South Indian Cinema and Songs

Kali - Part drama, part thriller and yet another brilliant performance from Dulquer (+ that lorry dude in the second half was creepy as hell).

Due to some issue I didn't get tickets yet Kaayal,I'm guessing most are in same boat as me.

kaayal just opened my fb and everyone had a review most non-fans said it was a good one time watch, fans loved it but a lot of them said it was a sentimental slow movie :/ not sure what Rajni is doing in that?

My friends told me the story is not good. So not gonna watch it.:22:

Was just asking the review man. If it was good, i would have watched it from Kerala.

Didn't hear good reviews. Apparently it's a sentimental movie, it's directed by Ranjith (who directed "Madras", which was a senti movie as well but very good one), but Rajnikanth and sentiment don't go together:narine

Watched it in the evening show here in my town, yesterday. This was such a bore fest with clueless disjointed screenplay. Clever marketing ploy employed by crooked Thaanu before release may given the film some early boost but i don't expect this to run full houses post Monday. People around me were cheering and dancing for first 10 mins then came the dead silence for the remaining run time with occasional bickering and jeering towards what they are seeing on the screen. I felt this was neither a Rajni film nor a Ranjith film. A very confused mess with a mediocre script, and awful songs that left nothing but a sour taste within 15 mints of its running time.

I guess Linga, Kochadaiyaan's fate awaits Kabaali.

"Oppam" new movie by Mohanlal and Priyadarshan. It's about a blind man witnessing a murder ,later for which he's been framed for.The film is actually about his efforts to find the real culprit to prove his innocence.:)

Nice premise and my favt actor (Lalettan) and director (Priayn) are in it but disappointed with the below par discordant edit for a trailer and that god-awful BGM.

Our makers can learn a thing or two from Bollywood when it comes to presenting sleek looking trailers (even if the content of the film may not match with the trailer).

I thought the editing was good compared to other malayalam trailers. This trailer was edited by Alphonse Puthren, the Premam director.

Edit coming from Alphonse (a very talented filmmaker) that's even more shocking for me. Shots were too close (kinda cropped too much on all sides) and having disjointed feel to the narration plus the jarring score.

I went on a vacation past weekend with my friends, couldn't get to see it. I heard it sucks big time lol.

Well, I'll use this place to promote Mammootty's movies coz he's my fav actor(he doesn't need to as his acting prowess was well known)
IgnitedMind, you are a kannadite, yeah? did you watch Shikhari movie. It was got very positive reviews in kannada version while negative reviews in malayalam version (though I liked it very much). Only negative points in kannada version was his dubbing, ie Delhi based man speaking malayalam accent kannada!
So how's his dubbing? Is it out of sync?

Was watching some of Mammootty's old tamil movies, so thinks to write little bit about those movies.

Kilipechu Ketkava: YouTube | Wiki
It has horror elements in it, but no horror shows! It was a beautiful romantic comedy movie, with some beautiful song and little bit dancing move by Mammootty* (which was his only one negative point, he can't dance). Worth watching, was very very good movie, it has all, comedy song fights emotions etc. highly recommended!!

Film starts Hero as a thief, got released from jail, got a lover and she send him to a job as a drama player, and he's trapped there and cost lives of CM's and CM's wife unintentionally. So he ran off, escaped in a lorry, which was crashed later but Hero was survived and the lorry carries huge amount of black money. Hero comebacks later with his lover and friend and took all those money.
So in the terms of whitening money, he creates a political party and become CM. He started as corrupted politic leader. Due to his lover request he makes lovers friend as PA. She later trapped him and was forced to marry her (by lying he raped her while he was drunk a lot but Hero can't remember it). She later reveals that she was the daughter of ex CM (who died earlier) and she blames him for her parents death. So she marry him to take revenge.
Meantime one of his followers commit suicide coz his rivals party mocking their CM. From that moment he becomes a good man and want to do good for people, which irritates bad people's. So they conspired against him which cost 1000s of peoples lives and blames goes to CM's shoulder with the helps of his wife.
Angered by this people's want CM go away. Governor was set to displace him and announce new CM, by that time he reaches there (at that time his ex lover was there in crowd and people's stoned her away). He killed all 3 villains while revealing truths behind bad things happened (including ex CM's death and his wife sees his innocent there). He got people's applause back but was found his ex lover was dead in road by people's anger.
Film first half was comedy and in second half it got serious. Though film was very good feels lags bit also climax lacks originality, may be due to lack of technology back in the days. Worth watching though.

