Cape Town will be hit by a massive storm tomorrow. It will be almost twice as powerful as the one that hit us 30 years ago. The one 30 years ago absolutely devasted our city

All schools, universities and colleges will be shut down tomorrow.
Many companies have given their staff a day off tomorrow
All flights to and from cape Town will be stopped tomorrow.
People are warned not to go close to the beaches

Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Waleed Parnell are currently living in Cape Town.
I am sure that their minds will be on the safety of their family at home.

In South Africa is called a Tropical cyclone. I think that in the USA is called a hurricane

May Allah(swt) keep them safe. Is that a recent picture?

The picture is of a storm we had 3 years ago. Tomorrows storm will be very much larger and stronger

Isn't that hilly area? I have seen few videos of Cape Town, it looks safe as long as people don't live along the coast.

Most people in Cape Town live close to the coast. My home is just one street away from the beach

Hopefully it does not come to a stage where the homes are devastated, feel sorry for all the people who's homes will be destroyed; efficient evacuation is the important thing now

The areas on the east and west look really vulnerable. It will be hard for them to rebuild back in such a poor country. Follow the guidelines and stay safe.

Didn't you open a thread just a couple of weeks ago how all the faiths came together to pray for rain?

Seems like the prayer might have been heard loud and clear :srt

Among all these disturbances , I find the name Typhoon the coolest.Cyclone sounds like something an Indian nerd came up with.

Well, its the other way around, "Typhoon" has desi origins.

The Oxford English Dictionary[6] cites Urdu ṭūfān and Chinese tai fung giving rise to several early forms in English. The earliest forms -- "touffon", later "tufan", "tuffon", and others -- derive from Urdu ṭūfān, with citations as early as 1588. From 1699 appears "tuffoon", later "tiffoon", derived from Chinese with spelling influenced by the older Urdu-derived forms. The modern spelling "typhoon" dates to 1820, preceded by "tay-fun" in 1771 and "ty-foong", all derived from the Chinese tai fung.

Cyclone was coined by a a Brit studying tropical storms in Calcutta .

Henry Piddington published almost 40 papers dealing with tropical storms from Calcutta between 1835 and 1855 in The Journal of the Asiatic Society. He also coined the term cyclone, meaning the coil of a snake.

How's it looking?

The storm just started hitting us now.

The storm knocked off several roofs, thousand of trees are uprootd and cars are simply being blown away

Just outside Cape Town massive massive lighting just before the storm caused major fires which cannot be controlled in cyclone condition

Pathetic comment.

Hope everyone including OP stay safe. I read on the news this could be very devastating for many people in Cape Town.

Lots of prayers coming your way. Stay safe and hope there isn't any loss of life.

TahirFan Is it over ? What's the damage estimate ? Hopefully people were evacuated on time ..
