Sri Lanka [232/9] beat England [212] by 20 runs in the 27th match of the 2019 World Cup

Even Bangladesh will lose to Afghanistan, I am scared, out next match is against them. Pray for us brother :moyo

No all Bang need to do is score 260-270 batting first.
And if they bat second play a couple of spinners cautiously and score against other bowlers, which BDs sensible batsmen will do. Dont worry its BD's game

England will cruise to semi finals . Few posters are making too much of this blip

England need to win 2 now to confirm their place and the next oppositions are Australia/India/New Zealand basically the three strongest oppositions they can play in this World Cup

They'll win 2 if not all three. Jason roy needs to make a comeback

Brilliant from Sri Lanka.

Total surprise. Perhaps some complacency from England, but the Lankans were superb with the ball and in the field.

Ya Allah save us from Afghan bros Jazba Junoon

Man both Eng and Aus played their absolute full strength team against us. Roy and Plunkett caused big damage and so did Stoinis against us.

They would have played their second eleven and still won.

The most important result of this defeat could be that the Eng players could be having self doubts about the gung ho approach and that is a very bad thing for them.

Match of the tournament for me, congrats SL fans, enjoy this sweet moment.

Big result. Having lost two matches and with Australia and India still to play England seem to be wobbling. There is a lot to happen before the semi finalists are decided. Sri Lanka bowled brilliantly to keep a powerful England batting line up in complete control.

Well done Sri Lanka, you deserve it. On a day any team can beat each other.

Condolences to England..

They need to win 2 out of 3 now.

Yeah that guy has been blabbering about the ifs and buts when in reality they escaped a pummelling.

What I said is 100% correct. I did not say Eng and Aus would have lost to BD otherwise. I claimed they played their absolute full strength team. Prove me wrong otherwise. Don't say random useless things.

He was like had Aus only scored 350 against them they would have won... delusions of grandeur.

Match of the tournament and guess what, this is the only game i missed. Uffff

Nope, I never claimed that. It was not me bro.

Ok sorry must have been someone else then..... can't be brother Ashraful_Rox he is too chill for these sort of shenanigans :yk

Congratz All SL fans! SL really have been brilliant, match of the tournament for me so far.

You're the one having a bout of random verbal diarrhoea. I understand that you guys are playing brilliantly but don't try to portray yourself as unlucky.

Now India needs to do Pak a favour and smash England by 100 runs. Then Aus never lose to England so that's a sure shot defeat for England. We MIGHT be in with a chance if we win 4/4 of course.

Match of the tournament for me, seriously the England commies weren’t giving a chance at all to Srilanka, the woman commentator was cringeworthy.

Ronaldo7

Told you Pakistan would have lost to Sri Lanka on that green Bristol pitch.

That was a great result for (and performance by) Sri Lanka, particularly their bowlers, and it is also a very good result for the tournament.

Of course it goes down as a poor performance and an even poorer result from an England point of view.

England still in a decent position though, 8 points and one of the better NRRs. The semi-finals are within reach as long as they don’t panic.

Thanks bro :holding I am trying to find that fan who insulted Sarfraz to troll him. I have time on Friday & Saturday :odoyo

Don't dare to criticize root his fans won't like it .

He is good supporting role to bairstow ,roy, morgan when they don't click root hardly win matches for eng

I am as big a Root fan as anyone on Earth lol

Root is certainly a versatile batsman but he made a big mistake here, which can happen to even the best of them.

Eng needs to win 2 out of Aus, Ind, NZ. Whom do you think will those 2 be?

Not Root’s fault. He is having a fabulous tournament and just got strangled down the leg-side here. Root and Stokes aside, it was a very poor team batting performance.

With England’s good NRR and having played the same number of matches as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, England may well only need to win one more match to get into the semis. Two of course would seal it.

Honestly England are capable of beating any or all of those three teams, and have done so numerous times before.

No panic button needed.

Moeen Ali cost England the match, that was a Bangladeshi style shot

Lasith Malinga didn’t even take his jumper off for this latest masterclass.

In the white-hot heat of a must-win ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup game – against the tournament hosts and world’s No.1 side no less – the great man remained predictably ice cold.

And while the midriff may be a little more rotund, the ambling run-up slower than ever, and the beard flecked with grey – there remains no sight in world cricket quite like Malinga in full flight.

The slower balls, the yorkers and the short stuff – the terrifying trifecta – all released from that slinging action we know and love.