I feel it needs separate post

It was superb family movie. It has good cast list including Mammootty, Murali, Abbas, Devayani, Rambha, Sneha , Srividya, Vijayakumar, Sashikumar Subramani, Delhi Gangs etc.
Mammootty was at its absolute brilliant in his vallyettan (elder brother) role as usual. Everyone did fantastic job there.
It'll be a sure miss if you didn't watch this one. Highly emotional family drama, recommended.

Fun Fact: Devayani was Mammootty's heroine in this film (She also paired with him in some other movies too). All mentioned actresses was paired with him as his heroine one or another movies. Like Srividya in Poomukhapadiyil Ninneyum Kaath, Rambha in Chronic Bachelor and Sneha in Thuruppugulan and Pramani etc.

Maru Malarchi, Arasiyal, Karmegham etc was next in my wish list.
""""

Meena, in her days was acted with all south indian super stars. In Mammootty's case she acted as his daughter, then as wife, then as Mom (next will be as his grand mom ;) ). Don't think any other one has such claims.

Other one I want to watch is
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar: The Untold Truth : YouTube | Wiki .
Though it was released in 2000 it was yet to televise even once most of the states (it was dubbed in 9 languages). Such a dishonour to a great man :afaq

Any Idea why it wasn't televised? cricketjoshila?

For all the criticism Congress gets and rightly so,their track record on Freedom of speech and allowing criticism is way better than BJP and their fans in last 2 years or even Jan Sangh during 1978-1980.

The black mark obviously is 1975 emergency.

Freedom of speech? You have no idea how congress controlled the media and how only what they wanted was reported by the media.Congress cultivated their own people in media and controlled the media. Those who refused were persecuted.

Even now you see congress cultivated media working for them.Radia tapes being an example.

And Jan Sangh wasnt in power in 1978-80.It was Janta Party.

My bad on Jan Sangh, yes they did cultivate media and still do but BJP is openly using regressive policies espl with censorship which they don't seem to care, its become a pain to watch a movie in cinema, questioning BJP without being questioned back about being called Congressi, there seems to be no middle ground with their MPs one dumber than the other, agreed though i would still vote for them because i prefer Capitalism but they need to turn it down a notch.

1.Totally agree that BJP has put up a idiot as censor board chief.Bad decision. But INC led CBFC did the same. They banned a classic movie Aandhi.

2.The fault lines have clearly appeared in India. The family just cant accpet that they have lost power and that the party is in dumps. They started a lot of attacks via their cultivated people in media in "intelligensia" in "civil society" so its easy to be mistaken to be one of them.Dont say its the right thing. But if the family and party had accepted defeat as a democratic organisation and behaved accordingly this wouldnot have happened.

Do you know the date of the sanction and funding?

Don't know.
This one may helpful https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Babasaheb_Ambedkar_(film)
In 1989, Dr Patel was approached by the Films Division to make a documentary on Ambedkar.
..........
The director happened to be sitting next to Mrinal Gore and told her about his plans. When it was Ms Gore's turn to speak, she mooted the idea of a feature film on the Dalit messiah. The then Chief Minister Sharad Pawar sanctioned Rs 10 million for the project and the Centre five crore.

That's a very good film of his.

You must have obviously watched Siraichalai in malayalam.

