What's new

Sri Lanka [154 & 197/2] beat South Africa [222 & 128] by 8 wkt in 2nd Test, seal historic series win

Apart from OZ nobody has won 5 tests in a row against SA. Ii am not even sure if oz did it. May be before their return

I think it would be excellent shake up for world cricket if SL could pull off a series win here.

I didnt expect them to chase 300 in last test!

184 ahead & 9 down . Last 4 innings is the poorest batting i have ever seen from Saffers , either away or home .

We all saw how "good" SL'S bowling was in the AUS test series. I can't believe they're on route in becoming the first asian team to win a test series in SA.

De Silva with a s/r of 120 & avg of 80 before this Test is picking wickets at will . Most inept batting against a very ordinary bowling attack .

What an interesting passage of test cricket over the last 6 months

1 Wicket needed, 187 lead.

Exciting end to game i can see now.

Different conditions, Unless you have express pace you usually fail in Australia, in SA, Eng and NZ - seamers and swing bowlers are more prevalent.

SL showing India and especially Pakistan how to play in SA, Pakistan should hang their heads in shame

Cmon SL!!! :aag:

Wow with one main bowler less they rolled them over under 150.Good luck SL. Pull it off well deserved series win is not far away.

Not sure AB would lose his wicket to part timers like this. Anyway Lakmal Visws Rajitha combination is too good for SA. Pakistan bowling was not penetrative. They have more of ODI bowling unit than Test bowling

SRL has a wonderful chance to win this Test & Series - this is after losing their prime spinner for almost entire game. With that bowler, SRL probably would have chased around 125 here. Another great day coming tomorrow - Lankans need to end the day max 2 down.

Olivier's pace is really down this series. Looks like he is winded after the Pakistan series. It is draining to bowl short regularly. Although I recall reading Imran's biography where he said bowling a yorker at pace is more draining physically, since you are not relying on the pitch for anything.

SA is finally about to be breached!!! Go Lankans!! Would be a stunning result!

Srilnkan managment must be top class, their direction is spot on,no bits and pieces players.Gotta love it.

Even if Sri Lanka go on to lose this game, they've proved themselves as the second best Asian test side with not only how they've performed in this series but also with the whitewash against Pakistan.

The same England side that whitewashed Sri Lanka would beat Pakistan in UAE without any doubt in my mind and I wouldn't put it past them to beat us in every test.

This South African team is **** poor. Pakistan made them look way better than they actually are.

Sri Lanka currently 60/2 and require 137 runs to win the second Test against South Africa

SURANGA LAKMAL and part-time spinner Dhananjaya de Silva shared seven wickets to cause a major Standard Bank Proteas second innings collapse and give Sri Lanka a wonderful chance on Friday of winning the Castle Lager Test Series at St. George’s Park.

Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier had earlier also shared seven wickets to give the Proteas a lead of 68 runs on the first innings but, as they have done throughout the series, Sri Lanka continued to match the home side punch for punch to dismiss the Proteas for 128 runs and set a victory target of 197.

Considering this requires the second highest total of the match the outcome could still go either way with Sri Lanka having reached by the close of play on 60/2, needing a further 137 runs for victory.

In what has become an all too familiar Proteas story this summer they lost their last six wickets for just 38 runs. Lakmal led the way with his figures of 4/39 but in a way De Silva made the more important contribution having to take the role of frontline spinner following the unfortunate injury that has ruled Lasith Embuldeniya out of the majority of the match.

De Silva started the collapse when he had Hashim Amla caught at slip and might have had Faf du Plessis even earlier to an edge that found the gap between wicketkeeper and slip. It was just as well for the Proteas that their captain survived as he went on to finish unbeaten on 50 (70 balls, 7 fours) as the last six South African batsmen made 18 runs between them.

It meant that no South African batsmen has managed an aggregate of 100 runs in the match and Sri Lanka will probably need one of their top order to get to a match aggregate of 100 if they are to finish the job.

In all 18 wickets fell in the day’s play while 282 runs were scored.

The way Keshav Maharaj turned the ball in the final over of the day suggests that Sri Lanka face a very tough target.

Game on a knife edge, SL need atleast 1 big partnership here. I really hope they pull of a series win tomorrow.