It might have been the newer faces in this Sri Lanka side like Dhananjaya de Silva and Isuru Udana who cleaned up England’s tail.
But make no mistake about it, it was Malinga’s magnificence that won this game.

The 35-year-old has been bamboozling batsmen for 15 years now on the international scene and yet still somehow retains the element of surprise.

In the Leeds afternoon sun, for what might be the last time at an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, it was a privilege to watch the great man cast his spell.

You should never write him off. After all, this is a man who didn’t play an ODI for his country for the best part of two years as his body appeared to be failing him.

His race appeared to be run, in the 50-over format at the very least.

But he has came storming back to full fitness in the last couple of years. Just ask England who felt his full force in Dambulla last year or re-watch this year’s final over in the IPL for proof.

And there had been hints during this tournament as well. Afghanistan got a taste in Cardiff and Steve Smith was befuddled by a vintage slower ball at the Oval.

But it was probably fitting that it was at Headingley – a ground the Sri Lankans know and love after famous wins here in recent years – that Malinga produced his fullest flex.
And, unlike his Dambulla destruction, it wasn’t the lower order he embarrassed this time.

Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Jos Buttler – these have been three of the key cogs in an all-conquering England line-up that has risen to No.1 in the world.

Contrast that to Sri Lanka who have struggled to settle on a winning formula since the last World Cup. Malinga has lost the captaincy in that time, and twice already this tournament gone home to bid farewell and then bury his deceased mother-in-law.

But when the mood takes him few can rival him.

England had restricted Sri Lanka to 232/9 – Mark Wood producing an emphatic full stop in cleaning up Malinga at the death with a textbook yorker.

But that was England’s first mistake – they made Malinga angry.

Wicket number 48 at World Cups came in the very first over of England’s reply – Bairstow trapped in front playing across a straight one.

James Vince followed soon after for number 49, nicking off as Malinga manoeuvred his field with finesse.

But after five overs in the powerplay, Malinga put his hat back on, disappeared into the outfield and England’s chase gathered strength.

It looked like maybe Dimuth Karunaratne had left it too late but in the 31st over, Malinga came roaring back.

Root was well set, the best England batsman at this tournament, with 57 runs to his name.

But Malinga wanted a half century of his own – and his 50th World Cup wicket duly arrived with Root strangled down the leg side.

That scalp took him past his countryman Chaminda Vaas, and only Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan and Wasim Akram have more on the world's biggest stage.

Akram’s tally of 55 is hoving into view and Malinga made it 51 soon after, England’s dangerman Buttler powerless in the face of the Rathgama Express.

Buttler had already chipped a slower ball just wide of a newly-installed silly mid-on when a full fast and swinging yorker trapped him in front.

England’s best batsmen were now back in the hutch and Sri Lanka were back from the dead.

Only Kusal Mendis’ drop in the deep denied Malinga his crowning glory of a five-for at the death.

But perhaps it was fitting that Nuwan Pradeep – equally brilliant with the new ball when England’s chase faltered – came back to finish the job.

Sri Lanka are back in this tournament, and Malinga – a runner-up in 2007 and again in 2011 – will be eyeing a few more victims before all is said and done.

No it wasn’t Isa Guha it was a white woman :boycott she was speaking rubbish and holding just ignored some of it :holding

I like Isa Guha :butt

Alison Mitchell. She was replaced by Sanga and Nas just in the nick of time, having her drone on during the most exciting part of the match would've been insufferable.

Eoin Morgan admits England forgot about the basics of a run chase in defeat to Sri Lanka – but has backed his men to come out swinging on Tuesday against Australia.

England suffered a shock 20-run reversal at Headingley on Friday, failing to chase down what looked like a sub-par total of 232/9.

Victory keeps Sri Lanka in the hunt for the semi-finals and means England will not be able to secure a top-four spot with games to spare as they had initially hoped.

Ben Stokes made an unbeaten 82 and Joe Root 57 for the hosts, but the former ran out of partners as Lasith Malinga led a remarkable fightback.

And with defending champions Australia looming large at Lord's next week, Morgan has demanded a response from his troops.

“You look at the basics of a run chase, partnerships are very important,” said Morgan.

“We struggled to get enough of them, or one substantial one, going. We had a couple of individual innings but that is not going to be enough to win the game.

