included in the SA Games, paragliding was cancelled after the sport failed to get minimum of three teams.

Chairman of the main organising committee and Minister of Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Sunar, President of South Asian Olympic Council and Nepal Olympic Committee Jeevan Ram Shrestha and National Sports Council Member Secretary and SAG Executive Committee Chairman Ramesh Kumar Silwal will address the gathering.

The volleybally tournament started before the offical ceremony and we have the final match up which will be between India and Pakistan

Nepali bowler

Anjali Chand creates history

The bowler took figures of
6 wickets and 0 runs

As Maldives was bowled all out for 16 runs

Forgot to mention the bowler that took the wickets is from the women's team of Nepal

Congratz to India men's volleyball team on winning gold and beating Pakistan

Currently Pakistan has a total of 27 medals 4 gold 11 silver and 12 bronze

Sri Lanka currently has the most medals in total at 46

Nepal have the most gold medals currently which they have 23 so far

This is a joke of event. 7 countries out of which except IND rest all are poor in majority sports should not be competing with each other. I mean 7 countries would mean you can't even q/f of any team sport

India isn't a world class sporting nation either they improved a lot in their sports but their no were near top level of the world

Watch the asian games or commonwealth games instead, no need to whine about it:yk2

Lmao so soumya friggin sarkar playing against Maldives in SA games!! He played in the emerging Asia cup too. Fully expect BD to play him against Bhutan under14 next year. Shoaib88 aab isse school cricket khilaoge kya?

Isn't it shameful for you that a cricketer playing against Maldives almost beat you in nidhas trophy final?

LOL Nepal a country which is 50 times smaller than India in populations and 100 times smaller in Economy has the same amount of gold medal!!! This is outrageous and Indians should be raising serious questions that despite so much hoolla gulla over investments in sports, this is the result!!!

I don't remember lallu panju tournaments wins man, but we did beat SL and BD like half dozen times with second string team, didn't we? Now I agree having a close match with BD is pretty shameful by our standards though.

We generally sent our 5th-6th string contingent for such low level games. Check out our record compared to other South Asian country in Asian or Commonwealth games. For example last Asian games we won like 70 medals in total now guess how many BD won? Yes a big fat 0. Now this is shameful even for a athletically challenged nation like BD.

Or maybe you should be ashamed for being so ignorant when you know the results of Asian,CWG against the same countries.
Since 2002 performance in CWG, India has been concentrating much more on those games.

India has sent its University athletes in most disciplines here. If you see the medal tally in recent CWG and Asian Games you would know better. We are no sporting power but here you have missed the mark by a long way.

Our resident mathematician thinks sports achievements should always be proportionate to a nation's population, any less than that is really shameful. Now since Nepal has more than 7 times more golds despite BD having 6 times larger population, wondering how 'Sharamful' it must be for brother Shoaib88!!

So what is the point of these games? Do they qualify for Asian Games or Olympics? if not then I don't really care about it.

Daughter of imam masjid asra won a bronze medal in 400meters event

Current India Sri Lanka and Nepal have more medal than Pakistan ( in total) and even in gold medals as well

To think their was a time when Pakistan would be a head of Nepal and Sri Lanka in medal counts

Regardless Congratz to Nepal and Sri Lanka athletes for performing well

India is miles ahead of everyone in south asia which can be seen that they are way ahead even with second and third string teams.
Pakistan to be honest is performing much better than expected when you consider the fact that all the athletes were given a 10 day camp for this event which is a joke compared to over 6 month camps for all the other nations. As for nepals performance it is safe to say that it is skewed as they are the hosts...they won 3 golds last time and will probably win around 50 this time which is proof of that. Plus they manipulated the events in a comical way...i mean they have age categories in taekwondo events....under 23, under 26, under 29 and so on, which i have never seen at a multi sporting event ever. As for Srilanka they have been finishing above us for a while now. But i still believe Pakistan is ahead of both these nations as almost 80-90% of srilanks golds come from just the 2 sports of Athletics and Swimming while Pakistan almost always has lead in multiple sports. If invested in the correct way Pakistan can easily win twice the medals that they are winning currently.

India is not participating in Taekwondo, Karate and Archery (India has a few world top 5 archers) due to different reasons. Nepal and Pakistan has won most Golds in these three games.

Taekwondo has 29 Golds here, when even Olympics has just 8. LOL

I have never seen these games, but i am presuming that china does not participate?
If so, then i am presuming that these athletes who do participate are probablly some of the worst athletes globally, when you compare to US,
china, russia, european, african, south american.and australian athletes?

Is China in South Asia?

I am assuming you have the flexibility of a Chinese, endurance of an African, skills of a South American, outdoor attitude of an Australian and Technical brilliance of a European/American. What do you do when not breaking world records in High jump, marathon, 100m, weightlifting and Gymnastics; all on the same day.

India did participate in Taekwondo and Pakistan has no medal let alone Gold from Archery

Congratz to Arshad Nadeem in winning gold in saf games and qualifying directly for Olympics

my bad, India participated in Taekwondo and did average.
In archery, BD won all gold medals in India’s absence. Surprisingly, Pakistan does not seem
to have competitive archery culture. it didn’t participate.

KATHMANDU: Pakistan’s squash outfit added another feather to their cap as they claimed gold medal in the team event of the 13th South Asian Games in Kathmandu when they outclassed traditional rivals India in the final on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s squash players showed a stunning performance to emerge victorious in the team event final.