Kalapani? Yes I watched that. and I considers that was one of his best film. Somehow missed Iruvar, thinking it was a slow paced movie. kinda reluctant towards Vanaprastham though.

on a side note, it was Mammootty who got offers in iruvar first place (don't know which role, thinks Prakash Raj's one). Somehow his almost all rejects becomes blockbusters in industry. even his award winning movies like Vadakkan Veeragatha and Ambedkar, he rejects those offers too first time lol.
So good number of Actors should be thankful to him :yk

Oh okay, I heard Aravind Swamy got an offer for the same role as well. I think he gave the voice for Prakash Raj though, not sure.

Nope. It was Prakash raj's own voice.

Arvind swamy was did considered for a role (according to wiki he recorded two poems) but somehow left out in the overall scheme of things.

Yeah apparently it was for two poems. Was telling in an interview once.

cricketjoshila . Is there a Hindi dubbed version for Malayalam Movie "LUCIA".
Or Even English subtitles ?

And Govindudu Andarivadele?

That's a kannada movie bro. Not malayalam.

Yes Kannada. Pardon.
I have been looking for dubbed version for months now. Although similar search for Son of Satyamurthy was disappointing once it arrived but Lucid Dream is the genre that fascinates me most.

Thivagar, Dwayne Bravo is gonna marry actress Shreya. This is the talk of the tinsel town doing the rounds these days.:narine

Jacobinte Swargarajyam (Jacob's kingdom of heaven ). Nice family movie and a beautiful song by Unni Menon.

Saw the telugu premam

As a person who say malayalam one, loved it so much that I have watched it atleast 5 to 6 times.

Telugu premam was not bad..it was just different. Malayalam one was poetic...telugu one was more funny.

As one reviewer said...Premam in malayalam was an emotion...The telugu one was fun cinema.

Not bad !

I like the way madrasi film industries copy and repackage each others movies to suit their particular madrasi tastes.

Lol saw memes making fun of Shruthi Hassan for her role as Malar in that film. Don't know how true it is..

I don't like Shruthi but i feel bad for her now. Poor girl can't act and she has been crucified by Malayalis and Tamils for being malar.

One has got to give her credit though she and Katrina take haters head on and laugh their way to the bank.

How is his acting skills ? Did you watch any of his movies ?

Mokka payyan right ?

I have a soft spot for Sreesanth.:shakib

Despite all his antics and whatever he did, he had a very good outswinger and made Kallis look disturbed with his spell once in South Africa and won a match there. Idiot spoiled his own career, he could have had a decent to good career for India atleast in test cricket. But anyway, just like in cricket, he looks to be having an eventful career post cricket.:narine

Hooked up to this mash up cover from this brother & sister duo since morning. Ignore the video just hear the song.:)

Well they're already going viral..

Btw the original song starring Nivin Pauly & Nazriya is from a film or an album?

Album song- Yuvvh. Directed by Alphonse Puthren (Premam director).

So an album it is. Good to see albums coming out starring leading actors as well. Here the culture is non existent. Only hip hop tamizhan releases albums from time to time.

These kind of songs are very rare tbh. Here is a different album by actor Mamukoya and Haris saleem. Not a song really.

There is another one by the same gang about Rohith Vemula.

I have no soft spot for the guy. No control whatsoever and used to get smashed all over. Also was never focussed on his game and partied way too much. Some of our cricketers should remember that they are elite sportsmen representing India in international cricket and should stay away from late nights/alcohol etc. to keep themselves in top condition.

Finally watched Danush's Thodari, the movie isn't bad as everyone said. It is a very good movie. Saw a Danush of 2004-2006 here, brought back nostalgia. What's up with stupid Malayalee-Tamil Beef in the film ? Unnecessary and stupid. Exposes how dumb and racist Tamils are.

There has been a lot of stereotyping in Indian movies imo in Tamil I see the "marwari" businessman as a greedy lad,"Laxmi" as the nice and polite Tam Bram girl whose does bharatnatyam and every Sikh as "Singh"(which is ok considering Singh means lion) and so on.

In bollywood they always show South Indians with weird hindi accents although "2 states" movie tried to make an effort but no girl dresses in Mylapore dresses like Alia bhatt.

Tamil movies are really bad nowadays everyone is just waiting for robot 2.0

There is no beef between Malayalees and Tamilians,it was probably only shown in the movie.