“When we get beaten we tend to come back quite strong, we tend to resort to aggressive, smart and positive cricket so let’s hope that’s the case on Tuesday.

“The message is quite simple, we need to do the basics along with the way that we play as well.

“There is no reason why it shouldn’t be, we are going to play competitive games and are not going to win every game in this World Cup.

“We need to go back to the process that has taken us to being a strong side in the world.”

England remain without the injured Jason Roy at the top of the order and their slow start in the chase probably hampered their chances of winning.

Sri Lanka meanwhile had only won one game so far this tournament coming into the clash, but Morgan insists they didn’t underestimate their opponents in Leeds.

“Mally (Malinga), he has been around for a long time, so bowling like that is not a surprise at all,” he said. “We are going to lose games in the group stages.

“We didn’t deserve to win this game. There were a couple of challenges that presented themselves with the wicket and we didn’t overcome them.

“Quite a few wickets were turning points, simply in the fact that you have got guys coming in at six, who average 40, seven who average 30, we bat all the way down.

“So every single wicket is quite important because every single one could have salvaged a partnership that could win you the game.

“If you look at the games we have played. We would love (Roy) in the side and he is a huge strength at the top of the order but that is not why we lost the game or why we might have struggled on this wicket.”

England lacked their usual intensity with the bat as they failed to chase what appeared a relatively modest target of 233 to beat Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup tie at Headingley.

That was the verdict of Jos Buttler, whose fast-scoring based around an innovative 360-degree game has been a key factor behind the emergence of the side as a white-ball force over the past four years.

Defeat by 20 runs represents a second loss of the tournament for the hosts, who struggled against the full, straight line of Lasith Malinga and then the off-spin of Dhananjaya de Silva as they sought to rebuild.

Captain Eoin Morgan rued the inability of batsmen to adapt to conditions, with the pitch a touch slower than expected, and deputy Buttler was equally honest in his assessment of a lethargic chase.

“We played poorly with the bat,” Buttler admitted. “I think we lacked energy. That doesn’t mean trying to hit fours and sixes, it means showing intensity and trying to put pressure on the bowlers.

“Early wickets can set teams back, as it did for Sri Lanka when we took early wickets, but in terms of the mindset we were not at our best.

“I thought we were a bit passive. We haven’t been like that for a long time so that is the most frustrating part of the game. We bowled well and restricted them to a very chaseable score.”

Although England were missing Jason Roy because of a hamstring tear, Buttler refused to make an excuse out of the absence of the fast-scoring opener.

“We didn’t as a group have the right attitude and intensity,” he said. “Obviously, Jason is a guy who has that naturally, but from one to eleven we can do it as a side.

“We have played a certain way for a long period of time now. That way has brought us success but we went away from it this time.”

Malinga is a veteran of Sri Lanka’s victories against England in the 2011 quarter-final in Colombo and the win four years later at Wellington. On that second occasion, Sri Lanka chased with a positive sense of purpose that England lacked at Headingley.

“He is an incredibly skilful bowler,” Buttler said. “The stumps are always in play with his release point and it is generally going to be pretty close if he hits your pads. We didn’t counter him as well as we could.”

For all his disappointment, Buttler remains adamant that England will be a different side come their next game, against Australia at Lord’s on Tuesday. “That will bring lots of intensity,” he said.

“Those games are big ones, and at a fantastic ground at Lord’s. This loss will hurt for a few days but we will get ready and excited for the next game.”

De silva is a common name in Brazil and Lanka dunno how that works..

De Silva, Fernando, Perera and Mendis are all Portuguese names. Portuguese colonized Sri Lanka and some part of India but fully colonized in SL. Some part of India were also colonized for some time by Portugese. Thoothukudi area has lots of Fernandos and De Silva's. Not much Perera or Mendes.

Has England ever beat SL in world cups ? I think England lost two WC matches vs SL by like 10 wickets both ? Also SL scored 370 vs England few months ago no ? SL can still win. They have talent. Just poor execution.

lmao England have to beat 2 out of 3 teams - they have us, Aus and India left.

By observing Englands performance today it seems they may crack under pressure when facing tougher opponents.

Im guessing its gonna be: Ind vs Aus / Ind vs NZ in finals..

Malinga should have retired awhile ago. Has been useless since 2012 when ICC introduced the garbage 2 new balls rule and is mentally weak and cant take a beating by the batsmen

mentally weak?!? who? Malinga? really?!?