SL has the right attitude. They don't try to block the balls. WHenever there is a loose ball they punish it. Many teams think hanging around will help them. That is the worst thing you do in SA. You just keep attacking. I remember when India had a fantastic chance to win a series in SA on day 4. They tinkered the batting stupidly. For some bizzarre reason Tendulkar was absolutely stuck not scoring anything against debutant Paul Harris the left arm spinner. Dravid was also stuck. India dramatically collapsed for no apparent reason. SA smartly promoted pollock up the order to get to the target as quickly as possible. His innings was handy. India missed a golden opportunity and ended up losing the highly winnable test. One session screw up was all needed.

Completely agree with this. In SA, you can get a ball any time which will have your money on it, therefore you need to score your runs, play your shots and get maximum runs before you can that one unplayable ball.

I am expecting a breath taking innings from Mendis tommorow. Sl have proven that where there is a will there is a way.

Some SA posters used to go out of their way to discredit AB. Looks like he's gonna be missed more than they imagined. :)

Pretty clear the SA were very relaxed and over confident expecting the Sri Lankans to blindly roll over taking into account their recent form.

SA batting coach says we were complacent & unprepared because not much was known about most members of this touring side . Very lame in my opinion .

Superb from Sri Lanka.

Positive intent this morning.

Heading easily towards the target.

Pakistan should learn from Sri Lanka. The team of south africa isn't what it used to be, but still Pakistan suffered like minions (no offence, i am myself pakistani but i hate what happened in that tour as if we were like banglandesh, getting out to short balls & no temperament in batting or application from batsmen as they threw it away).

Really surprised with performance of Sri Lanka. They will be able to carry this confidence in the world cup, while we won't be able to surpass first stage from the looks of it. I hope we can improve

Pakistan players poop in their pants when they think about touring SA and Aus.

South Africa dearly missing Pakistani collapses & 'determination' of our batsmen who give away their wickets at crucial moment when team is in need. Why is there no Azhar in SL who would choke and prolong it to make it more miserable for the team, like he did against NZ in UAE when we lost that test from comfortable position?

During Pak-SA series I said Oliviers returns are the best he'll ever have in his career,or at least until he plays Pak next

Azhar was trying to take 10 singles in 10 overs Lol:maqsood

Dont worry. Any bowler who can pitch the ball short from a good height will be lethal for us on any track. We just love to fail repeatedly in a similar fashion, making sure to learn not a single iota.

Nothing to take away from Sirilanka, they performed really well. It's just sad when I see my team is in ruins and others perform well :(

Why can't Sri Lankans enjoy good weather and foreign tours like us? May be the players should make good hair styles whenever they go for such tours? They could simply use 'Win or Lose is part of game?' as an excuse after a white wash? Why are they playing so good for their country? What's in it for them? Should learn from Pakistan, as I thought they were our friends.

Or, may be the pitches are better for sub-continent. I remember Du Plessi blaming them, so may be they improved for more batting friendly. But that doesn't explain how Sri Lanka got them out cheaply so many times. Beats me what is happening

It is indeed very sad, especially when you know players are very comfortable with drubbings on these tours and they have no will to improve.

I would love to hear Mickeys comments after this SL series as he had this excuse that no team from subcontinent has ever won in SA

Fantastic series win . Time to junk Otis as coach & Faf as skipper & retire Amla , Elgar & Steyn .

Over: 34.6, 0 run, "Rabada to BOP Fernando, no run, ducks under this fiery short ball outside off"

Lol, this is not how you play. This ball is supposed to be scored for catch in the hands of a fielder near boundary or a square leg. Sri Lanka need to do a lot more to be 'better' than Pakistan.

Just look how much they are careful when need be and score runs at the same time? That's how good teams play.

Wow wow wow
Unbelievable. There were people here who saw cracks in the Saffer team and that innings last game ( let's be honest SL were miles off until then) as given SL major confidence.
This is crazy!

This is the best test series win this decade.
Beating the might Africans at home no less, a team as strong as australia during their world cup unbeaten run, is no small feat.:salute

Great job from Sri Lanka, what really pisses me off here though is we have a game where barring this last innings no team has looked in. We are about to end the game inside 2 1/2 days with teams barely reaching 200. If this was Asian pitch SENA pussies would be shouting pitch doctoring every 10 seconds, no sanctions or complaints when it is a green pitch though.

this is just fluke by mamoon school of thinking he applies to pakistan....one in a hundred anomaly lolol

Big congrats to Lanka brrothers

Here it is , awesome victory truly deserve every bit of it, first asian side to win a test series in South Afrikka

SL win by 8 wickets, huge margin of victory totally crushed SA. Congrats to Lankan brothers and Asian brothers.