LOL at Marwaris, seeing a Marwari as a "Settu" never gets old, has been happening as long as I can remember. I remember a Punjabi actor playing a villain role in a Tamil Devayani serial(Kolangal?) LOL. Everyone in his family spoke pure Tamil but this guy for some reason had a thick North Indian accent and no one gave a darn about it. What is up with villains being all North Indian and Telugu now a days . The Telugu villains are the worst, they always look like clowns and not sure why the directors feel that villain needs to appear as an outsider. I never even knew that Lungi Dance song was supposed sound like a Tamil kuthu song. I don't know how the likes of Vishal can get away by talking about being dark skinned but every actor he ropes in are light skinned actors and not only that he goes on to make fun of female characters that are fat, skinny and dark as well.

I can't see Robot 2.0 being any better than Endhiran, I didn't even like Endhiran that much but I remember being very hyped about it and I can't believe its been 6 years. Movies that came out that year like VTV and Aayriathil Oruvan and Raavanan were much more better. Rajni is too old, he should just shut up and retire. What is Kamal up to now a days ? I heard he ditched Gowthami again ? What is happening to his Dasavadharam 2.0 ? Saw Vijay's Bairava and I gave my self the biggest facepalm ever. For some reason I wasn't interested in watching Kodi or Kashmora in theatre, my friends and I were still recovering after watching Remo. I may watch Chennai 28.

There was a slight beef between Malayalees and Tamil over a Dam that was built and issue regarding Kerala(Malayalee's state) not opening up water for Tamil Nadu. It lasted for a bit, it may have been at prime when this movie was being filmed. Tamil movie directors like bringing actors from others states to play the villain role to make it more attractive to the local population for some reason.

Funny thing is, each of the 4 main South states (Andhra/Telangana, TN, Karnataka & Kerala ) have stereotypes of all the other 3 which comes out in the movies a lot . Some are funny , some dumb and some downright racist. People put them in to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Especially when there is a major political issue going on between them (eg. Mullaperiyar b/w Kerala - TamilNadu or Kaveri b/w Karnataka - TN ), the filmmakers latch on to them, just to get some more seats in the thetatre. Pretty stupid to be honest. It creates so many pre-conceived notions among people.
Even when we are bound together by a common dravidan culture, many idiots find the need to one-up on each other just to stroke their egos.

Yeah. hadn't seen the 1st part though. But had my Tamil friends explain the connections to the old film while watching .
This movie is okay. Funny & Entertaining. Story is kinda typical Tamil masala fare spiced up with liberal doses of skin show & misogyny .. Cricketing movies are always rare down south though.. Really gives an insight into the Cricketing culture around Chennai & the club cricket scene.. 6.5/10

Boring. The first half was decent but the 2nd half dragged on and on and it looked like they were trying too hard to be funny at times. Was nothing like the first part which was much more natural and hilarious. Siva is a bit funny with his subtle humour in the film.

Watched a series of malayalam films over the christmas weekend

1) Monsoon mangoes (my favt of the lot)

A very interesting attempt (a film noir style black comedy) with an excellent performance from the genius that is Fahad (looking forward to his tamil debut as anatagonist in upcoming Siva karthikeyan film).

2) Oozham (a below par revenge drama with okish performance from Prithvi)

Starts of intensely but after somepoint in the first half, dives into a masala trash with illogical screenplay and characters.

3) Pretham (kinda horror comedy from Jayasurya)

Just above average (not much horror in it and the poor ending ruined the build-up), liked the performance of Jayasurya (seems to be getting better in his choices of films, these days).

4) Vellimoonga (a rewatch)

A fantastic comedy film with very likeable performance from Biju menon (Sundar C butchered this nice flick with his crude/half-baked attempt called "muththina kathrikkai").

Interesting. The 1st one was very funny, subtle and the characters were all unique. The matches they played were actually pretty interesting. Does the doctor son and his crew who beat the Sharks in the first one show up again ? I was hoping that they'd make their come back lol.
